It's the kind of place where you say, "Let's just have one glass," and suddenly you're a couple hours deep, attached to a charcuterie board, and contemplating a life pivot to "Lets quit our jobs and start a winery." The wine is solid - it's approachable and not boring. There's something for everyone, including sweet whites, rose', and dry reds. 25 years has led to the family and wine makers perfecting their craft and they make solid VA wines. Now here's where it gets fun: there's another winery on the same property - in the same building! BONUS! Bogati winery also serves food, so feel free to wander between the two... This quaint, little winery is out in the beautiful, Virginian hills in Berryville. My family and I were served a delicious tasting of 7 wines that had such unique names from the 'Red Rooster' to the 'Pink Chicken.' The outside is so beautiful and luckily there were umbrellas on this hot summer to day to help shade from the sun. My choice was a bottle of the Rosé that made such a nice view even more satisfying with this honeysuckled pink wine. Did I mention the view? The staff was very helpful in deceiving each of the wines and I appreciated their smiles and good service upon making our bottle choices. It was a very nice afternoon. read more

They advertised an event as rain and shine, but then cancelled the event due to thunderstorms and refused to offer refunds. When I contacted management multiple times to get a refund as I could not make the date of the rescheduled event, they did not respond, despite me leaving my contact info and calling back multiple times. I was lucky enough to receive a refund via my credit card dispute, but based on my experience and the unscrupulous business practices displayed by management, I will never support this vineyard with my business. read more

We had a horrible experience when visiting Veramar vineyard. There were a ton of people onsite and definitely no staff onsite to provide the quality of service needed to accommodate all visitors. We gave Veramar a chance after being warned that the wine was not too appealing but sometimes you need to figure things out for yourself. When it comes to wine it is mostly up to the individuals taste. Saving you some time I will cut to the point. The wine was not good but it also was hot outside and by the time it could be enjoyed it was close to boiling. Why did it take so long to taste you ask? Cut to the kitchen order that was put in. Once again long story short it appeared that there was 1 staff member making all of the food. He missed patrons orders and made others orders incorrectly. The pickup line was ridiculously long and full of hangry people. Once we were able to find a table I watched our chairs (holding our flights outdoors in direct sunlight) while my other half wasted time and money ordering food and waiting inside approximately 30 minutes for food that never came. Me, being extremely patient waited 15-20 minutes before she came out and stated I might as well try the wine without her and she went back inside. Upon tasting the flight I was pretty grossed out and less than happy with finishing any of the wines. She returned 15 or 20 minutes later -empty handed-, aggravated and ready to leave. I agreed to her request and we wasted time, money and gas. Yes I can see how this review should reflect a 1 star but I gave 2 due to the initial Veramar employee that set us up with the tastings. She was courteous and willing to help. I don't foresee a revisit. read more

I visited Veramar Vineyard a few weeks ago with one of my best friends. It's a pretty small winery compared to others I've been to. They have plenty of parking including overflow parking. It wasn't very crowded when we went. When we walked in, we only had to wait a few minutes for them to wrap up with other customers, before being helped at the bar. They allowed us to sample a couple of wines before deciding on a bottle and we ultimately chose their seyval blanc. They also provide an ice bucket if you buy a bottle to enjoy on property. There is plenty of space to spread out and enjoy the views. We sat in the grass on Adirondack chairs. There were some bugs/gnats flying around but it's expected for being in the grass. Overall, we enjoyed our experience here! read more

I saw a few vineyards have reopened, so after hiking raven rocks decided to check this one out. I saw on their website they recommended bringing your own blanket/chairs to sit on. In a time of social distancing, I think we are all trying to be cautious. I was a little disappointed that the vineyard's patio had so many tables that were close together, and aside from the staff almost no one was wearing masks. But, if you brought your own blanket it was easy to make a picnic and just wear your mask to buy wine. Gorgeous views and a great way to spend a sunny day (the rose we tried was pretty good, and the live music was a treat) but would appreciate seeing the tables spaced out more on the patio to ensure proper social distancing with large crowds!! read more

This was my first tasting experience. I've had glasses of different wines in the past but never really enjoyed the experience. Mostly I am trying something that another may find satisfying while I am choking it down trying to be polite. Here however.... Kaitlyn was fan'effing'tastic!! She described in great detail the differences in how wines should be served, how they are blended, the differences in pallet responses; (being able to enjoy the taste versus looking for the most abrasive side of a wall to drank your tongue over) aaaaaand why some make you smack your lips versus a 'smooth going down' drinking experience. For this 'whiner' I am slowly turning into a wine-O kinda guy. If you're not a wine drinker then allow me to recommend you coming here for a nice quiet, pleasant and enjoyable experience! Road leading to the winery is generally Corvette friendly, last quarter mile dirt. Upon arrival they are dog friendly. The scenery is very nice as you'll see in my pictures. My Great Dane Chloe and I relaxed for a few hours. They have two different tastings one for members and one for guests. Upon recommendation I ordered Cab Franc. I usually only have one glass, but it was so good I had another. I also ordered pizza, the pizza was good. The guest wines are three whites and one red. I met the owner and the granddaughter both very nice and loved my dog. They also own Bogati and James Charles. Bogati is Argentina style, Veramar is Italian style and James Charles is French style. Nice little place, even if a bit far from the rest! Verimar has about 28 acres under vine (although not all growing yet), making most of their wines estate grown. Definite plus for me. I also like that it's a family business - they also run Bogati Bodega and James Charles. So if you like the wines at one, you'll likely enjoy the others. The grounds have a very Spanish-style look to them, but the interior had a very German log-cabin feel to it. Interesting blend, but I liked it. My server Tom recognized me from a previous visit to James Charles; you know you're drinking waaaaay to much when you can walk in a completely new place and people recognize you from elsewhere. Fortunately Tom was also really friendly and knowledgeable about all three places, and I ended up with a coupon for James Charles (hospitality - check). The whites were OK for me; but not being a white drinker that could almost be a compliment. The 2013 Chardonnay was more oaky than buttery, and the 2013 Seyval Blanc had a sweet nose but a dry finish. I also liked the Riesling/Vidal blend though; then again, Riesling is my favorite white so it's hard for me not to like it. The "Pink Chicken" rose had a nice color but didn't do anything for me. For the reds, the biggest surprise was the recently opened 2014 Cab Franc. Normally I'd be skeptical about such a young wine, but it turned out to be really good; little jammy but not harsh at all. Maybe this is a good indication for the future of other 2014s? That was unlike their Cab Sav, which I didn't like nearly as much. Actually my biggest surprise was the D'Ora desert wine. Normally desert wines are too sweet for me, but I could go for that one again; my favorite of the line-up. read more

Holy WOW. Maybe it's because I've been living in downtown RVA for too long and the city life is really getting to me, but I felt like I was in nature heaven at Veramar Vineyard! The picturesque rolling hills, the pond, the fountain, the cozy vibes inside...I was just in awe! Not to mention, this was a birthday treat for me, so after our tasting we had a pre planned and packaged picnic that was totally vegan! Imagine my delight, being in no man's land/ BBQ country and I have a vegan lunch all to myself complete with the BEST veggie wrap I have ever tried, a salad AND vegan...chocolate...bar. I just about died. I think the best part was knowing that this meal package was definitely not the norm, but the team over at Veramar had very carefully and expertly curated a gorgeous and delish plant based meal for us. It was stunning. I had the absolute best time and it was so beautiful. Definitely recommend- the wine is not my taste or style, but the views and accommodations alone are enough to go back again and again. read more

We were so pleasantly surprised by the view when we walked around from the parking lot and the expansive lawn, we immediately said ooo, this place would be so nice in the spring or summer. The place itself was nice, the grounds and the tasting room were above average for a winery around here I thought. The woman working the tasting room was also great, the wine though was just average. There's not a chance in hell that I would return. I bought tickets for the "adult" easter egg hunt. I put adult in quotes because there were an awful lot of kids there. This was supposed to be an event with a limited attendance (COVID compliant). But there were about 300-500 people let loose to run around a smallish field with eggs thrown all around (at $20 a pop that's quite a haul). And of course half of the crowd refused to wear masks or keep any sort safe distance from each other. Just 2 months out of a knee replacement I knew I wouldn't be able to compete with the mob so I sent my hubby off to enjoy the event without me slowing him down. BIG MISTAKE - I'd managed to gather a small amount of eggs when someone actually pushed me down from behind AND STOLE MY EGGS!!! By the time I was able to get up they were long gone and so was my bag. By the way I wasn't the only one - several people complained of being shoved or pushed down. In the end the entire event lasted 10 minutes. Aside from the egg hunt the vineyard itself is unremarkable. I can't review the wine because the facility was so overbooked that the lines to get tastings or bottles or anything else packed (again NO social distancing). And even if we had picked up a goodie or two there was very little seating available and impossible to find in the crowd. With are so many quality vineyards that have great wines and atmospheres available this one is a big pass. read more

We have visited nearly every winery (multiple times) in Loudoun, Fauquier, PW, Stafford, Shenandoah, Clarke, Warren... nearly all in Northern VA... But had not visited this one yet, but after driving by it many times, we finally stopped in. We liked the venue, really pretty! The tasting room was pretty and quaint and the property was really nice! We liked the seating down near the pond and the patio area too. The staff was very friendly and nice. (Oddly enough, we chatted with folks also visiting here on this trip who had been to James Charles and liked it and Bogaty Bodega and disliked it - for the same reasons as us, they didn't appreciate the stuffy staff at Bogaty and how they were treated - We've reviewed them a coupe years ago - bad experienced... But I digress...) We found a few wines we liked so we bought a bottle and also a charcuterie to sit and eat/drink while enjoying the beautiful weather outside on the patio. The only reason I'm giving a 3 instead of 4 (because the property and service was worthy of a 4) was because while trying to enjoy the beauty and silence while enjoying the nice wines outside, we had to listen to some drunk, older ladies who kept standing up saying it was their birthday. Clearly no one cared, that's why no one sai happy birthday to them and the reason that no one cared was they were extremely annoying to everyone else around them. We were fortunate to be able to move out into the field, near the pond to escape this drunk behavior, but we were saddened that the staff didn't take care of this problem instead. We would recommend a visit to this winery if you're in the area, it's definitely worth the visit! read more

Absolutely beautiful view of the rolling hills here. I can see why so many people choose this vineyard as a wedding venue. The staff has been extremely pleasant both times we have been. I have been once during the week and once on a weekend now and although I enjoyed myself this last time, there is a drastic difference in atmosphere between the two. This weekend we were carded and asked to pay for the tasting up front. I guess there is a new system in place that the staff is getting used to and it took forever to get four of us wrung up. This new system doesn't sit well with me. If we want to buy wine (which of course we did) or food (same) then you have to have another transaction later on. It seems like a waste of time for them to ring me up twice, especially since they were short staffed this weekend, and although it's not the end of the world it was kind of annoying. That being said, I think their wine is very good. The Mourvedre, Pink Chicken and Seyval Blanc are very easy to drink and bode well to sipping and sitting outside. Next time though I will remember to buy a bottle of one with my tasting and bring my own food. Tip: They will give you a $5 tasting coupon for Bogati Bodega (down the street) if you ask for it. read more

After taking part in wine tastings for over 7 years, I finally made it to Veramar - and I wasn't disappointed. If it is offered, spring for the reserve tasting. We were greeted by Della Bogaty - she was very nice and chatted with us until Jim arrived for our tasting. We had our tasting with Jim Bogaty, one of the owners. If nothing else, he is a fantastic story teller. One thing to note about the reserve tasting - it varies weekly based on availability and what has won certain awards. I also did the regular tasting. I am a white wine drinker, and Veramar makes my kind of whites. I ended up buying the Pink Chicken (rose) and the D'Ora (sweet wine - technically not a dessert wine). I also bought a bottle of the Rooster Red - which is used (and tasted) in a mulled wine. It was delicious. One final thing that I really enjoyed about Veramar - their staff knew what they were talking about. The girl who did the second tasting (Danielle) was happy to answer questions, discuss wine, and joke around. read more

Some friends got married at Veramar, so this review is based on the wedding and reception. The ceremony itself was set up down the hill from the main tasting room, near the pond. With the sun setting, and the mountain in the background, it was a beautiful setting for a wedding. Cocktail hour was a cute gazebo over to the side of the tasting room and right on the edge of the vines. There was enough room for a bar and a small table of food, but most of the milling around was in the grass around the gazebo. It was here that we got the first taste of the wine. I tried the Riesling first, and really enjoyed it. But when the boyfriend got a glass of the Chardonnay, that's where the real love happened. He knows his wines, and at the first sip of the Chard, he said it was the best he had ever tasted. We proceeded to drink mostly that throughout the evening, and left with a case of it. The reception was held on the patio area, which was covered with a walled tent. The setting was fantastic, the food was excellent, and the wine was flowing. The staff was fairly unintrusive throughout, and the MC/DJ was quite good with the expected stuff - toasts, bouquet/garter, cake cutting, first dances, etc. All in all, the Veramar crowd put on a nice wedding. I know the bride and groom were happy, and we were as well; as I said, we left with a case of the Chardonnay, and are looking forward to going back and doing the full tour and tasting of this and other wineries in the area. read more

Veramar is probably my favorite winery in Virginia so far - although this may change as I discover more. As the final stop of a three-winery tour on Saturday, they offered a long list of wines for tasting. I loved their chardonnay and riesling. The chardonnay is smooth, well-rounded, with lovely notes of vanilla and oak, and an intriguing aftertaste in your mouth. The riesling also provides a bold range of fruit notes and the medium- to full-bodied texture is excellent. The seyval didn't appeal to me much. It's not bad, but just too common and I feel I've had too many wines with the same taste in my short and inexperienced repertoire. The vineyard is big, with breathtaking view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. They also have chairs and a swing outside. We walked around and relaxed in the swing while overlooking a small pond. There's also a small fountain on the outdoor patio. Like many other wineries, Veramar hosts weddings, but it also provides lodging. I asked about a cellar tour since I'm interested in seeing how wine is actually made. They require a 10-person-minimum group tour reservation. read more

This family run vineyard wraps its arms around you as soon as you step out of the car. As you walk up to the tasting area you may pass a sweet dog, a running child, or a couple laughing. It is welcoming to everyone. The view is breathtaking, so make sure you go out on a beautiful day. The wines are amazing. They have one of the best reds I have ever had (I am partial to dessert & white wines) . I brought a friend here, who was visiting from Boston. Neither of us wanted to leave. Definitely a "meh" establishment. Fortunately it was first stop on a fall day of wine tasting. None of their varietals stood out to me, although we didn't get the "library" tasting (higher class pours). The reds described as "earthy" had no depth or body and really did, um, taste like dirt. Too bad. I would certainly have opted for the library tasting had the menu shown the norton was no longer available on the standard tasting flight. Perhaps I'll come back and try the more exclusive tasting. The scenery at the foot of Bear's Den is enough to warrant another trip. read more

Big Disappointment. We thought this would be a nice winery to visit that wouldn't require our usual long car ride to Charlottesville. The drive was beautiful, and about 1.5 hours from DC proper. However, the service here couldn't have been worse. You enter from the parking lot into a gorgeous courtyard, which presents a dramatic entrance to this winery. Then you enter the 'wine tasting/purchasing area'-- we were confused immediately. There was no one at the door to greet us or direct us as to where we should begin our tasting or if there was a wait. My partner finally just went up to the crowded wine bar, and an unmannerly clerk stated we could only conduct our tasting in a confined area because of several tours she was expecting. Veramar definitely caters to their tours. Not cool. The tasting was serviced by yet another incredibly rude woman. It was almost as if she was acting like this wasn't her job, and we were bothering her. I actually enjoyed 80% of the wine, yet I did not want to give Veramar anymore money or service from us. I wanted to get out! Thankfully, a nice lunch in the small town of Berryville saved the day. read more

Horrible Service. Quality wine, but weak in flavors. Tacky payment for tasting before being served. Been to dozens of VA wineries over the past year and haven't had as horrible server/service as yesterday around 3pm. Could not do more than 1 thing at a time even with 6 people waiting for a tasting. Slow as molasses. Made us pay for the tasting before doing anything and it took 5 minutes for her to charge 3 couples tastings before she even began. TACKY. Very few other places charge before the tasting. Makes it annoying to buy a glass or bottle after the tasting instead of charging it all @ the end. I, and 3 other random couples, were 30 seconds away from leaving before the tasting even began b/c of how slow she was. When we arrived there was only 1 other couple waiting for her help....and they were CLUB members just trying to buy a bottle. They rolled their eyes as they waited 7 minutes to get attention. Unacceptable. Wine is clearly made by competent vintners as there are no off-flavors, the acidity is in check, and the right flavors for the grape are present, but it's like the volume of the flavors is muted. I don;t need wines to be turned up to 11, but these felt like a 5 on the amplifier knob. Their so called"Big Daddy", either the Rooster Red or the Cab-Franc is a wimp. If are going to call nickname a wine "Big Daddy, it's gonna have to be a Norton or Chambourcin in the Virginia grape region. I know this winery has been open for some time, and has a sister winery just down Route 7, but if they hope to keep their customers happy, they might want to replace the Seasoned Citizen worker who was running the counter on Saturday 5/17/14. read more
