Stopped in for a refreshing drink as we were in the area. Not a lot of places were open on Fourth of July, but Sandy Hut was. Cute little bar with small outdoor seating area. It's dark inside with minimal lighting. We ordered at the bar and took our drinks outside since it was a sunny day. We each ordered a green tea shot. Which was way more tart than we've ever had at any other place. Went back to try their coconut mezcalita but they didn't have coconut, so I asked if they could make a spicy margarita and he said no. We ended up closing the tab after the green tea shot and went to a different bar. The bartender was nice. It's a nice spot for a sunny day so we will probably be back since summer is here. read more

My friends and I went to this bar only because Google said they were open til 2:30 and we were celebrating our friend's birthday. We got there at 1:48am and immediately when we got in there they were incredibly rude. They told us they were only serving shots due to time, which was okay. Then mins later they were yelling at everyone at the bar to "Get the F*ck out" at 2:03. So I went up to the main bartender and asked for clarification, because I was genuinely confused as to why they were being so rude when online said they didn't close til 2:30. He told me that they're open til 2:30 but stop serving at 2:10... meanwhile it's not even 2:10... the whole experience was negative. I realize that we should have never been in a tacky bar in the first place but it's sad to realize that people who are in the service industry have little to no hospitality skills. I have never in my life been told to "get the "f*ck out" by anyone employed by a business and I'm honestly disgusted. read more

Went about a year ago and had a superb BLT. On this trip it was no longer on the menu but the bartender was kind enough to offer to make it anyway. It was just as good as on the last visit. Very fun dive bar to visit with friends. There is one pool table, so if you want to play maybe come in earlier or on a weekday so you don't have to fight for it. The Sandy Hut is your typical dive bar. The crowd is mid 20's to 30's I'm guessing. There's a pool table which is what brought me into this bar in the first place. This was my favorite and best little dive bar we were able to visit while in PDX after seeing a sold-out show out at the Pioneer Square. We showed up around 11pm and it was bumping with so many patrons and folks drinking and eating the night away. I was surprised to see how large this spot was after and also how cool and retro feeling The Sandy Hut made us feel right as we walked in. We had a really easy time, despite the late-night crowd, ordering our drinks at the bar as well as food. I was happy to see they had tallboy beers so I opted for a tried-and-true Lonestar tallboy (Hey! I am from Texas!) and a shot of wells whiskey. My guy ended up having a nice Old-Fashion which was deliciously made and tasty! Due to the crowd we sat outside on the small benches right off of the street side. It was such a nice night to not be outside so we were happy out there. DJ was spinning some classic tunes and people were really enjoying their time at the pool tables, conversations with one another, and some were dancing. It was a really great vibe altogether. Horrible service. My friend and I came in to play pool one night and we waited about 10 minutes to get drinks. It wasn't busy but the bartender decided to ask all the regulars if they needed a drink and do a bunch of dishes and other stuff before serving my friend and I. I still left them a tip but they added more to it before charging me, which is illegal. It was only a couple bucks so I didn't report it, but still, it's obviously a very poorly run place. read more

Happy 100th Anniversary to this fine Dive/Semi-Tiki establishment. Solid drinks at great prices. The bartenders I've met there aren't pretentious, which is always a positive (shoutout to Mikey who always kills it). There's an excellent Hirschfeld mural and a pool table, two things I love very much. Now, let's talk about the crowd - sometimes you can get a annoying group or three, but it's usually my kind of crowd. There's the grizzled regulars and then there's the fresh-faced newcomers, wide-eyed and ready to dive headfirst into the chaos. First time here last weekend and wow love me a good retro looking dive bar. Driving down Sandy I always saw a crowd outside and I can see why after this first visit. Friday night here was a crowd and was surprised that they even had a DJ! It was a unique experience to see the retro ambiance, DJ/makeshift dance floor in the middle of the place, and a pool table on the side. Come early because both the inside and outdoor tables get packed! Drinks are standard and a mix of what's on tap, cider, and even jello shots. Say whaaat!? Also they also have pretty solid burgers! Never expected this place to serve food but their burgers have a nice crisp and char on the patty and the bun holds up well. Nice thin and crispy fries to pair with their side sauce. One of the last remaining dive bars in the central core of east side. I will admit that I was very worried when it was purchased by the new owners a few years ago. However, that transformation was mostly for the better. They significantly improved the food without taking away any of the dingy charm that made that gave the Sandy Hut its nicknames. They were able to add a significant amount of outdoor seating to accommodate the new realty that we are in. In fact, I think they could add even more given the low utilization of the side streets that the bar sits on. They could definitely build into the parking lots to set up more tables. We're going to need somewhere to safety drink during this winter. I haven't had their brunch since the pandemic started, but before, it was a well kept secret. The food was delicious, the service was quick, and unlike everywhere else in this city, THERE WAS NEVER A LINE. read more

She didn't insult my mom or anything, but all she did was ask what we wanted, made it, and literally put them on the counter and walked off without saying anything. The drink was fine. Well the unbelievable just happened. I went to Sandy Hut, a bar for the first time with my girlfriend. We played lottery machines in a packed place. When asked for food about an hour before closing they said no. Didn't think much about it till later. At closing I went to cash my winningtickets. My girlfriend had won some money, and she gave me those tickets to help with my rent, it was a Godsend so I thought. I told the bar tender here is more tickets. I gave him several other tickets for a total of 7 tickets. Few minutes later I was handed a small stack of cash and saying here is your money , after counting the money I immediately told him it was incorrect there was a big voucher missing and even without the $320 voucher there is still $100 missing. It was clear they were praying on buzzed clients and hoping they don't count the money or the vouchers. The bartender got extremely angry and hostile telling me to get the F out and I should have come up sooner then, even though there was still many people living the bar at 2:20ish. I said maybe there was a mistake and the voucher was dropped or not counted correctly. Both bartenders declined the possibility and wouldn't look for it, the taller bartender then told me why am I standing there and to get the F out. I was shocked but complied immediately. He made another nasty comment to me which was uncalled for and then said you should have signed your tickets dumbass. Implying they are now gone and I won't get them back. I contacted the police and they have not shown up yet over an hour after the call. Be careful if you visit this bar. The bartender is extremely aggressive and unhelpful. They refuse to provide their phone number or manager/ owners name. The number listed online rings and rings then a message says your call won't be returned !!! Call it theft or misunderstanding of sort but over $500 in tickets just went in thin air and I'm not sure what to do. The people that were supposed to help me told to leave without looking for my ticket. Update: I contacted Oregon lottery the next day. A very nice gentleman looked into it. They had all the data and my tickets cashed. They said I was right and they will launch an investigation. I went back to the place and asked to talk to manger hoping after Oregon lottery confirmed my claim I will be paid. I couldn't have been more wrong. Both bartenders said they can't belive I'm there after calling police and I should get the f out. Security escorted me out and he refused to provide the manager name and the phone number as well. This is shady place open drunk clients one notice the money is missing. I will follow up and update my review. Once investigation is complete. read more

Came here for the good reviews and it is across the street from voodoo doughnuts. I was very impressed. Its a typical dive bar inside and out but the food and prices were unbeatable. I got eggs, hash browns, toast AND a mimosa for just over $10. All had great flavor. You can tell it's popular as there are many regulars. They have good space inside for eating and a decent bar size. There is also some off street parking which is impressive. If I ever make it back to Portland I would definitely come back. read more

Okay I love dive bars. It's just my thing. I'd rather drink in a dingy, low lit place that's a little grungy than some fancy place any day. This place does not disappoint! I've been here several times since my original review... It just keeps getting worse. Bartenders act like they have100 people in line when there are 2. Everything is rushed and customer service (or manners) don't exist. They also play their own "ironic" hipster music and get ANGRY when you PAY for songs on the jukebox and then skip them. Regardless of how you feel about country, I'd recommend it to anyone. The bar also serves some great drinks with an awesome vibe. My friends and I came here for the first time last night, and we enjoyed the atmosphere and drinks. We liked the dive bar feel and played some pool! Only thing we did not appreciate was one of the bartenders with a buzz cut was just a jerk ): we had only one round of drinks at that point, so it's not like we were being drunk idiots. The old Portland is almost all but gone. However, some of its old haunts still stand. Sandy is an institution, a place to drink some pretty stiff drinks, play some tabletops if you snag a spot, listen to some loud music, and PRIME RIB WEDNESDAYS (cut of meat is huge and delicious)!!!!! They have a pretty decent hangover brunch too! Never thought I would say that about the hut. The bartenders, the atmosphere (I do miss the old ceiling and the punk crowd),and the people are what makes the place. Stop by, have a bite, have a drink, tip well, be a nice human, and you sooner or later you will become a regular. read more
