Walked in with a group of friends and we received an immediate eye roll and head shake from the bartender. We split up to sit around the bar and at one table as we were told not to block the walkway...fine. Then waited, waited and waited. Finally drink orders were taken. After another long wait, 3 drinks out of 10 were presented and we were told to pay and then we were cut off because someone in the group had been rude by being impatient? Spoiler alert: no one said anything to the bartender outside of asking how to order. We hurried up and left, leaving unfinished drinks on the bar. Needless to say we won't be back. read more

All these comments about bad service did scare us a little but my experience was pretty great specially considering I went at peak weekend hours and still got seated and served on time . We picked bar seats and ordered as soon as we got an opportunity . The staff was kind and sweet and let me try a few different things before I settled on one . My husband also got a cocktail that was not on the menu and it didn't take too long for that either . The place was busy and I did see every single staff member working very hard so please don't be deterred by the wait times as you might get lucky like us . read more

This review is based on the service bit, not the drink quality- why you ask? Walked in almost 30 minutes prior to close and were given the eye roll + "we just did last call". Sorry, you gave us no chance to sample your Attaboy knock off or explain that we'd be gone before you closed. read more

I'm LOLing that this bar is rated as 3.6 stars. Ok here is the deal as a local Portlander. Angel Face may look fancy and cute as hell, but they aren't doing anything fancy. They make damn good classic cocktails. You don't need original fancy cocktails at every bar. What's wrong with just ordering a manhattan, Negroni or dirty martini? They aren't doing a secret menu -- they just want to make your drink how you like. It's what bars have done for hundreds of years. It's cozy, simple, and the absolute damn best martini in town. Absolutely loved my curated drink. I told our server I like tequila, sweet drinks, and don't like acids like orange juice or pineapple juice. They came back with this delicious drink, that was sweet but not too sweet , and still strong!! I was feeling it after one drink but that could also be because I hadn't eaten much that day. One of my friends said she liked spicy margs and the drink they created for her was perfection! I really enjoyed it, it had the perfect hint of spice not overbearing but you knew it was there. Another one of my friends ordered tequila and she said she liked pineapple juice with it. The drink they made her , I even liked it and I don't like pineapple juice. Overall 10/10 experience , we asked our server what was in our drinks and I honestly don't remember any of the ingredients in mine except the "pomegranate" lol. For sure coming back and bringing friends for this cool experience. I think it would be good for a second date because it's a bit intimate--dark and quiet. read more

On a 4-day trip to Portland, this restaurant/bar stood out for all the wrong reasons. I know they used to have no cocktail menu--a nice touch for a bar trying to do customized, bespoke drinks. They've replaced that concept, not with a more traditional drink menu, but with a glossary of at least 100 well-known cocktails that no customer could reasonably sort through. When asked whether the bartender might be willing to do something fun, the server's response was, "We don't do that anymore; pick a drink and let me know when you're ready." Sure, the drinks were totally fine, but this place is now missing what makes a cocktail bar enjoyable: creative drinks, friendly staff, nice ambiance, etc. Additionally, the food was terrible...reminiscent of something you would get from a school cafeteria. Slow, poor quality, and carelessly presented. To cap it off, we were double-charged for one of the food items. The explanation was that their system has a glitch that double charges for this particular item. It was unclear why, if the glitch is known about, it's on the customer to find and point out rather than being dealt with automatically. By the way, Too Soon directly next door is the opposite of all of the above: phenomenal cocktails creatively presented, the nicest staff you've ever encountered, and a thoughtful food menu. Since it was our first time the server was super helpful & explained to us how it works. I love places like this! The name is ironic. Some of the rudest service I've ever encountered, and I've lived all over the country. Ten years living in NYC and I've never been told to "have a nice life" by a bartender. Completely stupefied from the first to the last. Ready to not be met with eye contact from staff upon sitting down? Ready to ask where the bathroom is and be answered in the most intensely demeaning method possible? Ready to have your credit card sit on the bar for several minutes after your glasses are empty, then say "we're ready for our check whenever you have a minute" and get a death stare from the bartender? Hard to express the VIBE in words but it's downright distasteful. I vented quietly to my partner about how I was feeling and then he told me notes might have been passed behind me. Ready to feel like you're in high school and someone thinks they're the cool kid? Somebody please invent a word for the service worker equivalent of a Karen. That's this spot. Will never return. We enjoy coming here when we're in the neighborhood for drinks. I think they have small plates but honestly I've never checked before. We always sit at the bar and I love watching them make concoctions. They don't have a menu so I usually just tell them an idea of what I usually drink or the kind of liquor I'm feeling that night. So it was explained to me they have a huge list of spirits and can make any cocktails we want and/or have a cocktail made based on what you're seeking. They made our drinks very well, my partner likes ordering a rum old fashioned that's not sweet, and he felt it was made perfectly. I wasn't sure what I wanted besides some citrusy and lemon, and they suggested a French 57, which tasted great and refreshing. To say this place is my favorite cocktail bar in Portland would be the understatement of the millennia. All you tightwad ninnies complaining about the cocktails and service can kick rocks. If you can't handle telling the bartender what kind of spirit and flavors you like, go get drunk at a Red Lobster like you know you really want to. Angel Face is the real deal - the ambiance is killer, every single drink I've ever had there has blown my mind, and I have found the servers to be consistently wonderful over the 50+ times I've gone there. I was robbed but refunded. Bring cash, don't ask for a cocktail menu. Rather, describe what you're wanting in a drink. If only they put that on a sign. Service was pretty minimal. We were met with apathetic expressions. There was a full water glass on the bar before we arrived and when the two of us sat down, they said "we'll get you one more water" . Just got snacks and drinks before dinner res at 7:30, The server was also very un-enthused because we clearly interrupted her eating while sitting at the ADA bar seats. I realized we spent our entire time next to a half empty coffee mug that was likely the precursor to dinner. The POS system was having issues and when we asked for our check the server returned it and stuck in front of my face, wordless, waiting for me to take it while I was clearly enjoying my drink and company. Admittedly, I left a low tip, 10% as I thought saying something would open a can or worms. Days late I noticed the total charge was greater than the total amount I left. I remember because my date and I had a silent stare off due to the low amount. I had to go back in to the restaurant to bring this to their attention as their voicemail didn't work. It took a week plus, phone calls, text messages, and a trip back to correct. Had I not had the silent stare off with my date I probably would have never remembered the total. The bf and I were in the neighborhood little early to meet some friends for dinner later and stopped by at Angel Face for a couple drinks. At first glance this bar looks very posh with a retro feel and has a very speakeasy vibe to it. Their drink menu pretty much lists the different alcohols they have and based on your taste and preference they make the cocktails, which is the coolest part of the place!! For our first drink, the bf got an extra dirty martini and I got a Manhattan. Both our drinks were spot on and pretty strong. For our second drink, I got a drink which was mostly Mezcal with a little bit of fruitiness and the bf got a simile drink, but on the less sweeter side. Overall, the drinks here are pretty awesome and worth every penny! Definitely recommend this place if you're in the mood for a couple strong drinks read more
