    Breakfast bowl
    Matt B.

A to-go only, all-vegan breakfast eatery with top-notch food. I showed up around 9:45am not having realized it was online orders only. The woman who greeted me was nice enough to put my order through in person. I ordered the breakfast bowl ($12 after tax), and she had it out in 5 minutes -- nice! The bowl comes with tofu scramble, vegan chorizo, and breakfast potatoes, on a big bed of spinach, drizzled with spicy mayo and perhaps some Mexican spices. It was lightly spicy, very flavourful, and filling. Really great stuff. Highly recommended.

On my first trip to Cincy this past July I made it a mission to find some local vegan options. Oh BOY am I glad I found Essen! I stopped here for weekend brunch and got the comfort platter and the sausage & egg on a biscuit. Yes that meant I had double biscuits... which also meant I had double the heaven. Somehow these biscuits were the most fluffy, melt-in-your-mouth biscuits I have ever had.... And they were vegan!!! I'll be back in town soon for work and I will most definitely be coming back to try more!

Run, don't walk to Essen! Shoot, everyone needs to do us all a favor and keep Essen around for as long as possible. If you're looking for vegan food - this is your spot. If you're looking for a place to get vegan food for a vegan date, or if you want food that's so good a non-vegan will ask to go back, this is your spot. You can order on their website for pick up, even curbside service; perfect for Covid times and even rainy days. Speaking in specifics now: - Their smoky truffle mac and cheese is a must-try. I am not even a fan of mushrooms but I can't keep myself from ordering a side with everything. I got a side with my order of their Buckwheat Soba Noodle Bowl today! - Their Buckwheat Soba Noodle Bowl was super good, really fresh ingredients, including brussels and edamame, carrots, and marinated tofu. It was a filling meal, and actually I waited awhile before getting into that irresistible mac. - Their breakfast menu is also on point! I've had their breakfast sandwiches with "sausage" and their substitute hollandaise sauce, with added avocado of course. I look forward to trying more on their menu and I'm just so glad they're here!

I picked up a vegan carrot cake from Essen. They don't have room to sit so I just did pick up. I ordered over the phone. They packaged the carrot cake slice neatly and had it ready for me when I arrived - it was a pretty seamless handoff. I liked the carrot cake itself. Didn't like the icing as much. I plan to go back and try their other food items soon!

Great spot from the look to the feel to the food. It's located in a sketchy part of CinCii which wouldn't surprise me if the foot traffic is affected by that. I found this place on Yelp and immediately decided to go by to try the Rueben. This place is 100% Vegan which is super dope to me as I eat Vegan 99.8% of the time. After seeing pictures of the Rueben and reading reviews I was SET on getting it. Parking is non existent as the entire one way street/block is No Parking/Tow zone. I drove around the block maybe 3 times and when I found parking a block away there was too many sketchy people for me to walk. I ended up calling to order and just park in the No parking to pick up my order and the owner let me know that I could park on the side with my flashers. There is a little driveway not so much driveway right past the place on the left. There is a door to someone home there but it can fit about 4 car with two being blocked in. I decided to take him up on that and go inside to order and see what else was to be offered. I ended up sticking with the Rueben but I can't say I wasn't tempted by the other many options. I REALLY enjoyed my Rueben it was so much flavor, the aroma was just as yummy. People were walking pass my office coming in asking "where did you go and what is that heavenly smell" of course I answered that the heavenly smell was ME (lol). The Rueben was wrapped so neatly and next to it was two neatly wrapped pickle spears. Those pickles were so good they had a spice to them but wasn't like a spiced dill. I enjoyed this place so much I've been one a week for 3 weeks and took others back with me. My colleagues have tried the veggie burger and the grill cheese that was just released last week when we came in and came with tomato soup. Did I mention you get a bag of chips? I tried the red wine and vinegar chips one day. They were interesting but good just a little strong. Mostly recently I had the Sea Salt Kettle chips which were good. I'm a plain Jane when it come to chips and such so they were right up my alley. There is a Check-In offer currently (Sept.2019) Check-In on Yelp you get a yummy Vegan chocolate chip cookie. Be sure to show the offer to the person taking your order as it appears in the app after your check in.

Amazing! Vegan, authentic and simply delicious. First time and will surely be back. I never eat, when I do I steer away from chain restaurants where food is loaded with msg. Total for acrambled tofu, biscuits and portobello mushroom gravy along with two breakfast burrito one with tofu scramble and the other with soyrizo, total came to less than $30 and leaving you full for hours

    Tacos - so good.

I'm not vegan, but after living in Cali for years, I'd grown accustomed to awesome vegan food when I was either out with vegan friends or just trying to pretend to be a good person. Unfortunately, Cincinnati has for the most part not caught on to healthy, high-quality vegan food. Most of my previous attempts yielded hummus and bread or really awful Indian food, at best a weird veggie burger. Essen has saved the day!! The menu is short, but it changes every week, and oh. my. god does it look delicious every single time. I tried the tacos, and they were both fabulous and loaded with all the delicious vegan staples that are apparently still a secret in this part of the country - jackfruit, radish, poblano, etc. Ordering online was super quick and easy. It's a bit pricy for take-out lunch, but since they are using such high quality ingredients and it looks like their business model is mostly relying on catering, no surprise. It's a shame this place is down the street from me but only open for lunch, when I'm normally at work - my lazy ass would be picking up dinner here all the time if they were open later!

Is there a walk-in seating area inside? If so, how many people can it accommodate?

No, not really. The two times I've been in, someone was sitting at the one and only stool right in the area where you pick up your food. It really is a grab and go kind of place.

I was here a couple of weeks ago, in town on work, and coming in for lunch because this place was within working distance of the office I was visiting. I love Irish bars, and regularly go to the one nearest me, so I was hoping for a good experience. As I said, the ambiance and decor was at least pretty good, and the food I had was a mushroom Swiss burger which was okay but not exceptional. The problem was the really bad service. I was there at midday for lunch, there were a couple of folks drinking at the bar, and one other table of people seated at around the same time I was. They took more than 5 minutes to simply come and take my drink order. . .and the server had an attitude when I let him know I wasn't there to drink beer. He started by rattling off beer options, and when I asked what soft drinks they had, he told me the soft drinks they had. . .then, dripping with sarcasm, he says "or we could fix you a Shirley Temple" with a really nasty attitude. I ordered my beverage, and when he came back almost 10 minutes later (!) with my drink, I place my food order, which he takes without comment. My food takes over 30 minutes to come out, and he never came back once to check on me, refill my drink or generally do anything. Once I politely asked him about soft drinks, making it clear I wasn't there for beer, it's like he checked out of thinking he had to deal with me. Things were slow before then, but got worse after that. It's not like the place was crowded and he had a lot of tables to deal with. He brought the check back, and he was actually prompt in taking my money for the check. I left, and pretty much had used up my entire lunch hour despite only being right across the street from my office the whole time.

Both were friendly & acknowledged the birthday girl in our party. Atmosphere is great. You could comfortably walk in wearing jeans or come dressed up. Neither would be over or under dressed. The menu has juuuust the right amount of options, which is great! Heather was our waitress & while she was kind, her service skills were lacking. Granted we weren't at a Michelin Star Restaurant, but we also weren't at a dive bar. There was an endless amount of awkward reaching through, over & around when refilling drinks. There were a couple of instances where she actually touched our shoulders to nudge us to the side so she could reach through. Totally not okay during service at a restaurant nicer than a dive bar. We ordered the cheese sticks starter which were so yummy! Highly recommend! A couple of us ordered the Cesar side salad & were highly disappointed. The dressing tasted like it was mayonnaise heavy & then watered down by lettuce that wasn't dried after being rinsed. Even adding tons of extra pepper didn't help. The lettuce also tasted like it has been too wet for too long. The lobster mac was ordered in the group & it was tasty but soooo greasy. So, order with caution. We had the Black N Bleu salad in the group & that was good. The Atlantic Salmon was another dinner ordered & the crust seasoning was delicious! Sadly, the salmon was a bit overdone. It does come with a lobster cream sauce, which confused me. It was only so so & I definitely skipped it entirely. The steamed broccoli was done to perfection though. Not soggy & not too crunchy. We also had the 12oz ribeye & that was great! Flavorful, cooked perfectly! I will add though, that the steak knives need an upgrade. I really wanted to love this place, but we won't return on our next trip to Newport/Cincinnati.

Normally, I find hotel food is just okay and nothing special, but Coppin's was a pleasant surprise. We were greeted by a very friendly hostess, and our equally pleasant server quickly brought menus and asked what we would like to drink. When it was my turn, I happily ordered Coppin's Old Fashioned. I was the odd man out because everyone else ordered the Spring Manhattan. Judging by how quickly everyone's drinks disappeared, I'd say they were all very tasty. I was a little unsure about mine at first, so to make sure the quality and taste were consistent, I ordered a second, and it definitely was not a mistake. I ordered the B+G biscuits (which are made by hand according to server in the hotel) and gravy with an extra egg. Others at the table chose a variety of dishes, including the CVG, Cobb Salad, Bagel and Lox, and several other selections. Based on the clean plates all around the table, everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meals. My wife ordered a sample of banana bread, and I was fortunate enough to snag a small bite, it was excellent. After we had all finished, everyone agreed that my niece had made an excellent choice for her graduation celebration brunch. As my wife and I made our way back to Louisville, we both commented that we would definitely return the next time we were in Covington.

I ended up being in the North Building and cracked up when I walked into my room and saw I was in one of the Lightwell Lofts (a few of us ended up in them by chance, guess they included them in our room block lol). While the room was super cool and beautiful, there was a lot to be desired. After taking a million photos of the gorgeous room, I quickly realized a major flaw - the bedroom is upstairs, the bathroom is downstairs, and the staircase between the two is a crazy narrow spiral staircase. As someone that gets up to pee in the middle of the night, having to traverse the spiral stairs was terrifying lol. One of my coworkers actually swapped with someone who had a "normal" room because he was worried about falling down the stairs. My downstairs tv wouldn't turn on. I fiddled with the remote a bit, tried rearranging the batteries, but couldn't turn it on. I used the ipad in the room to put in a maintenance request, but no one came. I figured I would just let the front desk know when I headed out to dinner that night. Hours later, the front desk calls me to see if anyone had come to fix the tv - they hadn't. The girl was very nice and apologetic, she said I sent the request in the middle of a shift change and someone had accidentally marked it as complete. So she said someone would be right up, and he did come up. Handed me a handwritten note and a $25 coupon for Coppin's which was totally unexpected and a very nice gesture. Turned out, he knew exactly what the problem was - he said the remote was broken and he was supposed to swap it out but forgot. Gave me a new remote and all was good. He also mentioned there is a second remote upstairs for that tv. After he left, I went to look for it - there was no second remote. We held our meetings in the Scheper Room, which was also beautiful. The room was absolutely freezing the first day and I'm someone that prefers it a touch colder and was uncomfortable. We had to get them to update the thermostat and then in the afternoon it was way too hot. We had food brought in from the hotel and it was all fine, nothing super memorable. There was soup at lunch but the sign didn't even say what it was - just "chef's choice." The Italian hoagies were way too big and needed to be cut in half, I couldn't even finish half of one. The salad with fruit/pecans/etc was my favorite though. They had the completely wrong password on the tables for the Wifi but thankfully we figured it out quickly that we just had to use the room password. The second day for breakfast, there was yogurt on the menu and even on the sign with all the food - but there was no yogurt. Some of my coworkers were specifically asking for yogurt so we had to request it directly because it was included and paid for. Box lunches to take to go on the second day which were fine, I had the chicken caesar salad wrap. Housekeeping didn't come to service my room until 5pm when I was in there getting ready for dinner, so I was not able to get the room serviced. Just asked them for some more coffee. My conditioner in the shower was empty but I didn't bother reporting it after the tv issue and I had my own conditioner with me, so used that. The lotion at the sink was so thick that I could not get it out of the bottle at all, I had to use q-tips to get it out (it was nice quality, just kinda useless if you can't get it out of the bottle lol). Great local offerings on the mini bar and in the fridge. My coworkers and I got a kick out of the "intimacy kits" because we were on a business trip haha. The Magic 8 ball was fun, I loved the conversation cards even though I just read a few of them to myself haha. Even with the bedroom upstairs, it was nice to have the big double closet in the bathroom hallway so I really was just in the loft to sleep and kept all my stuff downstairs. The location is great, lots of fun stuff right nearby. The courtyard is lovely. I would say this is a solid 3.5 stars but since we can't give half stars, I'll give it a 4 because the staff was overall very nice and quickly fixed any issues, just a little annoying that we had any issues at all.
