The next best thing to eating the fresh flavors at a farm to table restaurant, is being a grocery store to table.. et al. is literally inside the Foodland Farm grocery store. At this restaurant, you will find food presentation comes out like the chef is also artist, so no, it is not just deli take out on a china plate.
If you are an IG foodie photo snapper, you will love the photogenic details in the presentation, stacking the layered natural colors of purple lavender tinted in the cocktails, the purple flower petals ornamenting the deserts or local fruits like Bananamisu with coffee syrup.
Colin Sato, formerly of Beachhouse at the Moana knows how to cater to the multi-verse of cultures in Hawaii..banh min for breakfast, gourmet loco loco, salmon, fresh poke to short rib arancini, comfort food burgers with Hawaiian beef.. the menu is varied and interesting. The happy hour menu offers gourmet experience at a better value and without the crowds.
The cocktails anytime are colorful without being Hawaii kitsch. Here is a toast to the little details, like I like the friendly size of the crushed ice...
The Sunday brunch I will not describe, as there is already a wait list and we'd like to still be able to pop in for ulu hashbrowns spontaneously. The place is gaining in popularity, and there is now often a waitlist for brunch. I will just say the fresh coconut chia pudding is a clever digestion aid.. and the omelet is light and fluffy as the Japanese influence is tasted in the texture might make the wait worth it,
You could wait at the bar for your table to be ready.. as the bartenders know their stuff... adding clever twists suited for Hawaii's climate and love of flowers. There is a bar if you want to watch the show, or a community table if you are open for spontanious connections, or you could score a glass of ice wine for a mere $75. To say it scales here would be an understatement. You can pop in for coffee, or celebrate that big day with the new graduate, the bridesmaid party, the 3 generation grandfather birthday...whatever that maybe it could scale here.
You will probably need a reservation for dinner. I love the high ceilings, the vaulted doors, the speakeasy entry, the easy parking if you can find the front door...,
Also the wait staff has that aloha chill service that is friendly, present, but not pushy. You are allowed to linger, to celebrate, to finish a deep conversation, or even just be... The kind of place you can go solo, .sit alone and muse over your day and enjoy a moment of peace and serenity before shopping at the adjacent grocery store. That's right, you just exit the et. al and enter the flower section of the Foodland Farms...You never feel like your table is waiting for the turn over.
Harold, our waiter today was fresh faced and delightful in his interactions, yet knowledgable about the menu and ingredients, enthusiastic about offering his recommendations, and unobtrusive in his approach and attitude and gave equal respectful attention to the women and men at the table.
We not only enjoyed learning what beans were being used today in the house blend, or that we could order a double espresso with a lemon wedge, but we love it when the hot coffee came quickly and hot, cold gelato came out icy on a hot day.... the used dishes just disappeared without a fuss. Harold gets double thumbs up today and we hope to see him next time!
We love the cool air temperature, and the lighting.. as well as the decor touches like the blue and white checked palake Traditional hawaiian cowboy fabric backing the bar stools, draped with printed lei looks like any local Hawaiian slack key musician would feel at home here after a gig, despite the fact this is actually a chain restaurant owned by FoodLand.
So, thank you et al at Kohala for offering new relaxed quality dining choices when so many old favorites have closed during this time. We appreciate the opportunity to savor the flavors of our local chefs, in new settings, and glad to see opportunities for outside of folks working and eating Ono grinds without having to commute to Waikiki.
Best of luck to you all!
