I brought my wedding dress to Essy's Tailoring knowing the alterations would be very difficult because of the intricate beading throughout the gown. I had honestly prepared myself for the possibility of needing a completely new dress, but Abdul immediately reassured me and confidently told me he could make it work. He explained that because the beads were sewn all over the dress, he would need to carefully hand sew and adjust everything instead of using a machine. Despite the detailed labor involved, he was incredibly kind, patient, and willing to go the extra mile. When I returned for my fitting, I was amazed -- the dress fit absolutely perfectly and exactly how I had envisioned it. Since I'm very petite, several inches needed to be taken in around the bust and hips, so I truly appreciated the care and precision he put into the alterations. I needed to adjust the length on an evening gown. When I called, the girl who answered was polite and told me that they would be able to accommodate my timeline of about 2 weeks out. Came in with my dress and they pinned it accordingly. Didn't take long. Then 2 weeks later my dress was ready and looked great. They were nice and had my dress ready on time. When it's your turn, they won't walk away to answer the phone. It's a process, similar to once an artist begins painting. My phone calls have always been returned promptly. A master at his craft, the man who has helped us (and who I suspect is the owner) begins to examine the garment and I can see the decision making start to happen as he marks, pins, and confirms his suggestions with our daughter. Abdul is absolutely amazing! I brought my wedding dress to him by referral, and I am so glad I did! My wedding dress just needed a hem and a bustle. Once he had hemmed the dress, I came back in to try it on, and it was absolutely perfect length with my heels on. I asked him if there was any way that we could just hem the front of the dress since I really loved how long the train was and he said no problem. He did exactly that! During that visit, we decided that it would be a good idea to take in the chest area because it was just a tad too loose on me. Essy's appears to be one of the highest rated tailors on Yelp. I even had people on Facebook recommending them to me, so I called to make sure I could walk in (you can) and headed that way. When I walked through the one thing that did stand out to me was how dirty the floors were. They were covered in leaf particles and it looked like the front of the store hadn't been vacuumed in weeks. The dressing rooms equally had dirty floors, and a thick layer of dust on the dividing walls, see photo included. When I picked my dress up, the alterations were sufficient, but nothing that I was overly impressed with. I was disappointed to find white dog hairs throughout the fabric when I tried it on, my guess is that they take a number of pieces home to work on in the evenings. So to conclude I take one star away for cleanliness, The other is for price. If I'm going to spend $56 for someone to take a few inches off of the length of a dress, I expect to have a high end experience. The other bridesmaids didn't pay nearly as much as I did for their alterations, and some of them are in the Bay Area as well. read more
