Worst hair coloring I've ever experienced. I've been watching people highlight my hair for 10+ years and a blind person could have done a better job. It would have been decent if the student actually followed the instructions of the teacher but instead she just sectioned off chunks of hair, slapped bleach on it, and called it a day. Didn't weave any of the hair for a single panel, leaving me with chunky highlights from the 90s. To top off the experience, they rushed through the entire wash and tone, so it didn't tone properly and nothing was rinsed out very well. I left with soaking wet, tangled hair that still had a bunch of product in it. I understand this is a school, and people are there to gain experience and learn, but even I know you are supposed to weave through the hair before you put it on a foil. Students won't learn a thing if they can't listen to basic instructions. read more

I come to Avenue Five Institute on a monthly basis for a facial or a massage and it is such a treat! To be able to have such nice treatments at an affordable price is amazing. Any service I have had has been incredible. Aside from it being a beauty school with those in training, the ambiance is what allows for the services to be at a cheaper price. Instead of a private room for a facial/massage you will be in more of a hospital style community room with several beds with curtains in between. This did not bother me and they still had relaxing music and I am able to unwind no problem (I have been at the verge of falling asleep many times). Staff is lovely and always makes sure you are comfortable throughout the entire treatment. Plenty of parking in the lot as well. Could not recommend this place enough! read more

I had Niya as my esthetician and let me say she's great she took her time I got a facial, lash lift, and underarm wax done by her. She took her time on the facial and to focus on what I needed to have targeted during the facial for my face. The lash lift was a bit of a process but loved the outcome did not have any of my natural lashes fall off or react bad to any of the products as a first time getting lashes lifted! I am so glad I was able to get in on short notice last night! I had asked for an advanced student because I've had 2 so so haircuts since arriving in Austin and am thrilled to have found Kayla because I'm going to follow her whichever salon she ends up in upon graduation after seeing the great job she did for me. I'm super picky, and she and the instructor nailed my color. I'm a natural blonde and then color it, so there was a lot of growth that needed color that I never knew who to go to because I hate spending a ton of money without a referral. I knew a school would have someone watching over the process and am extremely pleased. Now, I can't wait to try all the other beauty services they offer. So reasonable and everyone was super nice. I wenf in the South, but there's a school in the North, too. I like this one because Chikfila is in the complex for a quick bite after work. This was a disaster from the get go. First, I called and made an appointment. Whoever I spoke with didn't seem to have a clue, and it turns out just made up a name (not even close to mine), so when I showed up, they couldn't find my appointment. The girl I was supposed to see (who looked like she knew what she was doing) thought I had not shown up and ended up taking someone else. They took me as a walk-in and stuck me with some guy who clearly has chosen the wrong profession. My first clue was the shampoo which is usually one of my favorite parts of getting my hair done. He struggled for close to 10 mins. trying to get the water temperature right. He never did. It would be cold so he would struggle to adjust it and then it would be hot, before struggling to adjust it back to cold again. When he shut the water off to shampoo me, I cringed because I knew we would have to go through that all again and I ended up suffering in silence with an uncomfortably hot rinse. Worse than that, he somehow managed to pour water down my neck and face. When it came to the actual cut, things did not improve. He did not ever section my hair, but just started randomly picking an area and cutting, before moving to some other random part of my head. It was clear he didn't know what he was doing. He never sectioned my hair or appeared to have any kind of a plan. After a couple of swipes at my hair, clearly unsure what to do next, he left to get an instructor, and long story short, the instructor ended up doing 99% of the cut. I wish I could say that I walked out happy in the end, but I didn't. He left the sides too long, and there was no blending from the top to the sides. As a side note, this is not my first experience with school salons. But it will be my last with Avenue Five. read more

I visited Kimberly for a facial and she did not disappoint. I have never had a facial before and I wasn't sure what to expect. The session started with a steam to warm the skin and help open the pores. Then the aromatic massage relaxed me. While applying various products and using a tool to gently scrape my skin I was surprised at what I had missed all these years! Kimberly did an outstanding job. I highly recommend her. Just got my hair colored yesterday with Judy who's graduating. She did a wonderful job. Pro tip: make sure when you schedule that the instructor on the floor is Katy (Hungarian) because she is the bomb. I'll post before and after photos. My hair was pink and roots were over due. They did a silk cap wash on me to take out the pink and lift the roots 1st so that my hair would not be damaged. Learned something new, my hairdresser of 8 years never did that. Afterwards they foiled my hair and toned it until I was happy without any attitude. Thank you very much Katy and Judy. I appreciate your commitment to making me feel fabulous for my birthday trip. I wish she would have told me what she was applying at each step, so I didn't have to ask. My fave part is the steam and she didn't offer that, I had to ask for it. There was a person right next to us that kept talking. Maybe a reminder to clients that it's just curtains in between you and next person and to keep talking at a minimum. She also absolutely nailed the color I was looking for, and took my dull grey and overgrown roots to an amazing smokey color! She is super awesome.
