So I was referred to this shop by a reputable shop that was retiring from the trade. I brought the an older Ariens due to drive not engaging and sputtering when running. Charged me $40 right off the bat. Calls me and tells me what is wrong and I ask him to try and repair it. Says he will check on parts. Calls me back and says he can't get parts and the machine can't be repaired due to this. I told him I would just come and get it. I pick it up and spend 10 mins with it. The drive wasn't seized!!!!!! It was just stuck and needed to be greased. Ran old gas out of machine and put VP 4 cycle in and runs like a top with drive now working. Feels like they saw an older machine and didn't want to deal with it when they can just take the money from the deep pocketed town folks. Won't be going back. They should be ashamed of this. I purchased a few items in here without incident like keychains and sand for the driveway. The place is small and overpriced to compared to Home Depot, but if you're desperate and don't want to go far from home, it might be your best bet, especially for winter essentials. What really IRKS me here is that they will not let me purchase the Town of Milton trash stickers using a credit card, even if I want to buy a good number of them and spend $30-45. Commuting into the city on the T, I just don't carry that much cash around with me. One time an employee made me purchase something in order to buy the stickers with a card and another time an older man insisted I pay a $1 surcharge to buy them with a credit card. Ugh! After posting my review of Milton Village Hardware Colby immediately contacted me to address my concerns. I am very happy with his level of professionalism and understanding of the issues I raised below. As a result I have increased MHV's review score to 3 stars. Milton Hardware Village lacks any hint of customer service protocol or fair pricing...dropped off my snowblower for a routine tune up. Was quoted at $160 for that service. They also quoted me $32 for delivery back to my house. i got a call when It was ready 3 weeks later. The rep proceeds to tell me it was $360. She explains it was $145 worth of parts and one way delivery is $55 even though round trip is $60. She denied quoting me $32...even more strangely what company doesn't give a courtesy call to tell the customer the parts are almost as expensive as the service price and therefore providing the consumer with the right to decide what to do with the snowblower...now lets just hope their work is worth the price. read more

Milton Village Hardware I dropped off one of our snowblowers a couple of days after the January 2019 ice storm and spoke to the manager. He gave me a professional and honest approach and I could see he had other snow blowers to repair in front of mine. He gave me a rough idea of the time and a rough idea of the cost. He made the repair within the time frame and close to the cost....I fully understood it was a ballpark cost until he took it apart. He recommend to change out the belts since the machine was already apart. I agreed since the belts were worn. I would highly recommend Milton Hardware.. The snow blower worked great the next 2 storms and continues to perform with no issues. I would go back anytime. The most important thing I liked was their honesty. read more

I own a landscaping company in the area and Milton village hardware is my go to supplier for landscaping machinery and our go to small engine mechanic for when our guys break that machinery. Colby is very knowledgeable and as well as fixing our machines at a fair rate, usually within a day or two, he teaches us proper and smart technics on how to use them to extend their life. I buy all of our snow blowers, chain saws, mowers, weed whackers from them because they carry the best brands out there and sell them at an extremely reasonable price. They also often have used machinery they sell to us for extremely cheap and last as long as the new guys. I cannot say enough about how much I love this hardware store. I will never go back to the big box stores. Colby and Cricket Thomason are a great team that have brought the hardware store business to a whole new level. They have the best prices for equipment (and quality too for that matter...the big box store quality is different for the same brands (Ariens and Toro)). And their service is second to none. HIDDEN GEM AND WORTH THE TRIP - Can't understand how anyone would have an issue with the service/friendliness of these guys. They are the antithesis of the big box stores- everything you need and they'll advise on projects and such with a smile. Always very friendly (family owned business for generations and members of the community). Last winter when snowblower parts were worth their weight in gold they were the ONLY ones to have everything in stock (and I tried Home Labrynth, Lowes, and Norfolk). We went there to have a lamp fixed, it needed a new toggle to turn it on/off. They fixed it all right but charged us $80!!! They never told us what it would cost and we foolishly didn't ask, but we thought $20 would be generous. To add insult to injury the toggle they put on it was a completely different finish than the lamp. Not impressed. read more

Long story short, borrowed my neighbors mower, and guess what it broke starter cable came off, the S hook on the end has broke almost in half. Noticed the plastic set up also hanging along the cable.the nut holding that together came off. No Problem, told my Neighbor I will arrange to have it fixed, new cable and nut. It will be good as new. I borrowed it I will have repaired. called MVH. was thinking the pick up/delivery was steep but hey I don't have a truck, so it is what it is (65.00)the Most miserable guy came and picked it up, showed him what was broken and he just looked at me as if he didn't understand English. ok no big deal. after a few days they called and told me 110.00 mower is all set. Mr. miserable came back to deliver it.(Yay) I look at the mower, the didn't even clean it off (it did have grass on it when it went there) ok? so they are lacking on that end of customer service. My Name and address written on the mower with shapie marker(MY Neighbor loved that) then I noticed it had the same start cable. Mr. Miserable tries to tell me its brand new! I asked him if I looked stupid, and showed him it was the same cable with the same broken end that I sent in to get fixed. he was positive it was not. I asked did you work on this, he said no. I asked are you the owner he said no. ok this conversation is useless. Called and spoke to Colby, easy to talk to as we worked on the issue. he explained that they did not replace the cable as it was fine, and the the S hook that came out of the handle did so because the lower piece that came off caused slack and allowed it to slip out. So I asked, no new cable, you put a nut on and charged me 45.00???? he stated we have to charge for labor. I asked why in the hell did you write my name on the mower knowing dam well it was not mine and I was repairing it because I borrowed it. he said I could clean it off with a little effort and household cleaner and he said many red mowers in the shop, hard to keep track of them. So I asked whats the tag hanging from it? that has my name on it right??? His reply was epic.......Tags come off. he was also kind enough to inform me that he didn't charge me for the parts where the cable was hanging-WOW JUST REALLY WOW-I sent the parts with your man I told him, it only needed a nut at the end of the bolt so I am glad you didn't charge me for my own parts!!!!!!! Ok, you win COLBY I HOPE YOU ARE READING THIS LIKE THE OTHER POSTS!- you screwed me but you never get another dime off me or my neighbors again. I paid 110.00 for a push mower to be picked up and a nut put on and then returned with shop graffiti. cable not replaced,and still slipping out, nor was the mower cleaned off and they even got my address wrong when they wrote on it in sharpie. They gave us a full demo of the snowblower and even took the time to explain everything, answer all our questions and even let us try it out for ourselves in the parking lot! They service them right on site, pick them up for you and return them. And they even deliver when you buy a new one - all assembled and ready to go! You cant beat the price and especially cant beat the friendly and knowledgeable people that you meet at Milton Village! Everyone should buy their equipment from this local hardware! Totally love the idea of supporting a local business, rather than going to Home Depot or Lowe's but this place ake you want to run for the mega store! They always act as though you are a bother to them when you come in to buy something nad are not particularly friendy or helpful. On one ocassion the man behind the counter carried on a conversation with another person in the store the entire time e was "waiting" on me and never addressed me once during the transaction. I had my snowblower rapaired there because the gas had gunked in the carbourator. I took it in and explained the problem and asked for a "tune up." 2 weeks later when I go to pick it up they have a bill for $240 to get it running!! That was more than the cost of the snowblower, and they didn't bother to call to see if I wanted to go through with the repair. Interestingly, "parts" were only $61, whcih included a new belt (which it didn't need), spark plug and oil. For the $175 bucks of labor I asked the guy who fixed it what his rate was, and he responded "we don't have a rate, thats just what it costs." What a crappy bussiness. Exorbant rates for which they can't justify, and not even the decency to call when a repair cost more than the value of the device. read more

Tried to get "Factory Authorized" service on my almost new Ariens snow blower. Guy that took my call (Richard maybe??) as soon as he found out I had purchased it at Home Depot became stand off-ish and seemed determine to take me to the cleaners. I asked if he would get back to me with a firm price and he never called me back. As an experienced mechanic with a snow storm coming, I fixed it myself with parts off ebay. When I filed a complaint with Ariens, they basically said they have no control of "Authorized Dealers" and that since I fixed it myself I had voided the warranty. I needed a new auger, I already had the oem model number, but he said it could not be done unless he got the whole model number for the snow thrower. I said "what", all I needed was just a part. He was a great help and had me go see all the different model snow blowers in the shop downstairs. I decided to forgo the big hardware store chains while in Milton Village because the assumption is that people at smaller stores are warmer...ya know, more friendly. I did not feel very welcome and was treated rather rudely by an older man who works there. When I gave him measurements for some plexiglass that I needed cut, he acted like I had 3 heads because I told him that it was 11.7 inches. "I don't know what .7 is" I explained that it is more than 11 1/2 but less than 11 3/4. Surely he knew this! As I tried to explain what I needed it for, he continued to walk away from me until I finally said "if you stop and look at me and listen, I will explain." I thought that customer service automatically involved eye contact and listening. I am a speech and language pathologist and teach kids these basic social skills every day so surely a grown man should have them. I will definitely go elsewhere in the future. Perhaps I will be treated better a few blocks away at Norfolk Hardware where I will be among "my people." read more
