I came to Austin for a bachelorette trip and my favorite part of the trip was Brass Ovaries. I didn't know what to expect when seeing pole dancing as part of our itinerary then driving into a sketchy-looking plaza near the freeway.. but who knew behind those tinted windows were 90 mins of fun?! The place is covid-friendly and clean. When you first enter, they will ask to take your temperature, ask you to sign a waiver, and remove your shoes before going past the blue curtains where the poles are. Alcohol & towels are provided to you for sanitizing your poles or to make the sweat go away. Our instructor was by the stage name Zifatigg Bonbon. She was funny, professional, and very sweet! She encouraged us to go at our own place, would re-review any moves if we didn't understand it, and taught us how to move our gluteus Maximus muscles - which blew my mind by the way!! We also had the chance to perform for each other with Zifatigg guiding the way and throw some dolla billz ;) I came out bruised and sore all over, but it was definitely fun that it has me considering taking classes back home! I have a newfound respect for pole dancers and honestly, I see it like art now. I definitely recommend Brass Ovaries (ask for Zifatigg!), especially for bachelorette parties! read more

I have been going to Brass Ovaries for a little over 2 years now. I have always felt so welcomed, supported, and safe from the very first day I stepped foot inside. I want to highlight their effort during COVID. Natasha, the studio owner, has ensured that all precautions were in place in efforts of both staff and student safety. This includes disinfecting everything between classes, enforcing strict mask rules, and social distancing guidelines actively in place. While COVID has rapidly changed, there have been a few instances in which Natasha chose to move all classes to a virtual setting due to extremely high infection rates in the community. Natasha and the other staff remembers at Brass Ovaries have done everything in their power to ensure a smooth transition between in person and virtual classes. If you were not able to participate in virtual classes, Natasha has been more than willing to work with students in pausing memberships or shifting things around so that "everyone wins". I can't say enough about the studio. It has truly become a sacred place in my heart! read more

The policies and customer service at this place are inflexible and onerous. I've never had such a hard time trying to attend a fitness class. I bought a groupon for 4 classes over 30 days. To start, they had me drive over and attend an hour "consultation" that was totally unnecessary and could have been done 5 minutes before a class or over the phone. I was also informed at that time that I could not take the class I wanted without paying for a fitness consultation or taking a prerequisite class. But then the prerequisite was either full or cancelled for 3 of the 4 weeks of my Groupon, which made it impossible for me to actually take the class I wanted, despite a one month window. Of the classes I did attend, the first was cancelled and I was not notified ahead of time, so I drove all the way there for no reason, despite the studio having all my contact information and requiring class registration. Then, when I was finally able to register for he prerequisite, I got stuck at work and was late. They would not let me in because they don't allow late entries after 5 minutes. This policy may make sense, but given the experience I had already had, being turned away for a cancelled class and unable to register for the one class I wanted, you would think they would be flexible or make an exception. But no. So while they wasted 2 hours of my time and expected me to be fine, there was no forgiveness for me being more late for theirs. Basically, they are super strict about their own rules, but don't mind wasting your time and money at all. Life is too short for a no sympathy, no ease gym. I was only able to use 2 of the 4 classes I bought on groupon. I'm sure I could pay to extend this window....but no thanks. read more

You have to share a pole with another student, so you're 1 hour class is actually just 30 minutes of you on the pole. There's a studio in N.Austin where every student has their own pole so you actually get the full hour. My second class was overbooked so we did 3 students to a pole. The studio is located behind a car wash which means there is very limited parking. Get there early unless you don't mind parking your car by the car wash vacuums. read more

This is just the place I was looking for as a beginner at pole. I feel so comfortable in the studio and it's a laid back, friendly environment. They really pushed me to my limits which I know will allow me to become the best that I can be. I recommend this to anyone who wants to learn pole dancing and gain skills quickly. Tried out the Hula Hoop class with my daughter. Very fun and educational. Jenni was very knowledgeable and skilled in many more moves and tricks than we could cover in several classes. So we will be back for sure. Jenni had a lot of great equipment so we could sample small light hoops for hand hooping and big heavier ones to experiment with and learn. We went to Brass Ovaries for a bachelorette party, and had the best time!! Matthew was our instructor, and he made the environment very non-intimidating and comfortable. He was super knowledgeable and made the learning process both fun and sexy! I would 100% recommend this as an activity for any fun-seeking get together. A couple important notes: 1) We were a group of 10, which was perfect bc there are 6 poles (when split into 2 groups, that was a pole for each girl and one for Matthew). 2) Plan in taking off your socks (they sanitize the floor, and the place was very clean!), and wear tight clothing like yoga pants, short shorts, etc. 3) When you pull up to the location it doesn't look nearly as cool outside as inside. Don't let it scare you away, and def peek into the red room!! 4) They have plenty of water ($1), so bring or don't bring... your choice 5) Its a good little workout (we were all sore the next day!), without being strenuous. I would liken it to yoga in intensity. 6) Some girls had been to other pole dancing classes and mentioned that this was less "exercise-y," and more "stripper-y," which is what we were going for. The classes may be different than a group event though. 7) For a group event, everyone should come with an open mind, expecting to get (and make up) a stripper name, and throw some dollaz at their friends! 8) You will legit learn some pole spins and some sexy moves you can take with you. 9) Matthew is the only person I know who can rock 10" heels and not constantly face-plant. 10) Natasha was THE MOST ACCOMMODATING person as we were setting up the event, and I'm so grateful for her patience in organizing a group of 10-12 ppl. Overall, I only have great things to say about this experience, and definitely feel that it was worth the money for all the fun memories we made! read more

I have been a student at Brass Ovaries for over 2 years now, and truly consider this place a home away from home. My main love is pole! And those are the majority of the classes I take- but! I have also taken several ariel hoop, twerk, burlesque and bootylesque (oh yes) classes here. I leave each class feeling fulfilled and powerful. I have to call out two instructors in particular. Odette is a true pole goddess that has guided me from absolute newbie to Pole 3! She explains difficult moves in easy to understand ways and is always available for extra hands for spotting, if you feel you need them! (which I for sure do sometimes.) Annnnd then there is Zaftigg, she RADIATES good vibes and makes you feel like you are an absolute badass. Her performance based classes have really helped me come out of my shell. It can be pretty uncomfortable putting yourself out there in a big way with fitness classes (with minimal clothes haha) but this place has made me feel like the best version of myself. I have just signed my third year long contract as a member of Brass Ovaries. I have tried almost all of the course offerings including Pole levels 1-3, Aerial Hoop Level 1, Stretchy Splits, Belly Dance, Burlesque, Hula Hoop, Twerk, Etc. My main activities include Belly Dance, Pole, and Flexibility, but I enjoy challenging myself when any number of the classes when I have the time. I take, on average, between 4-10 classes here per week. For the quality and dedication of instructors alone, Brass Ovaries deserves a 5. The instructors are very well educated in what they teach and passionate as well. However, the true reason I give Brass Ovaries a 5 is due to the positive atmosphere and sense of community which I have never experienced before in any setting. Brass Ovaries is truly an inclusive place and the instructors and students will make you feel welcome no matter your gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, age, walk of life, or any other self-identifying factor. The folks at Brass Ovaries are truly loving and caring and will welcome you with open arms. For me, this is the perfect atmosphere to build strength, confidence, fitness, and truly a caring and nurturing relationship with yourself and others. I always look forward and feel motivated when I know I will be attending class at Brass Ovaries later that day. Only Caveats: Pole dance and aerial dance/fitness/art are definitely extreme sports. Expect to be challenged and listen to your body and look after it accordingly. If you haven't been exercising much, please take it slow. Your progress will be more sustainable and your body will thank. I went into my first lesson practically blind--a frail, scared, fledgling. But I soared out of that studio like a Phoenix, baby! My one-on-one pole 101 (ish?) lesson with Therese was AmAzInG. She quickly figured out what moves I would grasp easier then through in some tricky ones in that I've actually been practicing at home (obviously not the ones involving a pole, and NO street signs do not have the same effect)! Though it was challenging, it was definitely a rewarding experience. 10/10 will pole dance again!! read more

NEW EXPERIENCE: I finally spoke with the owner of the studio on the phone. The only reason I am so frustrated with this place is because my problem will not be resolved. All I need as a customer is to have my initial problem resolved. That is - the $10 taken from my credit card refunded back onto my credit card. Well, I spoke with the owner and we got absolutely nowhere. She mentioned my Yelp review and said that now SHE has a problem. I told her that the reason the Yelp review exists is because I am an unsatisfied customer who cannot get her problem resolved. It makes sense to think that once my problem is resolved the negative experience no longer exists. Right? The owner has turned this whole thing into an even more complicated issue. She claims that her credit service "doesn't let us just give refunds all willy nilly like that" (exact quote). They have given me a $10 class credit because of the issue. I explained that it doesn't change the fact that ten of my dollars from my credit card have now been transferred into money that benefits them. The ten dollars they took was money that was mine to spend how I chose fit - not to be taken by their company and used as class credit for an issue they caused. She tells me that she wants to have my friend and me come take an hour long class and we will walk away "feeling a hell of a lot better about Brass Ovaries" and "with ten dollars in [my] pocket". I told her: "As of right now, I have written off taking a class at Brass Ovaries. I have now had to dedicate hours of my time trying to resolve an issue that was put upon me when all I tried to do was sign up for a class." She condescendingly responds: "I'm saying I want to change your mind about the problem that you've had to dedicate hours of your time to trying to resolve that was put upon you when all you tried to do was sign up for a class." Really? Really? We go on for about 20 minutes. I try to make it perfectly clear that the problem isn't the Yelp review. It isn't that I didn't get to try out a class. It's that I JUST WANT MY INITIAL PROBLEM SOLVED. What should have been a 10 minute conversation has turned into a week long ordeal. I told her that, since her credit service apparently "doesn't allow" them to give refunds (what service is she using? I've never experienced a business database like that), that she could mail me the refund. Nope. She says that the only way that I will get my refund back is if I go physically to the studio and take an hour long class taught by her. I get what she is trying to do. I get it. She wants me to take down my Yelp review and probably doesn't want to just refund my money because there's a chance that I will leave it up. She wants an opportunity to put on a show after the poor-handling of a situation was made public. But, as a business owner, all she needs to do is fix the problems that her business has caused for her customers and THEN worry about changing opinions. We end the conversation with: Me: "So you are saying that ONLY way you will give me my money back is if I go down there and take a class. THEN and only THEN will you give me the ten dollar refund?" Studio owner: "Yes ma'am" Me: "Okay, thank you so much for your time." Studio owner: **Silence** Me: "Bye?" Studio owner: **Silence** Like I told her, she and her employees have successfully exhausted me from trying to get my problem resolved - even though it has the simplest of solutions: 1) Customer does not receive email automated system was supposed to send. 2) Customer gets charged $10 for missing class. 3) Customer calls in and explains situation. 4) Business apologizes and refunds money. 5) Customer never has negative feelings about business and then utilizes what the business has to offer. 6) Peace and harmony in the world. read more

It's harder than it looks, but the Ovaries definitely teach you the correct positioning of limbs for leverage, as well as transitional moves while you reposition. It is absolutely Pilate's, combined with cardio, splashed with strength and able to be enhanced with glitter. How many other workouts can claim that? Catching all the teachers, doing their thing, at one of their live shows with local bands is just an added perk of being one of the only cities in the US to have such a troupe. read more

Be aware of cancellation fees. It is $200 bucks to cancel an annual membership regardless of the reason. It is $10- $30 to cancel one class if you don't do it in their timeframe. I signed up for an annual membership in August 2013 based on their class schedule. Within one month the schedule changed and it no longer made sense that I was paying them $99.00 a month since I could not leave work before 5pm to attend the classes. It was disappointing. They confirmed that the schedule is subject to change every 3 months but that was my problem, not theirs. So, Lesson Learned! a $200.00 lesson but one I will take with me. I would have rather donated it to a good cause. But maybe giving them $200 bucks has saved me money for some other dubious business adventure I might have had in my future. read more

I am addicted to this place! I got a Groupon deal for 5 classes and so far I've been to 2 (Level 1 and 2) and it is the BEST workout I've had in a long time. I work out almost everyday but trust me when I say that you will use muscles you never knew existed. Level 1 was pretty basic but the tricks and spins the instructor showed us in Level 2 were insane. I was horrible but I'm determined to get good because the class is so fun! The instructors are all very down to earth along with the students and I didn't feel shy at all. The only bad thing about this place is that sometimes the classes are overbooked and you have to share a pole which cuts the 1 hour class down to 30 minutes but my last instructor did say that more classes would be available very soon. read more

The quality of the classes/instructors are not worth the price at all. I went there about a dozen times as it's so close to my home, but the place is a poorly run business. The instructors don't seem as knowledgeable/able to teach for the price of a class. If it was a ten dollar class, then I would excuse the quality. And not only are the classes not worth the cost but if you cancel within 24 hours, you not only lose the class fee (which is understandable) but they also tack on a extra $10 fee. It's bad enough I had to miss the class and the money the class cost because I had to work late (beyond my control) but then for them to add on another $10 fee on top of it? Be careful when giving your credit card information to this place!!!!!! I was informed that I would be notified if my credit card was going to be charged for any reason but they charged me without notification. My friend and I registered for a class that had a wait list, but their email system wasn't working properly so we didn't get notified when we got into a class. Their email system is automated and they refuse to take any responsibility for their mistake on my friend's behalf. My main problem is that I was not even notified before they charged my account even though they thoroughly explained they would notify me before charging for any reason. I would not trust this place. It was a hassle to deal with Brass Ovaries from the beginning. If you check other reviews, you will find that many people have problems with this place. It's not worth it. So I get a phone call from Brass Ovaries mentioning my class pass I bought from Groupon a year ago expired last month. I didn't know that it expired just recently and I decided it would awesome to try and go to a class. It's like giving a second chance and I'm glad they gave me that chance. I waited until taking an actual pole dancing class to write this review. It was my second time here but the first time I came was for a stretching class. I just came from a weekend of running 8 miles in total and I needed to stretch out. Brass Ovaries is a tight knit community but very welcoming. The instructor introduces herself to me and mentions that she hasn't seen me before. I felt kind of embarrassed by that. The stretching class helped me a lot. Sunday, I took a beginning pole dancing class, Pole 1 Routine 6. It was tough. You hear squeaks which is my skin sliding down the pole. If you couldn't grip the pole then they had this spray which really dries up your skin. Odette was way awesome and patient with me and the rest of the class. I can handle certain moves (not well of course) thanks to boot camp and half-marathon training. Pole dancing is something way different. There's athleticism but more importantly grace to pole dancing. It is tough and much more difficult. Anyone could do squats, burpees and push ups? But pole dancing shows different positions your never knew your body could do. I had a great experience and I'm bummed that I only have a 10 class pass. It seems that I'm hooked on this class and I'm eager to go back and go to another class. I wish they had more beginners classes but of course I'm in the middle of my half-marathon training. After I end my training I hope to continue with going to more classes. It's a good thing to work your body from your usual routine. read more

Let me make a confession here... I HATE exercise. No, no... that doesn't quite cover it. I despise exercise. I loathe exercise. If exercise were a food, it'd be cilantro (if you have the gene that makes the tiniest speck of cilantro taste like an entire bar of soap, you'll understand what I mean.) Brass Ovaries, though... this is a different story. I've been twice now, for their Lyra (aerial hooping) class. If you don't know what aerial hooping is, it's sort of a Cirque du Soleil-esque acrobatic/interpretive dance type thing with giant iron hula-hoops hanging from the ceiling. Trapeze meets ballet meets... awesomeness. Sophie, the instructor, is amazing. She makes everyone feel extremely comfortable and she even manages to make those who are-- ehem-- less than graceful (myself included) feel like beautiful swans. Furthermore, as a teacher myself, I can honestly say that she gives the most clear, concise directions I've ever heard from anyone, let alone a fitness instructor. Just as I've found that doctors have awful handwriting, I've found that fitness instructors do not always give fantastic directions... probably because they are athletic and just have a hard time conceptualizing what it is like to be a non-athletic person. Anyway, this is not the case with Sophie. I get the impression that she can totally put herself in other peoples' shoes and get on their level, making the class infinitely more rewarding. The studio is lovely and comfortable-- never too hot or cold, and each of the staff members is friendly and welcoming. I love, love, love this place, and it actually makes me look forward to exercising. Aerial hoop, itself, is also great. You don't feel out of breath or sweaty or deathly tired afterward, but it burns for days to come-- an amazing strength training. I am not the most graceful butterfly in the garden. My ballerina/ gymnast career was cut pretty short when I came out of the womb pigeon-toed, but I've always dreamed of engaging in some activity that would make me feel like the Olympic figure skaters I emulated with socks on the hardwood floors. I'm still a bit spastic for pole dancing, but I have fallen head over heels in love with aerial hoop. When I'm in that big metal hula hoop, balancing myself like some sort of redheaded hood ornament, I feel pretty damn beautiful and powerful. Brass Ovaries itself is a pretty perfect experience now that they've moved to a larger studio. The introductory-level classes have wonderful instructors, especially Sophie. I always feel like she's cheering me on as I work on new moves, and I love that she greets so many students by name. Even though she's obviously far more advanced than the beginners, she isn't intimidating or impatient. The classes can have a small range of levels, with some students arriving for the first time and others mastering the beginner moves before they advance to the upper levels. Still, there's a sense of camaraderie there, and the instructors are excellent at pairing up people with similar levels and giving people options for every level of experience and athleticism. The small class sizes (about 8 per class) really help with this, too. Never before have I so looked forward to my exercise classes, and my burning shoulders and increasingly buff upper arms prove that it's working. Everyone should try this once, but they may not be able to give it up ever again. read more

This place is awesome! I went for a Pole 101 class on Sunday...and now it's Wednesday and my legs, abs, shoulders, and arms are still hurting (in a good way!). During the class, I felt like I was getting a good workout, but I didn't realize how many muscles I was working until I woke up the next day...ow! The class was about 50 minutes long, but it felt much shorter since the class was so much fun. If the class is full, you'll share a pole with someone - I went with a friend and we had a good time sharing the pole! My instructor was Summer and she was friendly and gave a lot of really helpful pointers. The price for a single class is $35, but they frequently offer Groupons for discounted classes. My only complaint is that there doesn't seem to be quite enough parking...I parked by the car wash out front and hoped I wouldn't get towed. Also, a tip for the ladies: Don't wear baggy shorts! Sarah Marsh is an absolutely WONDERFUL INSTRUCTOR!!!! I highly recommend her and the studio for ALL of your Aerial Arts and Pole classes. Me and 2 other students from the Dallas area made the trip to Austin for some new and innovative training in Lyra. Sarah's sunny disposition and knowledge of the hoop (Lyra) made us feel successful in everything she presented in our semi-private lessons. We learned some of her awarding winning moves and tricks, and she didn't hold back. She was very open and willing to share her moves that made her an award winning aerial artist. From the moment we walked in the door, everyone was happy and treated us like family. (So of course I had to buy one of their T-Shirts!!!) Brass Ovaries has been an excellent studio, producing some of THEE greatest performers in the state of Texas. I am so happy we can now say we have had the amazing opportunity to visit and take lessons from one of the their instructors. I can not express enough how amazing Sarah Marsh is. We had a group private lesson with Summer this Saturday and I cannot wait to go back! What a classy affair! If you want to learn how to smack your ass, cruise down Congress to Expose. If you want to learn grace and athleticism, come to Brass Ovaries. If you are at all hesitant, don't be, this class is fit for everyone. If you wanted it to be a bit more sassy (like for a bachelorette party), I'm sure you could, otherwise it was just like learning new dance choreography, or learning how to use a new tool. I guess what I'm saying is that it's very comfortable, not at all sexual. Sure, when Summer demo'd the moves she made it look sensual, but for the most part it was asexual, ha (or maybe that was just our beginners lack of style, ha). My 4 sisters and I each had our own pole to practice on in this intimate studio and Summer took the one up front. We started class with a warm up then got to learn a routine with a few basic moves in it. It was simple enough for everyone to get the hang of it after a couple of tries, but once you put it together you suddenly felt like a pro! Then she put the poles on spin and taught us a few tricks. Awesome! Everyone could go at their own pace (if you needed a break, you just took one, or if you were like me and just kept waiting to have a go at it, that was fine too). My sisters and I are fairly athletic so we got to do so pretty advanced stuff but always moved slowly and carefully, sometimes with a spot, and only to the level we were comfortable. It's important to read the FAQs and your sign up email, etc., you will get more out of the class if you don't ignore the info they give you. For example, wear booty shorts - guess what, no one cares what you look like except you - and you won't be able to participate fully if you don't. It's a workout, bring water, or they have it there. Show on early to sign your paperwork. Bring your own ipod for private lessons if it makes you more comfortable. Final tip: if you have to show your legs the next day be prepared to tell people why your thighs are bruised, ha, this sh-t is hard work and you will be sore! After going to Brass Ovaries for three classes now, I'm dying to buy a pole and put it in my living room! A little background on me: I am not a dancer, I am not terribly athletic (although I do a lot of yoga and aerobics classes), and I am not nor will I ever be a size 2... or 6... or probably not 8 either. :) But I looked in the mirror as Miss Brynn and I were going through the routine she taught me and I was surprised at how HOT I looked! It's true that you have to share your pole if you are in a class of 8 ladies. I think they make the classes bigger because sometimes people can be a bit timid and nervous, but I definitely prefer the smaller class sizes (try going in the morning or try Pole 201). I can now do a back bend (with help from the pole), pole slide, and a mini pole spin, along with a lot of sexy floor work. This is a WORKOUT. I can feel it in my arms and legs for days after I take the class, and the sexy push-ups are great for building your core strength. Take a few classes! They are fun, sexy, and empowering! read more

Natasha and Matthew always makes me feel so welcomed every time I step into the studio, and Odette is a wonderful pole instructor - I feel safe learning difficult tricks from her, and she always ensures to set our expectations right from the beginning, and also make sure that we're learning the tricks correctly, instead of rushing us through it. I love that classes are never overwhelmingly big, it's a good enough size for instructors to ensure that everyone is being watched out for. I've been going to Brass Ovaries for approximately 2 years now. I love their classes! I forgot I'm working out! Going to classes there is part of "me" time, a time to forget about the rest of my shitty week. My favorites are Twerk and Qigong. Danae, Sophie, and Kia are fabulous instructors. They are seriously the best. I have tried it all-expensive gym memberships, volleyball, tennis, soccer, sky diving, running. None of it holds my interest and none of it keeps me coming back. Pole dancing is different. If you want to feel like you haven't worked out at all because you are having too much fun (while secretly getting in the best shape of your life) then Brass Ovaries is for you! All of the instructors are lovely and take extreme precaution with new techniques to ensure that you don't injure yourself, as well as thorough warm-ups and cool-downs. The level system that they currently use also makes your first class much less intimidating. I have friends who were afraid they'd be expected to invert or climb in their first class, and are extremely pleased to learn that there is a set routine that will steadily get more difficult as the level progresses. But that's just pole! The twerk classes are a fun change and hoop classes really help to build upper body strength. My current favorite non-pole class, however, is Burlesque for Beginners with Sophie. This in-demand class features a prop of the week and a routine that is taught and performed start to finish each class, with a short improv period to work on breaking out of your shell. So fun! All of the instructors are extremely welcoming and make what could easily be an awkward experience extremely fun and a great workout! I love it here and couldn't recommend it enough!
