Like many people, I really didn't want to buy a new roof. It's an insane amount of money. It's basically, "Do I buy a new car or replace my roof?" No one wants to do it, let's be honest--but sometimes it has to be done. So, like most homeowners, I called around and got a bunch of quotes. Since this is our hard-earned money, we want quality work at a fair price. Here's the honest breakdown: this company operates kind of like a broker for roofers. They work with third-party roofing companies who operate under the Epic banner. You get the comfort of their warranty, which definitely helps you feel a little more "warm and toasty" about the whole thing. They send someone out to give you a quote, but keep in mind: that initial quote is almost always lower than your final cost. They don't know how much dry rot or wood repair they'll find until the old roof is removed--and I understand that. We scheduled the start date around the weather. On the morning of the job, the crew showed up around 7 a.m. There wasn't much confirmation beforehand, but they did start on the agreed-upon day, so points for that. Most communication is done via email and text. You're assigned a project manager who oversees the third-party roofing crew. The project manager was nice enough and responsive. The roofers themselves have their own businesses but work under Epic's name, which is fine. Day 1: Demo day. This is also when they want payment. They do offer payment plans, but heads up--if you use Zelle, it's limited to $5K per day. They also handled all the wood repair (plywood, etc.), which increased the total bill. No surprises there. Day 2: City permits. Honestly, kind of a joke. I have cameras at my house--the inspector was there for maybe a minute, signed off, and left. That cost me about $700. Gotta love the City of Hayward. Also, be aware: they are very on top of payments. Day 3: The crew really got after it. Full re-roof, new flashing, vents--solid work. Day 4: The project manager came out to inspect everything, paint the flashing, and address any concerns I brought up. I do appreciate that follow-through. They also installed brand-new gutters and downspouts. Do NOT pay for gutter guards. Seriously--go to Home Depot and do it yourself. You'll save $700+ and it's very easy. Make sure you read your contract closely. They will do exactly what's written--nothing more, nothing less. That's not a complaint, just something to be aware of. It was a learning experience for me. I'm a DIY guy, so after demo on Day 1, I went up on the roof and painted and resealed all the old and new wood myself. This is 100% something I recommend doing. It's not their job and it's not in the quote, but it's worth it. Don't assume they'll handle that. The crew was respectful and hardworking. I made sure to bring them drinks and stayed out of the way as much as possible. They mostly spoke Spanish and were nice overall. Cleanup was decent, but if you're super picky, don't expect your yard to look untouched. It's a full re-roof--some mess is expected. After the job was done, I had to follow up to get my warranty and transferable paperwork. I'm currently still waiting on that in writing. Again, make sure you stay on top of them--but also, make sure you pay, because they'll definitely stay on top of you. Shout-out to Laza Roofing, the crew that did my roof. From what I can tell, the quality of work is solid--but only time will truly tell. That warranty is what's supposed to keep me warm and toasty at night... once I actually receive it. Final thoughts: Price: Fair, in line with other quotes (even with add-ons) Quality: Good and acceptable Workers: Professional and friendly My main suggestion is improving communication and scheduling. I was texting and calling about four different people, which isn't ideal--especially for such a huge purchase. The project manager did check in and made sure I was satisfied, which helped.
