Escutcheon is located in a pseudo warehouse district of Winchester VA.  It was easy to find with GPS.  The challenge when I arrived was parking.  They have used some of their parking spaces for outside seating, which must be some kind of code, because it was fall here and about 30 something degrees. Not sure who would really be sitting out there.. Once inside,, the Brewery is spacious with enough seating both bar and tables for a good size group of beer dinners.  I sat at the bar and ordered a flight of all 10 beers they had on tap. All the beer at Escutcheon is drinkable, crushable and reasonably price for $6-7 a pint. And, the beer here is true to style.  No extra flavors, just good beer by the numbers. Brian was our beertender and he was great.  Thanks Brian, your sense of humor and knowledge of the beer as well as nautical terms made our night way better.  The brewers name is John and he brews clean flavors.  It is comforting when the beers taste like what they are. The BEER: Growler Kolsch 4.5% ABV... crisp and refreshing Fancy Clancy Pilsner 4.5% ABV... a light Pilsner for those Miller or Bud fans Maggie's Cream Ale 4.5% ABV... reminds me of Genesee Cream Ale, really drinkable Agonic Line Lager 5% ABV... I love this Lager, because it tastes like what it is Spica Hefeweizen 5.6% ABV... It's a not so typical hefe. Yummm... Bowditch American Pale Ale 5% ABV... APAs are not my palet, but this one was pretty good Plimsoll IPA 6.5% ABV... FIRE!!! This is delicious Slip Angle New England IPA 7% ABV... says its a NEIPA, but has the flavor profile of a west coast IPA Habermehels Oktoberfest lager 6.5 ABV... liked this One alot Annealed Coffee Stout 6.5% ABV... smells like coffee, tastes like coffee, give me some bacon and I've got breakfast For my first experience here, I was very impressed.  None of the ABVs were ridiculously high and the beers were true to their styles.  For me that was very comforting.  I am finding that here in Winchester, a night of beer drinking is Uber Affordable.  And Escutcheon is not the exception, but the rule.  If you want great beer at even greater affordability, Escutcheon is the place to visit.  I will be returning soon. read more

Wonderful selection of beers. I couldn't decide on one so the sampler platter was a must. I think I liked the Hefeweizen the best but each was unique and a good representation of the style. Flight. Good. Chips. Stopped in before dinner. It's a warehouse/industrial space in a very warehouse/industrial neighborhood. Clean on the outside and a new building. Inside, clean and space for getting some serious beer drinking done. Tables and comfy seats and a bar with televisions. Sorry, I can't remember if there was wifi or not. Beers were okay. I had a flight of five different ones for $7 and they were good. The Cherry Kriek was very light on cherry flavor. The Gose was sour and salty. Hefeweizen, Lager and Kolsch were a decent four stars but I thought that the taste was light. On this night, there were eight or so fresh beers on tap (plus the Kriek, bottled). They do not have a kitchen but do have Route 11 chips for sale. Chips and beer go well together and these are excellent chips. read more

Nice looking tap room and pretty good beers. This place is definitely a 'brewery', but is much more of a large sale commercial brewery than the 'micro pubs' I'm more accustomed to. The result is their beers were generally good, definitely drinkable, but nothing too crazy or experimental. If this is a good or bad thing all depends on your point of view. I had no idea Escutcheon was such a large operation. The back of the building had huuuuuuge brewing kettles, and cases upon cases of beers stacked & ready to go. Apparently they distribute a lot in the Baltimore area, although I'd never heard of them in the DC area. They seem to focus on German style beers. Of the 9 beers on tap... Blackstrike Stout: Like Guinness but lighter. Enjoyed it Kerlogue Red Ale: Pretty good, especially if you like red ales Algonic Line Lager: Not many lagers in breweries, but then again this was a big operation so I shouldn't be too surprised. Interesting finish, but otherwise just OK. Reluctant Spice Gose: Semi sour beer, which I liked but not as much as other sours. Pilsner: Very soft, almost tasteless Kolsh: Little Complex. But seriously, you can tell they put a lot of money into this operation and have people behind the wheel who seem to know what they are doing with the beer. Great folks behind the bar. Good beers. As a brewery, with French dips, burgers, and fish and chips, Escutcheon is sadly not. Most likely due to Virginia's antiquated liquor laws, Escutcheon doesn't serve food. But they do make excellent beers. Technically a "tasting room", they have a bar and tables and serve up reasonably priced pints of beer that would give Portland, OR breweries a run for their money. The odd thing about this establishment, is that they are perfectly okay with you bringing in outside food while you sip their ales. While watching Monday Night Football recently, on their big flat screen, I saw several groups ordering pizza, which was delivered right to the tasting room. VA and Winchester don't have a lot of places like this, so I think Escutcheon really fills a void. It's a cool place to meet friends after work with a really comfortable, inviting vibe. Now if we could just get them to stay open a little longer. read more

One of many great breweries in Winchester that you must swing by! Easy access with parking lot spaces available right next to the building. The tap room is welcoming and air conditioned. The brews, which were all great, I enjoyed were Reluctant Splice Gose, Agonic Line Lager, Kerlogue Red Ale, Double Hull IPA, Blackstrake Stout on Nitro. The gose was the best one I've had to date, great balance of sweetness. The stout on nitro, you can't go wrong with that, so smooth! The IPA wasn't too strong either, a great composure. We were visiting from Alabama and had been to a few other breweries in this town and this by far was the best. I like lighter beers but I had a flight with the Pilsner, kolsh, lager, and ipa and I loved them all. Their beer selection is so great. Lisa was our bartender and she was so fun and easy to talk to. I hesitate to tell people how awesome this place is, only because I dread battling the crowds that will be there when word gets out about Escutcheon! But I also want them to stick around, so I will happily tell everyone I know that they need to come here. As of right now, they have 3 amazing beers, and I hope they consider making some more because they obviously have it figured out. The beer is fantastic. Live music on Thursdays (or at least there was when I went) and the group was excellent. Everything about Escutcheon is super chill but also everyone excited to be there. My husband and I visited with two other couples. The guys each had a flight to sample all of the brews (four as of now) and then chose their favorites to have larger glasses. The tap room has a great ambiance, and we were able to tour the brewery. There was a food truck available outside, though we had dinner reservations later, so we didn't partake. There was also corn hole for anyone who wanted to toss a few games. The staff was very friendly and extremely knowledgeable, and we even met the head brewer. I'm sure we will make the 1+ hour trip out to Winchester again!! read more

The atmosphere at Escutcheon and the beers themselves were just okay. I think there are better places in town for microbrew, but it's worth checking out if you want something new! Flight was definitely a bargain even though we weren't floored by any of the beers. read more

Excellent staff. The bartenders are young but they are passionate about beer, knowledgeable about what is on tap, and make an effort to have a conversation with you (without ignoring other customers). The high ceiling in the tasting room carries acoustics almost too well. It can get fairly loud when they are busy. The tasting room could use some sound absorbing material on the ceiling to make it sound less like a cafeteria. If I could give 4.5 stars, I would. The beer has potential, but it isn't 100% yet. The malts are great. The Kolsch is true to the style and my favorite so far - perfect for a hot summer afternoon. The Plimsoll IPA tastes incredibly fresh, but isn't hoppy enough for my palate. Since this brewery just opened, they are releasing their 4 "staple" beers before other more experimental beers. I understand that. However, I have tasted 3 staple beers - plus a mediocre "seasonal IPA" that they offered me when they were out of Plimsoll IPA - and all of them have been hopped conservatively. Some people in Winchester's craft beer scene prefer IPAs with a dominant hop flavor rather than a brown biscuity malt flavor. Lastly, I do not consider their growler special a great price. It may be a good price compared to bars in Old Town Winchester but it is expensive for a brewery. I've been to other breweries in Virginia that offer $10 growler fills all day (not just during happy hour). read more

Cool spot, interested to see more of their upcoming brews. The current line up of the kolsch, IPA, and pale ale are solid but the IPA is more like an amber. Kolsch is spot on for style but not one of those styles that makes you excited to go back. John the brewer is a really cool guy, more than willing to talk you through the process and answer any questions. read more

I was a bit apprehensive about the new brewery opening up, worried that well, it just wouldnt be very good. Thankfully, my fears were unfounded. Only 3 beers at this point, but 2 of which are good, and one which is great. The brewer knows his stuff and Im really looking forward to them putting out more beers and wider varieties. Great spot, friendly staff. My husband and I enjoyed almost all of the beers they had to offer. I was not thrilled with the IPA, it wasn't "hoppy" enough for my taste. Another reviewer pointed out it is "more like an amber," which I agree with. Left with one growler of the Kolsch and one of the APA. read more
