Love that Epif has evolved into vegan brunch service, Friday to Monday. I tried one of their weekly specials, this time biscuits and sausage gravy and potatoes which was cozy and rich and flavorful. I love that they make their own sausage and it was on point and it was one of the better vegan biscuits I've had too. They have excellent coffee, which I was super happy to enjoy. Intimate space without being tiny - plenty of tables with led candles and low light - great for date night. A little on the loud side, we tried to maneuver for a table not directly under a speaker. Food is shareable plates and worth trying many things and sharing. Two of us had two drinks (a cocktail and a cocktail), shared an order of Causa, one baked empanada, the caprese sopaipillas, and a flan for dessert. Didn't seem like a ton on the plates but very filling and we left happy. The causa was a standout. Cold mashed potatoes filled with vegan cream cheese, tempeh, and red peppers? Sounds weird but tasted amazing, rich and creamy. Caprese sopaipillas were also noteworthy. Nothing like I expected, but warm and hearty and intensely flavored with basil pesto. The empanada was huge and a lot of pastry to filling ratio. The salsas are tough to choose - I really wanted one of each to sample! We settled on the verde which was spectacular. This was my first stop on our Portland trip. I was super excited to try a Peruvian vegan place! The building was adorable, and I loved that the tree was growing into the building. The service wasn't bad, but nothing to write home about. Part of my planning and timing was to hit happy hour, which I could've sworn I had read about on the website, but when I asked about it I was told they no longer did that. (I just now looked at the website and no longer see it there, so likely I planned this stop out in advance and missed the update). The food was really good, just a bit pricey for the amount you got... which was not much. The asparagus soup was very flavorful. We also shared a baked empanada and Caprese Sopaipillas. I usually cook vegan or plant-based at home, so it's a rare experience for me to explore vegan dining. I prefer to enjoy well-cooked meats and diverse cuisines worldwide with non-plant products that I cannot cook at home. However, Epif has changed my perspective and bias towards my dining habits. I recently spent a few hours here enjoying the tapas-style menu with a date, and we were both blown away by the experience. First, the outdoor patio is private, adorable, cozy, and quiet from the busy street. The staff is very attentive and ready to share recommendations and ideas for course progression, which I highly recommend if you, like me, are new to dining here. The menu is short and sweet, just like Sabrina Carpenter's, so be ready for fun. There is also a good happy hour, so start your evening between 4 and 6 p.m. for extra discounts. I started with a glass of the sparkling Chilean Rosé, my first encounter with País grapes. We then ventured through several options for food, but my favorite has to have been the unique potato starter and the sweet enchilada dessert with local non-dairy ice cream. I wished I could have spent the entire evening here, splurging with friends and enticing my taste buds with new adventures. Yum! Love this place. Plenty of outdoor seating which I really appreciate. Before I went vegan many yrs ago my friend used to make a big deal of her yearly haul of Pisco from Peru and have a pisco sour night (with egg). I got real excited when I saw this place just walking by since I haven't had a pisco sour in a decade on this account! I found out from the server that Chilean pisco sours (hopefully I got this distinction right) don't usually use egg, but that they have also done Peruvian style that could I use aquafaba etc. Long vegan nerd out post to say a) aquafaba or not having a pisco sour really brought be back and b) the food was so tasty and inventive. I also eat gluten free and I was pleased to see not only were there options that fit my diet but that weren't just replacing bread for gf bread for example but did apple slices to eat with vegan cerviche - a much healthier and more exciting option! I came here for dinner on a Saturday night and there was no wait. This place has been on my to try list for the longest time and I'm glad I was finally able to make it. The menu is designed as tapas to share with the portions being good to share between two people so you can try many dishes. My favorites were the sandwich and empanadas. The sauces accompanying the empanadas were amazing and I can't wait to have these again. I would skip the tofu and potatoes dish next time as I thought it was a bit plain. The drink menu is also quite extensive and I very much enjoyed my mezcal cocktail while my partner enjoyed his. The food is absolutely spectacular! After hearing tons of good things about this place we tried it out with our vegan friends. We were not disappointed. Every single item was absolute perfection! We were a group of four (plus a child) and we ordered five empanadas, the salad, soup, two orders of sopapillas and two sandwiches. We followed that with their passion fruit and strawberry cream empanada dessert. I don't know if it was because we were hungry, but every single item was the best we could imagine it to be. The salad was crunchy and fresh. The sopapillas were beyond great - being from New Mexico, I'm used to a different kind of sopapilla. But Epif's version incorporating pumpkin was just astounding and I think I could have easily eaten five of those things! The sandwiches were extremely filling and screamed of freshness especially with the avocado and the green beans. The desserts were things of beauty - the turmeric ice cream that accompanied the dessert empanada was a true star. I cook with turmeric a lot and a pinch of it goes a long way. I often find places overdo the turmeric but Epif knows exactly how to use it. I think their ice cream might have been the most delicious ice cream I've ever had! This is my second time here. My first was 2 summers ago and I loved it! I couldn't wait to come back! They were on a wait for a table 40 mins before close so we opted to do take out. After waiting a bit for food they said that a few tables were about to leave, and if we wanted to sit and eat, we could! So we did that. Ordered 2 drinks and enjoyed our food there! It was nice to taste it fresh rather than to-go. It takes about 20mins to drive there and back home. The Empanadas could use a lil more filling, dough is a bit dry. Overall is like a 3/3.5 out of 5 I'd say. None of the salsa went well with the Empanadas. Maayybbee the amarillo with Empanada C...but overall ehhh. My favorite dish out of all of them was the quiche. It was the most savory and the crust was nicely layered and crispy. It really was dense rather than fluffy but the vegan egg was good (if you've had follow your heart vegan egg...its similar in texture and flavor). All their dishes were either too sweet or too sour....there was no in between? Like none of the dishes weren't too balanced...that maybe the way Peruvian food is supposed to taste like? I don't remember it being like that when I studied abroad there. The mulled wine type cocktail (Llama mama) was very nice. It was cold so it warmed me right up! It was perfectly spiced and not too sweet. I had a sip of the hot toddy type drink. It was a lil sweeter than one would normally be but uts similar enough. The Pisco in it was a nice touch in replace of whiskey, it was smoother. Image a hot toddy but less of a bite and more lemony and sweet. The crust of the dessert tasted good but didn't go well with the texture of the cheesecake. It was taken to-go to be enjoyed at home so... the cheesecake may have "melted" a little, like got a bit too soft. But it was rich and creamy as a cheesecake should be. It was very chocolate-y but not overwhelming. Service was great for being how busy they were! Outdoor dining ONLY with only 7/8 tables. Five 4 tops + two or three 2 tops. I have never been inside, but sitting outside was refreshing. Very limited seating, though. However, the food was the star. Absolutely delicious. My cream cheese empanada with my choice of sauce was a great start. Then my small plate of maple and ginger glazed portabella mushrooms over polenta was the last to hit the spot. Everything, very delicious. Also, they claim to be a "Pisco" bar.And they offer a "Pisco flight" of both large and small ambitions. So, I imbibed on two pisco cocktails: Pisco sour and a Pisco Manhattan. Well executed. Everything together, I would go so far to say that this is my favourite vegan diner. I'm definitely not vegan, but my friend is, and she really wanted to check this place out after reading all the glowing reviews. So off we went to Epif! We parked the next street over, as there isn't much around the building -- once entering, the décor of Epif is so warm and delightful, you immediately fall in love. It makes you feel like you're in a South American café as opposed to an actual restaurant. Our server was super sweet -- she recommended the mocktails since neither of us drink that much, really. I tried the Raspberry Sparkly, which came with a lime. Delicious! For my entrée, I wasn't super hungry, so I ordered the sopaipillas con queso, and for dessert, the chocolate canela. The Sopaipillas are a lot heavier than they look, and they come with a delicious vegan cheese sauce that is great for the dipping. Outside is crunchy and crisp, inside is all doughy and savory. Pure bliss! My favorite was the chocolate canela, however I have to warn you, it is FILLING and so, so rich. You wouldn't even be able to tell the difference between this vegan cake and a regular chocolate cheese cake! And the flavor was so rich and delicious -- if you are a chocolate fan, this menu item is definitely for you. I recently went to Epif for brunch with a friend. The entrance to the restaurant was a beautiful door. I just loved the ambiance! There were a lot of choices for brunch, and it was hard to decide. I went with the biscuits and gravy and a side of chickpea scramble. I loved the biscuits and gravy..one of the best vegan made I've had! Well vegan or not...one of the best I've had! I wasn't a big fan of the chickpea scramble. I would have preferred a tofu scramble. I realize others would be thrilled with the chickpea scramble since soy is off their diets. I did take home my leftover chickpea scramble to make breakfast burritos the next day..and I have to say it was delicious! What a unique concept - a vegan Southern American restaurant! I wasn't sure it would work for me, but it did! I'm not vegetarian or vegan but I still greatly enjoyed the experience here at Epif. It has got such a cozy and warm interior that it just welcomes you in. They have so many drink options it was hard to choose, but my sister and I both got Piscos to start. She got the Chilean one and I the Peruvian. I enjoyed mine more, but hers was by no means bad. We also ended up sharing a Bubbly Basil simply because we were curious about what it would taste like. I loved it! For food, we stared with an order of Causa to share, and it was so beautifully plated. I couldn't tell it was vegan by any means and it was an interesting and tasty dish. We also order four empanadas to share, one of A, one of B, and two of C, the special of the night. A was a cheesy chive empanada, B was a veggie pesto empanada, and C was a mushroom cream and soy chorizo empanada. We agreed that C was our favorite, followed by A then B. Hearing what people around the restaurant ordered and said, it seemed like that was something most agreed on. We also got them with two salsas, the zanahoria and the amarillo - both were fine but I preferred the empanadas without any salsa. Finally for dessert we got their chocolate canela cheesecake with a raspberry drizzle and it was perfect for sharing since it was very rich. Overall I greatly enjoyed the food and the ambiance. It's hard to judge the food without comparing it to the actual empanadas eaten whilst living abroad, especially since my favorites were always meat based. Either way, I'd recommend this place, but be aware it's not all that cheap, even if you share. read more

I was specifically looking for a vegan South American restaurant when I first moved to Portland and this is the only place I have found that I absolutely love. The food is amazing - you would never even know it's vegan (for those of you who are weary of trying vegan food)! Their menu is on the small side but mighty! Everything I've ever had has been great. The fried mozzarella empanadas are my favorite. I have also had the baked empanadas, Huancaina, ceviche & chocolate canela cheesecake. I recommend it all! They also have great wine - I had a Malbec from Argentina. Their non-alcoholic beverages are also very tasty (tropic topic). We shared potato dish, an excellent beet preparation as well as lightly pickled peppers. All excellent. The empanadas has rather less filling and more crust than I prefer but that was offset by the exceptionally tasting and quite complex and subtle salsa. The sinks were interesting though a Piso sour made without sacrificing an actual egg wasn't quite what I expected. But fear not, there's wine and other piso-based as well as non-alcoholic options aplenty. Our server suggested 2 - 4 portions per person. We found 2 rack to be sufficient for a group of light eaters. When you are in Portland you have to do the Portland thing, and with so many vegan places in town , there is no escaping going to a vegan restaurant, especially with the eclectic foods being offered. I will admit that I am not a big vegan fan, however I came here with an open mind and an empty stomach.We ordered the ceviche , a wine and a cocktail.The hubby absolutely loved the food , but it was not my cup of tea.I love any and every kind of chips and the too thinly cut Sweet potato chips were just not what I expected when I saw them on the menu. This may be my last dinner in Portland as I am leaving tomorrow around 8:30 PM for San Francisco. I am so happy that I got recommendations to eat here. This vegan restaurant has the most amazing South American food that is inspired from the Andes. I ordered a non-alcoholic drink, a small plate, a medium plate and a grande plate and then I finished off with the most luscious dessert. I am so glad I came here. This meal was simply outrageous. Out On A Limb Epic meal from Epif. Serving up veganized dishes inspired by the Andes region of South America. Owners, Nicolle Dirks, and Pepe Arancibia designed the building /space themselves, and it shows. Super cute space! The flow and vibe of the place feels right. Lighting was low and romantic. Our sever was extremely helpful and knowledgeable about everything on the menu; along with the owners and history of the restaurant. She was a pleasure to be around. I started the experience off with a cocktail, the Charlie Peace: Old Forester Bourbon, Fernet Branca, Amaro CioCiaro, Luxardo Maraschino, Angostura Bitters. It was perfection in a glass. We ordered the slow baked sweet potato chips and salsa for an appetizer. These were so good! You have a choice of 3 different salsas to choose from (we picked the Ají Amarillo: Yellow chile, yellow bell pepper, garlic, onion, maple syrup). Next up we had the Sopa: Cauliflower soup served with toasted almonds. This was creamy, deliciousness in a bowl. I licked mine! We spilt a few Empanadas: Squash, sun dried tomatoes, and basil. The dough was tender flaky goodness. We shared the Causa: Mashed potato rolls lined with vegan cream cheese, red bell pepper, asparagus, and chives and served with a Kalamata olive sauce. This was served like sushi rolls, and disappeared just as fast. Finishing the meal, we indulged in a piece of Chocolate Canela: Chocolate-cinnamon cheesecake served with chocolate sauce. After dinner, I went back to the kitchen and thanked the chef for the delicious meal. He was friendly and had nice energy. Parking is on street. A lovely little place we stumbled across when searching for a happy hour after a long work week. It was my first time enjoying South American inspired cuisine. I was not disappointed. The food menu offers vegan, gluten free, soy free, sugar free, and nut free options! There is a full bar, but they offer the largest selection of Pisco in PDX (Pisco is a type of grape brandy), so of course pisco cocktails are the house specialty. We sat at the bar and started out with a lime and a romero, (neither contain pisco, but they sounded delish and at only $4 we couldn't pass them up). The happy hour cocktails are premixed, but both were still well balanced. For my second drink I decided on a vegan Chilean pisco sour ($8) that used a type of filtered legume liquid in lieu of egg whites. It foamed up just as beautifully and was surprisingly just as delicious! For snacks we ordered the happy hour sweet potato chips ($4), the papas ($5), and the small sopa ($6). We also ordered the pimentones rellenos ($9) off the regular menu. Although all uniquely delicious, my favorite by far was the cauliflower soup. It was oh so creamy and topped with toasted almonds that added a perfect nuttiness and crunch. I could have ordered bowl after bowl of that stuff! Seriously SO good! They were sweet potato chips with dill on them and they went great with their amazing verse salsa. That salsa wasn't like your normal salsa; it was thicker and blended rather than having chunks in it - the flavor was amazing! We also split the Quinoa bowl and the Chacarero. Both were very tasty. The Quinoa bowl was filling yet light, very fresh tasting with the herbs they used. The Chacarero has a great bun, soft yet had some crisp to it. It was filling and had a great sauce on it.
