Tasting
LaToya E.

I had never heard of filibuster but was in the area on my own winery tour and wanted to mix it up a little with some spirits. Im still fairly new to the whiskey world and was not disappointed by theirs. The cask rye was pretty good and smooth and i could have done without the gin altogether. The tasting rooms parking kinda sucks but the space inside is cozy and cute. We were able to grab a seat at the larger table and leisurely sip on our tastings. I've absolutely had better Rye's so i cant see myself buying a bottle but id recommend it as a stop to breakup all the wine in the area.

Yes - this is the distillery!

I never heard of Filibuster until it was recommended by a local brewery. A new distillery? No, they explained - it's been around for a few years. Intrigued, I set out to investigate. Turns out they were right - Filibuster has indeed been in business since 2013, although this is definitely a working business and not so much of a tasting room. Don't get me wrong - they love visitors and have a 'tasting room' inside the building. But they are HARD to find, since nothing than a roadside sign points the way to an industrial area that has absolutely no branding announcing which door to enter (it's the red one). What sets them aside is all their products are double barrel fermented - specifically, they do their secondary fermentation in wine barrels. I suspect this gave my whiskey samples a distinct oaky, smoky quality - which in this case, I liked. I had 4 x samples; the Filibuster bourbon, gin, rye, and a whisky that was a mix of the Filibuster and rye together. The Filibuster bourbon was aged 4 years; oaky, smokey, and just a hint of sweetness. The Boondoggle whisky was even nicer and notably complex. I had just a small sample of the gin and rye, but I'm not a huge fan of gin in general so I can't really comment on it.

Disappointing. You know that feeling of anticipation? You're sold on trying that new place. You do the research. Read the reviews. Check the open days and hours. Sadly, I drove an hour only to discover The Tasting Room was closed. Called the number when the door was locked. The owner explained a sewer leak closed them down. He offered to open it - but did not have the keys. Committed to trying Filibuster - I drove another 30 minutes to buy a bottle of their bourbon. Again, disappointing. Although finished in an oak barrel (which I love), it lacked any unique nuances making it worthy of a $48 price tag.

I hate their liquor. It tastes like the creek that they dump their untreated garbage in.

It was a chilly day and we followed the instructions to ring the bell when we were outside. Shout out to the folks here who provide the cute cat with a heated blanket to lay on during cold weather. Members of the staff quickly came by to let us in and we walked into a empty sitting area. To be fair, it was around 3:00pm on a Wednesday. The vibe inside is eclectic, homey, and comfortable. We grabbed a seat at a table near the fire. We had time to review menu. I picked a classic Whiskey Sour and my Mom got one of their warm whiskey cocktails. Both of us really enjoyed ours. We sipped and savored them and just enjoyed a bit of a respite from our road trip. We both got a bottle of their whiskey to take home with us. These aren't your standard whiskeys and they are definitely more expensive than what you'd probably get in the liquor store. We've been enjoying our purchases at home since our visit. Copper Fox is a nice stop and I'd recommend it to folks wanting a break and a beverage.

He took the time to explain everything in detail, which gave a great appreciation for how much goes into making their bourbon. After the tour, we had the opportunity to taste several of their bourbons, which was definitely a highlight. Each one had its own unique flavor profile, and it was a fun and engaging experience to compare them. Overall, a great stop if you enjoy bourbon and want to learn more about the craft. Just be prepared for a slightly longer tour, but it is worth it for the knowledge and tasting experience.

We had a bit of time to browse the store before the tour started. The tour was about an hour and included a free tasting. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and led us through the history of Virginia's oldest distillery. He was a bit hard to understand and talked VERY fast, which made it tough to absorb much of the info. However, for a free activity I enjoyed it. The best part of course was the tasting at the end. We were led through how to taste the spirits and given water and crackers as palate cleansers. We tried one of their gins, two bourbons, and the caramel bourbon cream liqueur. The bourbon cream was delicious and so smooth! I really liked the gin as well. We all ended up buying at least one bottle, so I'd say it was a success.
