I was incorrectly charged $153 for the month of May despite the fact that I moved out by April 30, consistent with all instructions from Public Storage. I tried raising the issue to staff at the facility itself, Public Storage customer service, and directly with District Manager Adam Martin, who ignored multiple voicemails from me. I was ignored for two months then PS sent the amount I shouldn't have been billed to a collections agency. I followed all emailed instructions, vacated the unit, and removed the lock before 4/30. I called the facility to confirm the move out inspection would be completed, and was told the staff member doing the inspections was overwhelmed and behind schedule. A few days later I was called back and another staff member told me I had left property in the unit, which is why the vacate hadn't been processed. I said I absolutely had not left anything and asked what property I had allegedly left behind. He didn't know/couldn't tell me, and said he'd call me back too confirm what was left, but never did. I went back to the Public Storage that day to find the unit empty, as I had left it. I have video of the empty unit. I later got the confirmation that I had vacated the unit. It seems to me that facility staff lied to get another month's rent out of me or to cover for the fact that other staff was not processing move outs on time. Do not do business with Public Storage.

I have been a customer of this facility since before Public Storage obtained it. When ezStorage…read moreowned it, it was clean, no bugs, no rodents, no weird smell. There was always someone in the office for assistance. There was always at least a dozen clean carts to carry your items. Since Public Storage now owns it, the facility is dirty, smells bad, you're lucky if there's a dirty cart around, and there's rodent droppings and urine in my unit and on my belongings. There's rarely, if ever, someone in the office. The rent has gone up from about $60 to $264 with no reasonable explanation. I complained about the rodent mess in my unit and they said I could request an insurance payment for damage. I don't want my items damaged at all, I want the problem controlled. I asked what was being done to remove the rodents, like traps, and the person on the phone said a mediocre yes but I haven't seen any in the facility. The time that I did see someone in the office, he was late and apathetic about my concerns. I asked about the rent going up and they said it's been a while since it's gone up, like that's an explanation. If you are late with rent, they harass you nearly daily, deny you entrance after a short number of days and threaten to auction your belongings after 30 days. As a federal contractor that was laid off, this adds to the stress.

In the course of 2 years, company decided to raise my agreed rental rate 3 times for up to 50% more than initially agreed. After confronting the manager, I was told this is out of their hands since corporate decides when and how much the rental increases occur. Instead of moving my business elsewhere, manager offered a smaller unit at a much lesser rate, taking into account that "rate will not increase for at least a year and even if it does, increase will be marginal". Trusting this company I decided to go ahead with the downgrade. To my surprise, less than 4 months later I receive ANOTHER RATE INCREASE NOTICE!! This time the increase would be for more than 50% starting next month. This increase like all the others happen for NO JUSTIFIABLE reason. As expressed by many others, this company has a long history of PREDATORY BILLING PRACTICES. They purposely wait for you to be settled with your storage to increase your rates, not by a marginal amount but increases of over 50% of your agreed rental agreement. I appealed this with their superiors in writing but they failed to even respond. I am now in the process of starting to take legal action against this company and needless to say I recommend everyone to stay away from this corporation completely!

They make the front lobby look nice but the rest of the area is nasty and outdated. It's not a safe area. Pick a newer storage place. There are so many nearby.

I worked with a different moving company 2 years ago that left me scarred for life with how rude and unprofessional they were. I ended up having to finish the job myself (moving my giant couch up four flights of stairs), so when I knew I was moving again, I did my due diligence and sought out a few quotes. Another company quoted me almost $800 and required a 3 hour minimum for the job!! $800 seemed steep and I knew the job wouldn't take that long... Along came Bookstore Movers who quoted me a reasonable $470 minimum for two hours of work and a maximum of $680 for 3.5 hours of work (price breakdown: $140 per hour with 2 hour min. plus a $190 truck fee). I received a quote within a few hours of requesting it. There was no deposit required and the date was booked. I received detailed emails leading up to the move about FAQs, tips for a seamless move, and the names of my crew including contact info for the crew lead. Abdul (crew lead), Niiwayo "Y.O", and Milly were SO fast and friendly. They wrapped every single item with care in drop cloths and got to moving immediately. Despite the 90 degree heat and a total of five flights of stairs, the job was finished in 2 hours. I was SO impressed. I was so traumatized by my last move that I literally had to walk away while they moved the couch in but before I knew it, I got a text from my boyfriend telling me they had fit it through the door and our living room was all set up. I was so relieved and happy to work with them. If and when we move again, (hopefully not anytime soon, lol), I will 100% be contacting Bookstore Movers... and you should too!

I don't know how long that roach had been there but I was appalled. Before I continue with this recent horror, let me update you on the matter from earlier this month. I spoke to the temporary manager and then the permanent manager Carlton. All I was offered for my initial review was $25 off my bill. Carlton was courteous, responsive and it appeared that he was doing what was within his power. He also assured me that the pest control vendor would be coming to retreat the facility. Now that that is out the away-- this recent issue. For readers' awareness, ExtraSpace Storage staff are not allowed to enter into the storage facilities. Nonetheless, I found a roach in my storage unit and I was enraged! I've spent over $500 to get the space organized and get everything off of the floor. I highly recommend that anyone who uses this facility without any alternative options thoroughly clean their area and purchase storage options to keep their belongings off of the floor. I'm really upset and worried about what I may bring into my home thanks to my time using this storage facility. I don't want to bring roaches or other vermin into my home due to my need for temporary storage. I would not recommend using this particular facility. Move out if you can.

A couple of folks have remarked about the customer service; I don't know if they've had a change of staff but everyone I interacted with was extremely helpful and polite. When I purchased boxes, Rose helped me load them into the car. The security is thorough: you need to punch in a code specific to you to enter the gate, and then again to enter the building. My *only* complaint is that you don't have 24/7 access to the building - it's open every single day, but the gates shut for good at 9 pm. For those of us that are night owl packers, that's kind of a bummer.

EVERY single person I dealt with at Grasshopper has been customer focused and professional. They are clearly a company that is focused on meeting customer needs versus up-selling or lengthening the process. I would have even considered myself a not ideal client in that I contacted Grasshopper last minute and used them for storage far longer than anticipated AND asked for delivery and received it within 2 days of the request (meaning they didn't get to milk more money out of us just because they could.). DC is filled with lots of competition and these folks are just old fashioned in their approach - they have pride in their work. Finally, they also had the best price based on my extensive research (which I do professionally). If only they provided services outside of moving and storage - housekeeping? mobile phone service? Wifi & cable TV? OK, now I jest, but you get my point. Call them and sleep well. (FYI: I rarely write these because I seem to not have time, but I was motivated because of how awesome they all were to me - it's the least I could do.)
