Weeks went by and I would drop in to check occasionally, "Did you do that thing?" and they gave me excuses, so I gave up and just did it myself in an afternoon. It occurred to me that I hadn't shopped at this place for a long time, and now I could articulate why. This isn't my grandfather's hardware store, where the clerk knew things about the houses in the area or the soil; local expertise. The stock is the same cheap Chinese junk that you can get anywhere, nothing is really built to last. Despite the calls to support local businesses, I don't see them out doing things in the community that might merit my loyalty. There's no lollipops for the kids or a big fat cat like when I was a young man. It's staffed by surly, bearded boys who politely tell you they are sorry but we don't stock what you are looking for. So if you haven't been for a while, trust your instincts. It's not that good an experience.

The staff is always eager to help and I have never had a negative experience. I get items here for half or less of what they'd cost at other home stores on the street. I…read moremoved into a house about a mile away from Washington Square, over the hill, and realized pretty quickly that a) I need to own an extension ladder, b) my car would in no way be able to help me move it, c) I probably needed a couple big central air filters at the same time, and d) my wife knows that if she implies I can't do something I will definitely do it. It's a real nice day, and she gently suggests I ask about delivery, so I strike out on foot. Fifteen minutes later the fella at Connelly's is showing me right to everything, takes me downstairs to look over the gutter downspouts because that's coming due soon too, makes incredulous small talk about my plan to walk a mile home with twelve foot of extension ladder and ten square foot of air filter, and then gets super pumped when he realizes that he and some masking tape can make my life easier by turning the big air filters into a big fashionable tote for my other shoulder. He helps me out the door, and long story short I got everything home, didn't wipe out any bikes, avoided that one Bugatti, and only embarrassed myself when there was no-one around. Connelly is now my hardware store for life, and god-willing I'm never going to buy another extension ladder from them again.

The main reason why I use Tags is their location in Porter Square. I find that the staff are…read morefriendly and try to be helpful. However, the pricing is extremely high compared to some other big box stores or ACE hardware locations outside of the city. I highly recommend using their order online for in store pickup for the best pricing since the store will follow the online pricing vs the shelf sticker price. Online orders come with a paper bag that has a handle which makes it nice and easy to carry out. There are two floors to the store, with the majority of home improvement things being on the lower level.

It took two weeks, and the screen fell off the moment I reinstalled it. I also had a key copied. It didn't work. I ended up taking both the door and key to Inman Hardware. They fixed the screen and made a key that actually worked. Buy stuff at Tags if you want, but don't count on them for even basic jobs.
