My family stopped in for a quick bite (appetizer only). We were directed to have a seat upstairs in the bar area. We took a seat at the bar because every open table was dirty. Maybe 12 people seated in the entire room. Took our seats... we were approached after 10 mins. Menus. Waited another 10 minutes. Bartender asks for our order. We ordered our food and he responded, "I wanted your drink order". Really?! Ordered four glasses of water and two apps. We asked for one app to be divided on two plates, bartender said "I'm not gonna do that. They're (kitchen) busy". We sucked down our food and water, asked for the check twice due to being on a time constraint. Dude never acknowledged. My husband finally stopped the bartender, asked for his name. "Brian/Bryan" while walking away. We left enough cash on the bar to cover our bill with a generous tip just so we could get out of there. Worse dining experience we've had an extremely long time. Bryan/Brian's attitude was nothing shy of being inconvenienced. Won't ever return! read more

Alesatian Brewery is located in the Olde Town section of Winchester VA. It is not easy to find from the walkway, it is a single door next to Roma Old Town Wood Fired Pizzeria. I passed it twice. AND, the funniest part is you have to enter through the pizzeria, make a right, go through another door and then up the stairs. When we walked through the other door at the top of the stairs,, it was like walking into a disco. Funk/Disco music jamming in the background, disco ball... taking me back to my rollerblading days. It is a small venue with limited seating, but they do have a full menu including apps, salads and pizza. Everything you'd need to pair with your beer. Impressive! What was most exciting was the flights. THREE 8 oz. Pours for a whopping $12 bucks. Can you say, "Winning!" The BEER: Well... Ya Know Belgian Ale 6.8% ABV... it was a little more hoppy than I am used to in a Belgian, still quite good. Reminded me of Unholy by Coppertial Gen 2 Indian Pale Ale 7.4% ABV... a solid IPA, slightly hoppy and citrusy. LUV IT Hazy Mindset hazy IPA 8.1% ABV... hazy citrus delicious and to be over 8%, you'd never know it. FIRE! Loka Koko coconut Stout 6.7% ABV... semi sweet chocolate and coconut. Like a dark chocolate almond joy. GREAT! Fish Face Meher lemon sour 8% ABV... it had a different taste, it was okay. Life on Marzen lager 6.1% ABV... absolutely awful! Down Unda IPA 7.1% ABV... if you don't like Life on Marzen, you will hate this. Most of the beer was awesome. The service was top notch. They had 2 people managing the bar and they were very attentive. Even for our table in the corner. Didn't get to try the food on this visit, but I will return. read more

My friends and I dropped by this spot around 8:40 -- twenty mins before they close. We were a bit worried that we wouldn't get a chance to order a drink because we had arrived so late. However, the bartender was kind and inviting and told us "take your time and enjoy your beers" after we ordered. We didn't stay long, but really enjoyed our time here and how welcomed we felt. The menu had a wide variety of options including a fruited sour, porter, lager, IPA, alcoholic seltzers and more. We were able to taste a few before we ordered our beers. There was space to sit at the bar and a few larger tables near the windows. The beer was great and we enjoyed hearing about the brewers/owners from the friendly bartender. I brought my laptop and got a little bit of Yelping done while I enjoyed a thoroughly perfect hefeweizen. It's a neat spot, upstairs from the pizza place. A little difficult to find, since it's located above the pizza restaurant and there's a small door with the brewery's name. To get to the brewery, you need to go inside the pizza place and the waiter will lead you to the door upstairs. As you walk in, there's the bar area and table seating. It's small, but cozy. The beer selection is average with the hazy and maibock being my two favorites. I didn't order food, but the menu consisted of standard bar food. read more

Alesatian is a fairly recent addition to the Greater Washington, DC area craft brewing community. They are located in a section of Old Town Winchester that is a walk in dining/shopping area. You'll need to find some place in the area to park and walk in. It's located upstairs above an Italian/Pizza restaurant named Roma. You need to enter through the front door of the restaurant, proceed to your right, pass through another door and go upstairs. I sat at the bar on the far right end. I mention this as this is in close proximity to the drain for the brewery - which smells a little funky. The bartender mentioned this to me and apologized. I could have moved to another area where you cannot smell the drain, but I was to lazy to move. I had a flight of brews to taste: Pizza Bier (American Amber Ale)(5.0% ABV) Hill High Pumpkin Porter (6.2% ABV) Secret Warrior IPA (7.5% ABV) The size of their tasters are larger than most other craft breweries. The Pumpkin Porter and the Secret Warrior IPA were both very tasty brews - would order a pint of either. The two guys working behind the bar, I can't remember their names, but both were very friendly and we had some fun, interesting discussions about craft brewing! Best brewery in town for sure! I had their barrel-aged stout a few weeks ago, and it rivaled Goose Island Bourbon County! Much better than the Founders CBS or KBS. Also, their Gen2 IPA is great. The bartender and head brewer are both super nice and are happy to talk beer with the guests. A great spot in a small town, but their beer would rival any brewery in a large city. Had the Loka Koko coconut stout and the Arrogance over Ignorance Stout and both were solid and full of flavor! Also had the falafel app and the Iron skillet crab dip and both were delicious. I loved the location. Cute and tucked away!! Staff are fantastic and the wings were great! I didn't quite have the pallet for the beer. Ordered two flights,3 8oz pours. Seems like a lot of wasted beer if you are trying things out and decide it's not the one for you. I watched a lot of beer get poured out from other customers, I suppose the same situation may have applied. Maybe smaller glasses for those flights and this would have been perfect. Alesatian is a brewery above a Pizzeria. This means that you get to order from said Pizzeria. Thankfully, said Pizzeria has amazing pizza. I had the Trifecta which had sausage, pepperoni and sopresatta, all of which was on a neopolitian style pizza. It was awesome. Great meats and a dough that was what you'd expect from a great Neopolitian Pizzeria. We also got their mozzarella sticks that they made in house. It was pure breaded and fried mozzarella, served with marinara. So, so good. Well, I've talked about what I ate, let's talk about beer. I did not dislike a single beer. In fact, I loved the Citra Wheat. It was hoppy and bright with citric flavor. So nice. I also really liked the IPA Hop Sneeze, which we had at the recommendation of the bartender, who we later learned was also the Brewer. Cheers to Alesatian. After a day of driving all over northern Virginia, I was ready to sit down and sip on a good beer. It took a little while to figure out exactly where this was. They're located in the upstairs area of Roma's. Once inside, we were directed to the door right behind the hostess' stand where the stairs were. Their space is nice and cozy, but on a Saturday night, I can only imaging how packed they would be. It's not the largest area. We sat down at the bar and were greeted within a minute or so. I got tasters of Paw Paw Seein' Tripel, Loka Koko (my favorite), Hop Sneeze, 320 Citra Wheat and Pizza Bier. I was a fan of all, but the Loka Koko definitely was the winner. So smooth with that subtle coconut flavor. Love, love, love! The beer tenders were super friendly too. They even gave us some free stickers! This place made for a great ending to our day. read more

Another new and awesome brewery in Winchester above Roma's Old Town Wood Fired Pizza just a short walk down the walking mall. The tap room is not very large, but if there's less than 20 people then it would be not too crowded. Be advised, no air conditioning upstairs at this time. It is intriguing how they put their own twist on to make unique brews! I enjoyed the Pizza Bier, 5th Dimension, and Loka Koko. The 5th D was by far the craziest of them all, literally smelled like cheese, but went down as a sour beer. Their Loka Koko was also enjoyable with a hint of coconut in the stout! Lastly the pizza bier they added some additional wheat to make it taste more bread-like, I didn't pick up on it. Another convenience is you can order food items from downstairs! We went downstairs to eat in the air conditions. But if you're up for trying some different brews, you should stop by! read more

Visited Alsatian Brewery on a Saturday afternoon while passing through Winchester. Small operation that in my opinion is the quintessential craft brewery. Let's start with the staff. This is a nano brewery that is basically a 3 man operation. The gentleman behind the bar was courteous, very friendly and very knowledgeable of the styles of beer that this brewery offered. I didn't get to meet the brewer or assistant brewer but these guys definitely know what they are doing. Their beer is amazing!!! I only had their hazy IPA ... delicious. The bartender gave me samples of their lemon sour and west coast style IPA. The hazy IPA and lemon sour were off the charts. They rotate their beers with 4 styles that are standard and always on tap. This place is definitely a case of "smaller is better". Give this place a try if you like WELL CRAFTED BEER. BTW ... didn't try the food but they are located above a restaurant in Old Town. The food that I saw other people had ordered looked quite good. UPDATE: Decided to visit Winchester Brew Works and Escutcheon Brewery. I tried their hazy IPAs. We have been wanting to check out ABC's beers for a while and finally had the time to stop by today. The ambience of the bar was great and the staff was friendly and quite helpful with helping us select a few beers for our beer flights. Unfortunately the style of beers they produce are not our favorites. I'm not a big stout fan and to me all of their beers were a riffs on the same stout backbone. That being said, we'll definitely be back to sample other beers that we didn't get a chance to try. read more

Amazing micro-micro brewery on the pedestrian mall in Winchester. Paul, one of the beer makers, was manning the bar and gave excellent recommendations on the beer selections and warm service. My wife and I shared a flight (three 8 oz. pours) of the Pizza Bier American Ale, Hop Sneeze IPA, and the Koko Stout. The IPA was exceptional and the coconut stout was like drinking a Girl Scout Samoa cookie. We ordered two apps as well: fried calamari and the falafel. Both were ridiculously well-priced (about half he cost of what you would pay for similar quality in DC) and perfectly prepared. The food and beer quality, combined with the excellent service, made this place such a winner! If we were locals, this would definitely become a regular watering hole for us. read more

Had their beer once while eating pizza downstairs at Roma and went upstairs to try out the brewery itself tonight. At Roma I had a pizza (very good btw) and tried out their "pizza bier" which I guess isn't supposed to taste like pizza but instead compliments pizza well and it was great and really did pair well with pizza. Going upstairs to the brewery, it's a laid back and cool environment. There just as a nightcap I sampled the citrus wheat which was very good but ended up trying out their nitrogen infused stout. I love a good stout and this one was great. This seems like a nice place to relax and hang out and I look forward to trying out their other creations. read more
