Sam Pullen was the yoga instructor and the stand up comedian was Stephen Campbell. We enjoyed his authentic story telling and comedy while also doing chair yoga followed by a sound bath. Although I was a member of Flow Yoga at some point after it took over Yoga Yoga, you don't have to be a member to attend this event. The energy and relaxation was just what I needed after a long overseas trip. I look forward to checking out their future events!

As Yelper Hannah G perfectly put it, "With how saturated the yoga market is, it was hard for me to find a place that I connected with". For me, that place has turned out to be Sukha Yoga. Sure, Mark (co-founder) has no idea who I am--I've only taken his class once--but that single experience left a lasting impression. I attended his Saturday Bhakti Service: Flow, Meditation, and Sound, an 80 min class that collaborates an intentional vinyasa flow practice with mindfulness. For "busy" folks who struggle to slow down or are close-minded, this class (and maybe even this style of practice) might not be for you. As Mark's fists say, he certainly is a "GURU." He guides his class with intention and power, while also subtly weaving in his musical talents, playing several instruments and even singing, in a way that feels genuine and somehow not cringe. The class is structured, yet somehow freeing. Mark allows you to set your own pace during sun salutations, which feels like pure magic. The experience made me feel grounded and safe. I could have cried with how deeply content my soul felt. BONUS: If you love dogs, you'll probably find Mark's extremely well behaved mini doodle, Mai, practicing her down dog. If you don't, there's a door... NOTE: For first timers, it's located next door to Austin Beer Garden Brewing Co--easy to miss if you're not looking for it.

Finding the studio and parking was a bit difficult, but once I was inside it felt warm and inviting. There was a small waiting area with some seating which led right to the studio itself. Not huge, but cozy. The class started on time and the instructor took us through a well sequenced flow. It was powerful but far from overwhelming. The studio was supposed to be heated, but it's possible I was not near enough to an infrared light which kept me from getting a sweat in. After the class was over, the instructor invited me to join a small group for a Barton Springs plunge. Really appreciated the community building outside of class! Thanks again and I'll look forward to returning and trying out some other class styles!

Gundega's Yoga classes are a great work out, and help me better cope with demands from a stressful job. I find Yoga to be a great way to clear my mind, build strength, and tone muscle. I always feel amazing after class and the following day. The studio is in a residential neighborhood in North Austin which I remember feeling much less intimidating than attending for the first time at a big studio. Gundega is a great teacher, very instructive and knowledgable, and always keeps the mood positive and light. Classes are well attended but never uncomfortably large at the studio. Highly recommended!

I'm one that needs a lot of variety to keep on track with working out. I went to an 8:30 AM slow flow class this morning. I'm not a morning person, but I knew with how stiff and in pain I'd been feeling the past week, I needed to go to yoga earlier in my day. This class was perfect! The instructor was so kind and warm. Cued each movement and was just such a soothing presence. The class was the perfect size...everyone had enough space to do the movements and not feel packed in. You could tell the class was made up of all stages of life, yoga abilities, and body types... definitely a loving and inclusive space. Bonus: they have a coffee shop inside their beautiful lobby area. And yes, I rewarded myself with a coffee after a great morning yoga session. They have other cute gifts for sale through the yoga studio and also some really cute swag for sale. This space was previously called Mantra Yoga Collective. From looking at their website... I believe it's still the same ownership, they just have changed their name to The Retreat.

I was pretty sure I was going to love the Austin Yoga Institute right away. Since my yoga training…read moreis in the Iyengar method, I sought out a Iyengar-exclusive studio when I move to Austin. From what I can tell, the Austin Yoga Institute is the only yoga school in the city that has an Iyengar curriculum. So if you want to focus your yoga on the Iyengar method, this is definitely the place for you. I've taken classes with three different teachers at this point. They all have different personalities and teaching styles, but I enjoyed working with all of them. Each is well-trained, personable, and able to help you work around any chronic problems you might have. In addition, they all seem to be willing to help each other out, meaning that if a teacher can't make it that day due to illness or emergency, another teacher is able to step in and help out. Since I have a day job, I attend the 6 p.m. class on Mondays and Wednesdays. These classes have never had more than 10 peope in them. The daytime and weekend classes might be fuller, but I can't be sure. Another perk to the studio is that it offers teacher training in the Iyengar method. So if you want to be an Iyengar instructor, this is probably your best option. And for complete beginners to yoga, there is an 8-week series designed for people with no yoga experience. So whether you're just starting out, or you're looking to become a teacher, Austin Yoga Institute has something for you. I will warn you that the school's fees are pretty expensive. However, there are discounts for students and for people who practice green transportation practices (taking the bus, riding a bike). And if you're really hard up for money, the teachers are willing to work with you. So if you really want to take yoga classes but find the cost prohibitive, I encourage you to talk to one of the teachers to find out about alternative accomodations.

In other words, you probably won't get hurt by some Bozo with a weekend yoga teacher certification here. Its a great place to get the basics down before venturing out to other flavors. Founder Peggy Kelley has been at this stuff around forty years and has been selfless in the early promotion of yoga in Austin. I have had classes with about half of the teachers here and all were very good. If I lived South of the river, this would be my regular yoga haunt! I've since dropped in several times for some amazing kundalini + sound classes and most recently their New Year's Day meditation class that was completely full! I love the location and the studio. It's very calm, clean, and well run. The owner/manager, Lindsay, is amazing and always remembers my name, which is amazing given my unique name! I love that I can drop in as my schedule permits and can check their schedule easily online. I appreciate the flexibility for the price. They have a big selection of classes from kundalini, yin, vinyasa, flow, somatic, sound, etc. and I look forward to trying different ones in 2025!
