I am very happy with the job that RK Roofing recently performed on our house. They were very professional, organized, timely and cleaned up, even my gutters are clean now, every day they were on the job. During the initial inspection of our roof Richard noticed that both our garage and attic space were extremely hot and needed some vents to release the hot air. So along with the solar reflective shingles that he installed and the new vents (one with a solar vent fan), the house has been cooler even though the last 3 days the outside temperature has been in the 80's. Ken contacted me after my request for a quote on Yelp regarding a skylight installation. As Yelp provides a simple form to be filled out only, I contacted the company and explained to the receptionist Cindy that we need to replace the existing single skylight with exactly the same. She took all data needed and promised an estimate. I had to call again and ask why we did not receive an estimate. After we did not receive an estimate, I called also the owner, Ken, he referred me to the other owner, Amanda. Both were under the believe, that we need 2 skylights, even though Cindy took perfect notes. I explained to each one of them that we need a replacement of our old single skylight. Today Amanda called my property manager to explain that they can install 2 skylights and cut them into 6 skylights !!! I called Ken and he said that they will provide a quote for 2 skylights. And this is all after I talked yesterday to each Ken and Amanda for 30 minutes explaining - ONE Skylight please! This company is a complete joke. Giving one star because of Cindy, as she answers the phone. What a waste of time. read more

Fantastic roofing company! I have worked with Richard for over 15 years and I can't say enough good things about his wonderful company and his workers. I recommend him to everyone I know. Through the years, leaks will sometimes occur when a roof gets older and Richard and his crew always come out right away to trouble shoot and fix the problem. Just last week, Agustin was very thorough and found the source of a tricky leak in the ceiling of my garage. He carefully inspected the roof of my garage, and then figured out the leak in the ceiling wasn't from the roof, but rather, it was from the failed caulking of a wall above the garage. Very strange owner named Ken. He utilizes this new business approach that ultimately culminates with him calling me (potential customer) an "asshole". Yep, ive heard about this business approach being taught at prestigious business schools such as Wharton, Harvard and Yale. I think its called " The sabotage enigma" Its where you deliberately allow your potential customers to make several phone calls in anticipation of making an appt he is not interested anymore? The best part, is when I called to ask him what happened? He such a spineless, feckless (person) dont want o use the word MAN, he started to make feeble excuses like the "unit is too small" or how many "units are in the building" Things he never asked initially? I explained all the history and the current problems and asked both him and his secretary if all was okay? They both stated sure we can go ahead and get you an estimate. Well, this company cannot be trusted to stand by the owners word , which tells me the quality of work must be "substandard" to say the least. Do yourself a favor, try another company. We had a new roof put on our house and Richard Kang and company did an excellent job. They came prepared with everything they needed and they knew what they were doing. They removed the old roof and put on a new roof in 2 days because they had eight roofers that worked very hard and efficiently. They cleaned up each day. Richard was also very helpful with our desire to have a cool roof with adequate ventilation and the second story of our house is now livable on sunny days in the summer. We love Richard. We had about 8 companies come bid on our roof -- a VERY old tar and gravel that should have been put in as a shingle roof. We went with Richard because he gave a very competitive bid, was super responsive, and struck me as being very experienced in comparison to the other roofers we spoke with. When they actually came out to put the roof on, unexpected rain was coming in and he pulled all his guys onto our roof -- finishing our 3 bedroom house (with significant rot) in about two and a half days. So, that was great, but the experience I had this weekend was what is going to motivate me to sing his praises far and wide. We have a small rental cottage in our back yard that we JUST converted. Three days after tenets moved in we had a huge storm and the roof basically gave way on one side -- rain was pouring in along the walls, and coming up through the floor. It's a mess. I called Richard frantic, he came out the same day to look at it, then brought his crew out a couple days later (on a Sunday), even though he was booked until May (!!!!). He really went out of his way to hustle and save us. RK Roofing is wonderful! An ethical and honest business who will actually really go out of their way to help homeowners (even inexperienced ones like me) when it's not necessarily convenient for them. read more

We recently bought a house that had the original shake roof, as well as one to two composite roofs over it. We got a bunch of quotes and Richard's was competitive, but I liked his energy and the fact that his guys got on the roof and didn't just gaze at it from the driveway. He answered the 120000 questions we had and we hired him and his crew. They showed up on time - or even a little early - every day. Richard was on site most of the time and his guys worked tirelessly and had my old roof torn off in a day and a half (so, so, so, so dirty), and the new one on in two more. This was in late summer/early fall of last year (2016). It's now February 2017 and we know it's been raining like crazy this winter. We have had no leaks, no problems, no issues. I was worried - I'm a worrier - and I compulsively checked the ceilings for signs of water for a few weeks but there's been nothing. I very highly recommend RK Roofing because they did a great job on our roof, which was a difficult job, a 100 year-old 3-layer roof, needing framing reinforcement and a couple of other twists. They are very affordable, as their pricing was significantly under roofers we got quotes from. The quality of their work is very high - our roof looks beautiful, the gutters are gorgeous, and the framing was all done as requested, even with some tweaks over time from our residential engineer. They worked closely with me to place several light tubes exactly where I wanted them. They even did a spectacular job of cleaning up, down to picking out little pieces of shingles from our gardens. They took the time to get it right and made sure I was satisfied. Richard's crew, I fond out, has been with him for over 20 years - it was apparent in how well they worked together and got the job done quickly, even tho it was the most difficult roof they had all season. Our roof was long overdue for replacement (already had two layers) so I decided to pull the trigger finally. Called 5 places in the Bay Area. Two couldn't even send someone out for a month to give an estimate. Three came out including Richard Kang from RK Roofing. All three estimates were in the same ballpark and were reasonable. I should mention that I called RK Roofing first because I saw them working on a roof on a neighbor's house nearby. I assumed they did their due diligence as well before hiring Richard. The other companies I got from Yelp. Overall, the cost and description of what needed to be done was pretty similar between the three companies so I decided to go with RK due to them having worked on other homes in my area and I liked Richard from the start. As far as the work itself, they were able to start a few weeks after signing on the dotted line which was great as I have my new roof before the rainy season. They stripped the old roof and completed everything in 3 days. At the end of each day they did a very thorough job cleaning up all around my house which was great. We also had very strong winds and cold temps over all 3 days so they were troopers working up on the roof and cleaning up after. The crew went above and beyond also in two areas which need mentioning: 1) some new stucco needed painting and I happened to not have any house paint which matched so they went to the store and got some new paint to do the job and 2) they took down a very old monstrosity of an antenna from 1950 on my chimney. They did all that no problem at no extra charge which I greatly appreciated. All I can say beyond that is I'm very satisfied with the work Richard and his crew at RK Roofing did on my new roof. I would definitely recommend them to any of my friends and neighbors. They have gotten a good amount of business just from neighbors seeing their trucks in front of other houses so I hope that confidence from others continues. I have used Richard Kang (RK Roofing) exclusively for the last ten years. He put a new roof on a commercial building I own in Oakland (6400 sq. ft.) in 2002, including new plywood sheething. He then did a "delicate" gutter replacement on a 1926 home I used to own. Most recently, he replaced a roof on a small home I purchased in Castro Valley. In each case, he has been timely, professional, and reasonably priced. On the Castro Valley home, he stood on the roof supervising the work, and I watched him tutor the individual workers at various points in the job, to make sure every bit of work was to his standards. I don't imagine this can happen on every job, but it sure was nice. A big plus is the timeliness when the job begins, and the typically large crew size he uses. This gets jobs done start-to-finish in a relatively short time. As a licensed contractor myself (in an unrelated specialty), I very much appreciate Richard's capabilities. read more

When the horrific wind storm roared through the Oakland hill in January, it tore off approximately 1/3 of our tar and gravel roof and shattered one skylight and cracked a second one. This occurred at about 2:30 AM and to add to the misery, we were experiencing a 12 hour power outage. I contacted Richard Kang, the owner of RK Roofing the next morning and he came out the same day with his crew run by his manager, Augustine. They removed the damaged section and covered the area with heavy duty plastic sheeting to protect it until he could get back to replace the entire roof and three skylights. A few days later we had another windstorm along with heavy rains. They came back to check on the plastic sheeting and reinforced it some more. As soon as we had a few dry days in a row, he squeezed us into his schedule and Augustine's crew worked extra hours and on a Saturday to finish us up. I highly recommend RK Roofing. read more

I took 3 bids for a roof replacement. I got the highest bid here, but he identified all the problems that the other contractors identified plus recommended what I would call a proper solution with a warranty. About 5 years later I had a leak and he came out and fixed it. No regrets. read more

(Silver Birch) He was reliable, charged less than ten percent up front and did not take a penny from me until the work was done and the clean up made my house and landscape look cleaner than before. He found many mistakes on my roof from prior distasterous roofer and charged very little to fix them and replace and add materials. I won't let anyone else near my roof ever again. He stuck to his price and I ended up paying less than I even expected with wood and materials replacement fixes. Richard and his team installed a new roof for us about two years back. After the massive recent rains (we received more than 3 inches in a single day), I realized that there was a leak in one corner of the roof--water was coming down behind the drywall and seeping out across the floor (an earlier leak in the same area had prompted the initial replacement). So why the five star review? Because after I called Richard to let him know about the problem at 3:30 PM on a Friday, he was at my door at 8:00 the following morning. He inspected the damage, acknowledged the problem and mistake, and made a solid temporary patch. Then he had his guys back here by midweek, on the first day that the rains allowed; they repaired the roof (including making some alterations to improve overall drainage), tore out and replaced all the wet wall and insulation, and fixed the damaged floor area. All of that was done in less than a day, with the same courtesy and efficiency I remembered from the initial work. In a perfect world, every repair and installation would be flawless the first time. But that's not the reality even with responsible and solid work, and in case of an issue you want someone who will make it right quickly and with minimal fuss. As so many others have already pointed out, Richard is so responsive to his customers. In my case, he effectively dropped everything to squeeze me into his busy schedule when I was pressed for a new roof and having to meet a schedule for solar installation that had already been set. My roof was over 25 years old and although I had talked to Richard about his installing a new one but he had been so busy at the time that he suggested I wait a few months. Since I was in the early stages of researching solar panels, this was not a problem. I was in no rush to install panels either, only to have to go through the process of having to remove them again to reroof. Because of various unavoidable delays with the solar company, it was not until well into the fall of 2017 that a date had been set for installation that December. I contacted Richard and told him my problem. He said he could see what he could do. Within a day or two, he was back in touch, saying he could come the following Friday and part of Saturday. The rest is history. Importantly, too, the roof drew the attention of a well-known architect neighbor who remarked on the fine workmanship and asked who the company was. I got the sense that they didn't cut any corners. They didn't cause me any grief or uncertainty.
