It's difficult to find adult dance instruction in Austin geared towards the older dancer, but Synergy's Silver Swan ballet program does just that. Theoretically, one should be at least 55+ to enroll, but exceptions can be made! The instructor, Maureen Slabaugh, is certified by the Royal Academy of Dance to teach under their Silver Swans model and does an outstanding job of making the class work for both absolute beginners as well as dancers with some level of experience. Currently classes are offered two days a week. I enrolled two years ago and really wonder why I didn't find out about Silver Swans years ago!! I've been taking adult ballet (Silver Swans class) for 2 years and it has been a fantastic experience all around. Maureen is a phenomenal teacher - encouraging and nonjudgmental when you need it, excellent with technical details and technique when you need it. It's not just a good workout, it's also REALLY good for our brains! Every class has something a little extra challenging to work our memory and keep us on our toes. The classes are structured like the ballet classes of my childhood - first the barre, then the center. Maureen is great at giving options for newcomers and experienced students, and making sure everyone is both comfortable and challenged. She is also really good at helping people modify if they are injured or need to take additional care. My daughter has been dancing at Synergy Dance Studio for 8 years. Synergy not only offers great dance training but the teachers are really interested in developing the whole person. This is a great dance studio! The teachers are nice and the routines are great! I especially recommend this to very young kids.

I currently have 3 daughters enrolled in classes at Synergy. They have been there for 10, 6 and 4 years and they have enjoyed each and every year. The studio is very well run and the instructors are very professional, qualified, and excellent at what they do. The focus is on nurturing the love for dance while learning correct dance skills and technique. My oldest daughter is also a competitive gymnast and Ms. Sherrie has been extremely flexible and supportive throughout the years. She has offered private lessons and make-ups for my daughter whenever she has had to miss rehearsals or important classes due to her gym meets. Ms. Sherrie has even gone to one of my daughter's meets to cheer her on! My second daughter has cerebral palsy and all of her teachers have been kind, compassionate and generous with her. They have encouraged her and focused on what she can do and not what she can't do. They have made her feel loved and important and every year she asks me to take dance again. The owner, Sherrie, is a great business-woman, dedicated to making sure your children receive a thoughtful and useful set of dance skills. Her staff is committed to excellence and you can guarantee a smile on your child's face at the end of every class. The highlight of my week is Synergy Studio's Silver Swans class. I feel such a sense of community with these 55+-year-old women. We were fairly happy with my daughter's class until just recently and with the current situation, I will mention other disappointments. Our daughters teacher was ALWAYS at least 10 minutes late and then took about 10 minutes getting music, props, lighting etc ready so the 60 minute classes always ended up being about 40 min max in length. Classes were frequently run by subs and on occasion cancelled due to car trouble, sickness, etc. Our daughter performed in her first recital last year and had a ball.(at another dance school) Upon receiving an email asking parents of the Saturday class if attending a Thursday dress rehearsal was possible, assuming that most of us had chosen this day due to work schedules. I responded that we were not able to attend because of being out of town for a family illness-I guess having a father with leukemia newly diagnosed this year was not a valid reason to miss this very important dress rehearsal. We were informed that the dress rehearsal for my 3 year old daughter's class was mandatory-ridiculous. So after almost a year of my daugther attending her classes, she will be unable to perform in the dance recital because of us missing the dress rehearsal. I contacted the director and wastold that she must stand true to this policy-CRAZY. A wake up call for this so-called dance academy-these are 3 year old girls who are dancing in these Saturday morning classes for FUN, not to put on a skilled performance. Parents, do yourself and your child a favor and choose another more appropriate dance school, like Alisas or Tarrytown Dance that appreciates that for a child of this age, dance is all about having fun, coordination skills, socialization with same aged peers, etc.! A side note, the facility is small, the waiting room is not large enough for parents to observe, the builidng/dance rooms are poorly maintained, and the bathrooms are filthy. read more

I joined my kid at synergy and attended her recital and was VERY VERY DISAPPOINTED. All kids older and younger performed NO good at all. their costumes were good though. What will I do with costumes, when they have no good flexibility.? All kids were looking for stage assistance while dancing. None remembered any of the dance steps. when I shared video with my parents they were even disappointed. I definitely won't recommend this dance school. Waste of Time and Money for parents. When I asked for partial refund of money I paid, Sherrie was very rude to even return when I am not satisfied with their teaching. read more

My daughter has been at Synergy for four years and I certainly not holding back on registering for year 5! One of the great things about the studio is how thoughtful the owner is with her students and parents. She is always willing to discuss alternatives if something isn't working for you. She cares for each student and trying to work out the best fit for everyone. Her teachers have different strengths, which helps when trying to finding what works best for your child. I can't fully express my love for this place. My daughter has been going to classes here since she was two years old and we're still driving across town, 9 years later. And while my daughter has struggled with things such as dysgraphia, she has been able to release her stress and find total enjoyment in dance because of the fabulous teachers who make her feel wonderful. The owner, Sherrie, is such an amazing mentor to these girls (and sometimes when we are lucky enough, boys). She encourages them to be their best without pressuring them to be something they aren't. I have two daughters dancing at Synergy. We've been there over 5 years. The owner is a knowledgeable, responsive and competent studio owner and dancer. She is choosy about her teachers, and is always courteous and helpful. Teachers are great with the kids, and are from all ages and backgrounds. In addition to quality teaching, I believe the teachers truly care about the girls as individuals and are accommodating when the girls have conflicts (for example, allowing them to attend different classes for make-up.) She has always understood when my daughter has had conflicts due to school/ or family obligations. My youngest daughter has been dancing with Synergy for 9 years. I have always found the policies and decision of Ms. Sherrie, the owner, to be professional, reasonable and in the best interests of the dancers. From her policy on coverups, to dance rehearsals, to appropriateness of costumes, lyrics and dance moves, the dancer and the professionalism of the art of dance is always foremost. Ms. Sherrie has personally been helpful to my daughter and me in juggling school schedules and injuries. I was very dismayed at the attitude and policies other dances studios when my 3 older daughters were dancing.
