Esquina tango is one of my favorite places to go for dance classes, I'm usually there at least once a week. If you haven't been, your first class is free! So you might as well try something new. They also have a great deal on your first month unlimited classes, and different amounts of class passes. totally affordable, they are a nonprofit organization (and do take donation ;-)). Alfonsos Afro-Cuban classes are amazing. I love the Samba classes here. Reggaeton with Kittie is so Fempowering! and of course, tango! There's kizomba, bachata, salsa, Cumbia, and probably more that I can't think of right now. Whether it's a class or just heading there for a social, it has always been a good time. Definitely go check it out. They have some parking spots available, but street parking has never been an issue, I'm pretty sure the building is a converted church in the middle of an East Austin neighborhood and I find it to be very charming. read more

I am someone who absolutely never believed that they could learn an organized dance. But every single teacher here that I've met is so sweet, and all of those who know how to dance in the classes are so helpful and kind. i've been going to the event that they host in Mueller park every Monday for tango and will 100% be starting classes at the studio. I've also taken one free class at the studio for Bachata and it was so enjoyable, I am definitely looking forward to every other class to come. This is an awesome gem of a community! It's much smaller than I expected but omg I had so much fun! The first few hours there was a lovely singer there with a voice like melted gold. They played everything from Cumbia, Tango, Bossa Nova, to other songs everyone seemed to know the words to, and although I knew NONE of the words I couldn't help but sing along as well. That's the type of community at Esquina. The owners got up and danced several times which was Ahmazing and they even joined in on the beginner's Salsa class. The Salsa teacher was wonderful, delightfully funny and lighthearted, hell I even joined just for warm up though I've been dancing for years. - She just needed a wireless mic, poor thing had to talk over everyone -but we were all in it to win it. The Latin band was so much fun, honestly I haven't danced the WHOLE night like that in a while. Great family style culture -it's a place where you feel comfortable right away regardless of your dance level. It's BYOB which is just wonderful. I was in Austin for some training, so I thought I would go and check out the Tango scene. Most places will always wonder what your experience level is, so that they know what to expect from you. The hostess was very kind, she actually asked me a few questions, "Have you been here before?", "Have you done Tango?" "What type of Tango do you do Neo or Milonguero?" etc. The hostess really set the tone for the evening, she was very warm as opposed to the type of hostess that just takes your money turns around and walks away, without even buying you a drink. That type of attitude is contagious to the students, and most of the students here had that same outgoing really friendly personality. I was literally shocked! The instructor, Gustavo Simplis has a very unique style of teaching, it was very vibrant and colorful. You could tell he is very passionate about his tango. I loved the way he talked and the way he was very emphatic in his gestures his movements etc. When he went into that lead back cross at position 4 of the salida, into the lead el pivote/follower molinete, it literally blew my mind. The only person that I really ever saw doing the back cross at position 4 is Osvaldo Zotto (Who ironically taught with Lorena Ermocida, one of his teachers in Argentina.) I wanted to literally start jumping up and doing and yelling that's awesome!!! But to have done that would have been uncivilized, so I contained my exuberance. So we drilled on that for about 45 minutes. Then we learned the sweep and the bicycleta. The bicycleta is a move that is rarely taught and rarely seen. But he made it seem so easy. I try it in Milongas but most followers have never heard of it and don't know how to do it. The classes were fantastic. After the classes we went directly into a 3 Hour Milonga. I was shown so much love during the Milonga I couldn't believe it. I think I danced with just about everyone there. The followers understood the Cabeceo and gave miradas. Everyone followed the line of the dance. Everyone was very well aware of and followed the Codigas. Most everyone checked their attitudes at the door, which is extremely rare in Tango. I think I danced every Tanda with someone different. I have never ever seen anything like that in Tango. I give this Tango studio a 5 out of 5. If I could give it a 10 I would. Next I would love to attend the Austin Tango Festival. I do recommend that you bring a bottle of water with you. There was plenty of seating around the perimeter of the dance floor. One follower particularly impressed me because I was soaking wet due to the heat, she walked into my embrace milonguera style as if I didn't have an ounce of sweat on me. I thought to myself...Now this is Tango! read more

Friday night salsa dancing was amazing at studio. The studio looks like a house that was renovated to studio. There glass walls for you you to check your form and Windows on the opposite side. It was my first time learning the bachach and it was best first times experience. The place was full of people of different walks of life and movement style. The instructor was tall dark and handsome and teaches class every Monday. Great slow pace along with partner practice time. A great mix of men and women enjoying the fun vibe. The night I came out was the social night. First Saturday of every month the studio turns into a dance hall with Latin music. Bring your dancing heels and smile cause the high energy studio is going to keep you moving all night long. I will come back again to continue to learn. read more

I liked that the studio was close to my home, that the prices were reasonable, and that the instructors were very knowledgeable and helpful. In the process, Esquina changed my life. I knew about this place and the lessons offered, but had no idea there were open nights with bands and dancing! We went on a Friday when Seu Jacinto was playing. The school hosts dance lessons earlier in the evening, but we missed those, arriving just in time for Seu Jacinto to start their second set, around 11pm. It was $8 at the door (cash) and BYOB. Perfect! I was a little nervous that I would be lost without the dance lessons, but that was not the case at all. It was a free-for-all dance party, and one of the most multicultural experiences I've had in Austin. It was the closest to the true, soulful feel of a South American night. The room was crowded and hot, we danced and sweated until the band stopped at 1am, we were completely exhausted. A great time! read more

It is wonderfully diverse and run by gifted, intelligent and cultured people. They are of Argentinian background, I think oneof the owners came here as a child though. She is charming, Ms. Monica is such a gifted community organizer, dance instructor and facilitator. Everyone is welcome, it is wonderfully diverse and I always have a great time. There are activities for children, teens and seniors too. We are lucky to have Monica and her partner and to have Esquina. I am so lucky and grateful to have found it. read more

The vibe of the classes are very low key and relaxed, and everyone is given a welcomed feeling. My grandson just finished a one week theater program and I am absolutely floored at what Alana can do. She has the gift of being able to tap into the self confidence in each child. In the course of 5 days a group of children between the ages of approximately 6 to 10 were able to learn their lines/lyrics, perform a play before a filled theater of family and friends and absolutely love every minute of it. When the program ended I asked my grandson what he thought of it. He said it was "really great" and that's high praise from a 6 year old. What an amazing experience for each child. It's really hard not to like this place. I first came here with a girl I was dating. She had been volunteering here for months and getting free dance lessons in exchange. I spent some time with Gustavo and Monica and found them both to be remarkably friendly and talented. The place is nice and lesson packages allows you to try out a variety of dances cheaply. They also have a ton of social events such as movie nights and dances open to the public. New Year's Eve was a nice alternative to Sixth Street nearby. It just feels like a small, warm, friendly family-run place. It's just a good place to hangout and enjoy good company. read more

I had a wonderful tango lesson at Native Hostel, so I decided to try out the classes. I came, and nobody was at the door to check me in, and I waited for several minutes before the class already started and someone came to check me in. I left because I had already missed the beginning of the class due to this glitch. I wish it was a little more organized, but some day I will come back and try. read more

I'm shocked to see only one review on this great little place. You can come here and get your groove on and learn to salsa, samba, tango, belly dance - and get this, brazillian street dance! (If only I my awkward body movements could flow like that.) But my favorite thing about this place is they have the best yoga on the east side. I make it on an irregular basis, and pay by donation. They also have a monthly fee for those that choose to become members. My favorite class is yoga-tini on Fridays. A great way to start the weekend is with some fun, light-hearted yoga and then drinks with yoga friends. Everyone that teaches the class is great, and the class is fun so we get to know each other. Special events are scheduled to promote Argentine music and Brazillian dance, as well as "Noche de Pelicula" - Spanish films with English subtitles. We went here with some other couples for salsa lessons and had a lot of fun.They had both male and female instructors so we were all able to get a good grasp of the dance. This building used to be a church and has a nice big wood floor to dance on. It is in a neighborhood so had a nice family appeal to it. What really appealed to me is it was not a bar with a bunch of loud music. I suppose you could bring in drinks but I did not see anyone doing this. There were some kids there but it didn't bother us. Next time we will try Tango lessons which I believe is their speciality. read more

I went here with a group of friends to celebrate a special occasion. One of my friends had been before and wanted to return. I coordinated with a super friendly lady via e-mail to attend a milonga, which Esquina Tango holds each month. It is essentially an evening of tango. It sounded awesome, but we left a bit disappointed. Esquina Tango is located inside a home. It is charming, but at the same time, it is uncomfortable to use the restrooms, etc. The venue was full of seasoned dancers who all knew each other and who were not too pleased to see outsiders. We were asked twice if we had mistakenly come to the event, etc. It just wasn't a very welcoming environment overall. But it was fun to watch others dance, and although I couldn't quite tell who worked there, the lady selling entry tickets was very nice. I think as long as you know what to expect, it would be a very enjoyable time. FYI, it's BYOB. read more
