We really enjoyed our visit to this winery. There was a ton of seating both upstairs outside and inside, which made it feel really relaxed and not overcrowded. The family that owns the winery was very friendly and welcoming. We decided to get glasses instead of doing a tasting since tastings were $25 and glasses were around $15 each. We liked the wine we tried enough to bring a bottle home with us. Since they grow all of their own grapes, the wine selection was a little limited, but everything felt very local and personal. We were hoping to grab a small snack while there, but they didn't have any food available. Most wineries at least have crackers or cheese, so that was a little disappointing. read more

While visiting Crimson Lane Vineyards, we also stopped here. The tasting room was busy, with only two staff members working, which resulted in inconsistent service. Although the staff were friendly and helpful, their divided attention noticeably impacted the overall experience. The venue offers attractive hilltop views; however, the tasting room itself is small and felt cramped even at half capacity. The wines were solid--slightly better than those at the neighboring vineyard--which aligns with the winemaker's established background and experience. The winery is family-friendly and allows children. Service was pleasant, and pricing was more reasonable than nearby options. I would consider returning with friends, bringing a picnic, and spending a relaxed afternoon outdoors while enjoying a few bottles. read more

The wine was good--mostly done in the French style (e.g. not a lot of jammy/fruity wines). I had a great rosé and cab sav and cab franc. The sparkling white was also refreshing! The interior is cute, although it's unclear whether folks with mobility issues have access to an elevator or not. I do wish they had A/C or even a fan because it's HOT inside. My friend and I randomly stumbled upon Capstone Vineyards after hiking a trail near by. We'd originally thought that we would go to Crimson Lane Vineyards however when we arrived we realized it was much fancier than we'd thought. We wanted more chill vibes where we could bring our own snacks. So we decided on going to the winery up the street and it was a beautiful surprise because we loved it. We did a tasting at their bar. The owner came outside and greeted us as we walked in. I thought it was a really nice touch. The entire property is really gorgeous with stunning views. Whether you sat outside or inside it was very cozy and felt like a second home for many locals. We were obsessed with their blend and Malbec (I think it was?) and both got bottles to take home. First time here at the winery. I was surprised that this was so tucked away on top of a mountain. The Mountain View's were worth the trip. This can be a lovely romantic day trip for two love birds. I felt welcomed by my wine expert, "Theresa". She was knowledgeable about the wine offerings and the grapes that are grown on the property. I bought a bottle Sauvignon Blanc to take home. The wine is light, tangy with a well balanced acidity. I tasted the champagne Chardonnay which was a bubbly. I wanted to buy that one too but I will be back. The prices were little steep. I tasted the Merlot which was also light with some body to it. The quality seemed worth it to me. My friend didn't think so when she went on a separate trip. The tasting room use to be a family home until a couple of years ago when it became a winery. It had a homey vibe. It was early in the day so they were not busy. The family use to grow the grapes for the wine but did not make the wine. This is a lovely place to pop into on a Saturday afternoon. Next time I will buy the bubbly Chardonnay. I am happy that this is available for walking tastings. I hear you have to have reservations for the other two close by wineries. I am happy to have discovered this place and actually stopped to check it out. You do have to walk up some steep steps. read more

Capstone Vineyard is so welcoming and their wines are a perfect display of their partnerships with other small businesses in the area. Came to Capstone on a Saturday afternoon wine tasting adventure with my husband and two friends. We started at Crimson Lane and then headed over to Capstone. These two vineyards both make great Virginia wine; I just think Capstone is more approachable and relatable to most people. Their tasting menu is straight forward, but also pretty diverse for a small and relatively new vineyard. I ordered a glass of merlot and my husband ordered a glass of Vintner's Blend, since those were the only two reds on the tasting menu. Our friends ordered the full tasting. Both reds were delicous. We ended up buying a bottle of each. We also shared a bottle of their cider with our friends and purchased a bottle to take home. We also thought the partnership with a local coffee roaster was cool, so we purchased a bag of beans too. The tasting room is small, but laid out well. They also have a nice second floor deck overlooking the mountains and fire pits on the ground level picnic area. The lady who guided our tasting was very nice and knowledgeable about the wines. I want to start off by saying I am in the wine business and had a colleague mention how great the wines were at capstone. I have been trying to make it out there for months. My style is usually more modern high and tasting rooms with seated experiences however, stopping at this gem was not on my bingo card. I was accompanied by my coworkers and the tasting room manager went above and beyond to show us how awesome capstone truly is like. New winery with definite promise. We were able to speak with the new owner/wine maker and he has a lot of vision for this winery which was a hobby for a couple from DC. Renovations will be taking place and I'm looking forward to seeing the improvements. Right now, parking is not marked and it's very confusing to know where you go for a tasting. There was a huge flight of stairs so I'm hoping renovations include handicap accessibility. The wines were all very good. We tasted two whites and 4 reds, all were dry and very good, the reds were young but good. If you want ambiance wait until the renovations, if you want good wine go now. One of our favorite vineyards. Staff is outgoing, friendly, and knowledgeable. Theo will take the time to sit and visit with you, get to know your preferences, and make great suggestions. The Sparkling Chardonnay is not to be missed. The sparkling apple cider is also one of my favorites. Honestly, from white through rose to red, the wines are balanced and full without being unctuous. I checked out the website and saw that Capstone had a highly rated Sauvignon Blanc. Unfortunately, when we got here, they were running low on the Sauvignon Blanc and were only making it available to club members. Boo. I understand that this is a small boutique winery, but if you aren't serving one of your three white wines, you should really keep your website up to date. I don't like Chardonnay, and that was the grape is in most of the white and sparkling wines. I tasted two if the reds 2023 vintner's blend and Francis-the Francis was smooth and well balanced, but I'm just not a big red drinker anymore. We got the Roussaine, a grape I'm not familiar with. It was fine, but not particularly remarkable. Flavors of honeysuckle but not much complexity and overpriced for $45. They had good live music and a small porch area, which had nice views of the sunset. Dogs are allowed in the outside areas, which is always good for us. read more

Don't come here looking for your 'traditional' wine experience of music, food trucks and crowds. Come here to sample GREAT WINE. They are only open by appointment. Jim Law (the fantastic winemaker at nearby Linden Vineyard) is their mentor and winemaker. Given he's one of the best (many say THE BEST) winemaker in the state, I don't know how you could ask for a better person to work with. You are served by one of the two owners in a small tasting room. It's rare to have so much one-on-one time with a winery owner, so I appreciate that. I LOVED the Chardonnay, although all four wines I sampled were excellent. Visit here, then go to one of the neighboring vineyards! I'd love to visit here and Linden back-to-back sometime. read more

Any winery with Jim Law as a mentor is going to be a winner, and Capstone checks all boxes. The wines are good to great, especially the Chardonnays (both the sparkling and the non-sparkling). The winery was extremely busy the Saturday I visited, and it was about 98 degrees outside. I do think the winery would be better in cooler weather and on a Friday or Sunday vs. Saturday. One star docked due to the rather pricey tasting fee. In 2024, it's rather hard to believe that 20 years ago, Virginia wineries either did not charge a tasting fee, or if they did, only charged up to $5. Not charging a tasting fee made the idea of buying a bottle or two to go more tempting. I wish the wineries would go back to that model, but in "recession proof" Northern Virginia, I guess the wineries can get away with this. Now that I know the wines are all fantastic, I can forgo the tasting in future visits and just "unwined" with a glass or two. More likely when the weather gets cooler. As a footnote: There is another vineyard you can see from the deck of Capstone Winery - this is a winery that is set to open next year. Crimson Lane and Fox Meadow Vineyards are also nearby. Add those to Linden Vineyards (which I believe is now reservations only) and you have a nice little winery selection in this area of Linden/East Front Royal. read more

We happened upon Capstone Vineyards this past Friday by accident as we were trying to go to Crimson Lane Vineyards but they were closed. On our way in to Crimson Lane, we had seen the sign on the road for Capstone saying "Open for Tastings" so we decided to check it out. We're so glad we did - it's a hidden gem! The inside is small but cozy and very nicely decorated (approximately 5-6 tables, a 4-person seating area, and a 6-seat bar). It was a relaxing and inviting atmosphere. We were lucky enough to be the only customers (cold and ice had kept others away) so we sat at the bar, which has a beautiful view overlooking the deck, toward the mountains. Jess took amazing care of us while we were there. I did the tasting which included a sparkling chardonnay, a sparkling cider, a vintner's blend, and a merlot, while my husband had a glass of Merlot. We both enjoyed the cheese and bread board. Jess let us know that everything on the cheese board is local to the area and she explained what each item was and where it came from. She even grabbed us some extra crackers when we had finished all the bread but had some goat cheese left to make sure we didn't miss anything. We had a great conversation and really enjoyed Jess' company! She told us all about Capstone, Linden, and winemaking in the area and really knew her stuff. She also said they get very busy when there is nice weather, particularly out on the deck or down by the fire pits, so plan accordingly for your visit! My family and I made reservations for their wine tasting. We got a very quick response regarding setting up a time to visit (it was the following weekend so plan accordingly). I'm not a huge fan of white wines, but I enjoyed every wine that was poured for us. It's easy to tell when someone is doing what they love and puts their passion into every glass. Theo was the wine maker for Rappahannock Vineyard. Theo is very knowledgeable and is happy to explain any question you may have about their wine or wine making process. I wish I had a better impression of Capstone vineyards as I was looking forward to my visit. At home, I prepared a picnic to have at the winery and enjoy a peaceful day with my book. Unfortunatelly, this did not happen. Once I started preparing my picnic at the winery, the owner showed up with his family and friends. They immediately started moving furniture around next to us, talking loudly about what should go where, and proceeded to wheel in a brand new bar table they brought. We moved to another table but that did not help. There was so much noise around, and the worst thing was that they completely disregarded us. We felt like intruders. As we were sipping our wine, more and more people started showing up to oogle the new bar, and approximately 5 feet from us, people started shouting: "Oh my God, this is the nicest thing I've ever seen." No one paid any attention to us, the customers. This made me sad and we left after being there for only 30 minutes. I did not enjoy my picnic and the wine at all. Advice: things like this should be done when the winery is closed and no customers are around. OR: Acknowledge the customers who are visiting your vineyard by at least saying "Hello" and apologize for the noise. We have visited the Crimson Lane Vineyards a few weeks ago, and the owner came over to our table to introduce himself and exchange pleasentries even though there were so many people around. I felt welcomed, and that's important. Perhaps the owner of the Crimson Lane Vineyard should give a few customer service lessons to the owner of the Capstone Vineyard. read more

Due to the recent pandemic throwing chaos into our daily lives, it was refreshing to visit an establishment to enjoy some normalcy (and some very good wine).
