This was a great example of why you should try a place more than once. Especially when it comes to wineries. My first time last year, I wasn't all that impressed. My wife and daughter really liked them. We went again this weekend, and I was really impressed with their red wines. They have both inside and plenty of outside seating. I believe most of the seating outside is in the shade with all the trees. You select the any 5 wines you would like to taste. You also have the option to just order a glass or bottle. They have 3 whites, a rose, 4 reds, and 2 sweet wines. They bring you the 5 wines with a sheet of paper so you can take any notes or mark the ones you like. The tastings are a nice amount so that you can really taste the wine. They are working to become a certified organic winery. I did start with their Ancestral Chardonnay, which I didn't care for, but I really don't care for Chardonnay wines. It was made very different which is why I thought I would try it. My remaining tastes were all the reds. 2020 Cab Franc - I really liked this one. I generally like Cab Franc and this one did not disappoint. I thought it had a nice amount of spice to it. 2022 Petit Verdot (Estate) - This is another grape that I really enjoy and this one was also very good. 2022 Tannat (Estate) - I liked this one as well, but would have to say this was the least favorite of the reds. 2022 - Crooked Run (Estate) - This is a blend of Tannat, Petit Verdot, and Petit Sirah. We stopped at this winery which is located in a very secluded area. If you're feeling lost, just keep going. The venue is really cozy and the staff was very informative and friendly. They had a smoldering fire going outside which added to the woodsy outdoors atmosphere. The owner is a pottery artist and sells her artwork inside as well. The wine was average. Stopped in recently, Arterra has a nice tasting room and patio overlooking the vineyards. They grow some at this location as well as another, and offer a ton of wines to taste ($4 each). Service was nice and they have snacks available but nothing substantial. Our group sampled probably 10 of their wines though and we didn't end up buying anything more. We love Arterra and have a membership there. It's a unique offbeat experience. The property is mostly wooded with the tasting room in an A frame near the top of a hill. There are nice outdoor seating options near the vines and indoor seating with table service. The tasting room is also the Hawkmoth Arts Studio and Gallery with mostly wine themed art. Beautiful work and we own a couple of pieces. Jason the winemaker harvests the fruit without residual pesticides and uses native yeasts and neutral oak. He calls it clean wine. The taste is more complex and natural as a result. We are big fans of his Petit Verdot, Tannat, and Cab Franc. They have some food. Cheese and crackers types of options. Service has always been excellent. If you want a mellow outdoorsy experience for couples or small groups this is a great choice. read more

We had a lovely mid afternoon picnic here today. We've been to a lot of the wineries in Northern Virginia and this is one of the most scenic. The plentiful outdoor tables look out into the hilly vineyard, which were picture perfect at peak foliage. The vines are young and the wines we tasted (gruner veltliner, rose, and petit syrah) were not as smooth as we normally like, but service was super friendly and knowledgeable. I like that you can bring your own food since they only have a few appetizer type offerings. At $36 for a bottle of white, the prices are a tad high, but I like that they are natural wines (no added yeast) and follow mostly organic practices. Ambience is amazing at this smaller boutique winery. Outside tables are available on a beautiful deck or among the tall trees overlooking the vineyard. The building is beautifully decorated and has many art works to view. It has a fireplace and would be just as enjoyable in the winter. You arrive from a lovely quiet lane to the entrance. Knowing they are serving "clean" wines and obtaining their Organic rating is a bonus. Mandy was our server and extremely knowledgeable. My husband and I visited on the Sunday before Memorial Day and were pleased to find the winery not crowded with ample outdoor and indoor seating. We were going for a relaxed vibe and sitting outside amongst tall trees with a beautiful view of the vineyard was perfect! Definitely off the beaten path. We split 2 flights of 5 wines. Both of us agreed the Albariño was our favorite. I also really enjoyed the Chenin Blanc and my husband enjoyed the Classic Chardonnay and red blend (Crooked Run). The tasting menu was interesting; we recently tried some wines aged in amphorae while on vacation in Spain and were excited to see this method used in VA! Employees were friendly/relatable and we learned that there are events on Friday nights in the summer that are kid friendly. We also took a little walk on a path that led to a beautiful view of the vineyard. Easily one of the best wineries I've been to in the area, which some of the best red wines I've had so far. They have a beautiful little tasting room overlooking the vineyard, and the sommelier was very friendly and helpful since it was our first time there. The tasting are set up where you can select any five wines for a fixed price. They have a large selection of red wines, a few whites and two sweet wines. The apple wine was a surprise- it was basically like a boozy apple juice. All of the reds we tried were excellent in their own right- it was the first time in a while I not only wanted to buy a bottle but had a hard time choosing which one. This is a wonderful winery minutes from Sky Meadows State Park; stopped by after a hike (late Saturday afternoon) and am so glad I stumbled upon this place. Very cozy interior and exterior; it's a rustic barn with modern touches and outdoor seating available right outside the entrance area. It was not overly packed and they did a great job spacing people out and following all the COVID precautions. Tried six wines and enjoyed every one of them; my friend did as well. The wait staff was super friendly, attentive, etc. They offer snack options (crackers, chips, peanuts, etc.). The outdoor seating area is amazing; wooded area with firepits and plenty of seating. We visited Arterra after apple picking at Hollin Farm. I hadn't heard of it, but when I searched for wineries in the area, it was the one that was close and also checked all of our boxes for being able to accommodate our group with options and prices and room to sit that worked for everyone in our group to be able to go and sit together. When we arrived, they explained their philosophy on "clean wines" made with native yeast, etc. They also told us about their art gallery displaying one of the owner's art. At first, I kind of wondered if it was going to turn into one of those passion project places that's too much about the owner's interests to be a good business. But, instead, it all worked rather nicely. I don't know if I believe that "clean wines" are necessarily better, but their wines are pretty good and the straightforward ways they make them allow you to pick up things in a wine tasting that you don't at other wineries. It makes it a little more fun/interesting. The art on display is good and fitting for the setting. It adds another fun thing to do at Arterra. And the setting is really pleasant. It's tucked in the woods with plenty of outdoor seating. The vibe is rustic but still a little elegant. I think their system for service works pretty well. The owners and the staff at Arterra have built a place that's easy to enjoy. I have been here twice now that I can remember and absolutely LOVED it. Kelly has helped me both times and has been very friendly to talk to and knowledgeable on the wines. It's rare for me to find a winery where I enjoy every single wine that's offered. As I get older and learn more about what really goes into everything we eat and drink, I really do appreciate that there are more natural ("clean" if you will) options to enjoy out there. I know the minimum sulfites and native yeast fermented wines are not for everyone's taste buds, but I and my mom have enjoyed them a lot! My favorite Arterra wine so far is their 2019 Late Harvest Tannat...I loooove a good port so this port-style wine (it's not fortified so not technically a port I guess, but better than some real ports I've had) was just right up my alley! I recommend this place to just about everyone who is interested in trying a unique winery in Virginia. I hope to be able to purchase some of the beautiful handmade art they have in their tasting room the next time I visit. Honestly, I would become a club member if I thought I'd be able to make it out there more when I'm off, but right now I tend to be working most days that they're open. This is a quiet, relaxed winery/art gallery. It is situated up a hill with vineyards and old-growth forest around it. There is a trail that allows you the most lovely views of the nearby vineyards and pastures. The wines are very nice. The fruit wines are divine. The reds are full-bodied with the deepest of colors - just lovely to see. The whites are twists on on the more common wines. The art is beautiful. Very earthy pieces that allow you to be grounded in the beauty of nature. One of the owners is the artist and her work adds an earth element to the entire place. Quite the place to be. I highly recommend this place for their wine and the fact that you can bring your own food. The staff is very accommodating and helpful. The wines are great but the back patio and yard are small so if you're looking for a quiet retreat this is not the place. It was not possible to move far from a very large and loud group, whose conversations we could not avoid hearing. Plus, two kids were going all out using their outdoor voices in a yelling and screaming contests. I'm not against these kinds of activities, but in this day we were looking for a quiet retreat. Normally, we'd give this venue a second chance. But the iron seats are so uncomfortable making it hard to relax and enjoy the wine with the view under the best conditions. IMHO read more

I was surprised how much I like the wine here. Normally, I admit when I hear any kind of alternative winemaking outside of traditional (no preservatives. No sulfites, etc.) I wonder if the taste is going to suffer. But, this made for an awesome chill day date out and the winery itself is very charming. At first we did joke we didn't want to end up in a "cabin the woods" movie but don't let it fool you. It's a quaint woodsy winery and the wine is awesome. We may have walked out with 7 bottles......I'm a red drinker but I fell in love with the blueberry apple, and did get some late harvest tannat and I'm very pumped to drink them. The fruit wine was sweet but in a nice way, not syrupy at all. I'll definitely be back and maybe explore some of the owners art that is for sale. Give it a try and you won't be disappointed. One of my favorite wineries, not just for the wine but the service. Lovers of bold reds - rejoice! Arterra's name is aptly chosen. Jason - the wine maker of the husband/wife team - feels strongly that wine should reflect the terrier of the land it comes from. His background as a viticulturist before he was a wine maker is reflective in his wine-making style. So note to self - find more wineries run by viticulturist; they seem to know what they are doing. At $10 for 6 wines (and no glass) you don't get a huge amount of wine, but I certainly left happy. Arterra is one of the few places that has Tannat and Malbec, so it's hard for me not to like them right off the bat. That, and all but two were reds. I had a hard time choosing favorites between the Petit Verdot, Malbec, and Tannat (not that the Cab Franc or the Blueberry-Apple wines were slouches). I even liked the very bright Chardonnay. Yes I said it - I found a white I would happily buy. He used to have a Late Harvest Tannat which I loved, but sadly it was gone this time around. The tasting room is very cute. The building doubles as a showcase for Sandy's art (the place is called Arterra - Hawkmoth Arts for a reason). I can't say I'm an artsy kinda guy, but at some point I can see myself getting one of the pieces which was molded from grape leaves. Jason or Sandy have always been my servers; both recognized me when I visited. And if you ask, Jason is happy to go to great lengths in describing his wine making process. Suffice to say he does things a little differently...something about his selection of the yeast (he explains it 10 x better than I could). While I was visiting he was being interviewed by someone, so I got even more detail than I normally get. She seemed impressed enough to say his Chardonnay echoed of Jim Law's wine, so that's a high compliment indeed. My only complaint is the price. The least expensive wines are $29, and several are $39. But in this case I'll be forgiving. Arterra is a small boutique winery (only 8 acres of their own, plus 7.5 under lease), so they are priced accordingly. But hey - when does craftsmanship come cheap? If you want $10 wines, go to Giant or Trader Joe's. If you want something special, come here. *** One last note - this place is NOT handicap accessible. It's great to find a winery in the area that is so focused on a clean process for winemaking. The owner is great, and takes unique care and an offbeat path from the typical Virginia wines by exemplifying the grapes correctly. While not everyone will appreciate what he's doing here, I feel that what he is doing here is very important as far as what Virginia wine can be. This place is great. Not mass produced, native yeast, spontaneous fermentation, low [and sometime no] sulfite, and delicious. Definitely the most old world style we've found in the area. Beautiful setting on top of it. Sadly this is my second visit and never been able to taste any wine. First they were closed when we arrived and the second was a light rain started and we had our little lap dog. Dog tolerant venue. You can have pets outside in the picnic area but not on patio or inside. You do have to climb steps to get inside. For handicap there is a place on the far side of the building but is still a bit if a challenge to get inside. Motorcyclist pass on this place and come back in a car. Without a doubt, Arterra is one of the best wineries in northern Virginia--truly a hidden gem tucked away in the foothills of Delaplane. Every time I visit, it's a truly delightful experience. Winemaker Jason does an amazing job creating top-quality wines that reflect the true potential of Virginia terroir. Arterra is part of the Clean Wine Initiative and produce their wines without added sugars, yeast or sulfites. It's a testament to Jason's skill (and taste!) that Arterra creates some of the most delightful VA wines that I have tasted without taking shortcuts on the production side. Some highlights include their award-winning Tannat and Petit Verdot, both subtle and complex, worthy of aging in your cellar (or closet). Most of Arterra's wines are on the dry side, however, for the sweet wine lovers there's also a delightful blueberry apple wine and apple wine as well as a late-harvest Tannat that all work well as dessert wines. Their production pleases a wide variety of palates. Jason's wife Sandy is a sculptor; the tasting room showcases her wonderful, wine-inspired pieces that are also available for purchase. I've been coming here for years and signed up to be a member last summer. With only a 12 bottle purchase commitment (you choose which wines) and complementary tastings for myself and a friend whenever I come in, it's truly worth it. read more

This place is beautiful, tucked away in the woods with a large deck and lawn for seating. Inside, there is lovely nature-inspired artwork that is created by the wife of the husband-and-wife team that owns the winery. She even offers classes! But I settled for a pretty plate with a leaf design. The wines are fine. I didn't like any of them enough to buy a bottle, but I had fun doing a tasting and enjoying a glass outside before I left. And I appreciate their local, sustainable focus of their wines. This place seems like a great place to host an event (someone was having a birthday party on the lawn), and if you're just interested in a winery experience, this was a fun one. Very rarely do I REALLY want to give an establishment 5 stars with no hesitations. It is a no-brainer to do so when it comes to Arterra. This is an extremely underrated, hidden gem of a winery in my ever-so humble opinion. Highly recommend a visit here! Back in the day, my step-grandma had a wood house / large cabin up in Michigan, quite similar to Arterra. The architecture here really evoked those memories. Also, the tasting room smells amazing: like wood and forest and utter peace. Our tasters were Lizzie and Kristie (hope I got the spelling right on the latter!), and they were both so fun to talk to and very knowledgeable about the wines and the winemaker. The art on display here (for sale) is GORGEOUS and so exquisite. It is crafted by the winemaker and owner's wife. Sadly we did not get to meet her or the winemaker / owner. Next time, here's hoping! My absolute favorite offering was the Blueberry-Apple wine. HOLY DELICIOUS! I was not expecting the explosion of flavor and tart + sweet combo that hit my tastebuds after the first sip. My partner-in-wine and I got a bottle of it to go with our picnic. Paired well with the Prosciutto; who knew? My only regret was not taking any pictures (other than of the cool "accidental art"). This was probably my 4th visit to this winery and I always enjoy my time there. The location is a bit hidden but honestly that's kind of what I like about it. It doesn't get super crowded like other wineries in the area which is a plus. I will say, the wines here are a bit on the pricier side but I really enjoy most of them. The whole atmosphere of the place is really chill. Also they don't just sell wine, there's some cool art pieces for sale. They have seating inside and outside. I believe this is a younger vineyard but don't let that deter you from checking it out. If you like wines that are a bit on the tart side, definitely try their blueberry apple wine! read more
