This is one of those places that you really want to gatekeep because once everyone finds out how cool it is the charm wears off. It's a downstairs bar with art deco and speakeasy vibes. Picture dark moody lighting with gold and green accents and pinkish colored curtains at the booths. If I lived closer this would be my go to spot. They have a full bar so you can get pretty much whatever you want. They have a few speciality cocktails but most of them were made with gin, not my fav. The drinks during happy hour were really reasonable and the food was priced similar to other restaurants in the area. I had a ham and cheese panini with the pilsner and both were pretty good. The bartender was really nice and made the whole experience easy and enjoyable. Also jello shots for $2. Can't go wrong there! read more

Mame Bar - Ham and cheese panini - Bars Near Me - Portland, Oregon

Mame is a relaxed, understated place to enjoy drinks, quality food, and time with friends. For me, the standout was goat cheese, rolled in black pepper, served with olive oil, garlic, sliced baguette, and olives. It's one of those things that's going to interfere with exploring other things on the menu. Finding elegant comfort food in a low key basement space is delightful. Mame has become my new recommendation for where to meet. read more

Mame bar is a gem. You go downstairs to a Cute speakeasy vibe! Clean inside and has such a cool atmosphere. Bartender was very friendly and helpful, even after a long day. They had an event they were part of earlier and we came when it had wound down. We ordered a "Once in a Blue Moon" based on other Yelpers reviews and it was delish and "I'm your huckleberry" and it was light, fruity and refreshing. They had leftover Jell-O shots from the event with pop rocks and had to try that! It was good, loved the addition of the pop rocks. Last drink of the night was "Oaxacan on Broken Glass" and it was perfectly blended with a hint of the smoke from the Mezcal. Bartender was a great mixologist! Will definitely come back when in Portland! read more

great spot! bartender was amazing and the interior is atmospheric and very cool. can't wait to come back!

A cool underground bar below Hazel Room. The inside is modern and moody with black an green decors. The seating layout is a bit awkward though with a few large booth tables and bar seatings. Hard for a small group to feel comfortable taking up a lot of space. Bartenders were friendly and efficient. Drinks are reasonably priced and they had very tasty paninis. Overall, a fun bar! read more

This was a very chill place to stop in. The dim lit place is cozy and feels very upscale but they had very fair prices. The bar was mostly empty when I was there but we were Informed a dj was going to be playing later that evening. The bar tender was very kind and welcoming. We didn't get any food this time but we'll definitely try a few items next time we drop by. read more

I just need to add one more thing we were there celebrating. And I happen to notice on the chalkboard that they offered pop rocks, Jell-O shots. Well, how could someone say no to that! Matt was so kind that he gave them to us in honor of our celebrating my daughter's cancer survivor. read more

Attended a friend's murder mystery 30th birthday party here and it was quite the perfect Gatsby setting vibes. The bartender was very knowledgeable and friendly and if you like whiskey, order the once in a blue moon! We weren't too hungry, so we ordered the baguette w/ butter and popcorn w/ parmesan and truffle salt. Perfect finger foods while trying to figure out who dunnit! Definitely check this place out! read more

It can get pretty loud inside. And the bartender had a tough time figuring out a mocktail... I ended up with a bubbly water and bitters. Otherwise, a cozy atmosphere with nice appetizers read more

The service and inventive cocktail are fabulous. The bar food (particularly the soups) is a cut above the standard. The location, in the basement of a converted house on Hawthorne is beautifully and has tbe cozy feel of a 1920s speakeasy. I highly recommend it! read more

Just popped in for the first time, unfortunately did not have my phone. .Gorgeous bar from ceiling to floor, including the bathrooms! Service is impeccable, and those drinks! We had the Pretty in Pink which is very refreshing and full of beautiful, pink glitter. For mezcal fans the Oaxacan cocktail is a must, the tajin rim blended with the mezcal is delicious. The glassware and art deco decor transports you right into a sexy speak easy! read more

Great cozy hideaway just steps off Hawthorne. A nicely curated cocktail menu that is executed with great care and attention to detail. A modest food menu (in terms of choices) that is, nonetheless, delicious and satisfying. Rotating desserts are high quality and always difficult to ignore. The staff are just as genuine and friendly - this is a winner, even in such a competitive (for your bar attention) neighborhood. A recent addition to the numerous jewels of east Portland - give it a try! read more

Oh, the Mame Bar. I want you to be my go to bar. Two notes: Vegan jello shots are a snap to make once you get the hang of it. Nobody will miss the ground up animal bones and vegans will be thrilled! Note two: Please consider keeping a jar of good quality instant cocoa behind the bar for those of us who would like to join you for spiked hot chocolate this winter. Otherwise, Mame is relaxed, cozy and wonderfully Irish. Thumbs up! read more

I'm not sure if I've ever left such a positive Yelp review before, but after a genuinely great experience at Mame and the sad lack of reviews for this bar, I wanted to throw in my 5-star rating so this place can hopefully thrive! It was my first time in and the ambience was great, bar staff great, drinks great, music great! Other than wishing for a happy hour (where did they all go Portland???!) this place hits all of my cocktail bar check marks. Can't wait to go back! read more

Best semi-hidden gem on Hawthorne! Low lit and beautifully dressed. Great spot for a date night or solo hang, too! Fun little "underground" bar with in a very intimate setting. Craft bar. Great food. And the menu gets better every time I'm there. Lots of room for individual conversations. Two closed off (curtains) booths for 8 to 10 people. Staff is friendly, the bartenders are great! A must see place just 10 minutes from down town on SE Hawthorne avenue.
