Very disappointed, I called to ask if they had cichlids fish and they said yes a lot of different ones, so we drove all the way from New Jersey only to waste our time . First of all the place smells like rotten water , aside from having a very limited variety of cichlids they don't look that great , there was this one specific tank that all the fish were swimming strangely and one other tank had a sign that said check filter ( maybe that explains in part why the place smelled bad ) because the tanks are not properly maintained. But why put a sign up ? Just service the filter so the fish can live in proper water conditions . And last but not least , all the questions we asked were answered with : but it's not guaranteed . Seriously I think I know more about African Cichlids than the person working there. We didn't buy any fish since I don't think the water conditions and fish health were good , and in all honesty I wouldn't recommend buying live anything from this place . I brought my Shih Tzu from here feb 21 2025, when this place was selling puppies. He was going on 5 months at that time but they kind of seemed alittle unsure. When I found them on Google, I went to the website to look for a puppy. I called the contact number on the website. They asked me which dog I wanted and they told me the price he wanted to make sure that I was 100% buying a puppy and I told him that I was. They told me over the phone its appointments only. When I got to the store it looked like it was closed. Seemed alittle weird. I waited around for about 30 minutes until my appointment time they let me in. They let me see the dog. He looked sick and he didn't look like the dog that I seen on the website, he was 500.00 dollars. I still decided to buy him but I kept getting a feeling like it was a lot of scamming going on. I kind of wish I would have read the reviews before I purchased him because he does seem to have some mental and behavioral issues, even though he is still a good dog it took a while for him to get used to us the way he should have.. I called the next day to find out basic information about him. They told me what I needed to know. They told me he only needed two shots when I took him to the vet he needed about four I tried to call back to ask another question I couldn't reach them. I go back to their website and it says that the shop is shut down and that it will become a place where they sell fish. It's feels like they took my money and shut down not too long after. I went there almost 17 years ago to get a miniature Yorkie. I had bought a Maltese from another pet shop that guaranteed that it was going to be miniature of no more then 4 pounds and months later it turned out that he was a regular size 8.5 pound Maltese but I was already in love with him so I didn't have the heart to return him. When I first came to Empire and inquired about a mini Yorkie they assured me that what I wanted I would get- they let me stay with the chosen one for about half hour before I took her home. And yea after a year she was only 3 pounds and so so lovable. It was worth the $2000 I paid for her back then. Treat you with manners I called about a Shiba Inu and the man seemed very short tempered with me. I asked him very general questions, How old is the puppy? What is your health guarantee? Can you provide breeder information? They have a "if you're not buying the puppy get out of my face" attitude. When I asked to see the dog, he said "are you ready to put down a deposit?" The dog wasn't going to be ready to go home for another three weeks and I hadn't even seen the dog yet... or been provided with breeder information. That is a very unreasonable thing to assume that I would give you money for a deposit. Have not purchased a puppy from here. Was inquiring via their Facebook messenger how to come in and view puppies. With the pandemic I realize that many shops are only accepting reservations. I was surprised to learn that they only supplied pictures of the puppies over the internet and would only make a reservation once you wanted to purchase. I got my Bichon, Snowball, back in 2013. He is now almost 9. I had been to multiple different stores at that time and Empire Puppies was the only store who had 2 Bichon in store, a boy and a girl. I ended up getting the boy. He didn't act like the other puppies in the windows, running around. He was nervous and a little scared, but I took him anyways. It took him a few days before his real personality came out, and he was acting like a crazy puppy running around the house. Almost 9 years later, he is very healthy. He's a bit bigger than your average Bichon, but I prefer it over the dainty dogs. I'm also planning on getting another dog since one of my other dogs passed away a few months ago. The main reason Empire gets five stars from me is just because how awesome my puppy truly is...and without them, I'd never have known him. I'm from Chicago, but came to NYC in October 2009 to deal with a family situation, and was bummed. Ironically, in coming out to NYC so quickly, I left my cat with someone who was irresponsible and lost him immediately after, and was really upset. My best friend heard about my situation and was doing his best to cheer me up but nothing was working. So, a few days later, I'm bumming around in Flushing (where I was staying) and he calls my phone, telling me to go to this address. I say okay, and do so. To my surprise, the address is Empire Puppies. I go inside, and the place was tiny but I did notice that day there was practically no overcrowding of the cages. Might have been a special day, but I don't know. I also didn't notice an odor or anything like that. So, I get there and tell the guy at the counter that I was told to come there by my best friend "Bob". Immediately, the guy says, "Oh you're Ashley! Come with me." He leads to me a kennel that held the cutest little black and white havamalt (half havanese, half maltese) puppy in it. This said puppy had a big red ribbon around his neck, with a card attached. The card read, "Here's something I know can cheer you up, if you want it, it's yours." WOW. Sweetest thing my BFF has ever done, and if you knew him, you'd know sweet isn't in his profile. Truth was, last thing I wanted was a dog, especially after losing my beloved cat, but I figured that I should at least meet the little guy. When the guy put him in the little enclosure on the floor, he just ran right to me, put his front paws on me and started whining. So I picked him up and not only did he wash my entire face, he settled himself so that he was wrapped around me like a little scarf. (To this day, he does that and only does it with me). At the time he was four pounds and scruffy, and so I decided on a whim to take him with me. My best friend had paid for the dog, a crate, puppy pads, food, vitamins, treats, and a food dish so I was all set. We left, and I named him Jackson in the car as Michael Jackson was the only music that kept him calm enough to not want to run into my lap. As far as Empire, they offered a free vet visit with their vet, but I declined because I knew I was taking him back to Chicago with me and already had a vet I used for my cat. I did get him looked at in NYC and he had no coughing, eye tearing or other problems that plague small dogs. While in NY, I thought he was very hard to potty train, but as soon as we got to Chicago a few days later, he immediately went outside and had FIVE mistakes in the span of five weeks. Who else that owns a dog can say that?! I remember each one specifically because I was the one cleaning them. Basically, this dog is smart. My mother will say to him "Go to Ashley" and he will come sit right by me. I'll tell him "Go to Carole (my mom)" and he goes right to her. If these are the kind of dogs that Empire gets, kudos to them! Medically, the only issue Jackson has ever had was a puppy tooth that had to be removed. That's IT! Other than the occasional cold, he's always been in excellent health. Weird fact- Jackson is supposedly a Havanese/Maltese mix, but he acts, looks and behaves like a Havanese. I intend on getting a DNA test for him, just to know for sure. I'm not complaining, because Jackson is my BAF (Best Animal Friend) but I find that interesting. They also said that he'd be brown and white and probably max out at around 10 pounds. He's about 10 pounds now, but he's definitely not brown, he kept his black and white coloring. Interesting also is the black heart pattern that has emerged in his side. It's very distinctive and just goes to his sweet personality. I recommend Empire just because Jackson is so great and I'm blessed to have him in my life. I also recommend them for working with my best friend, who isn't exactly Mr. Nice Guy. If I ever wanted another puppy, I'd seriously consider flying there just to see if I could find one of Jackson's family members. I am TRULY happy and satisfied, and this review comes from a transaction in October 2009, so while I'm not as current as other reviewers, I can speak to long term issues. I didn't go downstairs, and I didn't see any sad puppies. Actually every dog there seemed kind of puppy like, bouncing around and happy. I don't know what it's like now. I brought my Pomeranian here. I came to this store because my friend brought her Pomeranian here. My visit at Empire Puppies to me was great. The worker greeted us and told us if we needed help to let him know. I knew the first visit I just wanted to look around and see what is out there. The worker didn't hover over us or tried to sell us a puppy. He answered all my questions and gave me his card when I'm ready. I went home and thought it over for a few days. The second visit the worker remembered me. I picked out Toby that day. The worker went to the back to clean him, gave me all his paperworks, medicines, food and pads. This place doesn't smell like a lot of other puppy places I've been to. The puppies on display are treated well as far as we could tell and are all oh-so-cute. We ended up getting a Mini American Eskimo (though the little guy is not so little) after my brother had a good experience with a Shiba Inu he purchased from them a year ago. If it's your first puppy, they should be able to put your mind at ease. They were patient with questions and us playing with the pups before making our choice. We eventually were able to negotiate a discount with the owner and walked out the same day with the newest member of our family. Their puppies come with papers and they guarantee their health for a couple weeks, so that's good. The first vet visit is free if you decide to use their recommended vet for a first check-up. I would ignore their puppy selection on their website as it's no guarantee that they will have the types listed (they're puppies after all, not some grocery item), so call in advance or go visit in person if you're looking for something specific. I would also ignore the banner over their storefront stating a sale of $299 and $399 for puppies. Overall, we had a great experience with the owner, Will, and staff and our little guy is almost an adult and hasn't had any health problems. Healthy, happy, and loveable as can be. About 5 years ago, I bought a Pomeranian-Shih Tzu Mix and was a first time dog owner. I fell in love immediately and was so happy to take my little guy home. It was within my first week that I started having problems. My dog came with an ear infection although I was told that he was in perfect health and that he had seen a vet not too long ago for his vaccines. I was very disappointed. Also, I was told that my dog would grow up to be 10 pounds maximum as he got older but he was already 8.5 pounds at 4 months. He is currently 5 years old and weighs in at 21 pounds as a medium sized dog. There is a lot of false advertising and I do not believe that these dogs come from reliable sources. They don't seem to have best interest of these animals. In the end of the day, Empire Puppies is a business and is only concerned about making a profit. read more

After a year and a half of getting my baby from Empire Puppies, I've decided to write a review on my experience. The overall experience from this place was pretty decent. When I had my heart set to buying a puppy from a pet store, I already knew I had to go through a lot of problems. First of all, they set the prices of the puppies atleast $200 higher than what they would charge you. For example, my puppy was $1000 to start with, but because I paid in cash, they let me bargain down to $850. The downside of this place is that the person gave me "cough medicine" to bring home just incase. Why would there be a just incase unless they already knew that the dog was sick ? But, I still did not give up on my puppy. I took him back home & did bring him to my own local pet instead of the vet they were affiliated with. After of a week of medicine & love.. my puppy is healthy and clean ! I love him to death & did not regret buying from Empire Puppies. But do have a second thought on buying a puppy from this place or any pet stores if you do not plan on spending the money or time on "fixing" the dog! :) read more

Fast forward two months later, she is healthy, growing, and an absolute pleasure to be with. Took her to two different vets which one was recommended by the shop, and my own personal family vet. Well, I did buy my puppy here, and I have to say have been truly pleased. Not only is my cocker spaniel healthy and beautiful, but he has the best temperament, is easy to train and happy. We visited Empire Puppies twice in searching for a dog. We also went to breeders, rescue places, other stores, and the pound. This place did not smell bad, the dogs looked happy and clean, and they answered all our questions patiently. When the pup we eventually picked peed on us, they were immediately there to clean up after him. We knew it was love after he christened us... Anyway, we completed the purchase and also bought our "start-up supplies" which they outlined for us. We bought a crate, the food the pup is used to eating, some vitamins, a leash, brush, etc. They told me some of what to expect, outlined potty training techniques and told us kennel cough might be a possibility. They also pay for the first medical visit - but you have to go to their vet in Queens. Even after having the pup for a few weeks, they allowed us to exchange a few items that we found unnecessary. I would recommend Empire Puppies to anyone - they are much cheaper than the city UES places, the dogs have AKA papers, and my dog was healthy and happy. read more

Our dog was completely healthy from the minute we took her home. Having heard horror stories about health conditions of pet stores, I felt that this shop deserved a positive review. I will say that the prices are high but there is a little room to haggle. Originally priced at $1400.00 we got our puppy for $1200.00 plus tax with a microchip. My husband and I were looking for Klee Kai and I found this place, I called and they told us that we can come and check the puppies whenever we want. We went there it was like 1.5 hour drive. First we got in and saw all the puppies in tiny cages, ( like the smallest cages you can imagine) when we asked to play with the puppy he told us that we can only hold them and they are not allowed to be on the floor, which is crazy because puppies were 4 months old when I asked for the reason he told me that they are still so small to be on the ground which is crazy, any dog owner will know that 4 months old for a puppy to walk on the ground. Then they gave us the puppy to hold, poor puppy was terrified, she was shaking like crazy then I asked to hold another one, and that one did the same think, shaking like crazy and whenever I touch him to calm him down I realized that he was afraid of my hand. Then i asked him why they were so afraid. He told me it was normal, but guys we've been to a lot of pet shop and have never experienced such a thing, puppies were always playful and happy to be out of their cage. My husband even saw a sleeping puppy and thought he was dead because the place feels like it's possible to see a dead puppy. This place was very creepy and I don't know what they are doing to their animals but the animals are terrified of humans because of them. It was such an horrible experience. i bought my first dog here in june and am happy with my decision. after reading the reviews on yelp, i thought they were worth a visit. i had traveled to numerous stores on long island hoping to find a hybrid puppy under $1000 and this store was the first i felt comfortable leaving a deposit with. after speaking with a return customer who was browsing for her second dog, i had the endorsement i needed. i asked if they could work with their breeders to find a hava apso (half havanese, half lhasa apso) and they delivered in the time frame i was looking for. i must say, what struck me the most was the cleanliness of the store. how many times have you visited a pet shop and have been turned off by the smell? at empire puppies, they're immaculate. however, being an excited, new dog owner, i had not examined her maybe the way i should. after two weeks, we were dealing with a case of fleas. i can't say for sure if they're from this shop (i also have a cat who was not exhibiting any symptoms- cats sometimes don't), but i advise new owners to carefully inspect their pet before they go home. 3 months in, olive is a happy, healthy little pup. our vet agrees too. read more

The puppies here are really sad!! They are stuck inside a little box, with no room to move. They have very little air to breathe and some of the puppies are sick. I bought a "chihuahua" from them before and it wasn't even a chihuahua. He obviously had kennel cough and so do the other dogs in the store. My "chihuahua" had major aggression problems. It bit my little sister in the leg, and refused to let it go until TWO of us yanked it off her. She was bleeding like crazy. For a "chihuahua" puppy, it was really strong. We kept him longer and he got bigger and more aggressive, until he was the size of an Alaskan Eskimo. One of our friends took him in when we could no longer take care of him because he was so aggressive. This store guaranteed us that it was a chihuahua puppy and that it was very quiet and calm. After searching online for a decently priced toy dog for months, I ran across Empire's website, where they advertised an amazing array of puppies for pretty exceptional prices. I decided to stop by and see for myself since it wasn't that long of a drive, but when I arrived, I found the physical store was nothing like the online store. The inventories didn't even correspond with one another; the website advertised puppies they didn't even have in stock, and the in store prices were about 3 or 4 hundred dollars more than what was printed on the website. I was extremely disappointed, but after about 45 minutes of debating, Willie, one of the employees, showed me a Yorkie pup, and it was love at first sight. When it came time to put her back in the cage, I almost couldn't let go, and she whined and whined once he finally got her back in. He asked for 800$, plus tax, for the pup, but once I mentioned the price on the website, he instantly dropped down to 550. Nonetheless, we went home together that day, and I've never been happier. She's happy and healthy, and naturally, the best puppy in the world ! I'm not sure if I'd recommend them to someone else, but I personally think I came out on top. I said gee that's a big difference can you come down to 750. We negotiated ans i was willing to pay 800. My husband was in my ear about the vet check up bed food all the extras. This puppy was a companion for my puppy at home. A pretty expensive companion at that. I told him I would think about it a little longer. I go to the car to start researching Maltese breeders in ny. Nextdaypets.com pops up. Low and behold a breeder in NYC with a male Maltese puppy for $710.00. I look at the breeders website And it's EMPIRE PUPPY. I called the guy right away and asked about the 9 week old puppy (same age as the Maltese I was looking at btw) he said oh that's a different pup. Yeah. Okay. I was not born yesterday and I don appreciate being upcharge $300 based on emotion. I say all this to say, if you have a gut feeling about something just go with it. read more

First and foremost I would like to say that I am surprised with all the bad reviews. I had a very positive experience at Empire Puppies. I bought my shih-poo here last Friday and she is a happy and well adjusted puppy. She is extremely sociable with people as well as other animals (dogs and cats ). I found the staff to be both courteous and helpful. They did not make me feel rushed at all and answered all the questions that I had. Mind you I was there for about an hour playing and contemplating purchasing the puppy, not once did they make me feel rushed or unwelcome. They allowed me the time to make the decision on my own. I am so glad that I purchased a puppy from them. She has a great disposition and is extremely sociable. This shows me that she was well taken care of while in their care. Thank God my experience was good! I purchased a Chihuahua from empire the price tag was $849 and with a little haggling I got him for $600 straight. Every where else chihuahuas are going for $1200 or better and trust me I've been to many puppy shops. I can't believe that people actually think Empire is so expensive, anyway my puppy is now 3yrs old and going strong. Short and sweet, I went to Empire Puppies on the 5th of March and had a terrible experience. The staff at the location were not very helpful, they were rude and basically didn't care. I will not come back and would hope that others read this and the 30 plus other reviews before purchasing here. read more

I drove to empire puppies and the owner was an hour late opening the store. Next thing is after it was opened the puppies are in wire cages so that the poop can fall below them. The store WREAKED of Poop after the puppy area was opened for a short while. The dogs are living in deplorable conditions. read more

Very dishonest establishment. I bought a shiba inu from this place which they claim was a pure breed. When the shiba grew older the blackish coating appeared and from what I know pure shiba come in only 3 color types, black and white, tan and white , cream . My tan and white shiba now has blackish coating which means he is part German Shepherd. read more
