The day I visited Village Winery was a hot, humid day. It was relatively cool inside the tasting room. I met Kent - the owner - who also poured the wines. As others have noted - they store the wines in these foil pouches. Most of the wines I tasted were "fruit" wines - not traditional wines made from grapes. However, the last wine I tasted was a more traditional wine. In any case, everything I tasted was enjoyable - fruit or not! Definitely worth a visit for the experience! Sweet place. Want to go back there and see if the proprietor will let us drink wine and picnic on the lot (buy a bag of wine, he probably will). It's beautiful and serene. Watch for the beehives though. Give them respect. Not much for the fruitabaga wines. They're decent, but millennial-hipster-wine-coolers aren't really my thing. On a hot day, buying a chilled bag (bags, not bottles), and eating some cheese and yummy-snax outside sounds like a really great day. It's a good change (on occasion) from beer. read more

This is going to be a very unusual wine review for me, because Village is unlike almost any other VA winery I've been to. The tiny tasting room is kinda out of the way, in what looks to be a refurbished barn that doesn't have any of the amenities many wineries have. They don't have noshes anymore (they used to but their cheese guy moved away). Relatively little of their wine comes from grapes. They don't even use bottles! So why the 4 stars? Because of the WINE. See, Village has a very unique business model. Instead of bottles, everything is served in pouches, which surprisingly keep their contents cool (or so I'm told). Most of their wines come from apple blends; the only grape wine I tried was a Petit Verdot (although they do have others). That said, I REALLY liked a lot of the fruit wines. My favorite was the Raspberry Apple, but the Apple Elderberry wine (yes, bring on the Monty Python jokes) and regular Apple wines were nice as well. I wasn't so enthused about the grape wines, but that's not what they are known for. And in another year or so, expect them to serve cider! Don't come here for a party. But if you like fruit wines, it's worth a try. read more

I'm so happy to see all of the outstanding reviews! I've been here a large handful of times (wish I checked in! Ha!) and Kent is absolutely wonderful. This place is definitely not a large commercial winery and that's what makes it so special. It's a small mom and pop type place and it's so relaxing out in the country! Kent makes you feel so welcome and does an outstanding job with the wine tastings. Service is A+++ and the pouch wine is awesome! I went to the Village Winery on 6/30/18. I didn't know what to expect when my fellow Yelpers discussed the wine being served in pouches. I arrived when the winery was relatively slow (it was a super-hot day) and, as a result the owner had more time discuss the concept of the pouches with me. It apparently comes down to cost, more wine for less money when it is served in a pouch. It is the kind of wine(s) you're going to bring to a casual party when you don't know a person(s) individual tastes. Due to fact there are often restrictions on glass bottles, this makes the pouch concept even betters. The wine is overall delicious (but if you don't like fruit or sweet wines this is not the place for you). The Village Winery offers a free tasting which is so unusual these days that it is worth mentioning. It is apparent the owner believes in their product(s) and, therefore a free tasting is worth it for the larger sale. (The concept works I bought a pouch along with several other of my friends who were with me.) On a nice day, the tasting room is fairly small so I wouldn't recommend this place for a large group. The super-hot day when we visited kept the crowds away so my group did not have a hard time finding a table inside. There is a nice outdoor space where you could also enjoy some fruit wine and food as well. In a nutshell if you're a fan of sweet, fruit or ciders wines not to be missed. read more

My wife didn't like the wine. As she was the taster I have to go by her review of the actual 'product' The owner was entertaining & endearing. They have winery cats so that is a huge bonus. Unless your my wife who is convinced that one or both or them peed in the wine... Not pretentious at all, very much a family run place. It's down to earth. What a lovely spot! This winery is tucked away on some of the most beautiful land I've every seen. The owner is delightful and the wine is fantastic. Elderberry wine is amazing and the do wonders with it. Not only do they have great wine (Apple Wine, Viognier, Merlot), they even have a non-alcoholic Sparkling Elderberry Wine (which was perfect for my pregnant friend) and delicious Elderberry syrups. My group did a tasting then got glasses and enjoyed the sunshine on the grass. We enjoyed the peaceful surroundings, sheep playing near us, the amazing Civil War barn being restored, and, of course, the wine! read more

Folks, I give you Virginia's *best* bang-for-your-buck winery: Village Winery in pretty little Waterford. While these may not be the most premiere wines in Virginia, they're quite enjoyable. Owner and winemaker, Kent, is producing some very pleasant varieties, including a specialty of Village, elderberry wine, syrups, teas and dressings. Dressed in muck boots and a plaid-flannel with rolled sleeves, he led one of the most charming and down-home tastings we've experienced. It included: ~ A puckery 2011 Viognier ~ A likeable Apple Wine made from local Nittany, Ida and Golden Delicious apples with 2.5% r.s. ~ A dark 2011 Merlot ~ A NV Merlot/Cab Franc/Petit Verdot blend with a nice, long finish ~ A light-bodied 2011 Cab Franc ~ An awesome, full-bodied NV Petit Verdot ~ A 4% r.s. Apple and Elderberry wine ~ A crisp, tart Apple, Raspberry and Elderberry Wine with 4-5% r.s. ~ A refreshing Elderberry and Chokeberry iced tea ~ A smooth Elderberry Syrup ~ A well-balanced Elderberry Dressing I particularly liked the Petit Verdot and -- admitting that my extreme distaste for sweet wines may just be reserved for certain varietals -- the Apple, Raspberry and Elderberry wine. The best part about Village Winery, however, and the reason it has to be the best bargain around? Kent boxes the wines. No bulky glass bottles here, just supposedly more eco-friendly bladders in cardboard boxes, holding the equivalent of four bottles of wine. And each retails for $25 - 30. That's $7.50 per bottle! For some really decent Virginia wine, served in a rustic country barn, by a real character. Hence my excited four stars. read more

All the wine here is in a box. Does that make bad wine? Not at all, in fact it probably makes better wine. It really makes sense to put more of it in boxes, but we would miss the bottles then I guess. The place was cute, while the wine I tasted was good, it really wasn't my thing. Why I haven't written a review before for Village Winery is beyond me. I've been there 6 times and love this place! The owner, Kent, is awesome. The interior of the tasting room is rustic and really relaxed. It took some coercing, but I'm now down with the boxed wines. Three boxes on this last visit (you get $5 off PER BOX that way!). The wine is refreshing and delicious. He's selling too quickly, though! He was out of the Apple Elderberry this time, but it turns out that's okay. The tea syrup (which is amazing) can be added to the wines to make fresh new blends all the time. I also adore his Jersey Cow, Blossom. She just had a baby and he let us go out back to see them. Came here for the first time on a dreary March Sunday, and it was an unexpected jewel. The tasting room is very rustic so be advised if you're looking for some preppy hangout joint, Sunset Hills is just a 10 minute ride away. ;) Loved all of the wines - especially the Raspberry Apple and the white that had a lemon/lime twist to it? I forget what it was, but it was very unique!! Also their non-alcoholic elderberry tea...OMG...delicious. Sadly they were out so we'll have to come back in another couple of weeks when they have it. If you like your wines a bit on the sweeter side, I think you'll enjoy yourself here. Also loved the box concept - very economic and eco-friendly. I also echo the 'best bang for your buck' sentiment from other commenters. What would've given this a 5 star rating was some offerings of snacks to accompany your wine (either plain oyster crackers along with your tasting or items to actually purchase). When you think of wine tasting at a vineyard I'm sure boxes of wine are not in the picture. Enter Village Winery in Waterford, VA. You may be turned off at first, but once the owner, Kent, begins his shpeal on the advantages of boxed versus bottled wines, you will be hooked. First of all, one 3 liter box is equal to four 750ml bottles of wine, and each sells for only $30 (or $25 each if you purchase 3 or more boxes)! Second of all, each box keeps the wine fresh for (at least) two months after opened, you can't beat "fresh wine on demand"! Even more obvious than Kent's passion for the box is his passion for his wines; where else can you sample 10 wines for a "suggested" donation of $5? With flavors like Apple, Raspberry, and the much coveted Elderberry there's a flavor for each taste-bud. He even makes his own Elderberry Tea and Elderberry Salad dressing, and he encourages you to try both. He'll even mix and match several flavors of the wine to find the right combination for the taster. In the end, we opted to purchase a box of the Apple wine. Not only did Kent give us 3 wine glasses to enjoy our wine on the vineyard, but he also gave us an extra glass of the Elderberry Tea mixed with Apple wine and his Triple Threat (Apple, Raspberry and Elderberry) wine as a special treat. If you ever find yourself in the Virginia Wine Country I highly recommend stopping by and saying hi to Kent, and, of course, sampling a few of his favorite wines. There are lounge chairs and bistro tables set up on the vineyard, so don't forget to bring along cheese and crackers to couple with your fresh box of wine! read more

Of all the wineries I toured on my getaway weekend with my husband, this was my favorite. Delicious wines with very fruity tones. The blends were well combined with each flavor hitting your palate perfectly. Kent, the owner, was a delight. Be aware, there is not a wine bottle to be seen. Why? Kent boxes his wine for better long term flavor. I don't know about you but I hate going for one of my open bottles and finding it has turned nasty because it has been open for just a few days. I hate skanky wine. Each box is 3 liters which translates to the equivalent of 4 bottles. Where most wineries were selling bottles for $15-30 dollars each, Kent can offer his boxes at $30. I also like the fact that my recycling bin won't be overflowing with bottles. So to recap. Great wine, great owner/winemaker, relaxed atmosphere, economically/ecologically friendly packaging, box wine won't get skanky after just a few days of being open, your neighborhood won't think "wino" every time you set your recycling. I don't do sweet and only wanted to try the reds. at the insistence of the owner... I relented & let him walk me through the wines. w-o-w! It was a fun adventure, fascinating flavors, still had non sweet fruit options.. so grateful he convinced me. The apple & elderberry was my favorite - I bought two! Sounds seriously unusual... and I'm always have a preference for bold red.. but, I'm convinced! Just awesome. Let alone the packaging! (which keeps it fresh in perpetuity. Without a doubt, the best winery in VA! The first thing you'll notice is how quiet everything is, (a good change from all the ruckus DC makes.) As you make your way into the barn for a sampling, get your lips ready for some of the best wine to go down your hatch! It's a cute little vineyard that makes big tastes and plenty to offer it's customers. Our favorite is the Apple wine, followed by the delicious Elderberry Wine. YOU MUST MUST MUST MUST try these two wines and grab a few bottles for the road. As for the elderberry products, you'll die! Their syrup can "go on anything", especially ice cream, and is absolutely divine. PLUS, it's healthy for you and is connected to curing and preventing most illnesses (as informed by the owner.) If spirits aren't your thing, be sure to pick up the non-alcoholic elderberry wine. Seriously, words can't describe. And lets not forget the service! The two men that operate this vineyard are the nicest people you'll encounter and are happy to answer any questions you might have. Even though I'm not a wine drinker, I love visiting wineries. They tend to have great views and great architecture. Village Winery offered some great views- as for the architecture, well, its in the shed next to an old barn which needs restoration. But they have a fund going to restore it- after you try some of their offerings, you will be happy to contribute. Since I was the DD, the owner offered me a glass of their sparkling elderberry. I'm not a usually a fan of anything sparkling, but this was really good- I've never tasted anything quite like it. I really regret not buying a bottle. While the rest of our group went through a couple more wines, I was then treated to a sample of the sparkling elderberry heated with some fall spices- delicious. But the best was the last thing we sampled- elderberry syrup and elderberry chocolate syrup. Its like heaven in a spoon. We bought a bottle of the chocolate syrup without hesitation. We absolutely love it here. The wines are excellent and the owner/wine maker, Kent Marrs, is as nice as they come. I enjoy my wine light and refreshing, and all of Kent's wines hit the spot. Aside from wine, Kent is using the elderberries for other creations. He bottles the elderberries into two syrups, one regular and one with chocolate, and we buy them to put on waffles and oatmeal. He makes a vinaigrette which we use to marinate grilled chicken. He is also making a soft drink and tea out of the Elderberries (which we were lucky enough to try - they are awesome). Whenever family or friends come to visit, we always come here. There's a little something for everybody, and lots of space outside for the kids to run around. And definitely ask about the wine club - only two wines per month at a great discount. read more

This winery has lots of charm. Their good wine, great products, and lovely staff (ours was the owner) give you the perfect wine tasting experience. The winery is on a small farm and the tastings are in a old barn--don't be intimidated by this, it is worth going inside! I walked away with their Viognier and Carbarnet Franc, but elderberry is their feature item. They have elderberry, apple, elderberry & apple wines (yum!), which are perfect for those that prefer sweeter wines that aren't as sweet as ice wines. They also have a Cabernet Franc rose and other reds, and let you sample their syrups, beverage mix, and vinaigrette, all of which are pretty good! The owner gave the rest of our party great tips on how to use their syrups and vinaigrette and we all bought a pack of the local cheese that he serves with the tasting--yes, its not just oyster crackers! Yes, the environment is humble--humble but nice. So, if your idea of wine tasting includes a limo, huge arches, lots of expensive sparkly things, and high prices this might not be the place for you. If you prefer a down-to-earth environment, good wine, and a complete wine tasting experience, this is the place to not miss! read more

After you been to all the pretentious wineries in the area (where all the wines taste the same), stop by the Village Winery in old town Waterford. It may be a little rustic in comparison but this place is awesome and the owner obviously loves what he does. The petit verdot is very good as well as his creative use of apple wine and his love for elderberry. You MUST at least stop by for the Elderberry vinaigrette, it's worth the drive. read more

This is the 38th winery that I have visited in Northern VA and it is a must come see. The grounds a delightful, the wine is good, the elderberry tea and vinaigrette are worth the trip, but Kent (the owner and wine maker) steals the show. Funny, down-to-earth and friendly he will definitely impress you with his passions for wine and elderberries. He modifies the tasting for each person based on what you are liking, and he blends things together that make you tastes. This was one of those weird winery visits which should have worked but didn't. For the record, I think the place is quaint and great to house a winery. But, the overall tasting, and the attitude of the pourer, was a big let down. The tasting was finished super quick (not even five minutes, seriously). It was like bam, bam, are you done yet ,m'am. There was no explanation of the wines (unless we asked questions) and the pourer (I think this was the owner) was not overly friendly. There was one other person in the tasting room so it wasn't like they were busy. I personally did not like the wines, however, my friend liked the Apple Wine mixed with the Sparkling Elderberry non-alcoholic drink and bought one bottle of each. The Sparkling Elderberry non-alcoholic drink was the highlight of the visit for me (yum!). It might be worth a visit for that, although there are much better and friendlier wineries in the area. read more

A little hidden gem in Northern VA! I added this winery to my list because I prefer sweeter wines and apple wine was on their list. I must first say that I generally do not like Merlot and especially not the taste of oak on the back of my pallette. However, I did enjoy Villages version and the oak was especially light. The nice surprise was their Merlot Cabernet Franc & Petit Verdot Blend. They do offer Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot but they were out of stock. Next up were their fruit wines and as I tasted each one I couldn't determine which I liked best but I ended up not having to choose as they offer a "Triple Threat" which includes Apple, Raspberry & Elderberry Wines. The Elderberries are also harvested on the property. Rounding out the tasting was a wonderful blend of Elderberry & Aronia Tea. We tasted 3 versions which included the original, one with lemon added and then their sangria type which had the addition of the Triple Treat. Imagine fresh fruit added in the summertime for a wonderful refreshing treat! We walked away with 3 bottles of this concentrate and 3 "boxes" of wine. Yes, there are no bottles here, just boxes which is a nice change of pace. Sometimes I only want a glass and this is the perfect option. A new "bag" version with handles will be their new packaging after Thanksgiving which makes for a nice addition to a Christmas get together! A few tables were available out front or you could choose to sit in the Adirondack style chairs sitting in front of the barn overlooking the vines. Definitely worth a stop! read more

Great line of Elderberry products - the fruit is a miracle fruit for your immune system! The Cabernet Franc is his best red IMHO. The dessert wines are really tasty too. Great selection of local cheeses. Thumbs up on the environmentally friendly boxes and dedication to using local ingredients/recycled The only cons are the seeming difficulty they have with their phones/e-mail and website. A little bit slow when it comes to technology and correspondence! But, that's okay, we're after wine not technological razzmatazz. read more

A small spot, tucked away near Waterford, VA (and the first winery sign you'll find on route 9 after exiting route 7). This is a working farm, complete with sheep. Tasting room is inside a barn, and there are several tables outside. There is a lot of land here, and I prefer the location over the other Waterford winery (Corcoran). In addition to the usual Virginia suspects (Viognier, Merlot, Cab Franc, and the "up and comer" Petit Verdot), they make a few fruit wines here, including Elderberry. You won't have to visit Peaks of Otter for a taste of this unusual wine. They also make some pancake syrups here, with (what else)...elderberry. A good addition to the growing options in Loudoun county. read more
