If I could give zero stars I would. Terrible customer service. For well over 10 years, I've been renting two storage spaces from them. They do not care about customer loyalty, and will nickel and dime you every chance they get. Was late on a payment and logged into my account to pay and saw that I owed over $400, which was rather shocking. Spoke to a team lead named Scott to try and get this resolved and he just talked over me the entire time on our phone conversation- could barely get a word in. I will never ever recommend any extra space facility to any of my clients and I cannot wait to get my things out of there. Such a shame- DO BETTER. read more

Clean, well-maintained storage facility. Once or twice I didn't put the lock on properly and received a call the same day. The staffer who signed us up was extra considerate and gave us a locker at the end of a row and close to the elevator. We've had the locker for over 3 years. Even though the price goes up every year, we are very pleased with this particular site and recommend it!!!! read more

I have been renting my storage unit for a year now and I have been loving it. First, my monthly payment is an an adjustable number for the space in my unit. Second, the hallway area is clean, meaning I haven't seen animal (rats, spiders etc) pop. Lastly, the front desk people (don't remember their names) are really kind compared to the people in the storage building I use to rent. The facility is adequate, well-maintained. The only way to avoid the rent increase (usually MUCH more than 13%) is to prepay for the year or more at the time of the initial rental. I was storing some antique furniture. After the year was up my rent doubled. I sold some of my things so I tried to reserve a smaller room. The very rude manager told me that, since I was already a client, I was not eligible for a better rate. In fact, he implied that I was dishonestly gaming the system, promotion hopping as he termed it. When I pointed out that Extra Space was dishonest in that they increase the rent arbitrarily after the first three months (their usual tactic) he responded, You signed the contract. It says they can do that. They can, but should they? Imagine your landlord doing that three months into your apartment lease and suddenly you can't afford your home. Worst of all, I was traveling on business far from Chicago when this happened so I had to wait months to find a better solution. Now I'm at Public Storage and I couldn't be happier. AVOID Extra Space if you can. read more

Find someplace else!!! After having a unit there for years my rent was increased $80.00 per month. When talking with the DM I asked if she thought that was a fair increase. When we arranged online to rent a storage space, we saw only that the space was 5'x5' and should accommodate a few pieces of furniture. We got there and discovered that while yes, it is 5' x 5' of floor space, the door was too small to accommodate our couch. It was late, the office was now closed, the van had to be returned, we had been moving in the rain all day, we were exhausted and I was beginning to have a meltdown. So we did the only thing we could think to do--we slid our furniture into an open, much bigger and much wider space, closed the door and went back to the hotel to crash. We worried over how the facility would handle our taking over a space we hadn't rented. So we were there first thing when they opened and the young man there couldn't have been more gracious. Because we only needed the space for 5 days, he just changed the locker number on our paperwork and didn't charge us anything more. As promised, we were out in 5 days...but we'd be back here again in a heartbeat. They won our business 100%. read more

Updated Review: so I am in this space longer than I anticipated & there's a hike in the price...so my 5 star review is for the office staff. Chris continues to be an outstanding employee. As for the price hike...3 stars to the company. For those reviewing and giving 1 or 2 stars for this reason, all storage places do it. It's a built in cash cow. So it sucks, if you need long-term storage but if you don't, you might want to rethink how much crap you have and either donate, sell or store it in someone's basement. Overall, this place is still one of the cleanest I've been & again can't say enough about Chris. That said, I hope to get my junk out in a month. Original 12/2017: Super clean facility & Chris in the office was very friendly and helpful. I hope to only be at this storage facility for a few months, so I hope I don't see the rate increases that almost all storage places like to throw at you. I've had to rent at different facilities over the years and I've never found one that doesn't give you multiple rate increases over the course of a year. I think that's crummy of a company, but I certainly don't blame the guys in the office for that. It just inspires me to get my stuff out quicker to avoid the hike. So this review is for the staff. If I see bs hikes in price, I'll put a separate review in for the corporate boneheads. So far I'm happy with the service I received from the staff. read more

If I could give this place negative stars, I would. I stored my car here for the winter. The front tail light was busted when I came to pick it up. The company refused to do anything about it and suggested I call the police and talk to my insurance. DO NOT leave your vehicle here. read more

I will rate the staff in this facility 5 stars as I have not encountered any issues with them and they are very professional, and efficient. The one star rating is for the way this company conducts its business. I started storing my vehicle in this facility March 2022. My rate started of as $132.16 per month. After three months (June 2022) I got a letter in the mail stating that I signed up for a promotion and that said promotion is expiring so my rate will be increasing. I did not sign up during a promotional period (and I did not even get the free 1 month advertised when I signed up -- which is ok for me so I didn't even question or asked for it). I emailed the location and they confirmed that I did not sign up for a promotion, however line #4 of the contract I signed stated that the company can increase my rate at anytime with 30 days notice. And boy when they say increase your rate, they really meant INCREASE your rate. From $132.16/ month, they will now charge me $221.84 after being with them for three months. At one point, I was even considering transferring my storage from U-Haul to Extra Space Storage so I do not have to travel between two storage spaces and I'm glad I did not. I've been with U-haul for 3 years now and my rate has only increased $4.00. Overall, the staff had been very helpful and professional and I have no complaints about them.The significant rate increase after three months caught me off guard. So if you do not mind your payment skyrocketing at any time the company feels like it , at a rate they dictate then you would not have a problem renting space in this facility. But if you're looking for long term storage solutions, unless you have a lot of money to burn then it would be better for you to look elsewhere. read more

Extremely good experience.. especially compared to our previous storage experience. We called the #800 number because we were in a bind, they called ahead to confirm unit we needed was available, locked in a month to month rate that was significantly cheaper than other units we priced. We were greeted by Latoya who was kind, professional and extremely helpful. We were given a tour of the facility, all the features were pointed out to us. The transaction was smooth as was the move in. Facility is easily accessible and very clean. Definitely a good spot.. especially for NU students, so close to campus. I choose this place over one closer to campus for the service alone. read more

Super clean. Super nice people to help you get started. Plenty of trolleys around to move your things in and out. Really appreciate the 24-hour access and it's climate controlled too! Too bad after only being there a couple of months my rate went up by 13%! I'm now looking for a new storage facility. Maybe this is the way the storage business works, but I have to believe that there are others who will not jump my costs like this. Other Yelpers who have posted here have talked about this being nothing unusual with Extra Space. As a matter of fact, some people here even indicate they get multiple rate increases in one year. It might have been human/nice of them to actually have said something like "Hi, we know having your bills increase overnight isn't terrific but we need to raise our rates." Instead, you get a "...per your Rental Agreement, we are giving you notice (that we are raising your rate)" Just sayin' that my father-in-law's garage is looking mighty fine right now. read more

They have been doing construction on the site for over a year. I have had my vehicle blocked by the construction crew many times and damaged due them parking illegally I have also seen them working on electrical boxes in the rain they left sharp jagged pieces of metal sticking out they don't care about there customers or there safety read more

Latoya was so wonderful in helping us with our first storage. All of items wouldn't fit in a 5x5. Latoya looked to see if she had a 5x8 , she did and gave us that space with no hassle. So this occurred on Saturday, March 15th. After reading reviews about this location, I made it a point to go with this location and read how helpful Denise was at this location. What made my decision easier was using a coupon code upon doing an online reservation which gave me my 1st month free on my 5x5 unit (priced at $53). I decided to print out the email confirmation along with a screen shot showing the price and the 1st month free b/c you never know when it comes to things like this. So herein lies the frustrating part. I was greeted by Denise opening the door and greeting me and thought this is a great start to my experience. Then I gave her my name and she looked it up and saw I reserved on line. Then I mentioned I have my 1st month free as stated in this email confirmation, etc. She took a look at the paper then told me that b/c there were a limited amount of units available, she couldn't honor the 1st month free. My argument was then why did it take the coupon code online? Her response was: "Well it does say see Manager for details". So I said, "So bascially your telling me, you can apply the coupon code online for a month free but it could change once you physically step into the store?" Then I kept on hearing "I'm sorry for the inconvenience", "I've been here for 6 years and I work on getting my customers the best price" but nothing to the effect of honoring the deal or doing something to offset the $53 fee. The worst part about it was when she said "I can give you the one month free but you'd have to move into a larger space". Why would I do that? I wanted a 5x5 space and that's that. I was ready to move from my current space near Midway Airport to this location and glad I checked in 1st before I grabbed my stuff. I will never recommend this location or company to anyone looking for a storage unit ever. read more

I've been using storage units across multiple companies for about 20 years but have never come across one as helpful and friendly as this location. Anytime and everything we stop over to pick up or drop off items, we're greeted by name by the extremely friendly staff - and they'll even open the doors for us. We moved in a little over a month ago. The spaces are very well lit and very clean. The rates are also way below what we were paying at other storage unit companies. A+++ read more

We recently rented a small 5 x 5" storage unit from Extra Space. Denise, the store manager, was extremely helpful. She took us through the facility and showed us several units. She explained the process and gave us suggestions about renting and choosing a unit. The facility is nicely kept. Denise was picking up small pieces of paper and other random items as we walked through. I was leery about using this facility at first. I asked Denise about the increase in rent after 6 months. She said that this is standard practice. She did tell me that we would receive a notice if this was to occur. We signed the papers and were able to move in right away. read more

I rented a space in April '08 and in September '08 they raised my rent 10% without telling me. They say they sent a mailing 30 days in advance, but I didn't receive it. That's understandable. but then I asked why they were raising my rent only 5 months after I moved in the manager told me it's "standard practice" to increase the rent after 5-6 months and then again after 9 months. None of this was shared with me before I signed the contract. The company is baiting people in with a low rate, not a promotional rate mind you, with the intent of increasing the rent knowing that you aren't going to go to the expense of renting a truck to move your stuff somewhere else. read more

I keep getting emails from Extra Space Storage, telling me I can win a prize if I write a review! Suffice it to say, I am super stoked to tell you my experiences with this company. I live in a condo in Chicago, and have very limited storage space. Whatever doesn't fit, has to go into public storage. I have family members that move around quite often, and since I'm the one who normally stays put, their stuff stays here with me. So, this necessitated my need for 2 storage lockers. One is a 5 x 5 locker, for all my power tools and painting supplies. Another one, that is 5 x 10, holds other random household stuff, that my family members want to hold for now. Starting in 2009, I paid $57 for the 5 x 5, and $98 for the 5 x 10 lockers. It was cheaper than other competing public storage companies in the area. It's a bit of a drive from Bucktown, but again, it was cheaper. Well, 4 months later, the rates for the 5 x 5 and the 5 x 10 went up 8.8% and 7.1% (yes, I did the math in Excel, and I have the credit card statements to prove it). Fine. We all have our expenses, inflation, taxes, whatever. Another 6 months, the 5 x 5 rate goes up another 8%. The month after that, the 5 x 10 rate goes up 9%. Following year, the rates go up 7.4% and 7% for the 5 x 5 and 5 x 10, respectively. I'm hoping you sense a pattern here, as other reviewers have alluded to. All told, after 2 years, my monthly rate has effectively increased a minimum of 25%. TWENTY FIVE PERCENT. It currently comes out to an extra $480/year since rental inception. I've been too busy to actually move everything, but my project this fall is to sell off whatever items aren't needed, and cancel my rental units. I'm assuming the constant rate increases is just their business model. They make the calculation that people are too busy, bothered, or whatever, to move their stuff to a new storage location, so they keep jacking up their rates like it's going out of style, because they know the occupants are hard pressed to make any sudden changes. A couple other things: I had to go back to this location several times, to fill out a new credit card billing form, because they kept screwing it up. They would send me a letter stating that my storage units haven't been paid. Sorry, but they *were* paid, *YOU* were the ones who screwed up my billing data. It's hilarious that their first reaction is to blame the customer, when it's their own staff that created the problem to begin with. And finally, this public storage is literally across the street from Skokie's sewage treatment facility. So, it literally smells like poo, everywhere in the facility. Let's just say my trips there are as short as humanly possible. In short, I can't wait to cancel my storage units there, so I don't have to deal with their constant rate increases, and the thought of driving into an olfactory wall of poo every time I have to retrieve something from my locker. If you don't believe me, drive to the intersection of McCormick and Howard with the windows down. Take a big whiff. Then go into this location, and ask how often, and how much, they'll increase your rental rate every 5-6 months. So Extra Space Storage, how do you like them apples? There were several people standing by the doors, because no one could get in. Everybody was locked out, no one's code worked! I moved my storage from Public Storage to Extra Space and saved a great deal of money. The staff is friendly and I didn't have to buy the extra very expensive storage insurance since I had my own renter's policy. My rate is locked in for a year - couldn't have been happier. read more

This is a great place. Clean, nice workers, safe feeling. The manager Marty is very nice and helpful. My only complaint is that there is no light in the storage locker and so in a large locker (10x20) it's pretty dark. So if lights are not added, leave a flashlight or some bright light in your locker. Some units have electric outlets outside. read more
