Fortunately, the Austin Nature & Science Center ended up falling in the latter category. The main building houses an assortment of bones, shells, and rocks (as well as an axolotl tank) and another building is home to various reptiles. Outside areas include a dino pit (where kids can dig for fossils) and several animal enclosures. What makes the latter unique is that the animals are rehab/rescue cases. They include everything from a bobcat to a porcupine to a 34-year-old one-eyed owl (!!) and more. Granted, Austin Nature & Science Center does offer more for a younger crowd, and it isn't particularly easy to get to by bus, but it's hard to argue with a chance to take in flora and fauna for free.

We visited the Garden and had lunch there while taking in all the unique and beautiful installations. The Alliance Children's Garden is pristine and appealing to all age ranges. We saw from small children to senior citizens in the garden. You can find a range of areas to interact in from swings to wooden structures to cave tunnel installations. Covered overhangs provide shade and welcomed seating. A blue honey comb looking structure is the focal point for the garden. This garden is super convenient to downtown Austin. Importantly, one downside of the garden was parking. With very limited parking, it made the garden less accessible.

Large space -- spread out. You've got climbing structures, slides, tunnels, swings. What I really loved was how they incorporated the playscapes into the terrain (e.g. slides and tunnels were built into hills). I also appreciated that they had activities for various ages -- my 3.5-year-old daughter enjoyed the complex climbing structure while my 1.5-year-old son liked the simple tree stump climbing structure. Splash pad nearby and ample green space to run around. Downtown is nearby so you've got a beautiful view of the skyscrapers. You've also got some less pleasant aspects. When we were parking, there was a disheveled looking man being arrested. No idea how much of a disturbance he created but the cops were taking care of it. There's a paid parking lot that fills up quickly. Terry Black's BBQ is right across the street if you got a good parking spot and want to snag some meat as well (their line moves fast).

I'm so incredibly grateful for the staff and how patient, kind, and understanding they were with him, even when he got into their personal space. A very special thank you to Zaniya and Jordan for being so patient and compassionate with my son. It truly meant more to me than you know. I also want to give a huge thank you to the girls who were initially working in the dodgeball section that morning. You were all so sweet and welcoming to him. Even better is that there are a ton more toys and activities like Legos, Magna-tiles, and even a free crafting table. There are other crafts you can do for extra but since I've got a young toddler what was available was more than enough. There are 2 large single restrooms inside and plenty of cubbies for storage. I also liked they had free snacks at the end when you leave. My kiddo was so pooped that they gobbled them up!

This might be coming to an end because of what happened this morning. My nanny kid has a fractured tibia, play street is a safe option for us because I don't have to worry about dozens of kids tripping over her. We arrived at 9 am after booking a spot online and seeing they had plenty of spots open. The employee who was super nice let me know that they had a large field trip arriving during our play time. The reason we chose and have chosen play street over places like the thinkery because we don't have to battle for space or field trip groups. They should block these time slots out and not have spaces open because this will put them way over their own capacity. I'm not against field trips having places to go to- this is on the franchise owners for trying to accommodate too many people at one time. There needs to be a better system, if there's going to be field trips- find a way to mark it on your schedule so we don't waste our time driving here.

If you have to eat one thing while you're there, do yourself a favor and order a bucket o'fries! This isn't your ordinary, run-of-the-mill fries. They must be coated in fairy dust and deep fried in unicorn tears--they're that good! If you want to splurge, get the bucket o'cheesey fries--trust me, you won't be disappointed. "What if I get two things?" You say? Well, that's a no brainer--get the foot long corn dog--yummy! We've been to a couple of this family's carnivals. Their staff seems great and friendly! Many of them will strike up a conversation with my husband or I while waiting for our kids, outside of rides. We have come to know the owners as we go so often, thus when you visit The Mighty Thomas Carnival you are supporting a local business. The rides are fun and small enough that my 4 year old still has multiple ride options. I know that people sometimes are discouraged by the cost of going to a carnival. When you look around and see the cost of operating such a business, the cost of admission is totally appropriate. My kids love it the most and I do have this amazing nostalgic feeling walking around the midway, especially at night. It is such an enjoyable experience!
