Sadly, I can tell things have changed a bit since the original location, food wise. I miss that the food use to be cooked to order. I am definitely the person that will wait however long it takes if I can get it fresh. I'm not a fan at all of heat lamp, reheated or warmed up food. I'm a food snob like that Shrimp Empanada Not the golden brown outside that I am use to, a bit darker than the last time. Good crust. The peppers inside were mushy. Good seasoning. They still had a great amount of cheese inside which was the best part about it. The shrimp amount was exactly 5 as the menu states. Street Corn Presentation was very nice. Corn was tough and cold. Like no warmth at all. Mango Bread Pudding A very large slice for the price point. The garnish on it was passed its prime. The bread pudding was mushy and flavorless. The cream sauce was nice. Mango bits were placed on top, none cooked in it. It was okay. If I hadn't been to the original location seeing the owner throw down in the kitchen, having the mouth watering food experience that I had then I probably wouldn't be as disappointed about the food this visit. Location It's a nice vibe in the spot, comfy seats, and good music. Staff are extremely friendly and welcoming. If you knew and loved the Empanada Lady when she was at Motorhouse, watch out because she's got her own space now and it is worth the trip downtown. The empanadas were delicious. And also huge. I was expecting the little hand held ones like you get from the farmers market, but these were substantial. Two would be a meal for an average person. The beef was my favorite, although I can't wait to come back and try the rest. We also ordered a waffle, since it was brunch, and it beat expectations - both crispy and fluffy, and it came with honey instead of syrup, which was a very nice touch. There was also a DJ, though I'm not sure if he's just there for Sunday brunch. The physical space is also exquisite. From the outside it is very unassuming, but the inside is very thoughtfully designed. It looks like a hip upscale restaurant, but the vibe is very chill. The bar is surrounded by bright, colorful velvet seashell bar stools, which match the neon sofas and half circle armchairs in the lounge area. The walls are black and pink and there are gold accents everywhere You're gonna want to take some pictures because the space is instagram-worthy. I had the roasted salmon with potatoes and eggs and a beef empanada. The potatoes were too salty and I didn't really care for the mix that came on top of the salmon. The salmon itself was perfectly done! The beef empanada was really good, and I honestly could've had that as a meal by itself. They were out of red sangria so I tried the white. I didn't like it at all. I am used to my sangria coming with fruit. This just had some kind of flavored syrup in it with a lemon garnish. Stopped in and did a large order for my coworkers and I. I even messaged the owner on IG to "warn" her in advance. I ordered the pork, chicken and crab. These things are huge! Very crispy, chewy, savory and packed! All flavors distinctly unique. By far my 2 faves were the crab and chicken! Upgrading my review to 4 stars in view of good customer service which offered a partial refund and the quality of the food. ORIGINAL: First time ordering. I'm giving only one star because they screwed up my take-out order. I ordered shrimp empanada (and "shrimp" was written on the container). However, it was not shrimp, probably chicken. Tasted good but I ended up being overcharged by $3 since it was not shrimp. Portion size was good. Also ordered Thai spicey string beans. They were also good but portion size was on the small side. Like a lot of establishments, bottomless isn't really bottomless when they only refill a glass at a time (we did someone later on w. a carafe). 45 min into ordering the bottomless lemon drop, I opted to cancel it because the sole bartender was making drinks, taking orders and serving pplmat tables. No way I'm drinking 4 drinks in 45min. After I canceled the order, my server wasn't as attentive.. Overall the food was ok. Not something that I would specifically come again for, but the empanada appetizer was good. Then the bill comes and there's a "love" charge for 15% that the server acted like he didn't know what it was. I would rather full disclosure then lying about it or hoping I wouldn't see that charge on top of the tip. Basically I got hit was an extra $10 on top of gratuity. Just seems like a sneaky surcharge. To be fair, I'd say a 3.3 It was a clean establishment,nice vibes, and full Empanadas. The downside is that it took some time for the food to be served, and it was overcooked. I get it's busy. That's forgivable. But on something like an empanada, there's not a lot of room for error. If it's burnt, the whole thing tastes burned. The crab empanada was meaty. I've been following The Empandana Lady for a while now and definitely want to try a few of her dishes. Conveniently located right off of North Ave in the Motor House, it was very easy to find. The space is open, inviting and had the perfect music to fit the vibe. I was greeted by one of the staff members/chef who was preparing orders. I decided to go with the "Just Enough for You" platter option. This comes with 3 empandanas, 2 sides (plantains and rice and beans) and 1 cupcake (coquito). I originally thought the price was steep (treat ya self ) before I received my order; however this was quickly changed once my food came out. I've had many empandanas in my day and these are a good size and nicely filled. One, surprisingly, made me full! All were so delicious that I took leftovers to my family and ordered and a shrimp empandana to go. The rice and beans were just okay, but I have been spoiled with this so it's not a fair comparison. I love some coquito and this was the first time I had a cupcake version. The extra rum was most definitely appreciated. The atmosphere was so nice that I spent the rest of the day working here. After reading reviews, I had to check this gem out. Maybe we caught it on an off day, I would absolutely love to give it the benefit of the doubt. We bought 4 empanadas (chix, beef, veggie) the shrimp empanada, rice and beans, plantains, and bread pudding were not captured. If I had to choose, the beef was the best. Wasn't expecting all to have cheese. A little disappointed by the veggie being it was large slices of peppers and very wet when cut in half, same with the shrimp. Bread pudding was doused in caramel and white chocolate sauces ultimately making it super sweet. We asked for one without but staff was unsure if this could be done so we took it but didn't eat it. My friend and I opted to sit at the bar, and the bartender didn't disappoint at all. He was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. The name of the drink I ordered escapes me, but the main ingredient was Guava. To be honest, I wasn't crazy about the drink however it was very potent. Now to the food, I ordered the meal which included three Nada's, two sides and a cupcake. I tried the Turkey, Chicken and Beef Nadas, Broccoli and a Bacon Caramel Cupcake (they were out of Oreo cupcakes) and when I tell you everything was so fresh and flavorful! Food absolutely delicious and felt like I was back home on the island. However, I noticed when I came to pick up my food there was a step to enter the building but no visible ramp. This is an ADA and excludes wheelchair users or those who use mobility aids from entering the restaurant. This was disappointing because my mother uses mobility aids and needs ramps for access. I would highly recommend the pork empanada over the chicken. The pork empanada was flavorful so moist. The chicken was OK. However, the chicken was a little dry could have use more time marinating or a little less cook time. Heard about this place on tic tock! I've been trying for weeks to come but never was able to make it. So finally was able to stop by on a Friday night around 630p. The place itself has the most vibrant decor I've ever seen. From the 90s music being played , the iconic black cinema being shown throughout on different televisions , and various board games being played ... the place is serving black excellence . Ran into a bit of a catering issue and needed to have food plated and served that night--vegetarian style. Luckily, I heard of a woman-owned business ran by an awesome single Mommy called "The Empanada Lady" via a Yelp event. I made a hopeful phone call with fingers crossed. Not only did Elisa make me a plate full of veggie empanadas, but she also included sides, condiments and some fruit to accompany the plated empanadas. Talk about aesthetically pleasing!
