We stopped by just on chance driving toward DC. Super nice folks. Did their tasting--but only the reds (that's all I like). Good reds and I liked the Cab Franc the best. The various areas to sit are nice and create a great wine experience.

Still a great winery! Visited again right before New Year's and the employees are still so friendly and welcoming. Bought their amazing dessert wine for later and viewed their Christmas cork designs. Apparently they do a new design each year and if guess how many you win a prize. I'm definitely doing that for 2023.

Vineyard, Wine Production, Cellar, and Tasting Room Entertaining tour of a 14 acre vineyard, making 12 different types of wine. Easy to find. Well organized nice people. Good experience. Wines were mildly sweat with an amazing dessert wine. Good descriptions and tour organization. Short drive from DC.

We've been to Gray Ghost a few times and have always enjoyed our visit. Today's post Warrenton lunch, day date with my husband is no exception. Staff was friendly, accommodating and knowledgeable. The tasting room is setup for 3 tastings at a time while maintaining separation between groups. After a tasting (at a very reasonable, it not cheap $5/person fee) there is space indoors or outdoors to sit. We sat outside, next to the vines where they have added more tables, chairs, and tens for shade since our last visit. Don't forget a ToGo case...

A delayed review for a wonderful October visit. Small-to-medium sized by VA standards; their 4000 cases/year, 100% estate wines are from the 13 acres of vines you see as you drive by. Amazingly enough, the tasting is only $5 for 9 wines. Grey Ghost easily gets 4 stars; maybe 5 stars when the summer hits and they have a more red-heavy lineup. For those who don't know about the name, the winery is named after Colonel John Mosby, the Confederate leader of "Mosby Raiders" who's cavalry raids (aided by an exceptional spy network) gave Union garrisons in northern VA fits the entire Civil War. Drive around Loudoun County and you'll see historic markers denoting his exploits all over the place. I was extremely lucky to meet Al Kellert, one of the owners and wine-maker. Al was very humble about his success; he was a believer in Virginia wine before it was popular, and the fact Grey Ghost has been around since 1993 (!) is a tribute to his wine. What I tried: Whites: 2014 Chardonnay; made in oak although you could have fooled me (was decent). 2013 Reserve Chardonnay; just a little buttery (liked it); Victorian White Chardonnay; light but not my style. The 2014 Vidal had a strong nose but melon palate. The 2014 Gewürztraminer was OK, but I'm not a huge fan of this grape. Reds: The 2013 Ranger Reserve Bordeaux blend had strong dark chocolate palate; very nice and my favorite. The 2013 Cab Sav was just ok. Desert styles/Rose: 2014 Adieu late harvest Vidal was decent but too sweet for me. The Victorian Red Rose did nothing for me (as with many Roses). Grey Ghost has one of the cozier tasting rooms in the area. I love the upstairs sitting area, which makes me feel like I'm drinking in someone's fancy living room. But the patio is also really nice, and the vines are right there!

Stopped at Gray Ghost after my visit to Rappahannock - tasted a total of 8 wines - all were very nice - again, I could have bought a lot of wine but with no place to put it. I restrained myself and bought only two bottles of wine - a bottle of the Victorian Red and a bottle of the 2007 Adieu - both are sweet wines, but the Adieu is a dessert wine. I will be come back here again!

They have a great Reserve Chardonnay here. If you have the VA Wine Pass you get get two free tastings here also, so that was nice. The grounds here are nice and I am sure full of history. We didn't get to hear too much about it though because we arrived at the same time everyone else in town seemed too. It was clearly not their fault though. I stayed after the tasting and sat outside on the upper deck overlooking the lawn/vineyards. While the view was nice you could hear the highway still and see some powerlines, so it was not a complete retreat. Overall good wine and worth the visit at least once, more if you are closer.

We are regulars at gray ghost. The owners, their daughter and staff are friendly and knowledgeable. The wines are fabulous. one of only a few places where I enjoy the reds and whites. their Christmas display is one of a kind and if you have kids their santa is fabulous.

Off the beaten track and up on hilltop with beautiful views, this winery is AMAZING! Tastings are table side with knowledge staff guiding you. The review does not reflect the fact I did not get to try their wine, but rather the way I was treated when I attempted to plan a trip to visit the "right" way** We were driving past this spot on a nice Sunday, coming home from a family lunch, and thought why not stop in? I did not have a reservation because (as mentioned above) I wasn't aware of needing one and I wasnt sure when I would be able to stop in as I was just passing by (we live 1+ hour away). As we pulled into the long dirt road, the front gates have no clear sign that says 'By Appointment Only' - perhaps a good add before your clients drive up a steep unpaved road to just be turned away. None of the vines appeared to be in use so the drive up may be more beautiful one day when the grapes are on the vines. The parking lot is a bit cramped and full of fancy cars, giving us a taste of the type of clientele that would be inside. We came in and I inquired if I could do a wine tasting. The staff member told us we needed a reservation but that he would do his best to try to see if they had space - totally fine. My mistake again- I did not realize that this winery required reservations (no other winery I have been to in Charlottesville, Middleburg, or NOVA has done so) so my first assumption wasn't that I needed a reservation. Again, no sign at the front that says this and would have saved me time. The space was obviously gorgeous, the views spectacular and it felt very Napa and upscale. The staff member returned back and told us they couldn't accommodate us- ok, disappointing but ultimately is what it is. I asked the two staff members standing there how early they recommend making reservations, as we dont live in the area so I need to plan ahead. They told me it was hard to tell but that basically any time it's warm, it will be hard to get a reservation and that "Saturday visits are a pipe dream" and Sundays are "pretty impossible too". They then kindly told me "you could try to snag a reservation maybe a Thursday or Friday". Mind you, their hours are 12-5 on Thursday/Friday...I live an hour plus away, let alone with traffic. I guess my only options are to take off work to come visit as it seems there will be no chance for me to ever get a reservation for 2 on the weekends.... Needless to say, it felt like the staff really could care less for our future business and we politely left. The staff did not offer to help us book a future reservation or anything of that nature - just a snooty response that I probably shouldn't bother every attempting to return on a weekend. Hilarious enough, I decided to look up their website and low and behold - they had tasting reservations that same day at 3 PM (45 minutes after we first asked about a tasting) - no offer to us to wait or come back to return, just basically turned away. Cherry on top- they have tons of reservations open for future Saturdays and Sunday. If you don't want my business, you dont have to tell me twice. If I want to deal with pretentious folks, I'll fly to Napa and drink wine actually grown onsite.

From the moment we arrived, I was completely blown away. As we parked and walked toward the field--with gazebos and a dock with seating--I immediately noticed how kid-friendly the vineyard is. The playground setup was incredibly creative and perfect for sparking a child's imagination. I honestly wish I had known ahead of time because I would have brought my little one! The property itself is beautiful and very well maintained. There were horses roaming around, which added such a peaceful charm. As we explored, I kept noticing thoughtful and unique touches everywhere--from a stunning wine tree to large decorative clay pots, and even buildings designed to resemble a Greek town that house classic cars. It all made the experience feel extra special. There was a wedding taking place, so part of the property was closed off, but it was easy to see how perfect this venue would be for an intimate "I do." Inside the main building, they offered a great selection of food, an impressive wine list available by the glass, bottle, or flight, and hands down the best wine slush I've ever had. My only critique is that it seemed like the AC wasn't working inside, and I really felt for the bartenders who were working so hard as it got busier throughout the day. Overall, I absolutely loved this place. It's one of the few spots that truly caters to both adults and children, and I'll definitely be back.

The parts of the winery I did see were beautiful. The house served as a Civil War hospital, then a home and now winery since 2006. The Cabernet Franc Reserve was a casual wine that we were told would be great with pizza and Netflix! The coppery Cabernet Sauvignon was peppery and slightly dry which we liked!
