We stopped by Castle Vineyards on a Saturday evening, excited that they were open late (until 7PM). The interior had rustic farmhouse decor, with a bar to order at and plenty of seating. They offered both tastings and flights, but my friend and I both chose a glass of Rosé. The staff member had described it as crisp and dry, but it was still a bit too sweet for my preference - not terrible though. We sat on the rocking chairs outside and admired the nice view of green fields. I think they were setting up for a private event in the meantime, because people kept showing up with their own trays of food, and a whole bunch of children and dogs. My first winery experience was in Castle Vineyards when my friend and I did a mini bachelorette together in the Luray area. This place is serene and extremely peaceful and I could probably just sit outside and take everything in for hours. There are a few boardgames to play as well. There aren't a lot of seating inside, but during the daytime, the place was very laid back and not overcrowded. There are no marked parking spaces, but people typically park on the grass and there is ample space for so many cars. The interior of the main building was very simple and "bare bones" but had a homely charm to it and the lovely woman who served our flights was such a gentle, warm person who complemented the peacefulness of the place! My friend and I ended up buying our own bottles of wine and my fiance absolutely loved the Barren Ridge's Touriga wine that I got for him! Will definitely be back to bring him the next time around! We make regular trips to the Shenandoah Valley and Castle Vineyards is one of our favorite stops to make during our weekend trips from DC to the Valley. We enjoy the gourmet food, the service and social scene that the Loudoun County wineries offer. Castle Vineyards excels at everything we don't like about Loudoun County wineries. You won't see the Large Crowds, Advance Reservations Fess, $70 bottles of wine, $20 personal flatbread pizzas and mandatory 20% tips at Castle Vineyards You are instead greeted by a very friendly dog upon arrival who will guide you from the parking lot to the front entrance. The winery is a small locally owned family business and you'll taste your wines in a portion of their house that they have dedicated as the tasting room. Once you pick your wines you can have a glass or a bottle for the front porch or in one of their picnic tables. It's so relaxing to take in the views, fresh mountain air and to not be rushed from your table as you are taking in life at a slower and more enjoyable place. We highly recommend this winery and our favorite wine is the Barren Ridge Petit Verdot. read more

Castle Vineyards is what happens what an entrepreneur decides to make a winery. The owner loved wine tasting and has a beautiful home (on multi-acre farm) that he wanted to put to better use, so he partnered with Barren Ridge Vineyard to become a satellite tasting room for them. 100% of Castle Hill's wines are from Barren Ridge. The idea may seem crazy, but it makes sense because Castle is close to touristy areas like Luray Caverns, and with a new brewery and distillery in the area, it even has its own mini alcohol trail. And Barren Ridge is an excellent winery. The only thing that is mildly disappointing is this is not your 'typical' winery location. The house is very nice (and porch is inviting) but it's on the small side for a wine tasting room. No word on future food trucks or music, but unless they get a lot more traffic, those probably won't happen in the near term. Even so, I really enjoyed my visit, and if I'm in the area again on a nice day, I'd probably return. read more

It's been approximately two years since we went to Castle, so take that into account. The wine was okay (5.5/10) but it was definitely an odd set up considering that you're essentially just drinking wine from an actual winery out of some guy's house. Basically Castle is just a distributor for wine grown elsewhere. The guy is nice and the house is cute, but it's definitely just an odd set-up. It's definitely ridiculous enough to go to once if you're in the area and you may find a cow in the backyard to pet. read more

You'll feel like you're driving up to someone's house, but don't let that stop you. The tasting is $10 and you get to sample 7-8 wines & keep the glass (a good deal in my opinion). Virginia wines are not my favorite, but these Barren Ridge are drinkable. We enjoyed a bottle on the patio & took 2 bottles ($45) with us. If you're disgusted by the $40 bottles of sugar wine they normally serve up in Loudon County, you'll love this place. Probably because it's close to the mountains & cooler, they seem to make better wine out here. I think the owner & the vibe of the place make it very welcoming... and yes - the boxer Duke is quite charming & may steal your heart. read more

I don't have much to say about this winery- it's set on a beautiful location, with friendly staff and a nice house to sit on the porch and drink your wine. But that's the problem- the wine. The wine is brought in from a winery in southern Virginia. Its quality is mediocre. Really- I tried about a dozen wines from Castle, and none of them spoke to me. Some tasted somewhat syrupy, so much that I couldn't finish the small sample. Maybe I'm a wine snob (I don't consider myself one), or that I came from some higher-end vineyards earlier that day, or that I just don't care for wines with less body and distinction, but I would not return here in the future. I understand Castle Vineyards will be producing wines from their own vineyard grapes in the near future- I wish them the best of luck, and hope their new products appeal to many wine drinkers. read more

Not what we expected as we pulled up, but I'm glad we went inside! After reading reviews, we picked this place as our Saturday activity during a girls trip. We parked, looked around and assumed we were accidentally at someone's house... then mustered the courage to go inside. Thank goodness we did! We each did a flight. I loved the Chardonnay because it was from steel and not an oak barrel. Red Barron was all of our favorites though. Bring food here! We brought sandwich's from Main Street Market then sat around the fire outside to eat and drink. Out back there are a bunch of cows - the star of the show being Winnie. As we got near the fence she got up and ran to us. She nibbled on my wrist haha but nothing painful, all love. She just wants pets and attention. Great local winery! read more

This place is amazing! It is confusing at first because it is in a gorgeous farmhouse but once you are there you are welcomed by the owner and his precious rescue dog. All the wines are amazing, regardless of your preference for red or white wine. Then you have your pick of rocking chairs, swinging benches or fire pits to relax and enjoy your wine. The view of the Shenandoah Valley is gorgeous too! They space everyone out for COVID and we felt comfortable the entire time. I definitely recommend visiting Castle Vineyard! read more

My fiancé and I stopped into Castle Vineyards on a sunny afternoon over President's Day weekend. We were in Luray for a cabin weekend retreat from the city. Castle Vineyards isn't your typical winery with the large casks and huge tasting room. It's run from a pretty home in Luray by the proprietor, Jeremy and his dog Duke. For $10 you get a tasting of 8 wines from Barren Ridge and a stemless wine glass. As someone who has traveled to Napa and even larger wineries throughout Virginia it was nice to visit a more intimate tasting room. We hung out with the resident pup while sipping a mix of lovely reds and whites. Castle Vineyards should be on your list of places to visit if you find yourself in Luray with a free afternoon. read more

You will laugh and get a history lesson about the McCoy's! He grows the grapes on his land for the winery that makes the wines. Great tastings! I really loved this winery! The outside view is vast and beautiful. There are perfect views of the mountains and a lovely outdoor space that is covered. Plus there are swings! When you drive up you may be a bit confused because the tasting room is inside a house but the living space is separate from the tasting area. The owner is very nice and personable. He was very helpful! The wines were also delicious. I was with a group of women and all of us enjoyed almost every wine. We ended up getting a bottle of wine and a bottle of red and sitting outside for quite a while. Important note that they aren't made there, it's like a tasting room for a winery that's in southern VA. If you have more than 5 people on a busy day I would probably call ahead to make sure there is space for a tasting before going. If you are not doing tastings then that's probably not necessary.
