This place is a must! When you drive by the homes and horses you wonder if you are going to someone's house and you truly are! This distillery feels like you are in Fred's home. You are welcomed warmly then ushered back for your private tour where Fred explains the process. Once you are done with the short tour, you get a tasting of corn whisky and bourbon. Then you get the delicious "apple pie" mixture. To top it all off, they make their own wines from the fruit on the farm. The blackberry and strawberry were to die for. Maybe it was the delicious drinks, but you leave feeling like you just hung out with some friends. read more

Don't be fooled, a dozen miles or so outside of town is River Hill Distillery and Farm. Originally planning on going to a winery, we decided to stop here instead. Wow! What a great tour. After reading other reviews we decided to call and see if we could visit on a day when they weren't scheduled to be open. The owner answered and said "Sure, come on over!" Based on a working farm, the owner has only had a license to distill for 3 years but appeared to have a lengthy and extensive knowledge of the process of producing craft whiskeys (:-)). We were shown the whole process from corn, malting, fermenting through to distilling the finished spirits using his commercial and home made stills. Tasting the 100% corn whisky and 8 month aged bourbon was a treat, as were the wonderful apple pie and apple turnover mixed drinks. After that we tried the fruit wines - gorgeous and not too sweet. I loved the apple wine, others appreciated the peach and mixed berry wines. We really enjoyed visiting as did previous guests (2 of whom, Tim and Tickle from The Moonshiners TV show had signed the wall of Fred's still room). read more

I was only able to make it through Luray on a Sunday so I called the phone number on the website and Fred was glad to have us come down for a tour and tasting. This was a one stop shop, I left with multiple bottles of wine, spirits, and multiple cuts of beef! I was super impressed with the Bourbon and some of the smoothest corn whiskey I've ever had. Like some of the other reviewers, I was extremely impressed how much of the ingredients for their spirits were from right there on their farm! We've tried RiverHill down at the Fredericksburg Brewfest and couldn't find it, so we came directly to the source! Fred and Amy were terrific. Fred loves his whiskey! Lovely place run by lovely people! Tour was given by the owner who answered every question (no matter how random) with a smile and a laugh. Whiskey and bourbon were great, reasonably priced. Stopped by this beautiful little distillery on a Saturday afternoon visiting Luray. The location is stunning and owners are incredibly warm and welcoming. The operation is small, but really cool. What a fantastic place to stop and try the whiskey and wine. We received a personal tour of how the owner makes his whiskey/bourbon. He was very knowledgeable, funny and answered all our questions. This place was a hidden gem. We learned so much about the distillery process of making whiskey and our tour guide, Fred, made it very fun. It wasn't a formal or rehearsed tour which made it that much more genuine and you can tell the family really loves what they are doing. If you are any where near Luray this is a place you simply must visit! I'm not even a whiskey or bourbon drinker and I've been there twice and will definitely visit again! (my husband loves their bourbon and whiskey!) The whole family is so friendly and welcoming. Fred is awesome - a great tour guide, so knowledgeable about what they do and happy to share this knowledge! The wines are right in the middle of sweet and dry. I am not a sweet wine fan and I really enjoy their wines.. they use fruit grown there on their farm with no additives. Plan a visit soon!! read more

Doesn't seem like much when you walk in but just give it a chance. The small tour is wonderful and you get a feel for the history of the distillery. The bourbon and the 100 proof barreled corn whisky are great. The tasting is free so you have nothing to loose! read more

We just visited the distillery today. Loved loved loved the experience! If you're looking for your run of the mill tour (like every other distillery or winery), don't bother. You will have a small town, personal, AMAZING experience. The owner himself gave us a tour and answered all of our laymen questions. We ended up buying a bottle of corn and bourbon whiskey and a bottle of apple and concord grape wine. The wine is REALLY sweet - I'm looking forward to using it as a desert wine. The place is small, so don't bring a big group unless you make prior arrangements. The tour itself takes about 30 minutes. If you're in the area, be sure to stop by - it exceeded both my husband and my's expectations. read more

Wonderful fun place. Definitely worth the stop. Close to Luray Caverns so a good stop after the caverns.

I called ahead to see if someone would be around outside of business hours for me to come by and Fred was more than willing to accommodate me. He gave me a tour of the facility and let me sample his whiskies and wines, all of which were great. I picked up a bottle of bourbon as a gift for my dad and it was an instant hit. If the spirits offered here were merely serviceable, then it would still be worth the trip to meet Fred, the owner/operator, and get the tour of the small building within spitting distance of his home where he crafts his liquor. He's such a warm, inviting man who is more than happy to show you around and chat about malting corn, fermenting mash, and how his new still differs from the old one. It's would be worth the trip just to stand outside, staring out at the mountains as his horses lazily crop the grass. It was made so much more worth it to discover that he offers up a incredibly smooth, sweet corn liquor that goes down far too easily, and then he mixes you up something he calls an apple pie. Nice tour, very informative and good whiskey at the end. The owners/distillers are super nice people. The wines weren't particularly suited to my taste (as they were sweet and fruity) but the bourbon was excellent for a Virginia whiskey. And considering how much the nearby Copper Fox charges for samples of its overpriced whiskeys, this place is an awesome bargain!! read more
