    Wine flight

We stopped at this winery which is located in a very secluded area. If you're feeling lost, just keep going. The venue is really cozy and the staff was very informative and friendly. They had a smoldering fire going outside which added to the woodsy outdoors atmosphere. The owner is a pottery artist and sells her artwork inside as well. The wine was average. They had a Chardonnay that I loved and then had some ancient wine that was pretty bad. Overall cool place.

We had a lovely mid afternoon picnic here today. We've been to a lot of the wineries in Northern Virginia and this is one of the most scenic. The plentiful outdoor tables look out into the hilly vineyard, which were picture perfect at peak foliage. The vines are young and the wines we tasted (gruner veltliner, rose, and petit syrah) were not as smooth as we normally like, but service was super friendly and knowledgeable. I like that you can bring your own food since they only have a few appetizer type offerings. At $36 for a bottle of white, the prices are a tad high, but I like that they are natural wines (no added yeast) and follow mostly organic practices. Also dog friendly so we will be back to try the 2023 vintage in 2025 (if not sooner!)

We love Arterra and have a membership there. It's a unique offbeat experience. The property is mostly wooded with the tasting room in an A frame near the top of a hill. There are nice outdoor seating options near the vines and indoor seating with table service. The tasting room is also the Hawkmoth Arts Studio and Gallery with mostly wine themed art. Beautiful work and we own a couple of pieces. Jason the winemaker harvests the fruit without residual pesticides and uses native yeasts and neutral oak. He calls it clean wine. The taste is more complex and natural as a result. We are big fans of his Petit Verdot, Tannat, and Cab Franc. They have some food. Cheese and crackers types of options. Service has always been excellent. If you want a mellow outdoorsy experience for couples or small groups this is a great choice.

My husband and I visited on the Sunday before Memorial Day and were pleased to find the winery not crowded with ample outdoor and indoor seating. We were going for a relaxed vibe and sitting outside amongst tall trees with a beautiful view of the vineyard was perfect! Definitely off the beaten path. We split 2 flights of 5 wines. Both of us agreed the Albariño was our favorite. I also really enjoyed the Chenin Blanc and my husband enjoyed the Classic Chardonnay and red blend (Crooked Run). The tasting menu was interesting; we recently tried some wines aged in amphorae while on vacation in Spain and were excited to see this method used in VA! Employees were friendly/relatable and we learned that there are events on Friday nights in the summer that are kid friendly. We also took a little walk on a path that led to a beautiful view of the vineyard. We enjoyed browsing the art inside and would like to return for one of the art classes (pottery with a glass of wine!).

I have been here twice now that I can remember and absolutely LOVED it. Kelly has helped me both times and has been very friendly to talk to and knowledgeable on the wines. It's rare for me to find a winery where I enjoy every single wine that's offered. As I get older and learn more about what really goes into everything we eat and drink, I really do appreciate that there are more natural ("clean" if you will) options to enjoy out there. I know the minimum sulfites and native yeast fermented wines are not for everyone's taste buds, but I and my mom have enjoyed them a lot! My favorite Arterra wine so far is their 2019 Late Harvest Tannat...I loooove a good port so this port-style wine (it's not fortified so not technically a port I guess, but better than some real ports I've had) was just right up my alley! I recommend this place to just about everyone who is interested in trying a unique winery in Virginia. I hope to be able to purchase some of the beautiful handmade art they have in their tasting room the next time I visit. Honestly, I would become a club member if I thought I'd be able to make it out there more when I'm off, but right now I tend to be working most days that they're open. At least they offer an industry discount, so I have more money to tip the wonderful staff!! 10/10 would recommend!

We may have gotten 2 tasting flights to get them all......

I was surprised how much I like the wine here. Normally, I admit when I hear any kind of alternative winemaking outside of traditional (no preservatives. No sulfites, etc.) I wonder if the taste is going to suffer. But, this made for an awesome chill day date out and the winery itself is very charming. At first we did joke we didn't want to end up in a "cabin the woods" movie but don't let it fool you. It's a quaint woodsy winery and the wine is awesome. We may have walked out with 7 bottles......I'm a red drinker but I fell in love with the blueberry apple, and did get some late harvest tannat and I'm very pumped to drink them. The fruit wine was sweet but in a nice way, not syrupy at all. I'll definitely be back and maybe explore some of the owners art that is for sale. Give it a try and you won't be disappointed. Also, top notch service and no reservations required.

Came here for a wine tasting during COVID. The winery does have their tables socially distanced and require masks. I enjoyed this winery's tasting because they didn't have pre-set flights. You could select any five wines from their menu to taste. They also have a flag system where you put up a little flag on your table to signal your server that you need help, which was very convenient when the winery started to get full. The wines were also very tasty. Overall a great experience!

The review does not reflect the fact I did not get to try their wine, but rather the way I was treated when I attempted to plan a trip to visit the "right" way** We were driving past this spot on a nice Sunday, coming home from a family lunch, and thought why not stop in? I did not have a reservation because (as mentioned above) I wasn't aware of needing one and I wasnt sure when I would be able to stop in as I was just passing by (we live 1+ hour away). As we pulled into the long dirt road, the front gates have no clear sign that says 'By Appointment Only' - perhaps a good add before your clients drive up a steep unpaved road to just be turned away. None of the vines appeared to be in use so the drive up may be more beautiful one day when the grapes are on the vines. The parking lot is a bit cramped and full of fancy cars, giving us a taste of the type of clientele that would be inside. We came in and I inquired if I could do a wine tasting. The staff member told us we needed a reservation but that he would do his best to try to see if they had space - totally fine. My mistake again- I did not realize that this winery required reservations (no other winery I have been to in Charlottesville, Middleburg, or NOVA has done so) so my first assumption wasn't that I needed a reservation. Again, no sign at the front that says this and would have saved me time. The space was obviously gorgeous, the views spectacular and it felt very Napa and upscale. The staff member returned back and told us they couldn't accommodate us- ok, disappointing but ultimately is what it is. I asked the two staff members standing there how early they recommend making reservations, as we dont live in the area so I need to plan ahead. They told me it was hard to tell but that basically any time it's warm, it will be hard to get a reservation and that "Saturday visits are a pipe dream" and Sundays are "pretty impossible too". They then kindly told me "you could try to snag a reservation maybe a Thursday or Friday". Mind you, their hours are 12-5 on Thursday/Friday...I live an hour plus away, let alone with traffic. I guess my only options are to take off work to come visit as it seems there will be no chance for me to ever get a reservation for 2 on the weekends.... Needless to say, it felt like the staff really could care less for our future business and we politely left. The staff did not offer to help us book a future reservation or anything of that nature - just a snooty response that I probably shouldn't bother every attempting to return on a weekend. Hilarious enough, I decided to look up their website and low and behold - they had tasting reservations that same day at 3 PM (45 minutes after we first asked about a tasting) - no offer to us to wait or come back to return, just basically turned away. Cherry on top- they have tons of reservations open for future Saturdays and Sunday. If you don't want my business, you dont have to tell me twice. If I want to deal with pretentious folks, I'll fly to Napa and drink wine actually grown onsite.

Once I found out Delaplane Cellars was Black-Owned, it was a no-brainer. This winery is impeccable! The views of the vineyards, fields, mountains, and the cellar itself as you drive up are breathtaking. Making a reservation was a breeze, as was the check-in process. As I was waiting for my college friend and her husband to arrive, I was able to taste a couple of reds before I went outside to our table. The live music inside added a nice touch to the venue, and the inside has such an elegant look and feel, with comfortable seating and windows to take in the sights. There are multiple levels where you can sit outside, and we were on the top. Again, breathtaking views of the fields. The first wine I tried was the Adjacency. One of the smoothest wines I've ever had. The same could be said about the Rusticity. Both hit just the right notes with each sip. When my friends arrived, we caught up and put in food orders and a bottle of the Adjacency. We ordered the Virginia Sampler charcuterie board, fresh-baked baguettes, and the pepperoni flatbread. All of which hit the mark for our hunger and pairing with the wines. The Cabernet Franc was uniquely tasty, with a subtle bite to it. The rest of our time, we ordered a bottle of the Viognier and Rose. One huge plus and takeaway is that none of the wines we tried were overly sweet, even the Viognier with its white peach, melon, and jasmine flavors. The rose was our last bottle before we departed. But at the sight of a mile-long line of cars slowly inching up the hill to the entrance and no clue as to how long we would have to sit and wait, we decided to make a U-turn and head to the friendly-looking farm we had passed on the way. Turned out to be a great decision. Valley View Farm is a cidery, winery, orchard, and farm market wrapped in one and set against a beautiful backdrop of rolling green hills. So basically you can sip on cider and wine, pick your own apples, eat local cheeses, and check off your grocery list all in one place. Your visit will start at the red barn at the top of the hill that serves as both farm market and tasting room. This is where you'll buy your bag for apple picking, try the wine or cider, pick up some grass-fed beef from the freezer, and/or grab some apple butter (there are easily 15 varieties) or a $25 jar of CBD honey (yep, that's a thing). This is also where you will interact with the staff, an awesome bunch who managed to keep their cool and crack a genuine smile even when they were overwhelmed by the growing line inside the market. We purchased a $23 half bushel bag - the largest size available - and strolled down to the orchard, sipping on a light cider with just the right amount of tart. The apple trees were still plentiful even this late in the season and we managed to fill our bag with a nice array of red delicious, galas, and granny smiths (which were delicious, by the way). Afterwards, we strolled back to the grass, laid out a blanket, and had a lovely picnic lunch marveling at those rolling green hills and our two-year-old doing an unintended impression of Julie Andrews singing "The Hills are Alive". It couldn't have been a more perfect day. A few more helpful things to know: - Masks are required for staff and patrons inside the farm market. - The orchard offers plenty of space for social distancing. - If you prefer not to lay on the grass, covered tables are available on the porch and to the side of the farm market. - The bathrooms are two porta potties located to the right of the farm market (there aren't any inside) so...bring hand sanitizer if you just can't hold it. We loved our visit and are already plotting the next one for pear picking!

For now they are Bordeaux-style blends focused on Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. They have some white grape vines but they are not ready to produce wine yet. They tasting experience/tour lasts about 1.5 hours. You tour the front of the vineyard, the barrel cave and bottling facilities. Over $300 for the tour and tasting for my wife and I. We recently visited Daou in Paso Robles and had more food and wine at a lower price. Also the price points on the wine are not tied to market norms. The Lost Mountain is $225 per bottle and the Rendezvous $110. This is considerably more than some of the best Virginia wines. For example, Linden's 2021 Hardscrabble Red is $68, The Barboursville Octagon 2021 is $75 and Glen Manor's 2022 Hodder Hill is $65. And at Total Wine one can purchase dozens of Bordeaux wines with 95 and up ratings for less than $100. We had a great time and enjoyed some high quality food and wines. Although the staff were friendly and helpful, their divided attention noticeably impacted the overall experience. The venue offers attractive hilltop views; however, the tasting room itself is small and felt cramped even at half capacity. The wines were solid--slightly better than those at the neighboring vineyard--which aligns with the winemaker's established background and experience. The winery is family-friendly and allows children. Service was pleasant, and pricing was more reasonable than nearby options. I would consider returning with friends, bringing a picnic, and spending a relaxed afternoon outdoors while enjoying a few bottles.
