The owners are super nice and friendly and very helpful at helping you get started with your new pet. I got many fish from here and they're still thriving well today. You have to wonder why this place is still open for business. The moment I opened the doors and stepped inside, the foul odor had already entered my nose. As I was walking through the store to get onto the staircase, I see they've been putting air fresheners out (and yet the smell is still pungent, can you believe that?!) After reaching the puppies, you can see how terrible their living conditions were. There were roaches running around inside from cage to cage. You can tell which puppies had been there for a while and which ones had newly arrived. Their poodles had been there for a while. They looked so depressed and definitely needed baths. I also found the staff handling the puppies (really don't know if the person I am referring to is just a staff or is the owner of the place) to be very rude. I had a good experience at this pet shop. Right now they have a 'if you come in you must buy something' policy which might be due to COV19. I came in to buy a pet carrier and found a very cute double sided one with flaps for a good price. They have a huge selection of pet supplies and many pets too but no cats to adopt. The man who worked there was very helpful and was open to conversation about pets. The woman who worked there was quiet and seems more business oriented but thats okay, I really don't mind. There was a younger lady that seemed nice too. I also saw the owners British Short hair cat that looked like the sweetest thing!! I get the feeling that this place does care about animals but they need more lighting, possibly more staff for animal care and some more organizing. read more

If you care about the health of your dog, do not buy a puppy here. They just sold a malti-poo to us with blood coming out of his rectum. In addition, there was a fungus on the dogs nose. When the puppy was brought back after a few days because it was in pain, they refused to take it back. Ultimately they gave back $1,300 out of the $1,800 paid. As far as i'm concerned, they sold a diseased puppy and refused to do what any respectful puppy retailer would do. It cost us $500, and I am going to do what I can to have this store investigated by New York City and the Animal Control Board. They work with a veterinarian and your overall health check is free. I usually go elsewhere but I happened upon this place. Got some small discounts. Not gonna lie I know these puppies are from mills but still this place is quite clean, has an odd smell on the first floor since the puppies are located on the second, I fell in love with one of the shih tzu puppies and I wish I could get it but they are very expensive especially considering they came from dirty places made to produce puppies. I bought my great toy Pomeranian here. Although he was a bit pricey he came chipped, with AKC registration papers as well as his breeders information. Place was not filthy just a little run down and dark upstairs. I also feel that most puppies in cages always look sad. Staff was very helpful. Owner gave me a free cage and some food recommendations. The food he recommended was all natural and we continue to give our dog the same brand. It keeps him regular. They also recommended us to a great vet who is been wonderful with our puppy. We even called back about two weeks later when our puppy had a little cough. They gave us medicine for free that the vet approved. It would be great to see the puppies in an open space but to my understanding this place sells their puppies fast. This place is just horrible - please don't come here. Not professional - staff here are INCREDIBLY RUDE AND DISHONEST. Owner stays in his office upstairs, and smokes in the same vicinity as the kittens and puppies. WHY? I went in on different occasions asking about a specific puppy I had seen, and he gave me a different answer every time. One second he said, "that puppy is not available" and when I countered with another question, he said "oh my friend was supposed to come pick up that dog yesterday, but didn't come. I can bring him out if you want." So is the pup available or not? Pups were crammed in small cages - I saw 4 corgis in one cage... Lady at front desk also has the worse attitude / tone. I honestly think they were getting really annoyed at me for asking a lot of questions (I have 2 dogs, I think I know my stuff) - they didn't like me poking around. All in all, can't believe this place is still running after all these years. Take your window shopping across the street to Q Puppies, where they truly care about all the animals they bring in. I liked coming here cause it really different from other pet stores you go to. There are lots of fishes of course since it's called Northern Aquarium BUT! they have puppies and a few smaller animals like hamsters. They have many selection of fishes and unlike other aquarium places or pet stores they also sell fishes that are HUGE!!!! Sometimes you would be amazed that a certain fish can grow that big and that the place even carries it. Of course the prices would be pricey but the owners and workers (well the older ones not the younger people that worked there) knows their stuffs. My boyfriend would have questions and they would be straight forward about if it's a good idea or not and help you out. They are honest and aren't like petco, I'm not saying petco is a bad place or the workers don't know what they are doing. BUT a lot of times I would see that fishes they carry are injuries, infected with something which in turns will harm the other fishes, and i love this one (not really it's a joke) how there would be a fish that's died and the other fishes are eating it. Northern aquarium does not have that and I feel that they truly take care of their fishes. But the other animals that they have...that's a different story. They got some puppies upstairs but it is super smelly. Yeah, I know dogs tend to be like that but it's so bad plus even when they put one small dog in a cage downstairs the dog smelled. There were only little poo present at the time too. They got little hamster but all confined in a see through plastic box. A friend even told me how she got a hamster there once and the hamster was missing a leg...what...the..fuck?! So overall be careful what you purchase here mostly directly it towards the animals/fishes. read more

Something just seems off about this place..the whole environment upstairs where the dogs are just presents an eerie vibe and it all seems very old and unkempt. The dogs look miserable every time I stopped by and I can't help but just feel bad for them. This pet shop is a fraud!!! They sold me a pup that they stated was a mini breed and it is now a full grown hugeeeeeee dog. I was not ready for a full grown dog in my small apartment but I decided to keep him because I had fallen in love with him. We got our beloved Shiba Inu here, but he did not have an easy first few months when we brought him home. It was personally my first time purchasing a pet from a store as I have grown up with 3 other dogs.. Anyways.. He was sick for a few months. We called the store and told them and they gave us medicine for him.. and indicated that it happens often. NO, it only happens because your definitely kept him in filthy conditions. Why else would he be coughing his lungs out.. and he is essentially a puppy mill dog. What does that mean? He was bred from inhumane conditions. I purchased an 8 week old Siberian husky from this store. When purchasing him, I was told he would be covered for his veterinarian cost because this store had close ties with the vet that they recommended me to take my dog to for his shots that he was supposed to get in a few weeks( rabies shot). I was also told he had all the other vaccines he needed and that was the only one he lacked. It was a complete lie.The day I brought him home, he was sleeping a lot and looked a little down. He also had stitches on his stomach that didn't heal. I was told by the woman in the store that he would have diarrhea and be a little off for the first couple of days since he had to be adjusted to his new environment. The day after, my puppy had the worst fever ever and he was vomiting and had diarrhea. He had green mucus by the clumps coming out of his nose and nonstop sneezing and gagging. I called the woman at the store who sold me him and she told me it was normal. I brought him back to the store which she didn't expect to have him checked out there and I was offered something for his cold (a tiny bottle of antibiotic) and was told to go to a vet that had close ties with their store. As the woman was trying to get me an appointment, there was nothing available until a few days after. I was not going to wait a week to get my dog help. I was already a step ahead when I saw my puppy was sick and took my pup to a vet of my choice the next day. I was told by the vet that he had pneumonia and his fever was not normal. This dog was very sick and it was going to cost me a lot to get him better. He needed to be taken to a animal hospital ASAP where he would be monitored. This really scared me because I really thought I was bringing home a healthy puppy. I got attached to him in 2 days and was so sad I had to give him up because he was so sickly. If anybody has a pet they know veterinary and hospital bills are CHEAP. After the vet the next day I brought the dog back to the store and showed them the paperwork and they had no choice but to take him back and refund me my money which I was lucky for. But if your willing to buy a dog, I would not take a look in those store. There are way better puppy mills who breed dogs and rake well care of them. This store has dogs squishing one another in cages and they ingest one another's poop in the cages they sleep in. It smells completely disgusting and animals are so innocent. I feel so bad for the animals in that pet store. They need to be reported ASAP before somebody else buys a sick animal and gets stuck with a nightmare. I wouldn't recommended this place to anyone really, but most especially to dog owners. I have suspicions that their puppy providers are puppy mill owners... and no one should support such cruelty. To be honest if you want a dog go adopt, there are even pure breed rescues out there if you're seeking a particular breed. But yeah, back to the store. The location is nicely located near the busy area of Flushing although it's sort of off to a corner where you wouldn't think of finding a pet store. The staff aren't unpleasant but they also aren't very out going or friendly. The store offers a myriad of supplies but most of the brands are the lowest grade you can get when you look at the food selection. Most of the items also look outdated. The organization of the store is a mess when it comes to the supplies because bird supplies is mixed up with small mammal stuff and dog etc.... there's no straight forward aisle for a particular category of animal. Next are the animals themselves. They carry mostly puppies, fish, some birds, and small mammals. I don't recall seeing any reptiles for sale though. The fish and small mammals seem like the better cared for of the animals because the puppies are constantly caged up in small uncomfortable cages and don't look well socialized. Most often you can't even see the puppies because they're caged up up stairs aside from one or two puppies being presented in the cage down stairs. The birds are in such a weird spot in the store that they almost seem inaccessible so I can't really judge their condition yet alone enjoy them. The store just seems stale, outdated, and crammed. It's very dimly lit. There is also a heavy musky dirty air feeling about the store too. This place really can use a renovation, some ventilation, and sun light. Overall it's just not a pleasant place to go to. If you really want some pet supplies or pets just go to the Petland that's less than a few blocks away from this place or the Petco at College Point. read more

I would give 0 stars if it were possible. The staff are friendly, but only if you are really interested in buying something. The store focuses mainly on fish. Their other animals seem to be treated VERY poorly. For example, I would always see one or two dogs tied up in a small cage, off the side somewhere in the store. The dogs are usually crying (whining, whimpering) and depressed. Most likely from loneliness. The back of the store is absolutely FILTHY. Rabbits are kept in cages that are way too small for comfort, swimming around in their own urine. The area smells strongly of animal feces, and the last time i went there, CIGARETTE SMOKE. Somebody ( I'm definitely pointing fingers at the staff here.) was smoking either downstairs or in the back. I bought a baby rabbit from here (about 2 months old). I took her to the vet and had to buy medicine for her. She passed away from a heart attack and i only had her for a little less than five days. Apparently, she was very ill for a long time because the store did not take care of her properly at all. Sure, it was probably my fault for buying a sick rabbit from a filthy pet store, but I wasn't too aware of how filthy the place actually was until a few days after i purchased her, when i returned to buy a litter box. They did not tell me she was ill. In fact, they made it seem as if she were perfectly healthy. Lesson learned, i will interrogate staff before ever purchasing an animal again. Got my baby Myla from here. Right place right time situation! Shopping for a Klee Kai wasn't easy as many breeders had a long wait time and were very hard to communicate with. I did some searching through different pet shops within Queens and LI area and found that they either did not have the breed or required down payments and a few weeks wait time. I stumbled upon northern aquarium searching for a pomsky, instead I find this little princess sitting there. It just so happened that northern aquarium received her the night before. As it was my first time shopping for a pup in a pet store I was extremely skeptical and cautious. The owner Jimmy was very straight to the point, knowledgeable about his pups, brought her out to the play pen and let me take a look at all the paper work and answered any questions I had. Once I knew I was taking her home Jimmy was able to give me a small discount and gave me a small starter kit with food and vitamins. The younger gentlemen downstairs (don't recall the name) was also very helpful and was giving me a few tips on breaking her into her new home and whatnot. They do work with a vet however, based on my skepticism about pet shops I decided to take her to Dr. Benson at the pet doctor of flushing (amazing vet) and after a stool sample and a check up she was deemed healthy. I bought my poodle puppy here last Sunday. Biggest mistake! He looked healthy but after four days, he starts vomiting and has diarrhea. We had him checked by a veterinarian and was told he needed to get emergency care. We went back to this shop immediately after the puppy was checked since it's still within the 14 days of the "puppy lemon law", which states that they should cover medical expenses up to the cost of the dog. Upon arriving there, we explain everything to the two girls working there. They said it was just a "common cold" and gave us "medicine", which was only chinese medicine. Why did I not read the review before purchasing a puppy? And this was the ONLY time I didn't look up a place before going. I went to a couple of other pet shops around the area according to other YELP reviews and after not being able to find a puppy I liked, I stopped by this store to have a look at the dogs. I asked to hold the puppy I liked, oh boy, she stinked so bad. And I asked the gentleman who was selling me the puppy, "You are not going to sell a puppy that smells this bad right?" He said, "If someone takes it, we are going to give them a shower." I felt in love with a Toy Poodle and I decided to purchase it without a careful consideration with a bunch of toys, pee pads and yadiyadiya. 'Cookie' has became so attached to my Fiance and I already and it's only been two days. The first night we brought her, she was nothing but coughing all day. Dry cough and seemed like she wanted to throw up but she didn't. Her heartbeat was unusually fast and seemed like she was having a hard time breathing. I immediately took her to the vet and found out she had an infection. Respiratory infection or Kennel Cough. You can easily get it from being with a bunch of dogs in a cage where the environment is poor, full of bacteria and viruses. I should've known better when the place was stinking and so was my pup. The up-to-date shot that was supposed to be taken was left for me to handle which I did today along with another shot PLUS antibiotic shot for the infection. I'm home taking care of this dog 24/7 without leaving her out of my sight. Hope my love will heal this cute pup and all I can do is wish my pup to grow healthy and live long. :( Update I got the rest result from her poop result, and she was positive for Giardia and Coccidia. Had to drive to Flusing to the vet again to pick up the medicine. Called the store many times but the phone wouldn't work. I was going to have them reimburse the bill for the medicine. However, there is no way to get in contact with them. I'm just going to think it as I saved a puppy from that store. It was going to be remained untreated and with all three infections and diseases, she would've died in the store. PUPPY IS DEAD. PUPPY WE BOUGHT DIED IN 5 DAYS: My husband and I were looking for a boston terrier puppy. We read very good reviews about Q Puppies across the street. We went there, but they had no boston terriers so we decided to cross the street and try Northern Aquarium Pets, BIGGEST MISTAKE WE EVER MADE. They had a boston terrier (14 weeks old) and we fell in love with him. They reviewed much paperwork with us...if he gets diarrhea or vomiting..advice on what to do. They gave us a contract stating "no cash refunds." The contract stated if the dog is sick or dies within 14 days, they would give us a new dog. We brought him home 3/28...on 3/29 he started vomiting and loose stools. We gave him the same Royal Canin food they told us they were feeding him at the store. We did not change his diet. By 3/30, he was lethargic and continued vomiting and watery diarrhea. He could not keep anything down. He was drinking water, but vomiting continuous. He was sleeping all the time, then vomiting, then diarrhea, it was a vicious cycle. He was lethargic and unhappy. By the evening on 3/30..the watery brown diarrhea became bloody diarrhea. Still he could not even keep water down, and had not eaten since Sunday 3/29 in the morning. On 3/31, we took him to the local Brooklyn Vet Group, who gave symptomatic treatment for vomiting. They gave saline on the skin for hydration and 2 anti nausea anti vomiting injections. They were unable to get a stool sample because it was all liquid blood. The doctor stated he should not vomit again after few hours. That night the puppy continued to drink water, still had not eaten since 3/29. Had continuous vomiting. Continued bloody water diarrhea all over the house and was very lethargic. We called the pet store and spoke with Meiling, who stated we could bring the puppy to her (it was 8pm at night). We told her the symptoms of the puppy and she said "It sounds like Parvo." We asked her if she would be with the puppy overnight to care for him. She said no, that she would leave the dog in the cage overnight and monitor him in the morning. We told her the puppy could die within hours. He needed to go to the hospital. She replied "Don't go to the hospital, it's to expensive. If he dies, we give you new dog." She kept repeating that they are not responsible for any vet bills. Wow really sympathetic, huh? So we took him to Blue Pearl Animal Hospital on the eve of 3/31, where he was hospitalized on IV, multiple anti vomiting meds, antibiotics, etc. He was in the ICU. With all the care the hospital provided from the eve on 3/31 to evening on 4/1, the puppy continued to decline, continued vomiting and non stop bloody diarrhea. The doctors concluded that the puppy came from the store with a viral infection which had traveled to the blood. The dog turned septic (infection in the blood). We went to see him on the evening of 4/1, and he couldn't even move or open his eyes. You could tell he was in pain. All the antibiotics and IV fluids and other meds were not working. He continued to decline. The doctor said his belly was filling with fluid and the next step would be to stick a tube down his nose into his belly to suck out all the fluids. The doctor said the puppy most likely would not survive after all these painful treatments. We had to euthanize the puppy on the evening of 4/1. It broke our hearts, but we chose to end his suffering. He was 14 weeks old. This was heartbreaking. We love pets like family. We received a Certificate For Unfit To Sell from the doctor at the hospital. We notified the pet store. They told us they would give us a new dog, but not responsible for any vet bills. We contacted the Dept of Agriculture and made a formal complaint. We went prepared to the pet store with the printed out law from the Dept of Agriculture, the Certificate of Unfit to sell from the hospital and all the vet and hospital bills. When we walked in to the pet store, Meiling stated we are not responsible for vet bills, but we will give you a new dog. We told her we did not want another dog. We took out all the documentation and told her we spoke with the Dept of Agriculture. I believe she knew that we knew what we were talking about. They reimbursed us the cost of the dog $1137.00 and half of the vet and hospital bills $1009.00. We lost about $1100.00. The thing that really disgusted us was that Meiling kept saying, "You never know what can happen with LIVESTOCK." Livestock? This is a puppy for God sakes. We are currently having the puppy cremated and will bury him with our other pets at Bide a wee pet cemetery. We are pet lovers and this really broke our heart and we don't wish anything like this to happen to anyone else. We are still torn up about it and will be very sad for a very long time. We had wished to see this puppy grow up and be our best friend. I don't think this shop is clean. They have a play room for the dogs where they all play together. Bad customer service on 2nd floor where the puppies and supposedly "kittens" are held. Asked to see a poodle and the poor dog was pulled out of the cage and carelessly tossed back like a sack of potatoes when I returned it to the owner. Seriously... ? The cages were dirty, dogs were dirty and downstairs had a few dogs at the window being roasted by the sun with no toys to play with. DONT GO HERE ! Literally the most RUDE customer service ever, I remember one time walking in just to look at the puppies there was a guy with a good English accent and he was nice at that time . Now today I go there to actually purchase items for my aquarium and it was the same guy and I had talked to him in a nice way trying to learn more about what to purchase for my salt water aquarium and simply had told me in such a rude way to not even bother and that I won't be able to take care of it. Like fucking excuse me I'm here as a customer to put money in your pockets. I never was rude to you and just wanted to buy stuff after the rude reply and I just browsed by myself with absolute no help. with the disgusting odor and the lack of respect I left less that 5 minutes in that stores. Idk what's wrong with that guy either he is fucked up in the head or bipolar af ridiculous. The only reason why I am giving this place two stars is because it is primarily suppose to be a fish store and I assume the fish are relatively happy swimming around in their tanks on the ground floor. I'd heard from some girls at the other pet store I visited say that there were puppies here so I came, but had to go searching for them myself and ended up finding them on the second floor. There were all these puppies in individual cages with metal bars stacked on top of each other looking depressed and unhealthy and utterly bored. I'd just popped up there and none of them even moved or acknowledged me. The place smelled and there appeared to be no air circulation. I asked a man on the floor about a particular breed and he told me that he had seen 20-something more puppies. And I said, "oh, there are 20-something puppies here?" And he was like, "no, I saw 20-something puppies and they are coming Tuesday night.". And all I could think was, "from where? why at night? and are we really going to talk about them like they are inventory?" But I didn't ask any questions or ask to see any of the puppies and just left. My experience here just thoroughly bothered me and I just had to get out of there and away from how I'd always imagined a pet store at its worst (with the exception of the fish). read more

I wish I can give this place no stars but unfortunately I cannot. I want to advise you guys to not buy your puppies from here because they truly do not care for their dogs. They do not even have a sales person who monitors their puppies. Sad but the truth. Def do not buy any dog that the owner takes out from the back. read more
