When I checked it via TestDisk on macOS, the HDD appeared as 0 bytes / 0 GiB, indicating a much deeper disk or partition-level issue. It turned out the PCB was damaged, the translator was corrupted, and two heads were misaligned. Despite the severe damage, Kotar successfully recovered 100% of my data, and I am incredibly happy to have everything back. I trusted them from the start because of their "no data, no charge" policy. What makes them even better is that they are a trustworthy, local business right here in San Jose. Unlike many of the large data recovery services, you don't have to mail your drive away to some random location. If you need data recovery, look no further than Kotar!

Above and beyond service!…read more My MacBook was hanging off a thread. I called for an estimate, and they gave me a price within the range I was looking for. I will be back for my future computer needs.

I brought my laptop in on Friday afternoon after liquid damage and was told they'd clean it,…read morediagnose it, and have it ready by Monday. After a couple of calls, I finally got it back Tuesday. The diagnosis was simply that a "power chip" was damaged, and they recommended replacing the entire motherboard for about $690 because they don't do chip-level repairs. They also charged me for the diagnostic ~$100, even though their website advertises a free diagnostic. The laptop still smells strongly of coffee, which also made me question whether it was actually cleaned or how thorough the cleaning was. Overall, the turnaround was longer than promised, communication required follow-up, and the diagnosis was too vague to give me confidence in spending nearly $700 on a motherboard replacement.

I took my laptop in after finding it dead on a Thursday morning. I use it as my main computer with…read morea powered hub and extended monitor. I was asked if I wanted expedited service and of course I said "yes" to the charge of $99 since I needed it turned around fast. On Friday I called to find out the status and was told that it needed to be "opened" and if I approved (another charge) with no commitment as to when it would be fixed. Saturday was the tech's day off and they are not open on Sunday so no apparent rush to fix it. On Monday I was asked if I needed the data. I had originally said "no" because I had my data backed up on Carbonite. I asked about the Apps that I had and the tech said they would be wiped as well so I decided to save the data and apps. This was a $199 charge to "determine if the data was salvageable" by testing the SSD. I was then called and told that yes, the SSD was salvageable and there would be a $599 charge to recover it. Each step was a dagger because I needed my computer and the data/apps so I approved the charges. I finally got my computer back on Monday afternoon with a $1,600 bill feeling like I should have just bought a new computer and put up with reinstalling my apps. I got the computer home, hooked into my system and it worked fine. The next morning it was dead again. I hooked it up to a spare charger (bypassing the powered hub) and the computer was back to life. The entire problem was my hub charger! At no time was I advised that a charger might have been the problem and was instead overcharged for work that wasn't needed (probably not even opened to get to the SSD that I was bill around $800 for testing and recovery.) THIS PLACE IS A RIPOFF! I'm thinking of reporting them to the BBB. Update on 08/14/26: Eddy from ClickAway reached out to explain the services that were performed on my laptop. After his explanation I am now better informed of the work and charges and better appreciate what was needed to get it restored to working order. I updated my original rating based on an agreement to reduce the price of data restoration. I am looking forward to a continued relationship with ClickAway.
