Such a great little place to visit! I rented a cabin in the area as a quarantine getaway. We arrived at river hill and there was just 1 other group that was finishing up as we arrived. We parked and hung out outside until they were done -- the grounds has tables and seating outdoors. Once we got in, Fred gave us great service. His wife was also there, caring for the horses so we didn't get to interact with her as much. We learned about the distillery and the different whiskey/bourbon they had. We tried them all, and he even made some mixed drink shots. This was perfect to understand what flavors go good with each drink. We spent maybe 30 minutes here or so, and bought a few bottles to take home with us. read more

This place is great! We met owners Amy (I believe was her name) and Fred. Amy did our wine tasting. Their wines are very pleasant and light, all fruit wines. They are working on a sweet potato wine which sounds super interesting but wasn't ready yet :-( Then Fred took over for the Distillery tasting. He was awesome! Has whiskey, bourbon and a peach moonshine. Everything tasted great! Pricing of products was reasonable and we left with several bottles. They live on a farm there and you can also buy portions of beef if you would like. Would go back in a heartbeat and could hang with Fred all day! read more

This distillery was so lovely! My brother and I stopped here before we left Luray the other day. The owners were so friendly and kind, and all the wines and the moonshine I tasted were delicious. The moonshine was so much smoother and better quality than the touristy distilleries I've been to in Tennessee. My brother bought their whiskey, and he said it's delicious as well. The location was beautiful as well. They grow their own ingredients, and the distillery was right on their farm. Next time I come to visit Shenandoah National Park, I'm definitely coming back here! read more

River Hill Distillery has been on the radar for six years, yet still has multiple surprises for you. Walking up to the front door, you might encounter Amy. Amy will walk you through several delightful wines made with locally grown produce and crafted with care. Yes, WINE! Turns out that River Hill Distillery is also a bit of a winery. All of it was delightful, but the surprise hit, at least for our taste buds was the sweet potato wine. I had to ask Amy twice to make sure I had heard her properly. Sweet potato! Once Amy got through with us, it was Fred's turn to delight us. Wielding a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm, Fred explained everything from how much corn he is able to grow, where and how he malts the corn and barley he uses, to each step in the distillation process. My 4 stars is as much about the tour as the whisky. I'm not a big fan of corn whisky, but I loved hearing Fred explain his process. He even has his old still on display (which he only replaced 6 months ago), which isn't much more than a tank with a copper pipe coming out of it held up by a coat hanger! The whisky was very smooth & pale, almost vodka-like. And at 100-proof, it had a punch. The bourbon was lightly smoked. We had a 3rd sample of the whisky mixed with apple cider & a dash of cinnamon and that was good. They also have some wine, mostly made from fruit but one with Niagara grapes (white wine). The Niagara was a porch sipping wine; nothing fancy but gets the job done. Most of the fruit wines were sold out, but I did like the peach wine.' The distillery is super small; they only produce about 22 gallons a month. They also sell beef and other farm meats. I definitely recommend a tour and sampling. read more

Fred and his team are so hospitable that you find yourself supporting his small business even if you are not a drinker of whiskey or bourbon. Upon walking in, we were given a small sampling of their fruit wines. They were so yummy, just the right amount of sweetness on a dreary afternoon. After our sweet wine tasting, Fred took us on a short yet educational tour of his distillery. He explained the product, the process and taught even the most knowledgable folks a few new things. After a brief eduction and tour(no heavy walking involved so please do the tour), we had an opportunity to taste corn whiskey and 2 types of bourbon. Fred is so great with people and his love for his trade was evident in the tastings and tour. Yes, we walked away with a few bottles and hoped to be back for more. The property is home to a bunch of horses and cattle. The tasting room is small yet cozy. The tastings are complimentary. It looks usual farm when we drove up to but there are friendly and nice people inside. My husband liked their whiskeys. I tried peach wine which uses 50lbs to make one case so it was very peachy but not too sweet. They use all the ingredients from their farm, which I liked. They may not be able to mail their alcohol to outside VA due to the destination regulations but it's worth trying their tastings. The master there will not disappoint you. You have to drive through a neighborhood that turns into a farm to get to River Hill, but it is well worth tracking down. It is a pretty small operation as distilleries go, but the owners are really down to earth and enthusiastic. Pop is happy to give a tour of the unassuming place: there is the tap room, and the small room behind it is the distillery. "This is my vat, those over there are my barrels." The bourbon and corn whiskey he makes are all worth picking up. If they aren't the best you've had, you will appreciate the taste of down home honesty. My wife was happy to chat with Mom and sample the fruity wines they sell (yes, including Sweet Potato.) I find those type of wines good for desserts or pancakes, but my wife likes the occasional spritzer. They were out of one that my wife selected, but she got a kick out of watching Pop decant her bottle directly from a barrel, and he let her label it and put the seal over the cork. The property itself is pretty large, and they do a number of other things aside from the distillery. You can buy meat at the counter with your wine, and they also board horses and I understand they have a shooting range. This is a place you want to visit just so you can recognize it when some author inevitably includes it as a setting in a novel. read more

A fantastic, off the beaten path, family-owned and operated farm and distillery in Luray, VA. They grow their own corn for their horses and cattle and save some to make whiskey and bourbon. They also make lovely dessert wines from apples and berries, as well as, sell beef products. Their distillery is in one small building which is three signs away from the main road. You'll think you're going too far, but just have faith and you'll see the signs showing you where to go. It's absolutely worth a visit if you want to take a day trip out of D.C.--it's only two hours away and an idyllic drive. Amy and Fred Foley warmly welcomed us in. We sat at the bar and chatted with Amy while we waited for the next tour of the distillery. She poured us samples of the apple and berry dessert wines. The apple was lightly sweet and crisp, very nice for a warm summer day. The berry wine was like sangria, just yummy! I ended up buying a bottle for later! About 10-15 minutes later, we were invited to tour the distillery and see how they make their small batches of un-aged and aged whiskey and bourbon. The tour was 15 minutes with tastings at the end. This tour is very low-key. You'll learn how to make small batch whiskey with traditional methods. They use local goods throughout and it was fascinating to see craft whiskey and bourbon being made. They hand-bottle and label their whiskey, bourbon, and wine. If you're looking for a high-end, whiskey processing factory experience...where everyone wears uniforms and tastings occur in wood-paneled rooms with leather chairs...you will be disappointed. Their un-aged whiskey was great when mixed as an apple pie cocktail--we were treated to a tasting of that neat to start. The bourbon was my favorite and I bought a small bottle of that too (and I'm not even a whiskey or bourbon aficionado). My boyfriend bought their "100% Corn Bourbon Whiskey", made from corn grown on their farm, which was aged for 8-months in charred oak barrels. This experience was the highlight of our day trip to Luray to see the caverns. The greatest distillery I have been to in awhile. The location is on a farm with gravel road. You would not even know it was here unless you used your GPS. We were greeted, when we came in with great hospitality. They had a variety of liquors in there and we were offered samples to try before we made are purchase. Even the initial finding of the place was interesting, as it sat in the back of a farm, at the end of a dirt road, which we found to be curious. It was a much smaller operation than we had seen before, but it made the experience that much better. Fred was super sweet, friendly, and knowledgeable. It made the tour very personal, and we were not disappointed. We got to try 4 different whiskeys, and our favorites were definitely the bourbon and 100 bourbon whiskey (their special, which we got a bottle of). We tried their wines as well, and they were good, but a little too sweet for us, as we aren't huge sweet wines fans. So keep that in mind when you come for the wine. Was a little reluctant as the picture looked like a shed. The real deal is a bit more spacious, and the hospitality was superb. Just finished a bit of River Hill in myRiver Hill rocks glass... I was so impressed not only did I buy a bottle of bourbon and a little of the corn whiskey, but also a little River Hill swag. My wife purchased some mixed berry wine, so we were both happy. My husband and I had some time to kill before a wedding. We stumbled upon this place and Fred gave a lovely tour. After all the commercialized distilleries on the Bourbon Trail it's nice to have an intimate conversation on how they make their bourbon. We were able to try several wines and delicious whiskeys. Fred even made some of his special cordials for us. It makes a whiskey margarita which I hope to make for myself. I was also impressed by their wines. Usually I'm a bold, earthy wine person and never thought Sweet Potato Wine could be a thing, but I've tried it and enjoyed it! Their wines are not too sweet and have a great fruity sensation. I look forward to having the sweet potato wine with thanksgiving and for a tasty hot toddy. We bought some wine and whiskey and are very happy with our experience. read more

Fantastic tour and tastings of the whiskey and wines! We were visiting from out of town and found River Hill on Yelp, going during the listed Saturday hours. There was a regular stream of customers, some coming in just to purchase whiskey, other first-timers like ourselves there for a tour. Tours are not scheduled, but given informally whenever people arrive interested to learn more about the whiskey making process. We were very impressed that most of the ingredients (including fruits in the wines) come from the family's farm or are locally sourced from the Shenandoah Valley area. The wine was fresh and fruity (made with 100% local, fresh fruit, pure cane sugar, and no additives/coloring)! We ordered 2 bottles of the peach wine, and they bottled one for us when we ordered! There is also reasonably priced beef and steaks available (frozen) from cattle raised on the farm. All of the staff (the family that owns and operates the farm) were friendly and very knowledgeable about the wines, whiskeys, beef, etc. Definitely recommend if you are visiting the area! read more

We arrived at River Hill Distillery right at 4:30pm on Saturday. Our group, a total of four of us, were worried that they would be closing soon and we may just be able to look around the front shop. To our surprise and luck, Frank was at the front of the shop and just about to show a few guests around the whiskey distilling process. Frank walked us through the history of his distilling, what got him started, and the different liquors he bottled. He allowed us to taste a few different whiskeys, bourbons, and mixed drinks he preferred. Following this, Amy walked us through a few fruit wines they were currently selling seasonally (I ended up purchasing the sweet potato and mixed berry wines for a perfect summer combo). In sum, River Hill Distillery is wonderfully Shenandoah. The owners were welcoming, flexible, and open to any and all guests, the drinks were great and fair priced, and the location is nothing short of natural beauty. read more

Like other reviewers have stated, he explained the step by step process of making the corn whiskey and bourbon, followed by tastings of the same. Ended up buying a bottle of the corn whiskey, especially since it made for an excellent apple pie cocktail (of which he gave us a taste). The wines they make are fruit based, and the 3 we tasted were super sweet; not quite to my taste. Fred also informed us their liquor may be found in ABC stores.
