Southwest Family YMCA - outside pool

    Southwest Family YMCA

    (46 reviews)

I really liked going to this YMCA especially since this location has an indoor heated pool and hot…read moretub, great for winters. However, the past few times that I have been here, the hot tub has been closed off and I also ended up getting an ear infection for the first time :( Makes me question the hygiene and sanitization practices at this pool. They even have painters come in during pool hours so the entire enclosed space is filled with paint smell and fumes.

Even though it's okay here, I'd still recommend this YMCA. Just a few odd quirks here and some…read moreundesirable effects. First off the parking here is a challenge. Spaces are too small, and you can guarantee your car getting dinged. Mine already has, and I was even in the car when she did it, I confronted her and she just gave me a nasty look and did not apologize. I had to leave it at that since she had a small child with her, but she apparently didn't give AF. I've noticed similar behaviors with other patrons who park there. I use the pool here - it's outside. Most of the inside of this place is carpeted, which is quite odd, when you come in from the pool or the spa or indoor pool you walk on carpet and the carpet gets drenched. Not good. I detest that you have to walk all the way through various hallways and by the gym and the other pool to get to the locker room if you're coming / going to the outside pool. Kinda feels like you're at a hotel and having to walk down the carpeted hallway bypassing several rooms / areas in your swimsuit, or if you're wet with a towel. The indoor pool is fine, but when they hold those Zumba courses there - that Zumba instructor is - how can I saw this - irritating to say the least. She has forced a rule - you cannot turn on the jacuzzi jets during her classes because it's too loud and they cannot hear or talk to each other. This has been a bothersome rule for years now, and many of us have complained, yet this Zumba instructor wins all the time. I get it when you have a full pool of people, but some of her Zumba classes have only 4-6 people attending, they take over the whole indoor pool, she blasts the music so damn loud it's like you're at a club, and they don't talk to each other anyway so WTF?? They could use the other half of the pool (away from the jacuzzi) since there's only 6 of them, so everyone can use the facilities, but after complaining about this - I was rejected. I was also informed by several other members - they have complained too but have also been rejected. It's irritating AF and it's not respectful when there is no compromise. The basketball court is smaller here. The weight room is open and carpeted. The showers are okay, the bathrooms at times could be cleaner, the men's locker room is on the smaller side and quite compacted for space. The outside pool - it's heated during the winter time and it's open all year round. Swam the other day - it was 75 degrees outside temps and pool was 88 degrees, it was nice. But once you get out of the pool - yikes. But it's a nice change of pace here. They just updated the deck space around the pool. Service here has always been nice. Never had a bad experience with the any of them, all very responsive and answer my questions and good customer service. I don't frequent here as much but will go sometimes if it's convenient for my schedule. Can we just work out the Zumba lady and jacuzzi jets please?

I received a guest pass for a cycle workout from my Yelp friend Airon Andrews…read more I was impressed with the gym. There are so many amenities...snack shop, free towels, hydro massage chairs, Normatek compression boots, cold therapy chairs, pool, and real massages. The cycle class by dynamic instructor David Garza was quite a workout! It was only 30 minutes long but energy packed! I was familiar with the Soul Cycle type classes, which include push-ups while cycling. But this class introduced dance style moves, such as swaying hips. It was a real dance party! I was exhausted but feeling great afterwards. We partook of the Normatek compression boots, which were good therapy for my recently injured knee. The hydro massage chairs were taken, so we skipped that. All in all, this high end gym was a great experience. I would join, except my insurance does not cover the gym because it is considered "premium."

Telling me I had 2 prior violations of booking changes - turns out that was also incorrect because I only had 1 prior violation whereby I couldn't make it in time due to nyc subway being stopped. This time it was lifetime who booked me for 60 min when I wanted 30 min. I'm so over the spa here / they never have an esthetician available and charge $95 for a 30 min massage which is expensive by any means and the front desk manager is a bitch!

He was comfortable here right away - dancing, jumping, answering questions and jamming out. My baby loves it too. Live music with real instruments is SO much cooler than recorded kids songs. It's also great that they learn about numbers, animals, colors, shapes, countries and more each week. My only word of advice is the songs are catchy. Hopefully your toddler approves of your singing more than mine does.

If you have kids, you need to be going here! This is by far the best music class I've experienced…read more My 3 year old and 9 month old loved it and were engaged the whole time. A few things that make Songs for Seeds so cool: 1. They have a live 3 piece band! It's a little baby rock music class with music the parents will actually enjoy too. The kids play little instruments during class and then have a chance to play the real instruments after class (and can even sing or talk into the microphone). 2. It's educational. The kids practiced counting, explored another culture (today we flew to India), played a game centered around animals and finding a match, created a character based on colors and shapes, practiced keeping different rhythms, and more all while incorporating singing and dancing. 3. It's fun and interactive. They have the coolest bubble machine I've ever seen. Tons of bubbles that mostly stay up high; the kids were going crazy for them. Very hands on for the kids. There's even a little magic show. 4. Caring staff. They all seemed excited to be there, had good energy and called the kids by name throughout class. 5. It's a modern take on traditional kids music classes. I've tried other music programs, and while I thought they were good classes; for the price I was a little underwhelmed and thought they seemed similar to some of the free kids events at our local library. Songs for Seeds is definitely worth your money and easy to find value in That's it in a nutshell. Go check it out for yourself! *It's a little hard to find - in a Tae Kwon Do building next to a school. Don't forget to bring socks!
