This place is expensive - the glasses I looked at plus lenses came to $840. Plus they don't take insurance so you have to mail in your receipt and get the measly $100 your insurance company will give you for going out of network. So, their customer service should be very good, right? WRONG! I went in a few days ago and was helped by a nice woman. I went in again with my wife at 6 pm and the first person who helped us said "we are closing" and basically have us every signal we should leave. Their website says they close at 7 but they had decided to close at 6 that day for, ironically enough, "Customer Appreciation Day"! The woman who has helped me before came by and tried to make amends but it was clear they were closing and we felt the pressure to leave. So we did and will never be back. Go to Labrabbit on Ashland. This is a great little shop. Both times I've been in there I was impressed with the atmosphere and service. Mary helped me find what I was looking for the other day. She gave great suggestions and was nice to talk to. There is a good selection of frames, from super high-end small labels to just regular high-end smallish labels. That definitely means the prices tend to be on the high side, but I'm ok with spending a little more to have frames that are as unique as I am. After reading the reviews and checking out the website, I must admit that I was expecting the worst, in terms of attitude and pretension. But, I need glasses and I was in the neighborhood, and I guess I was feeling sassy that day because I ventured in anyway. And it was great! Yep, they're on the pricier end, it's true. But not totally outrageous as these things go - if you're in the market for "better than 1-hour chain," you're in this ballpark by default I think. I was impressed that they have a 2-year warranty, described to me as "you can grind them into the sidewalk and we'll fix it." That's pretty valuable! I found a pair I liked a lot, and the clerk (Sean, I think) emailed me a digital photo so I could send it around for opinions! He was also good at suggesting frames and honestly vetoing the awful ones without being insulting or anything. I would have been completely happy to get my glasses at Eye Spy, but I fell for a different style somewhere else. I'm still afraid of the Damen store, though, where you don't even get to see the options unless they chose to show them to you. That seems weird... read more

I've worked with Eye Spy Optical since their opening in 1998, and it has been a great partnership. I'm not always the easiest customer to please as I'm super picky with prescriptions but they've always gone out of their way to work with me. I am only writing this so maybe the sales people will improve their game. I bought my glasses there several years ago- loved the glasses- raved about the service- gave the name out to countless people who asked where I had made my purchase. Now I am looking for another pair of frames and returned today only to be an annoyance to the salesperson in the store who had NO other customers. She was disinterested in helping me, aloof. Since I was wearing "their frames" it would have been nice if she offered to make sure they were adjusted correctly. Did she offer - no. There are at least 3 other Chicagoland stores that offer the French company that I like. I will be taking my business elsewhere where it will be more appreciated. With glasses costing as much as they do there, they should be more congenial. read more

I love my frames from Eye Spy. If you're seeking statement-making glasses instead of looking like everyone else, this is the place to go. Some of the designers available at Eye Spy cannot be found at any other locations in Chicago. Prior to my visit to Eye Spy, I thought I was 100% sure about what I wanted. Once I got there and saw that my frame designer of choice (Francis Klein) was not the only artistic frame choice, I really had to focus on making my decision because I loved almost everything I saw. Wonderful local shop. We have lived down the street for a few years but have never stopped in the store until I read a review on-line. My wife and I had been looking for new frames for the past year with no luck. After a recommendation from 'yelp' we stopped by after work one day and we both found exactly what we were looking for. Picking new frames isn't the easiest thing to do but with an experts help it was so much easier and more fun. Serina helped us out and after about and hour of her patiently showing us some great frames my wife and I finally found what we were looking for. The service I received at Eye Spy was excellent. I walked in a few weeks ago to browse for a pair of new sunglasses and found a style that fit perfectly. I was a bit unsure of the color so I decided to wait until the Anne et Valentin trunk show to see all they had to offer in that particular model. After a minor miscommunication on the date of the trunk show, the ladies over at Eye Spy were able to work something out with the A&V rep to leave behind a few different colors for me to try over the weekend. The extra effort they put into keeping me in the loop and working with my requests saved me from being impatient and buying a cheap pair of Warby's that I'd probably lose by the end of summer. I rarely get satisfaction from buying things but in this case I feel as if I made a perfect purchase. I've already received a few "Where did you get those?" questions and I'm happy to recommend Eye Spy to anyone curious. read more

Similar to other reviewers, I had trouble with this establishment as well. I've used them on 2 occasions, and when everything is going well, they are a bunch of cute and chirpy hipsters looking girls doing who seem great at customer service. For example, they keep cards on you with various details that makes them seem like they remember you personally no matter whether you've ever spoken with that salesperson or not, or if you haven't been there for a while. The first time I used them, everything went as promised, so they were great to work with. The second time was a vastly different experience. They have another side to them that reveals itself when things go wrong on their end and they act like the nightmare customer service people that you cringe at having to deal with and keep changing what they are saying until your head starts to hurt. The second time I went to them was after my new optometrist (I moved from that area) had problems fitting lenses into the glasses I had purchased from EyeSpy. The new place tried 2 different kinds of lenses that did not work then broke my original lenses. This is when I contacted EyeSpy. I spoke with Patsy who gushed sympathy for my frustration and assured me they could take care of my glasses and get them back to me with no problems. I asked how long it would take and she told me my lenses would take a week. Time was important to me, because my vision is terrible, and the first place had my glasses for over a month. At this point, my eyes were really hurting, because without my glasses I'd been wearing my contacts every day without a break. My first convo with EyeSpy was Oct 17. On Oct 22, Patsy told me my glasses were at the lab. As of Nov 5, new eta is Nov 11. That's over 3 weeks. This afternoon when I spoke with Alisa, she was extremely rude. When I told her that the whole reason I went to EyeSpy was that I had trouble with the last place and Patsy assured me EyeSpy could replace my lenses without any problems. They had said it would be a week and now it was more than 3 weeks. Alisa told me Nov 11 was the earliest they might be back and it could take longer. She also said SHE would never have told me it would only take a week. I asked why she was throwing Patsy under the bus rather than trying to fix the situation. Alisa said the only thing she could suggest was to use a cheaper lens which wouldn't take as long to replace. Somehow this didn't seem to make the situation better exactly. ( If I wanted a cheap product, I definitely would not have gone to EyeSpy--everything there is expensive.) I told her I didn't want a cheaper lens and asked to speak to Patsy. Alisa rudely explained that Patsy was helping a customer and she would have to call me later. I guess I was no longer a customer. Later when I finally talked to Patsy, gone was her cheery, helpful attitude. She said she did not tell me it would take a week and yelled at me that 'she would never have said that!' I have to say, that I was super surprised at this 180 with everyone's attitude, but it only got worse. I asked if they were going to offer anything as a gesture to remedy the situation. (At least the incompetent first place offered me a rebate on a portion of my initial payment.) Patsy said in a condescending voice, "she said sorry in the email and there was nothing else she was going to do!...she never told me a week!...this was the labs fault not theirs and it wasn't their responsibility to do anything to make up for it!..." I couldn't get in a word edge wise, and because she kept yelling at me, I ended up actually hanging up the phone on her. In all my experience with frustrating conversations with people who where in retail, I've never had to hang up the phone on anyone because they were being so rude! After paying more than $1,000 for these glasses, I would have expected better customer service. They were like Jeckel and Hyde. Great--when everything is going well. Monstrous, condescending bullies when they screw things up. read more

My friend recommended Eye Spy four years ago and although, I've only purchased 3 pairs of glasses from ESO, I've loved them all. I wear both my regular and prescription sunglasses often. I see better because of the Hoya ID lenses. The prices reflect the unique and high-quality craftsmanship of the frame and lenses as well as the attentive staff. The salesperson took the shape of my face, coloring and personal style into consideration when finding the best frames for me to try on. I couldn't have selected the frames without the sales staff's keen eyes. If you're "just looking to fill your prescription", scurry on past this place. If you're looking for a terrific and stylish accessory to your wardrobe, do stop in. I had been a customer of other fine eyewear establishments in the city and thought I couldn't do any better--until I went to Eye Spy. My first pairs of glasses there were ordered several years ago; my most recent (three pairs because it's nearly impossible to buy only one pair of those spectacular frames) just a couple of months ago. Their selection is unparalleled in the city. Yes, other places have nice frames, but Eye Spy really does carry frames that no one else does. They also regularly have new inventory in the store. Other reviewers have mentioned some of the great lines (Anne Et Valentin, Caroline Abram, and Theo are my personal favorites) carried in the store, but the staff is always bringing in new lines, too. You will find no place in Chicago with more current lines. And my orders have always been processed quickly, and I have my new glasses within a couple of weeks--at the most. Everyone who works here is professional, courteous, and fun to work with. They are all so good at their jobs (and that Patsy is an absolute sweetheart) that I allow them to pick out several frames they think will suit my face. Sometimes, I am stunned that a particular frame works, and when a frame doesn't, they are the first to say so. They aren't interested in "simply making a sale" at Eye Spy: they want customers to look good, have fun in their store, and be very satisfied with their purchases. I tell everyone I know (even those who don't need prescription glasses--everyone needs sunglasses, after all) to visit Eye Spy. The whole experience is enjoyable, from your first view of the decor to the final fitting of a fabulous new set of frames. Eye Spy has a broad selection of eclectic frames which tend to fall on the wacky range of eclectic. I'm someone who works in a conservative professional environment, so I need frames that are unique and distinctive, but so strong a statement that they are the dominant thing you see. I wish they would develop the more subtle range of uniqueness, and also include more frames which are suited for my high myopia. Yeah, that's asking a lot, but esp at that price point, it would be amazing if they could deliver! read more

Great service and choices in eyewear for adults and children. Helpful, friendly, knowledgeable and pleasant. My daughter got her first pair of glasses here, loved them and could not bear to have to size up when she recently outgrew them. But we came back for a new pair she appears to like almost as much. Pricepoint is high but service is excellent and selections of frames is great -- you don't see these styles all over the place. Experience started out well. Sales staff was helpful and took pride assisting with my needs. Do not however, have a change of heart or try to return a frame...even same day...even if purchasing more than one. No returns! Eventually I received (not in writing) a credit for the second frame I purchased earlier that day. No other frames fit, or if they did, cost was over $500. I decided to proceed with simple bifocal lenses with anti reflection coat in order to use up the credit for $265. A $28 credit remained which the owner (yelling from the back room) vehemently refused to refund. I looked at a few "small goods" in hopes of using up the remaining credit. They were not priced. Prices were relayed by someone yelling from the back room. I requested final receipts which were provided on recycled paper with someone else's personal information on the reverse side. I endured a slew of sarcastic remarks and personal attacks from the owner. I heard complaints about how they spent time with me and had done me a big favor in issuing a credit. Ironically, had Eye Spy been accommodating and had more reasonably fair practices, I would have purchased additional $$$$$ frames, Transitions lenses and eventually, sunglasses. read more

Eye Spy Optical rocks! I purchased my 2.5 Eyephorics glasses at Eye Spy a few years ago, and I'm very happy with them. But they really impressed me with assistance they provided to me last week. Long story short, after having my lenses exchanged at a different store a couple of weeks ago, my frames were returned with a bridge in a wrong color and a crooked temple. (For those who are not familiar with 2.5 Eyephorics glasses, they are fully customizable, so you get to choose pretty much every part of your frame). The provider I worked with did not believe me that the color is not what it was originally, and Eye Spy really helped me with sorting this out. First, Alissa was able to look up my order from several years ago and got back to me with color numbers for all parts of my frame in no time. I also stopped by Eye Spy store to compare the original color of the bridge with what had been returned to me at the other place. The associate I spoke with was EXTREMELY NICE, UNDERSTANDING AND HELPFUL. She helped me find the right color samples and take photos of them, so I could send them to the other store. She even fixed the crooked temple at no charge! After being treated pretty poorly at the other place it was a very uplifting experience! Eye Spy truly deserves all the "Best Eyewear Shop" awards they received. Even though I purchased my frames from them such a long time ago, I was still treated like the most important client. read more
