AWFUL! My storage unit was broken into and they stole my husbands heavy duty tools, which came out to ~ $10,000 loss! Their security cameras are terrible and record low quality images and they only have a few cameras. The cameras really give you a false sense of security. The thieves literally just broke into the unit and it was recorded on camera, but the quality was so poor that the thieves/ their car could not be identified. Furthermore, Extraspace did not call the police and changed the door and ruined any potential evidence so really there was nothing the police could do once we called them! In addition, we had many issues there. Definitely, felt targeted since my husband stored his tools there and many times would need to go to the storage unit daily with his crew to pick up and drop off tools. It was pretty clear we're immigrants and really we just kept on receiving several petty complaints from management. There were several other companies/people who stored their tools there and would also pickup their tools. Anyhoo, in the end we had to leave the storage unit and were glad to leave, but we were promised refunds for the remaining days we had paid for and would not be using since we moved out and never recieved it. This was over 1 year ago Glad we left!!! Public space storage is better! Public space at least has motion sensors around the buildings and an automated system where the police will automatically arrive if the sensors go off after hours! read more

Very rude manager who accuses people of random stuff. Causes people to talk sternly and uses that video footage against them. Threatens to charge their account an insane amount for nothing. The bathroom is never clean when we use come to use the storage unit. Piss and shit puddles everywhere and they say they just cleaned it when everything looks just as we saw it 4 days ago. Extremely rude and jealous manager who preys on people who she feels like don't deserve anything. read more

DO NOT RENT HERE! BEWARE! my unit (at Cedar and 2nd) was mysteriously entered and my most valuable possessions were stolen... Including my laptop, bike... basically everything of value. PLEASE, If you've been victimized by this facility, had your belongings stolen, get in touch with me by requesting I "friend" you here on yelp. I know there are many out there, as Berkeley Police told me this place has a history of theft. I would like us to help each other. The response of the "customer service" person at the facility was hostile, and that's not an exaggerration. She berated me and hung up on me. They left me feeling victimized and traumatized a 2nd time. As long as there are other storage places in Berkeley go anywhere else. Rented a space online a couple of weeks before our move. We went to check it out and found it to be too small and pillars in awkward places cutting into space. We decided to upgrade. We first called and were told that we could upgrade and receive it at the online price, just come in and they'll fix it. We went down to the office and we're told the online price we were physically looking at wasn't real, and he didn't know where we got our information from and comeback Monday. We arrive Monday and are told that prices aren't matched, in order to upgrade we would have to get the other unit and then cancel the first and we would not get our money back, prorated, nada. To boot, the original demeaning guy (on Monday) made a fake, loud, phone call to verify there was absolutely no way to help us. DO NOT RENT FROM THEM. read more

I wish I had read reviews before I chose this company - merely because they were right up the road. They claim climate control, but it is not - feels great in the office and lobby, but using today as an example, it was 80 degrees inside and 87 out. They charge way too much money for that in itself! You want a reputable company?? Go to LIFE STORAGE!! I have used them on and off for over l5 years and never had a problem. My daughter is a student at Berkeley and stored her things here over the summer. She received a call in July letting her know the unit she rented had been broken into. We are out of state and they refused to send pictures. When she got back on campus and went to pick up her things, virtually all had been stolen. Management told her to file a police report. The police initially did not respond but we were eventually able to file a report over the phone. The police were very nice and shared that this facility is NOT secure and is frequently broken into, causing them to take frequent reports. They said they had advised the company on multiple occasions to improve security with no response. This is NOT a secure storage facility and I highly recommend you not use it unless and until something is done to improve security. We are still working on filing the insurance claim (they want receipts and record of where and when everything was purchased). Needless to say, it is not an easy process. read more

I really appreciated the friendliness of the staff and the cleanliness of the facility and the convenience of the location. I also felt had when, after a few months, the price on my unit increased. At that time, of course, my stuff had been put in and to pull it out would be a huge waste of time. Somehow, I would like Extra Space Storage to be more up front about their pricing, and not subject the local customer to pricing fluctuations from corporate headquarters 3 states away. Ultimately, I ended up moving my stuff to another storage place nearby and have been much happier overall. read more

2 stars for cleanliness and location and a somewhat friendly staff. Otherwise, I can only recommend this place if you sign up online for autopay and and only plan on using the storage for a short period of time. I had no issues - signing up, moving in, cancelling and moving out all went fine. However, as has been mentioned before, my main complaint is the regular rate increases. I just re-read the lease, and they do not specify that there will be regular increases, only that they CAN increase the rates if they give 30 days notices: from page 2 of CA lease: "7) All terms in this Agreement are SUBJECT TO CHANGE upon 30 days prior written notice to Occupant, including, without limitation, rental rate changes, usage and other charges." from page 4 of CA lease: "POLICY CHANGES: I understand that I will receive one month's notice of changes to the policy and/or premium rates, and the policy and/or new rate shall be effective on the 1st of the month following the month in which advance notice of such change is provided." I signed up in July and my rates were to be raised in December but I moved out before. I don't find any email about the rate increase - they must have sent it via postal mail which I never read (not a good idea btw). Anyway, today I received an email about a class action lawsuit - at first I was hoping it was to do with the price increase, but it has more to do with if you were denied access for not paying and had to pay foreclosure fees: http://www.selfstorageclassaction.com/ So not really a consumer friendly business - they settled out of court to avoid litigation and are only paying $10 or $20 depending on your case. These people are the biggest crooks in the storage business. They bait and switch you on the units, threaten to auction your items if you're late for 30 days, charge you fees for liens and late notices and raise your rent without giving you proper notice! I've never dealt with such a flagrantly dishonest company in my life! The only reason I'm still there is that I'm out of the country and have no choice. Don't do business with them. I've been a customer of Extra Space in Berkeley for several years and was generally happy until recently, when they raised the cost of my unit twice in a year (its been raised a few times before that as well). I was just appalled that they raised the rate again so soon and this time by an extra $20/month. The gal I spoke with on the phone when I called to complain confirmed my suspicion that other folks get a cheaper rate on the exact same type of unit. Basically, the longer you are there, the worse they treat you - they know that moving your things to another location will be cumbersome and they take advantage of it by consistently raising the prices. If they raised prices for all customers to pay for rising employee costs or operations, I might have an easier time swallowing the increase, but that's clearly not what they are doing. It will be a few months before I can tackle moving all of my things out but they've definitely lost me as a customer. read more

One point off: we filled out the paperwork to have our monthly fee paid automatically by credit card--twice!--and yet they continued to send us a paper bill. I tried a third time by phone, but they told me that I'd have to visit in person. In short, over an hour wasted messing with bills and unheeded forms. One point off: they tagged my lock with a sticker. Sure, it's "just a lock," but it's *my* lock, and you didn't ask my permission to deface it. One point off: extra-strength adhesive on that @#*&! sticker. It took 25 minutes to get off with Goo Gone and a sharp plastic scraper. A small issue, perhaps, but unethical nonetheless. That said, our belongings were nearly rat-pellet free, which surprised me given the distinct odor of rat waste when entering the facility. The place is clean and as lifeless as you'd want a storage facility to be. And our 2nd floor unit was really quite accessible with the large cart and elevator provided. Oh, and the service, while incompetent in regards to the automated payments, was otherwise friendly. read more

This place is ghetto. Gotta say, if the staff is authoritative and treats you like a child, then they are regularly dealing with children or forcing them to behave like children by being condescended to. Moved out, tried to throw away some stuff in their dumpster with zero signage that the dumpster is not for storage residents. Had a staff member come out of the office while shaking her head condescendingly from a distance. Did not know the policy as there were no signs, but treated like a criminal when I was advised of the policy. Had another seemingly teenage girl question me as I was loading the items back up into my car. If you have to be that paranoid, then you are dealing with ghetto clients. Try another facility where you are treated like an adult human being. read more

BEWARE of WEB rates. They seem better than average, but WILL go up to "market" rates within a year. No-one thinks they will keep there storage that long, but we always do... This is what they count on. You begin paying cheaper, then raise price in 6 months then again at 1 year (+20%), then you are paying corporate "market" rates. A good initial investment for them, because then it becomes inconvenient to move your stuff to a reasonable priced storage later. I've been a customer with Extra Space Storage for a little over 5 years but with this particular facility for 3.5 of those 5 years. I recommend you give SERIOUS consideration BEFORE you choose ES for your storage needs, and not just at this location but at ANY location of this corporation. I'll begin with the negative. Countrywide issues that can affect customers anywhere... 1) Unless you want to give up any right to a partial refund of any given month once you give proper notice and move out, I recommend you steer clear of allowing them to access any kind of automatic payment. If you do prefer to use automatic payment, be prepared to pay for an entire month's rental fee even AFTER you give proper written notice. 2) Beware of their online payment system. For over 2 months now, the management of this particular location has been sending requests to their IT department to fix the online payment system. That's right, their website is NOT allowing customers to make online payments for over two months now, and it is also causing late fees to be incurred which the local management refuses to reimburse. Her name is Jaimie W. Today, I spoke with Monique and she put me on hold and asked Jaimie what she could do about the late fee and Jamie said I had to pay it. Again, this is the 2nd month I have to do this, and it's the second month I've been told that even though it is their fault the system is not accepting online payments that I still have to pay the late fee once it posts to the account. Opinion: Having been a customer of this corporation, I can tell you that two things come to mind. The first being that the corporation is trying to force everyone to use the automatic payment method so that they can earn the extra income by holding onto entire payments even when you vacate with proper notice. The second being that they are going to make paying online so difficult and expensive (with late fees) that people either eventually give in and agree to automatic payments OR move to another company. 3. Over the course of my 5 years of doing business with the corporation, I've watched the same fee practices occur over and over again. You are actually PENALIZED as a long-term tenant after 4 months, unless you pay for a year or storage in full on the front-end of your contract. It's also not just one yearly increase you will receive either, it's every 4-5 months for however long you stay. The only way you can avoid that rather sizable increase is to move units every four months. Again, 5 years of experience going through this at more than 1 ES location. When I spoke to one manager about this 6-8 months ago, he went off on me...right in the office where other employees and customers could (and did) witness everything. I politely asked to speak with his manager and it was if I narcissistically injured him, and he began to rant that he IS the manager. He was NOT the manager. He may have been the assistant manager, though. I promptly told him...in front of everyone there...that I did not appreciate his lack of professionalism, or his disdain for long-term customers, and the fact that I could easily smell alcohol on his breath from across the counter, and that he might want to reconsider his attitude. NOTE: In the 5 years I've been around ES managers and employees, he was the ONLY employee I ever encountered at any location who had clearly been recently consuming alcohol. 4. I would be VERY careful about coming to this location after hours. In the last 6 months, the number of extremely shady looking characters has increased considerably. Mind you, there have always been one or two, but now, I never come here after dark, which is fine during the long days of summer, but not so much when you have limited daylight in the winter. I'm not bothered by homeless people who are just trying to seek some shelter from a cruel world, but this is another whole level of street person that I would characterize as possible drug addicts, drug dealers or straight up low-functioning sociopaths or maybe all of the above; it's really impossible to say with any certainty. Here is what I do like about ES storage. 1) I like the facility itself. Some buildings are better than others, so your mileage may vary. The stairs were built with a pitch that makes them very easy on the knees to climb. Those buildings that have elevators can make moving in and out, or moving from unit to unit, much easier and faster. 2) I like the extended hours of gate access. This is important if you need to access your unit regularly or often, especially after traditional business hours. Again, a warning about this location and the shady characters that tend to show up after dark. Not every homeless person who is there is a problem, but the drug users/dealers look fairly sociopathic. 3) For the most part, the ladies working at this location are professional and polite and I've generally had good experiences with them. So I normally don't write reviews (yes I'm a lurker), but I just canceled my storage unit and the service was fantastic. The lady over the phone (forgot her name) told me that it would be $64 to pay of my overdue partial balance of 6 days. So I think, ok it was $220 for a whole month, but perhaps there's an overdue fee. Whatever, too early in the morning to think. I gave her my credit card number, and then she tells me that SHE thinks the charge was too high and would look it up for me. A minute later, she comes back and my $64 has shrunk to $32 magically. WOOHOO! Apparently the system was glitchy and was charging me as though I was canceling my unit at a later date. She set my cancellation date back a few days as I told her I moved out earlier this week. Would totally use them again, except I live in Mountain View now. read more

For some reason I always pictured storage places to be a place where they would rip you off, but this just was not at all the case here! I picked them because I needed a storage space really last minute and they were able to help me right away whereas the others were slow to get me in. I called them at 9am when they opened and was moving stuff in within a few hours. They were super helpful and friendly and helped me figure out what size unit I needed (even suggested one smaller than I requested to save me money!) Not only that, but even though I had called in to rent the unit, the woman on the phone gave me the discounted online price. Then when I got into my new apartment late and had to leave stuff there for a few extra weeks they said, "Sure! Just pay for a few more weeks and we won't charge for the whole month...but we can only do this once." When things got even more slowed down in moving in I told them what happened and they said, "well, the computer system won't let you pay only a week or two again and will charge you the whole month, so I'll just put a note to the employees to treat it as if you've paid and you can pay the portion when you've cleared out." The staff was consistently friendly and helpful and even went above and beyond to circumvent the computer system to help me! Plus, I always felt like my stuff was safe and that I was safe going there alone even at night. It also all seemed clean to me - much much cleaner than any personal storage shed I've seen in someone's yard or something! If you're looking for a storage place, store here! read more

UPDATE 2: We contacted Jessica at the after-hours help line and she was able to alert the property manager to the situation. He located my kid and got the elevator working. I had a horrific experience with Public Storage customer service in LA a few years ago, so when I heard the initial reaction to my kid's predicament was "too bad, you gotta wait until we open office hours on Monday," I felt like I was dealing with the scoundrels at PS again. All of my kid's possessions were stuck inside an elevator on a Saturday evening, and she had to be out of her place and leave town the following day, so she would basically have to abandon her possessions. The initial response she received was "sorry, we can't do anything to help you." After we spoke to Jessica, she contacted the property manager and he responded personally to this and got the elevator fixed and my kid was able to finish loading her unit. Thank you. UPDATE: property manager is on site. I will update as soon as I hear back. Elevator broke with my kids stuff inside. Property manager called her and told her they wouldn't send a technician to fix it until Monday. Horrible horrible service. read more

They had somebody come by that very day and pick me and my stuff up.Ron even made two trips to take all the boxes that I needed to be stored. The business owners are nice. They helped me a lot. I ran late on a payment by 30 days. I was stranded in the Bay Area and relocated to this area for work and school. I was being hurt and was overworked. The owner of the building was nice enough to let me go another 24 hours without auctioning my things. I appreciated the service. Oh, this is awful. I moved and worked a lot. I was ripped off and had to move out of households where people stole from me. I ended up literally being forced to live out of my facility, as an abused woman. I had to walk to my storage daily and return my sleeping bag, sometimes apply makeup and suits in the hallways and then leave in my heels for the interview. I neatly took my child sized sleeping bag out which I slept in during the night down the street at Restoration Hardware. I checked it in during the morning when I woke up to my cell phone at 6AM ringing with the sound of the freeway in the background. Nobody was ever very rude or hassled me about it. It went on for a couple of weeks. And I work in IT support, normally. Yes, making enough money to pay for studio or 1 bedroom. That's what hard times do but I'm lucky that I kept my storage facility to use like a closet. How GROSS! One thing I didn't like was the fact that my rent kept raising by 5$. I'd get a note in the mail stating that my rent was about to rise. SF Bay was TORTURE! read more

We were in and out of this place lightning fast. The customer service was way better than other storage places, and the manager/owner greeted us personally. Very easy to access and not as crowded as other places in town. Again we were suprised at the great customer service, they even talked us down to a smaller unit for less money, and all our stuff fit in perfectly. read more

Don't rent here. The workers at this location don't care about the customers. I was a customer for 2 years. I moved my stuff out this past Sunday. I called them Monday twice to discuss my account closure. They didn't answer either time. I drove to the site and they had a "Be Back in 1.5 hours" sign, I left. So I did the "Live Chat' thing on the website. I asked to close my account but I was told I couldn't get a credit for rest of the month (which I was fine with). So I told them I would like to keep my storage unit until the end of my paid month. I was told that was fine. I even called them on Tuesday to make sure my account wasn't closed, and I was assured I had it until the end of my paid month. I went today to put some stuff in my storage unit and I was told (very unapologetically by a woman who didn't have an inch of sympathy or empathy) that my account was closed and they couldn't do anything. I showed her my transcript from my "Live Chat", she said "Live Chat" isn't accurate and that I should have called or gone in person (which I tried to do) and she said I could pay/rent out another storage unit (what world do you live in) but that's all she could do. Lady, you suck at your job. This place sucks. Their workers used to be way better people. The new ones are robots. Go to a different location. They'll raise your rent here often. read more

Expect hidden fees. Extra Space Storage reels customers in with "1/2 off" or "1st month free" gimmicks because they make the money back in other forms. The average self storage customer probably ends up utilizing the service longer than anticipated, which they count on. Expect your rate to increase. The rates are not locked. Your payments will increase! Expect to be asked worth of items in storage at time of signing lease. Expect mandatory insurance fees of at least $32/mth. (The minimum insurance charge is $32 for $5,000.00 worth of items.) Expect a late fee of $55/mth. Expect $85 late fee or "pre-foreclosure fee" if you are late two months on top of the $55+$55 late fees for two months. (My items were not foreclosed but I would not doubt additional "foreclosure" charges if I had not paid). Expect prices to increase from month to month. I went in thinking I would be paying $320/mth and by the end of 6 months of service I was paying $400/mth the last 3 months. That's $400/mth with no late fee. Do not be surprised if your rates are higher than the rates I paid. Ask of the last known incident and have them confirm there are no pervasive pests, mice or rats in the facility. Hopefully, they are honest with you. This is just the forewarning I wished I received. Furthermore, I did not anticipate being out of work for two months due to a health emergency. Plan for the unexpected. If the unexpected happens to you and you are not able to pay the fees, everything in your unit will be lost. So, when you consider Extra Space Storage, think, Extra [Fees] Storage. read more

I have had nothing but good experiences with Extra Space Storage. Partner and I went to the Cedar St Location in Berkeley. Setting up was easy. They helped us find the smallest unit for our needs. In the 9 months we were there, there was only one increase in rent, and it was only a dollar or so. The access hours were great and fit our busy schedules (gate access til 10pm on most nights, which is hours later than most places in the area). When we finally moved into our new place, moving out of storage and closing our account was a breeze. They really took care of us. The manager, Antonio was a GODSEND. Moving can be really stressful, but Antonio was so helpful! He provided great customer service. I don't know how things would have turned out if we went to another storage company, but I am incredibly grateful for the help we received from the team at Extra Space. I don't know about other locations, but if you are near the one on Cedar St in Berkeley, I highly recommend them. read more

Wow, rate increase within 5 months of moving in with absolutely NO notice whatsoever and no reasoning for the increase. From a few other reviews I now see, this is apparently a regular and recurring practice. They may claim it's due to rising costs, but the fact that their advertised rates remain unchanged is proof that these increases are nothing more than taking advantage of their customers. Berkeley Police says: "The facility is plagued by break-ins and thefts" Update 11/26/14: To further add to the unfathomable negligence of the staff here, from the investigative narrative of my police report, quoting the detective working the case: "...I contacted William, Valentine at Extra Space Storage. He aids in security at the business. He nor anyone at the business knew how to operate the video surveillance system. The manager Moore, Ron was contacted but he did not know how to operate the system. Williams put me in touch with a person who knew about the DVR. I spoke with Mario from Ideal Protection Security. He would be able to assist me with the DVR but he was on vacation in Arizona until 10/14/14. I was not able to recover any video from Extra Space Storage." To be clear, I had a face to face conversation with Ron Moore on 9/30 where he told me he would review the footage, in his "spare time". He gave no indication at that time of not knowing how to operate the video system. Furthermore, the staff informed me that they knew that the person responsible for the break-ins was using a tenant's gate code, which should give them viable timestamps with which to review the footage. Yet, nothing. Regardless, the cameras are not in any useful locations. They won't capture the person actually committing the crime if your unit is inside a building. The backstory: I arrived to retrieve my bike from my unit on 9/30 and found a new, unfamiliar lock on my unit. When I go to the office to inquire, I am told "Oh yes, that's been happening. Someone's been cutting off locks and replacing them with their own.". What? Did you notify the other tenants? "Hey, we can't communicate with ALL of our tenants." Really? Pretty sure that's exactly what you do every month. "Well we don't want to scare all our tenants." I think you mean you don't want to get the reputation you deserve, which is an unsecured facility rife with theft. So they cut the lock off and sure enough, my unit has been ransacked. $10k worth of equipment, gone. Police report filed. The detective at Berkeley PD had this to say, quoting from his email "The facility is plagued by break in and thefts there. I see several reports there a week. The management is of little help and their video surveillance is of poor quality." In short, theft is rampant here and the management is unwilling to take steps approaching that of even the most basic of neighborhood watches. Their security is a facade. Over the course of two days, I witnessed the gates kept wide open and individuals on bicycles, on foot, and in vehicles, flowing through unchecked. They have no video monitoring inside the buildings so they can't be help accountable for knowing when your unit is being robbed. Based on evidence at the scene, I know that my items left via bicycle over multiple trips, right past the windows of the office, possibly over the course of weeks. ***Before you rent here, check if your existing renters insurance or other personal insurance covers contents of a rented storage unit.*** This place is very tricky and tries to tell you their insurance is MANDATORY, but they don't tell you *unless you ask* that your personal insurance is an acceptable substitute. Don't let them fool you into paying more than you have to! It was only because I read the contract carefully and assertively asked questions that they even reluctantly admitted this was an option. Then it looks like it's going to be a huge struggle to get my money back (after being told I could). They raise the rates every 5 minutes, so don't get too excited about low advertised rates. Had to press for the special deals they advertised on their website (e.g. 1st month free). They do NOT readily offer this. Staff has generally been pleasant and location/hours are convenient.
