This is a solid 4 stars BUT only if you are already knowledgeable about wine in general and a fan of high quality Virginia wines. In other words, this isn't a group event at a big winery with lower priced non-estate wine options type of place. Lost Mountain Vineyards used to be called RdV. In June 2024, RDV was acquired by Eutopia Estates which is owned by the Bouygues family of France. For now they are Bordeaux-style blends focused on Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. They have some white grape vines but they are not ready to produce wine yet. They tasting experience/tour lasts about 1.5 hours. You tour the front of the vineyard, the barrel cave and bottling facilities. Then you taste their three top red blends paired with ham, cheese, peanuts and biscuits. All the food comes from Virginia farms and producers. Both the wine and the food are excellent. Over $300 for the tour and tasting for my wife and I. We recently visited Daou in Paso Robles and had more food and wine at a lower price. Also the price points on the wine are not tied to market norms. The Lost Mountain is $225 per bottle and the Rendezvous $110. This is considerably more than some of the best Virginia wines. For example, Linden's 2021 Hardscrabble Red is $68, The Barboursville Octagon 2021 is $75 and Glen Manor's 2022 Hodder Hill is $65. And at Total Wine one can purchase dozens of Bordeaux wines with 95 and up ratings for less than $100. We had a great time and enjoyed some high quality food and wines. But due to the price point relative to other great vineyards we will not likely be back. read more

We wanted to stay cool for the 4th of July so decided to try our luck outside the city at Lost Mountain, and it turned out to be a really lovely way to spend the holiday. The tour/tasting is the most expensive one we've ever done (at $120 a person for 5 wines & a charcuterie board) but for the space and quality of the wines, it didn't feel like a waste. The property and underground caves were stunning, the staff was extremely knowledgeable and friendly, and the overall atmosphere was very relaxed. We paid for a small group tour, but no one else signed up for our time slot, so we ended up having a totally private experience, which was a nice surprise. Take note, they only produce red wines, so if you're looking for whites or sweeter wines, this might mot be the best place for you. read more

Service was great, venue was good but absolutely outrageously priced for not much more value (if anymore) than a winery 5 minutes away. The wine is good but if you want a bottle it's $130. We did the private tasting at RDV and it was a great time! Though very pricy, we thoroughly enjoyed the tour (and the specialty rose that came with it, just wow) and the tasting that followed. The wines were delicious, as was the charcuterie board. That wagyu beef was on point, as was the cheese and the honey. This was a magical experience! My husband and I took a 2pm tour with Carl. Upon arrival we were greeted with a glass of champagne. We were given a very informative tour by Carl where we got to see the beautiful property both inside and out. We got to explore the barrel room as well which was my favorite part besides the charcuterie board we were given! On the tour we got to try a few of their wines and then had time to try another three wines at our table along with a delicious charcuterie. Went well out of our way to visit this winery on a Saturday afternoon. Arrived at 230 pm and the gate was closed. Both Yelp and Google and their website said they were open. I tried calling to see if I went to the wrong gate and they didn't answer. I was very frustrated traveling all that way for nothing. Given this is a reservation only space - read. No children allowed. You being rude, using coarse language in an open space because YOU didn't do your due diligence is on you buddy. RdV certainly has some of Virginia's best wine, but compliments should end there. Their prices are higher than many premium Napa Valley wineries. And it felt to us that their business practices are shady. Allow me to explain. My wife and several of her friends visited RdV a few years ago and had a good tasting experience. A host there sold them on the benefits of becoming a wine club member. They were *explicitly* told - and sold on the fact - that members have the opportunity to come in for a free tasting annually. We became members for the next 2 years, and this May (2022) we went there for my birthday. Guess what? No free tasting, no discount, no free glass, no pat on the back, no nothing. Just condescending, gaslighting language about how they would never offer that and how we clearly misunderstood. And some other song n' dance about how their "policies changed" following the pandemic. All told, no clear answer as to why they sold one bill of goods and then played "backsies." Yelp friends, that's SHADY BUSINESS! We ended up going anyway and enjoyed our tasting and charcuterie platter. But we still left thinking we weren't going to come back, we canceled our club membership, we recommended to our other club member friends (who were also duped in this way) to cancel theirs, and we've subsequently told our other friends to avoid this place and spend equivalent money on places with equally good (or better) wine and honesty built into their practices. We sat down to a Krug Champagne, a Chateau Pape from Bordeaux, 2016 Silver Oak from Napa their 2017 Lost Mountain @$175 bottle. They also serve a lovely charcuterie board. The Most unusual experience to date we were so shocked. They only make 3 wines but when asked if we could taste the other ones we were told there was nothing open. We live in Northern CA so we are spoiled yes but this was ridiculous! I came here two nights ago for a small birthday. It was just my wife and I and one other couple. We had a tasting lined up and did the tour. The property was amazing and it was clear that it was a much more intimate, private venue. It was very quiet and people were spread very far apart, both in tents on the lawn an inside. The tour was very thorough and wasnt overly technical. Sometimes these wine tours can be overly in-depth and it feels like you are in a chemistry class. The tour was relatively informal but very interesting. It culminated in our tasting. There was pretty awesome meat/cheese board waiting for us and our wine. The tasting consists of both the Lost Mountain and the Rendezvous as well as some Dom Perignon. Of course I wish the tasting was larger but seeing as they only make three wines, you know what youre getting. In all the place was amazing. There are some complaints about the cost but as far as I'm concerned, you don't have to pay for it. It's certainly expensive but that's just the way it is. I thought it was worth it. read more

Wine: Atmosphere: Price: RdV Vineyard is nestled along the Blue Ridge Mountains in Delaplane, VA. If you are located in Washington, D.C. it is about an hour away from the city. Boy is it worth it - Out of all the wineries that I have been to (and I am from California!) RdV, is by far my favorite. RdV is not your typical, one-size fits all winery. It is an experience. Reservation only and for $70 you get what you pay for. Your reservation will get you a private tour of the indoor facility, wine caverns, view of the french oak barrels and bottling area, as well as a historic story on how Rutger de Vink created his vision. I won't spill too many of the details here, it's worth the experience. After your tour, you will be greeted with a glass of Dom Perignon, wine flight and Boars Head charcuterie platter. Choose to enjoy inside or outside! Additionally, you will most likely be greeted by Karl Kuhn. Karl is the Head of Hospitality at RdV and surely makes you feel welcome. He received his Advanced Sommerlier certification in 2019 and will share his wealth of knowledge on wine with your readily. It also goes with out saying that Karl is simply magnetic. I actually ran into him as a patron sipping on wine in the D.C. area at a local spot, Maxwell. He greeted me with such warmth and even remembered me from my time visiting RdV - if that does not make you feel welcome, I don't know what will. While sipping your wine, you will view the beautiful landscape that covers the granite hills that RdV was built upon. The granite is key for proper drainage that allows for Rutger to produce his world class wines. I am very impressed by Rutger's detail oriented to create great wine. Specifically, he ensures that all aspects of wine making are done by him and his team. He even bottles his own wines (which you will see on your tour) and takes out any third party. He controls every aspect of his product - he does not risk bottling wines to a third party where he has to commit to a certain schedule. If it does not taste perfect that day, it does not get bottled. The wine is simply said, impressive. Bordeaux grapes, planted on a granite hillside, producing wines that marry the elegance of Bordeaux with the bold spirit of California. And this California girl loves it! Beautiful, high end winery. They do not have enough of their own wine so they provide a comparative flight of 3 oz tastings. We started with 2010 Dom perignon then the 3 reds (1 from Napa, 1 from Bordeaux and 1 of theirs -Lost mountain). What an incredible experience! Businesses like these are why five-stars exist. If you are wondering if the $50 reservation/tour fee is worth it, then wonder no more and take a leap of faith. This tour was one of the most comprehensive and thorough winery tours I've been on. We started our tour outside at the vineyard then proceeded on to the fermenting room before exploring the barrel and blending rooms. At each spot, our knowledgeable guide explained the history and Mr. de Vink's thought processes. As for wine tastings, we started out with champagne then finished the tour at a communal table with three reds as well as a cheese and charcuterie board. Not only did I learn more about winemaking but I was also absolutely blown away by the care with which Mr. de Vink carries out his craft. His love for wine and his unfaltering dedication were palpable in just about every room, the property, and the wines. I won't spoil anymore, except to tell you that the White House apparently ordered RdV wines for a Nordic state dinner. I think it's quite fitting that RdV's wines would be served to represent American businesses as well as the American can-do spirit (i.e. growing world-class wine in Virginia). read more

If this review sounds like a broken record compared to the rest of the postings - it's because it is, and that's a good thing. The tour was the single best viticulture experience I've ever had, and I've been to at least 100 VA wineries (and some non-VA wineries) in the past 4 years. The tasting/production facility is also one of the most amazing buildings I've ever toured at a winery. The two reds they serve were both excellent. The only negative thing is the price - but it's a whopper. The tour is $50 and appointment-only, and the wines were easily the most expensive VA-grown wines I've ever seen (but at least you get about half a glass instead of a tiny tasting, plus a charcuterie plate). Because of this, RdV isn't for everyone. To get your money's worth, you really have to be a die-hard wine drinker, or have a deep interest in the mechanics of how wine is made. Fortunately both of those caveats apply to me, so I'm very glad I went! read more

Beautiful winery and nice tour. Plan on at least 90 minutes. It's appointment only. We were aware of the ratings of this winery but we didn't research times and details. We were lucky we arrived on a weekday right before their scheduled 1pm tour. Their were no scheduled appointments for that time slot so we lucked out! Our tour guide was knowledgeable about the products and history. Their was a lot of thought and passion put into the planning of this winery. The grounds are beautiful and the design of the winery was fitting to the landscape. I highly recommend the tour, walking out to the vineyards, their processing tanks, caves and packaging. At the end of your tour, 2 tastings and a nice cheese and meat charcuterie. Their wines are good but not bold enough for my palate. I already belong to 2 other wine clubs in Napa so their products weren't enticing me to want more. They only produce 3 types of reds. So I recommend the tour, great day trip away from DC... RDV is a fantastic experience for a specific type of customer - those people are 1) people who enjoy very good wine, 2) people who enjoy quiet, upscale locations, and 3) people who are looking for an exclusive experience with a community of like-minded wine-os Great Wine RDV makes four fantastic red / rose wines - they are known primarily for their Lost Mountain and Rendezvous wine (the other two are their Friends and Family and a Rose wine). Their wines are very good but they can be subtle - those that are able to recognize and appreciate the subtle particulars of wine will appreciate RDV's wines. Upscale and Quiet Experience RDV is an exclusive experience - this extends beyond the price of tastings, to the members only wine distribution, to the required reservations, to the small groups allowed to enter the facility. To some - that experience will be off putting. To those that want a smaller experience, that want to get away from the circus like experience of other locations, and want peace and quiet...its amazing. I like going to vineyards - this is one of the few locations that I am able to visit and relax. Exclusive RDV is exclusive for some many reasons - as my father puts it - you are basically signing up for a country club experience at a vineyard. Some people will like that - some will not. Some caveats - Location Its a bit far (exit 20 something off of 66) - but it's not too far. I am going to start going their more often when I feel like getting away for an afternoon. I want to be able to enjoy the peace and quiet of their location more often. Bang for the buck #1 I was talking to my friend about RDV and how the ambassador program can be expensive (luckily you get billed twice a year) and he pointed out how its not that bad when you compare quality to quantity. He is a member at 4-5 wineries and spends easily $3-5k on just wine from those places....none of his wine is remotely close to the quality of wine that RDV provides Bang for the buck #2 RDV organizes a lot of exclusive events with great restaurants, the also do a lot of wine tastings of other wines. I have just started doing those events - which each one of those events I feel like I'm getting more bang for my buck and also joining the RDV family. read more

The tasting experience is really lovely, as is hearing RdV's backstory. I enjoyed their wines (they were offering a vertical of the Lost Mountain!), however....the wine itself is way overpriced. A few years ago, bottles of new releases were closer to ~$125, which is probably where they should still be priced. Since then RdV has been testing what price the market will bear...a single bottle of 2019 (newest release) will now run you $225. This is *bananas* but apparently there are still a lot of people willing to pay for the marketing and "exclusivity" I'm all for supply and demand and free markets, but $225 for one young bottle of wine is pretty obscene compared to other wines of higher quality with more age on them. read more

This is the best vineyard we've been to in Virginia. The facility is gorgeous, the tour guide incredibly knowledgeable, courteous, delicious charcuterie paired with the tasting. It's on the pricey side, and they wouldn't let people buy and drink a bottle at the bar because the bar was for wine club members only (*side eye*), but it's only 1 hour from DC, making it the best way to escape the city for a day. read more

We came here for a wine tour with my sister and brother-in-law at 3pm on a Sunday. We had great weather and a tour group of about 20. For two people it was $100. They give you a glass of rose when you first get there and then about a 60 min tour with a tasting to finish. The staff was helpful and knowledge and RDV is defiantly one of the top vineyard in Virginia. I like yours that let you drink and fast wine throughout the tour or at different stops which is not the case here and really the only downside in my opinion. After the tour and tasting, we ordered a bottle of their cab and drank it in the lobby area together. Which was awesome. If you are coming here, the signage off the road is not great. Look low and you will see it. We drove past it as did the other car that was going the same place. read more

We've been to RdV several times, with friends or just as a couple and have enjoyed their tasting each time. We always learn something from our visit about them and the wine making process. The only issue we would have is that their prices have gone up significantly from $50 to $65 per person for a tasting. This is especially concerning to us, as the first time we went we not only enjoyed the amazing tour, the amazing tasting and the outstanding board of cheese and charcuterie, but we also got a full glass refill of the wine we enjoyed the most. The past two times we've gone, we didn't get this refill. We do understand why they needed to increase prices, as they were becoming too popular with the "sundress girl" or "woo woo girl" crowd and this was running off those who would potentially become members. We had very close friends who went for a tasting recently and had a horrible experience, simply because of the loud, party-going, younger crowd that was there at the same time. The management agreed that this was an issue and comp'd their tasting, which was very nice, but I suspect that prices have gone up to prevent this from constantly occurring. (and for that reason, I agree with it, I just wish there was a little more to the tasting.) They really do have amazing wines there and if you are truly into wine (red wine, that is), you MUST try RdV! read more

Angelica, our tour guide, did an awesome job. She was friendly, thorough and efficient. There were never many questions at each stop on the tour b/c she covered all the bases. We ended w/ a charcuterie plate and their 4 reds to taste. Made small talk w/ the others that were on the tour. Afterwards, you purchase whatever you liked. Just plain overrated. The facility is a Five Star - better than many in Napa. Better than virtually all in Nova that I've seen (well over 30). The staff tried hard but our guide was maybe a two. The tasting was a One. $70 per person! Better be damn good for that money. Started with A glass of Dom Perignon? Why not your wine? Then only two glasses of your own wine? WTF? No refills, no option to taste the cheaper offering. Prices- hah! $95 for the cheap red. $225! For the expensive one. Zero stars there. And the wine? Ugh. Typical terrible Virginia wine. Yuck. Couldn't even finish the cheap one. 2 ounce pour mind you. The $225 was drinkable but we thought it would be like $70 tops. Went out to dinner and bought a $60 Napa Cab (restaurant price) and felt so relieved that it wasn't us. So much better than the $225 that we'd just tried... Go if you must for the experience. We love visiting this vineyard with its stunning landscape and innovative viticulture that yields great (and not just great for VA) wines .... so imagine our disappointment when we recently went for a tasting at RdV that cost $150 per person and we were given only one RdV wine in the flight. Three of the four wines were from other vineyards! One of the three wines in the flight was so bad it was undrinkable by everybody in our party (notwithstanding RdV valued the wine at $50 per glass). When we mentioned that we did not like that wine to to the server she admitted RdV had had many complaints about the wine, and yet that is what was still poured in the flight. The atmosphere at RdV was as stunning as ever, and the service attentive, but almost all the vineyards in the area have wonderful scenery .... the wines served in this RdV "tasting" were truly not worth the trip. read more

Despite the claim of offering an excellent Virginia wine, this vineyard is marginal at best, and charges an outrageous price to pour Silver Oak from CA, a Champagne and a Bordeaux. They do offer a nice wine cave and tour, but their wine club and wine tasting is overpriced and offers little value. A huge disappointment after being part of their club for a year and then being charged over $800 for six of us for wine tasting and three plates of meat and cheese plates. read more

It looks like I am the first Californian to review this winery. The experience is far more intimate and personal than you find in Napa or Sonoma especially since the tour is given my one of the passionate owners. The wines were limited to the Rose, which is only available as a welcome drink prior to your tour, Rendezvous, a Merlot, Cab Franc and petite Verdo blend, the Lost Mountain, a primarily Cabernet Sauvignon blend, and a Friends and Family Blend only available to Ambassadors, or wine club members. I'd recommend the $50 tour/tasting as a one time experience. It includes a welcome drink, tour and a small taste of both the Rendezvous and Lost Mountain complimented by a tray of cheeses, meats and bread. The wines are descent, but at $90+ price points, you can do better with many California Selections from Cliff Lede, Charles Krug or Silver Oak! In addition I found that people who enjoyed the sweeter, more fruit forward wines from other Virginia wineries did not enjoy the tastings as much as I did. read more

Fantastic wine and the winery itself is beautiful. The staff here is amazing - extremely kind and just as excited about your tasting as you are. For the most part, I do not like Virginia red wines. In general, Virginia just isn't quite there yet with winemaking and figuring out how to work with the land; however RdV excels in doing just that. When we tasted their wines our first thought was "wow this does not taste like a Virginia red". Their wines are smooth and complex. I noticed a few reviews that spoke about the winery being by appointment only. This is true, so you need to plan ahead. They want to be sure they can accommodate everyone appropriately and also don't want a party atmosphere. I appreciate that personally, but I realize some people do want to imbibe with their friends, so that is something to keep in mind. read more

Still have not had a bad experience at RdV. After my first visit I joined their Ambassadors Club for 6 bottles per year. The cost is easy to justify because they only ship once per year (in the fall) and they're producing the best red wines in Virginia (seriously). I think the care they put into everything is extremely evident in the wines they are releasing. They shipped the 2010's last fall, they're beautiful but definitely need some more time to age in the bottle. Customer suggestion: Keep doing the First Friday gatherings. They're simple, relaxing and a great way to get people to come out. Maybe this coming fall (2014) give your local members the option to come to the property and pick up their wines rather than shipping them? I'd make the drive to come out and have a glass or two. read more

Great vineyard - this is about quality, not quantity. After we got buzzed in the front gate, we drove up to a great view of the vineyard and tasting room. The vines looked great and were surrounded by granite rocks. The tasting room is modern and sleek and we were greeted with a tasting from a wine not yet for sale. The tour itself is about 90 minutes, and our tour guide was energetic and enthusiastic, which made it enjoyable. The architecture and design is impressive, from the silo, to the cellar caves made to store the barrels. The actual tasting has small portions of cheese, honey, pate, ham and bread.
