It really felt like a hike and when we showed up we were a bit confused if it was open and where to park. However the service we received was great and really welcoming. We did two tastings and the tasting boards were nice. It's not much of a location to hang in- just one room so our loud group kind of took over. They have a few cocktails too which were tasty (one with chai and cardamom was nice). I am not a whiskey expert so I can't really say if their whiskey is awesome or not. I did purchase a bottle because I liked the whiskey enough to support a local business. Why three stars? It is not a destination place. I am a fan of wineries and breweries that have a bit of ambiance and history to them. This is not one of those places. Upon arrival I wasn't sure if there was a tasting room or not. It looks like a warehouse with no defined parking and no "warmth" to bring customers in. The tasting room has space for 8 people and can be filled with 5. The tasting room is more like a converted office with the expected customer to be a distributor. I asked the server about the history or what makes their whiskey different from others. The answer was "We are between a micro distillery and a large manufacturer." I was hoping for something like grandpas recipes or locally sourced grains but I got nothing. I look for places to be and enjoy a drink with friends. This is not one of those places. A delightful distillery off the beaten path. The server, Mike, was great. We had 2 whisky flights and two maple old fashions between the eight of us. We all enjoyed everything we had and we purchased bottles to take home. A couple of nice seating areas outside. No food options. The tasting room is nicely appointed and has a speakeasy feel to it. I was excited to visit Filibuster's tasting room. I drove more than an hour out of my way, prioritizing over other places I could have visited, and while their website reported that they were open, I got there and they were closed. There's nothing on their social media indicating the change in hours. I won't waste my time trying again, and I'd recommend if you're going to take the time to drive to a distillery, you choose one of the other excellent places in VA that respects customers enough not to waste their time. You could try Copper Fox in Sperryville for whiskey, Dida's in Huntley for brandy, vodka, and gin, etc. read more

BEWARE HIDDEN TASTING FEES!! There is a fee for a basic tasting and the "premium tasting". $16 and $29 respectively. I was not told this when I went into the tasting room. Frank, the pourer, never mentioned that there was a fee for tasting. He just started pouring. After the four pours of the basic tasting, he just poured three more samples and didn't say a word about how it was going to cost me 30 MORE DOLLARS! Nowhere were there signs posted about tasting fees either. I was essentially ambushed at the register when I bought a bottle of Dual Cask Bourbon. I'll admit, I was impressed with the product, the bourbon is very good, their morals and business ethics, however, are not so good. They were busted for dumping industrial waste into the river not too long ago! I had never heard of filibuster but was in the area on my own winery tour and wanted to mix it up a little with some spirits. Im still fairly new to the whiskey world and was not disappointed by theirs. The cask rye was pretty good and smooth and i could have done without the gin altogether. The tasting rooms parking kinda sucks but the space inside is cozy and cute. We were able to grab a seat at the larger table and leisurely sip on our tastings. I've absolutely had better Rye's so i cant see myself buying a bottle but id recommend it as a stop to breakup all the wine in the area. read more

I never heard of Filibuster until it was recommended by a local brewery. A new distillery? No, they explained - it's been around for a few years. Intrigued, I set out to investigate. Turns out they were right - Filibuster has indeed been in business since 2013, although this is definitely a working business and not so much of a tasting room. Don't get me wrong - they love visitors and have a 'tasting room' inside the building. But they are HARD to find, since nothing than a roadside sign points the way to an industrial area that has absolutely no branding announcing which door to enter (it's the red one). What sets them aside is all their products are double barrel fermented - specifically, they do their secondary fermentation in wine barrels. I suspect this gave my whiskey samples a distinct oaky, smoky quality - which in this case, I liked. I had 4 x samples; the Filibuster bourbon, gin, rye, and a whisky that was a mix of the Filibuster and rye together. The Filibuster bourbon was aged 4 years; oaky, smokey, and just a hint of sweetness. The Boondoggle whisky was even nicer and notably complex. I had just a small sample of the gin and rye, but I'm not a huge fan of gin in general so I can't really comment on it. read more

Disappointing. You know that feeling of anticipation? You're sold on trying that new place. You do the research. Read the reviews. Check the open days and hours. Sadly, I drove an hour only to discover The Tasting Room was closed. Called the number when the door was locked. The owner explained a sewer leak closed them down. He offered to open it - but did not have the keys. Committed to trying Filibuster - I drove another 30 minutes to buy a bottle of their bourbon. Again, disappointing. Although finished in an oak barrel (which I love), it lacked any unique nuances making it worthy of a $48 price tag. read more

Hubs & I went here over a year ago with friends & it was awesome!! The distiller came out of the back where he was distilling to give us a tour & walk us through a tasting. That dude was knowledgable, engaging, & a lot of fun. Overall feel is that if a legit speakeasy. On the outside & inside. 12-31-18 Hubs & I went back with his parents. The kid working was nice enough but couldn't answer most of our questions. He seemed rather uncomfortable & slightly standoffish. Their parking situation is still terrible but their signage has improved substantially since our first visit. read more

I did not like any of the tastings that I had when I was there...except for the water that they were very proud of. After leaving, I saw an article online that the distillery that was raving about its water has charges pending for dumping industrial waste into a stream! The article doesn't say where the water was that was contaminated so either they gave us "fresh water" from there or they contaminated water for others. As 81 was at a standstill due to an accident or two, my friend and I decided to stop at Filibuster when we saw the sign at Tom's Brook. Best. Decision. Ever. Annette greeted us with a smile and we chatted while tasting their delicious Whiskey, Rye, Blend, and Gin!
