Golden Thread Alterations is operated by a Korean lady and her son. The business is located in the quiet area of Livermore. Parking is off the street or in their shared parking lot. Their alteration work is very good for what I needed. The price is reasonable and fair to my budget. Her son did all of the communication and measurements and helped me to make the best decisions regarding my suit (shirt, coat & pants). The final product was very clean and I received a lot of compliments during and after my daughter's wedding. We used them several years ago to alter a wedding vest and it ended up being too tight, but we didn't make a fuss. Whatever. I went back yesterday to have a dress hemmed. My mistake. 1. The front desk man/receptionist was polite, helpful, and charming. 2. There were several women, presumably seamstresses, who I smiled at who simply looked through me as if I didn't exist. 3. The price for hemming a semi full-skirted dress was $60 which is more than the dress cost. 4. When I balked at $60, one of these women spoke in a foreign language (Vietnamese?) and the man relayed to me they could do it for $50. I shook my head, smiled, and said, No, thank you. 5. The man then said that $45 was the lowest they could go. I had NO interest in bartering for the best price. I said no again, and prepared to leave. The woman, who never glanced at me once, shrugged and walked away. Her body language made it clear she couldn't care less. 6. Which is, of course, fine. They have no need of my business. After looking at their website, they obviously are high end alterations aimed at an Asian audience. Which is fine. Just be aware that if you aren't Asian and don't have a high-end job for them, you will be treated dismissively by the seamstresses. Their website claims they are a third generation business, yet only the man speaks English, supposedly. To top off my review, I would like to add that I do NOT want to be told one price, then have that price lowered twice when I am ready to walk away. Set a FAIR price and stick to it. I will either pay it or walk away, no harm, no foul. Instead, I am left feeling like I would have been a fool if I had accepted the first price they quoted. Writing this review to share how much I loved working with Mrs. Kim and Wu. This is a small, family-owned business, and the care they put into their work truly shows. We did a semi-elopement at City Hall with just immediate family, and I received my dress only 1.5 months before our scheduled date. Despite the tight timeline, Mrs. Kim and Wu were able to complete the alterations beautifully and on time. Mrs. Kim is an absolute sweetheart--she immediately knew what adjustments to make to ensure the dress fit my body perfectly, and she clearly explained how each change would enhance the overall look. My dress was also quite complex due to the lining at the bottom, but she was still able to alter the length seamlessly. Their pricing was very reasonable, especially considering both the complexity of the dress and the time crunch. I was so impressed that I've already recommended them to several girlfriends this year. I arrived 4 months before my wedding. I gained weight from job stress and my unaltered dress looked like a hot mess on me. Everyone was so calm and reassured me that everything would be alright. They held on to my dress for me while giving me extra time to lose weight (which was my request). I stumbled upon Golden Thread through the Yelp projects tab. It sent out multiple request for tailoring for my suit jacket and this business was the first to respond and provided me with a quote right away. Setting up an appointment with them was just as easy. They booked my appointment and provided detail directions to their shop in downtown Livermore. The lady that did the tailoring was very friendly and helpful. She recommended the adjustments for my suit jacket and the price of it was the same as the quote that was provided. She ask me when I wanted the suit jacket done and I told her in the next 3 weeks or so. She got it done in 2 weeks. Pickup was just as easy as the drop off. I was very pleased with the alterations and I will be back for alterations again in the future. The shop is tucked away in the Old Theater Mall. Parking could be tough especially on the weekends. You might have to circle around a few times for street parking. read more

I will absolutely be getting any alterations I need done here and here only! I reached out through a bulk yelp message trying to get availability for tailoring some pants I got from Aritzia. I'm 5'1" so any regular pant length is going to be way too long on me, even in heels. Woo got back to be swiftly and I was able to set a day and time to come in with the pants I needed hemmed. They sent me the address and instructions on how to find the location, which I greatly appreciated because I have social anxiety lol. The location is in an alleyway with black gates and other shops inside. Once you go to the end of the alley you'll see a wedding dress in the window. Small location but perfect the way it is! I checked in, was shown the back room to put the pants on with the shoes I'd be wearing them with and they measured where I'd need them hemmed. I changed back into my regular clothes, told them when I'd need them by (thankfully I was in no rush), was written a pink slip and was on my way! The whole process was so quick I was back to my car in 12 about minutes I think haha. I got a text message later in the week letting me know my pants were finished - a week earlier than I needed! :) When I finally came back to pick them up the next week since I couldn't make it in the previous weekend, I paid in cash and was given my perfectly hemmed pants in a bag on a hanger. She knew exactly what she was doing and I felt completely safe leaving my wedding dress in her care. My dress was a big ballgown and she hemmed it and added 5 bustles !! She even showed my mom how to add in a couple more bustles with safety pins to save us some extra cash. She also let out my dress. Overall a great experience - they times everything out so that they had my dress for many months before the wedding and I never had to store it which was a huge plus. Although the man at the front desk is friendly and tries his best to be professional and diplomatic, the service here is/ was shockingly bad. Every visit proved more mistakes which had to be re-done. Things which should n-e-v-e-r happen if one cared about their work. Never an apology for the mistakes , carelessness , additional stress and time . After the 4th mishap I was brought to tears . ( now out of time before event ) I was in total disbelief- almost wondering if it was intentional as it defied all logic that this could keep happening to one client. The mom ( seamstress) seemed to not care about much or these mistakes and would shrug . Giving the impression it was all an inconvenience and not ashamed in the least . Baffling ! The son ( front desk ) took on the roll of smoothing over the mistakes and attitudes by saying each time , "we will fix this ". While this helps the poison go down a little easier in the moment , I still left every appointment bewildered as to HOW they are still in business . I understand an occasional mistake - I gave more grace than anyone I spoke to in the re- telling of these shocking events. I even wondered if somehow I was at fault... Although I didn't know how . Mostly because I just couldn't wrap my head around how everything could go so wrong . When I retell this story , to the many people I have , they all claimed they would not pay . They don't know how I wasn't just screaming . I did not respond this way - I remained calm / shocked/ and hopeful in a blind trust that nobody could be this incompetent. ( This chaos cost me hundreds of dollars btw ) I would not be in business if my work reflected low-quality outcomes , many mistakes , undue STRESS at exactly the time of life's most important events . Therefore, I DO NOT recommend this business if it is anything important/ meaningful to you . I came by today (11/16/2024) to get help with having a wedding dress tailored. Even though I live 30-40 minutes away depending on traffic, Golden Thread Alterations kept showing up on all my searches, and had very high ratings. After reading the reviews and comparing between a few different tailors/seamstresses, they seemed the most reliable and well knowledge. I tried on the dress when I arrived, and the seamstress asked me how it felt, and what areas needed adjustments. She was VERY thorough in explaining what was the best course of action, understood the construction of the dress and each step that she would have to take to have the size adjusted and the gown hemmed. They also asked about my general schedule, and helped me plan out that I'd need a few fittings since the date for our photos is farther out. I really appreciate how thorough they were, and the price was very fair as well for how much work and craftsmanship was needed. I had a blazer I thought needed tailoring. I arrived and had them look at it to get their professional advice. The lady was completely honest and told me I didn't need to do anything. Maybe shorten the sleeves by 1/4 inche but that it wasn't really necessary and looked good. I truly appreciate and value her honest input! They did a immaculate job I was blown away I couldn't even tell it was altered . I can't wait to see how my next pair of jeans turns out. Brought my wedding dress to Golden Thread Alterations and was so happy with the outcome! The experience was smooth from start to finish. I brought my dress in pretty early in March '24 when my wedding wasn't until Oct '24. My dress had to be taken in 2 more times than originally planned and they didn't charge more for the extra fittings. They worked with my timeline and ensured my dress was ready right on time. Amazing service, friendly people and decent results with my dress. My dress was still a little too long in the front after they hemmed it because I was tripping over it when I was walking down the aisle and walking around the venue, and also walking up some steps, My bustle also fell apart closer towards the end of the night - it was still dragging a bit, and would get caught on bushes or furniture and the string was on the button fell apart after being tugged on for a bit. I think regardless, anything done for anything wedding-related is expensive so I found the minor adjustments a little pricey. I think I would have felt like it was worth the cost it if the alterations were well-functioned for me. For example, maybe if they asked me to walk while having the dress on after they hemmed it so they could see if I would still run into it? I'm not a seamstress and it was my first time having a wedding dress altered so I wasn't really sure what to look for! But it's okay, I survived with the dress. Regardless, of the issues with the dress - they did have it ready when they said they would and gave extra time if there were any issues. read more

This review is long past due, I cannot recommend the family at Golden Thread enough! I've been going here for at least a year, and they never fail to take care of me. Anyway, this particular time, I brought in two pairs of Rick Owens jeans that were at least a size too big because I've been attempting to slim down. I also like to wear my pants fairly cropped for my boots etc. So it presented a bit of a challenge. As you can see, they turned out AMAZING. Both pants work beautifully for my boots and my crazy low tops. I'm over the moon and couldn't be happier. I plan to take more of my pants to them when they arrive next week. read more

Golden Thread Alterations did an amazing job on a pair of leggings I had! I reached out through Yelp to receive a quote from them, and appreciated how easy it was to get an estimate. Woo was super quick to respond to questions I had, which made it even easier for me to decide to go to them. They are located at the Old Theatre Mall in Downtown Livermore; once you walk through the black gates, they're all the way at the far back. They are a family-owned and Asian-owned business too! Mrs. Kim is I believe the seamstress here, and I found on their website that the store has over 40 years of experience. I arrived shortly after they opened after making an appointment to visit on Yelp. The process was quick and easy: you try on the clothes you wish to hem, they make adjustments, you get a quote, and boom! I was in and out literally in less than 10 minutes, and my pants were ready 24 hours later to pick up. My leggings look great! The seam was done perfectly, and it looks as though it was straight out of the store I bought it from. No loose threads and a perfect fit! It costed $18 to get done. Cash and card are accepted! I really loved how friendly everyone was from my initial conversation requesting a quote, to the pick up where Mrs. Kim thoroughly showed the work she had done. I wish we had had the great experience other people have had. For 715 dollars, I would have thought we would (bodice adjustment, hem of one underskirt and attachment of tissue for a draped sleeve.) On our first appointment- more than a month before the wedding, we went over what we wanted (draped sleeve, fitted bodice). I bought the dress a size too large so it could be perfectly fit for my daughter. When we came to get the dress, instead of a draped sleeve, the tissue and been tacked under the arm with two streamers hanging down. But the worst thing was- the bodice was so tight we could not close it. They said they would fix it ( now bear in mind, my daughter had actually lost weight since her first fitting.) So she starved herself- worried the dress would not fit at the next fitting - a WEEK before the wedding. I bought a second dress, just in case, since I couldn't have had her walk down the aisle in the dress as it turned up the first time. The second time the sleeves were correct and the dress sort of fit. Unfortunately, it was still so tight she almost fainted at the wedding and we did an emergency shift in dresses- thank God we had the extra dress. For 715 dollars for alterations I would have expected much better. I thought with reviews, such as they have, I would have had a better experience. But I did not. Would never go here again. read more
