A heated patio, how lovely. Right across from the vendors, a perfect dive bar. The bartenders here work quickly and made decent drinks for a reasonable price. The Gimlet and Mai Tai looked and tasted somewhat identical, but the taste was good so I can't complain. The layout is ideal for big groups and they lean into it (3 for $5 jello shots). read more

I am going to give them a four star because going in I knew what to expect and they delivered exactly that and some more . We wanted to enjoy our cart food with some alcohol and since this place lets you get cart food inside we decided to take them up on their offer . We ordered three cocktails and were promptly attended .The inside is spacious but the outdoor patio looked like the spot to be ..heated and buzzing with people . They had a lot of regulars coming in and the place did not seem to be vacant even for a second even late on a Sunday night. The drinks were pretty average but boozy, and the two ladies at the bar were attentive and friendly . Really good service and very reasonable prices . read more

Have been here a few times as we've recently moved close to this spot. While it's comfortable enough for a casual meet-up with friends, the service has been hostile as hell half the time I've seen them interact with customers. Like Kitchen Nightmares-level stuff. They are always in a really bad mood. I think the most prominent example was when a customer had apparently not tipped on a drink, she brought it out to him and very aggressively yelled in front of the crowded outdoor area "HERE YOU GO, AND DON'T MIND LEAVING A TIP NEXT TIME WE'D APPRECIATE IT" (Don't feel bad for her at all, by the way. I was back in line later and overheard her go "WOW is this for me?" to someone who had apparently left a massive tip for her to make up for it). I mean, I always tip, as do most people in this city, but you can't ever, ever, ever say something like that to a customer. read more

Have you even been at Whiffies or Potato Champion and thought to yourself "If only I could take this awesome food indoors and wash it down with alcohol." THAT DAY HAS COME! It came about a week ago and my dumb ass was shivering on the cold asphalt of the Hawthorne pod because I left my coat here. My boys Bob and Ryan opened this place, so you hafta take my word for it that if it sucked I wouldn't be doing them the favor of entering it in Yelp. It doesn't suck. It's a medium sized space so new it still smells like wood. The beer selection is carefully considered (altho they have Rainier instead of PBR, boo!) and both bar dudes have plenty of wrist and shoulder strength to prevent critical underpours. The kitchen is, well, you can bring in cart food! I can't make any promises but if you're a good tipper they may even allow trips to Burgerville, but don't get pissed at me if they don't think that's as good an idea as I do. They have a big tented porch where you can drink sort of on the sidewalk at a picnic table; they probably take down the tent walls when the weather gets nice. Inside, it's kind of a standard funky neighborhood spot that's fun--a few booths and tables, some cool original oil paintings on the walls. The staff here and very friendly and charming, and they look like they mix a ton of drinks. The beer list is fairly meaningless for the beer nerd, but by no means is it bad. We grabbed a booth and had a couple beers with our food cart meals. Great setting and nothing wrong with it at all, just not a fancy destination place. read more

Just have to say that the margaritas were good however the inside smelled like an old bathroom and the outside is smoking friendly. Too bad .. we didn't feel there was a good spot to sit. Pretty good little joint. Nice atmosphere. Not you're typical dive bar. A bit of an upgrade. I think this spot is a bit more upper class than the average dive bar. In fact, it isn't a dive bar really. High dive over the dive bar I guess. The pours are nice and generous. They have an amazing choice of liquor and a few good beers on tap. I really liked the welcoming atmosphere and the friendly weight staff. I could see this being a nice joint for regulars who live close by. You are welcome to bring in food from the carts next door and I saw a lot of people doing this. Super yummy goodies. It really makes it a nice warm spot to relax if it is a rainy day, you want to get food from the carts, and sit somewhere warm inside. Way to go High Dive. Good Spot!! read more

Small but fun place. TV on the covered patio for Blazer games and tv inside too. Staff is great and though they don't serve food (except taco Tuesday) they let you bring food in from Que Pasa next door, Jolly Roger from across the street or the food carts around the corner. read more

A friendly bar, middle of the road nice dive. The outside seating is appealing and great for people watching. No table service. This last visit, they were out of a a few beers, I think they were down to two offerings. I had a Boneyard RPM IPA-was a bit on the warm side. Great spot to wait for your table if you decide to dine at Taqueria next door. One bathroom that acts as a storage facility, too. It's located right next to the bar top. Great bartenders and always some fun stories told by the clientele. read more

After serving our four drinks she changed the channel. When we reminded her we were there for the other game she said she was sorry they were a Trail Blazers bar not a sports bar. The high dive - the one at the pool, ya know - used to scare all but the literal crap out of me. During the debacle of the summer I took swimming lessons, I was the kid who climbed up the ladder and froze at the top, making the other students waiting behind me grow mutinous. All the swim instructors had to assemble in the water below and coax me to (fucking) jump already. Still I balked, and the awkward interaction between water sports and me reached its Hiroshima. Praise your god and goddess that there is no such reticence between me and the High Dive, the bar, near Hawthorne. I'm a much better drinker and hanger-outer than I am a swimmer. They have cheap beer in cans as well as Old Fashioneds crafted with Bulleit and thick lemon zests as well as free reign for any of the food cart dishes around the corner, so there's an appeal for any kind of imbiber. It's a testament to how skilled we are at hanging out at the High Dive, because we started there on Friday, headed up to another bar with the rest of the group, then decided to return to the High Dive as a splinter faction. A splinter faction of hanger-outers. And while it appears that the group dynamic has ensconced the High Dive in a solid four-star place, I'd even go out on a limb and give it five. As long as that limb is not a crazy-tall diving board. Jebus Fries, never again. read more

I totally expected this bar to be a dive. But it's not. Not really, anyway. There's way too much daylight in this bar for it to be anything close to a dive. Honestly this bar defies classification of anything beyond a "bar." It's a square space with tables, a couple of booths, and a bar. And one bathroom. The floors are concrete, the walls have some art on them, the bar is made from a light wood, and the spirit selection is deeper than your average bar of average disposition. For an upcharge you can get fresh squeezed juice in your drink. The bartender during our visit was plenty friendly and helpful and knowledgable about spirits. Why does this review sound so plain? Because, well, this bar is too. But that's fine. A plain, laid back spot to knock back a few and focus on the people you're drinking with (and not the bar itself). Love. This. Place. Seriously. Love. I have had the best times in this bar in both small gatherings and large celebrations. While they call it a "dive," it's anything but. It's tastefully decorated, and when I recently asked the bartender if she could make me something with sweet tea vodka, she immediately juiced a fresh lemon as part of her concoction. What dive would do that? The drink, by the way, rocked my socks off. Their outdoor patio is large and sunny, and while it's located on a busy intersection, it doesn't feel too much like "highway dining" since it's right at the turn to get to the Hawthorne Bridge. Best part about this place? They encourage you to bring cart food in to enjoy with your drinks. No longer do you have to eat your deep-fried Whiffies pie while shivering around a space heater under the cart tent, or shoveling it in shame in your parked car. You can eat it like a right proper civilized human being alongside a beer, a shot of whiskey, and God willing, a rainbow selection of Jello shots. read more

Can't believe I've yet to review High Dive. It is sort of a high-end dive, I think. I love the patio, I love the interior with the pictures of local famous Portlanders randomly placed on the walls. The bartenders are very knowledgable and creative, and if you tell them what you're in the mood for, they can concoct something special for you. They also have Churchkey's! It's kind of the new hipster beer of choice or something, but I really like it. Their jello shots are good too, but I wondered the other night if they may have been leftover from JW's birthday...but, who cares, it's just jello, right? I'm pretty sure jello stays good for a long time and could survive a nuclear fallout. Major pluses for being able to bring in cart food....and Pyro pizza, Potato Champion and Whiffies sure don't hurt their Business....perfect drunken munchies! read more

This may be the perfectly named bar! The high dive seems to be that perfect mix between high class and divey bar. They have a cool high class space, but that awesome neighborhoody feel of your local dive bar. One thing I really like is that they don't pretend to be anything more than what they are, a cool bar with great drinks. Yes, they have the required food options to keep the evil OLCC at bay, but they really encourage you to go next door to the food carts and bring in your own vittles. By the way, the new list of cocktails looks pretty tasty. I haven't had a chance to taste them all but I will take one for the yelp team and keep plugging away at them and report back with my findings. 1 star off for being a little inconsistent in their quality of mixology, but that isn't stopping me from coming back again and again. read more

You can eat Pyro Pizza here. Literally, they will walk your pizza over to you from the food carts so that you can enjoy it in the lounge-y atmosphere of the High Dive. Also, I believe they do SIN every night. Often have DJ's on the weekends too. But mostly, you can chomp on food from the 12th and Hawthorne food cart pod at this lovely lil' joint, which is just so damned gracious and neighborly. I liked this place better before they started having DJ's. DJ's just make a place suck in my opinion. I want to be able to go someplace where I can actually carry on a conversation with my friends, not where I have to yell over someone playing crappy music. Luckily I think this is only the case on Friday and Saturday nights, so a weeknight trip may be alright. I live closer to several other bars though, so I don't know how often I'll be trekking back now that the DJ's have invaded. They are close to food carts, you can bring your food here from the carts and chow down with some tasty drinks, the bathroom was clean, the prices don't suck. That pretty much sums it up, it's an ok place to come hang out but I used to like it a lot more than I do now. read more

Good spot - with some wrinkles to be worked out... This place has great potential. Not only do they let you bring food cart food in, they're going to have a joint menu with some of the foodcarts. Hopefully I'll soon be able to order a Burnside Oatmeal Ale and some Poutine (oh wow, my mouth just got wet from typing Poutine). The bar itself is very warm and beautiful with unfinished, horizontal wood covering the back wall and the bar. Great location, outdoor seating, dark, comfortable, good whiskey selection, nice owners (who are also the bartenders). Unfortunately, (I think because they're so new) they've got a few things they need to work out. The first thing me and my group noticed when walking in was the strong smell of paint and lacquer. The chairs and barstools have been stained with a dark, blackish tone - very nice but the obvious stink culprit. When in the bathroom with some more light, you can see that all the paint and all the wood trim is fresh too. They just need a good airing-out. They could use a few more beers on tap (currently just 3); however, what they do have on tap was great the night I was there - Ninkasi IPA, Burnside Oatmeal Ale, and a Coffee Porter. Like Danielle I. mentioned, they don't yet have a cocktail menu. They also don't have a cash register so paying ended up being a conundrum. Everything is recorded on a spiral notebook. The music was all over the place and a little too loud. One minute they're playing Reggae, then Irish rock, then some Indi rock. All good genre's, but a little consistency might help folks get in the groove. I'll give this place a few months to work out the knots and try it again. read more

This newly opened little bar in SE Portland is a gem! Tucked on SE 12th between Que Pasa, and the Jolly Roger, this space is just what the corner needed. It is a sexy little space with warm woods and nice dim lighting. It isn't stinky like the Jolly Roger next door. The bartenders are friendly and pour good drinks. Bob is excellent at making drink recommendations too. The High Dive welcomes food from the carts on 12th and Hawthorne. It is the perfect place to take your late-night cart snack. You can get out of the cold and have a good cocktail with your food. I'm happy this place is here. The bartenders told me they will have outdoor seating come warmer weather and I look forward to that as well. It is the perfect location for sitting outside with drink in hand and watching people. read more

There was a nail sticking out on one their outside seating booths. It wasn't sticking out far, so I didn't notice it. When I got up to get another drink, it tore my skirt - a lot - - and ruined it (of course it was a favorite one). When I told them about it, they did fix the nail, but they didn't really apologize much, they just made excuses. A more obvious apology and an offer of a free drink would have gone a long way. Ya know, at least pretend they were a little sorry would have been nice. Not going back. read more

The High Dive is a simple, small, bright, cozy space to have a few beers. If you want something a little quieter than the jolly roger this is a good place to stop in. It's like the bar version of a cafe, and they had $2 Rainer beer which was nice.
