Nestled on the top of a hill overlooking the grape hedgerows, Star in the Valley's tasting room is the perfect place to kick back and enjoy a glass or 2. Ample seating for all group sizes, we came on a Saturday afternoon and had no problem grabbing a table. Service: 5/5. The staff operating the tasting room we're great! Very helpful in offering recommendations and giving us a brief background story of the vineyard. Wine: 5/5. I have always held mixed feelings for Virginia wine, however Star in the Valley's offerings were decent. We opted to do 2 wine flights which allowed us to try their entire wine portfolio. The brie cake was delicious--even for someone who doesn't usually like goat cheese (it was layered in)--but unfortunately, no one in our group enjoyed the cheesecake. The winery is both dog- and kid-friendly. All the parents we encountered kept their children supervised, which is a winery rule and one I really appreciate now that we have kids ourselves. Most of the dogs were also very well behaved, though one was repeatedly growling at passing dogs, which was off-putting. While the winery can't control every patron, we choose to leave our dog at home when she's not in a social mood, and it would be nice if all dog owners did the same.

We chose Barrel Oak Winery to celebrate my 50th birthday because of the positive experiences we'd had there before. We traveled across the country to gather family and friends, trusting the venue to host a fun and relaxed evening. Unfortunately, on a 105-degree July day with intense humidity, the Overlook event space had no functioning air conditioning. While no one can control the weather, the conditions inside the venue--and the response to them--were the responsibility of the venue. The staff on site were gracious and did what they could, and we made the best of the evening under the circumstances. But after nearly three hours in extreme heat--and after nearly half our guests had already left--we were ready to call the evening a loss, when we were moved into the Tasting Room. By then, the celebration we had planned had already been materially compromised. What was most disappointing, however, was the lack of proactive management of the situation or thoughtful response afterward. Rather than acknowledging the significance of what occurred, I was left with the impression that it was viewed as an inconvenience rather than the significant disruption it was. If you're considering Barrel Oak for a wedding, milestone celebration, or any event you wish to enjoy, I hope you'll ask the questions we thought were too basic to ask. And if something isn't right, don't be afraid to insist on a solution in real time. We trusted the venue to do that for us, and by the time it happened, it was too late.

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed every wine tasting experience, especially the Triple Threat with cheese and chocolate, and have gained an incredible amount of knowledge on wine, charcuterie building and combining with various foods! Didn't know grapes actually do not go with wine! Our suite was lovely and so comfortable it was difficult to leave, especially with serene views of the mountains! The variety of wine is countrywide, many from female winemakers, from locals and made at Little Washington Winery. We bought a case with a variety, including their Meritage Masterpiece "George". The weekend getaway had plenty of wine tastings in a very welcoming home with plenty of areas to kick up the feet and relax. Carl's dinner recommendation to The Blue Door was also appreciated as we enjoyed the romantic outdoor dinner with beautiful flavorful entrees (especially the lamb chop!) and desserts! They have a little carport area outside to sit but it has no ac. The beer was average to below average, we just ordered one beer and a flight. We were sitting right in front of the kitchen which appeared to be run by a microwave, so that's never a good sign. I think this would have been a better experience if their barn didn't have a private even going.
