Enchiladas, contact info, and cooking instructions, etc.

We did our rounds hitting Iowa's Largest Arts and Crafts Show on a Friday evening at the Iowa State Fairgrounds, and the 13th annual Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival on a Saturday before all this Covid-19 mess started... There were a lot of food related highlights to that weekend, but one of the standouts was a vendor at the Arts and Crafts show who I don't recall seeing there before. Erick's Enchiladas. The owner was manning his booth and offering samples. A very personable guy who was pitching his enchiladas, flour chips, salsa etc. to the people passing by. His permanent spot is in Omaha but he did this show in Des Moines and said he's planning on being at the November show too. If you happen to be from Iowa and going to the Des Moines Arts and Crafts shows after this mess clears up... You might want to find him there and take home some of his food. The enchiladas are legit and the verde salsa has a nice little burn to it. The green is definitely my favorite. Everything is individually wrapped and frozen to carry home. I want to say I paid $15 for six big enchiladas. The meat inside is precooked and he provides instructions on how to "cook" them at home. It's good stuff.

Amazing enchiladas! The beef ones are my favorite. A+++++ Would like to order personally from you if Wenninghoffs is out

Really wanted to love this but I just don't. Super doughey somehow and bland. Tastes like play-dough surprisingly. Bought 6 threw 5.5 away. The red salsa is nice though.

Prices at farmer's market, not sure if it's cheaper/more expensive than it would be at their actual location.

Freakin' love their salsa verde. Bought 15oz of it today at the Aksarben farmer's market for $5. They always have samples of their beef enchilada at the farmer's market and I got one before for $3, slathering on that salsa. Little pricey for an enchilada, but it's yummy. Haven't been to their actual store yet, although I did pass by it once when I was heading to Olsen Bake Shop. Asked about their hours at the store, and Erick said M-F 11AM-5PM, and they have farmer's market on Saturday and Sunday, and are sometimes at the store after the farmer's market (give them a call to check). Google says they're open on Saturday from 11-5 as well and closed Sunday. Probably their regular hours when there's no farmer's market.

Wonderful green salsa!!

Making your own enchiladas is messy and hard. And unless you're some kind of enchilada master, you aren't going to come close to making the amazing enchiladas you can get here. I love their chips and salsa so much that my wife gets jealous. Catch them at the Aksarben Farmer's market, but get there early before they run out of chips!

Some of the best enchiladas around. I've had them for over 15 years and they never disappoint.

Good food. Red salsa is yummy! We tried all four flavors of enchiladas. Buy a bunch so you can freeze them for a quick weeknight meal.

The enchiladas were delicious and a good size. The tamales were kind of small, but still delicious.

They make the best salsa verde and pico de gallo around and I've had both in CA, CO, NM, you name it.

El Milagro Mexican Bar & Grill - Birria Tacos

El Milagro Mexican Bar & Grill

It's super cute inside, with so many bright colors, neat Día de los Muertos murals along the walls, colorful pendants strung on top of the dining area, and a very cool bar with a patterned, arched shelves. Even the dishes and cups are fabulous, with earthenware mugs, blue Talavera style dishes and bowls, and even branded El Milagro margarita glasses. Now more importantly, the FOOD is just as good as the decor and the dishware. They use extra high quality ingredients, and everything is always served hot and fresh. We have had the birria, nachos, street tacos, flautas, and so many other things when we branch out and try something new. Their drink options are also great, with strong margaritas, crisp cervesas, and tasty cocktails. The service is always fantastic, and they are always hopping with customers, so you know you found a good spot. Best of all, you get pretty large portions, and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg like some of the newer Mexican restaurants in town. Next time you're thinking about heading to the Texas Roadhouse area, skip the Roadhouse and try El Milagro instead! I guarantee you will not regret your decision.

However, unlike other Mexican restaurants you do have to pay for additional salsa. I went with a house margarita and the benveza beer, and both were good and cold. I went with the steak picaditas. I hadn't had them before but they were similar to a torta, except the base is a very thick corn tortilla. I like the flavor of the steak, tortilla, sour cream and veggies combined. My husband got the birria platter and liked it. It's very similar to Javi's birria. Overall everything was good.

This last visit they had the entire restaurant decorated for Valentine's Day coming up. But, besides the additional decorations the overall vibe is what you would expect for a Mexican restaurant but more. The service has been friendly and fast! The original Margarita is very good and for the price its about 3 servings. The complementary chips & salsa is great and more of a forgotten service nowadays, but great to see that Alegre is still doing it. The homemade tortilla chips are so good so be careful to not fill up on these before the main entrees. Kendra got the Chile Verde which was massive and was enough food for leftovers the next day. And, I had the Ceviche Sampler which is new and definitely worth every penny! It's hard to find restaurants that have ceviche on the menu, but this has been one of my favorites if you love seafood and a repeater for me! If your looking for more of an upscale $$ Mexican restaurant with great food, service and ambiance it's hard to beat El Muchacho Alegre.

The menu is full of classic and traditional Mexican cuisine. I tried the pollo Puebla and it was pretty good! Thick, juicy chicken covered in fresh veggies. The beans were good, the rice was decent. They have a good selection of drinks too, for a very reasonable price. They have a good happy hour too (Tues-thurs, 3-7PM). The margaritas looked really good. I liked the wide open seating and the beautiful bar. They had a sweet stage and DJ booth too

The place is very large and open, so you don't feel like you're walking on top of others and can have conversations without feeling like you need to yell to be heard or whisper to not be overheard. Their chips and salsa were delicious. Salsa is house made and the chips are fried to order. You get a first basket for free, but the second we had to pay for- be aware. Their tacos are amazing. I had three street tacos and then two basic hard and soft tacos. I started with the basics, and was very impressed. The meat was nice and flavorful and somehow seemed....soft? I was initially bummed looking at them because I thought "just lettuce and meat?" But there's some fantastic cheese hidden under the lettuce. The shells were the perfect soft and a crunch. I would love to just have a few of these for the meal and be good! I had the three street tacos- steak, pastor, and carnitas. I was pleased with all three! They were flavorful, moist, and the shells were once again perfect. I very much enjoyed the steak and they had just the right amount of crisp with all of the flavor. You can tell that all of these were made fresh to order. Their house margs were wonderful. They weren't too sweet and you got more than you imagined. When we got the bill, it's noted that there's a discount if you pay with cash, but no added fee for paying with a card; so keep that in mind.
