We accidentally locked ourselves out of the house while walking the dog. It was 8:30am and almost every locksmith was closed. Emerson's was not only open, but friendly, concerned and had someone to our home in 30 minutes. The locksmith tried very hard to open the lock without having to drill. Unfortunately, he was forced to do so. But, he had a replacement cylinder and had everything installed and matched to our existing key within an hour. The filing cabinet in my office was missing a key and I called requesting an estimate on a site visit and updated lock and key. However, Debbie asked me if there was a number on the lock and, after checking to see that there was, said she could try cutting me a new key for a fraction of the price. Emerson, I owe you an apology. I snootily looked past your no-frills store-front because it didn't dazzle me like the rolling barbecues and rainbow umbrellas that constitute Koontz Hardware's frou-frou exterior. Don't get me wrong -- I love Koontz for paint and rock hard caulking, but next time I'll know to go to you first whenever I want keys for my front door made. You see, I have a really ancient, roaring 20s era deadbolt + handle combination, and whenever my loopy, spaced out self loses keys, I have an absolute flapper of a time finding a replacement. Of course, I could always just replace the lock with something more modern, but that would be too easy, and I thrive on drama. At least, the "you-get-a-freebie-if-you-can-get-past-the-porch-and-into-my-living-room" sort. Three Koontzies looked at the crusty, rusty original key that I wanted copied, and all three told me that they couldn't do it (which upset me), though they all suggested I go next door to ask you to copy my key, which pleased me. One also told me my breath smelled nice (thanks, Mentos), which has nothing to do with anything, but that pleased me too. Anyway, I don't know why I'm telling you this, Emerson, because you already know my story. You prefer cash, but can take my ATM bank card. And, if I were the sort who wants to charge $2 on a credit card, you can do that, too. You don't have a modern card reader, which is cute (in a good way, I swear). I love how you slide that old, metal facsimile thing over my card to get the numbers, and have me sign the carbon copy. It's like I turned into my parents, but am younger, perhaps a bit less level-headed, and speak better English. Thanks for selling me the pepper spray, too. Now I'm going to walk past my neighbor's dogs with more confidence. If I lose my front door key again, I'll know exACTly what to do -- first, I'll admire Koontz's grills -- maybe even be a duplicitous little sneak and park in their lot -- then I'll come to you with my sob story. You'll listen, and nod your head in wonder at why I won't just buy one of the new doorknobs you also sell. I'll smile back, and say I love my knob, but treat my keys like sh--. So you'll cut me a brass key on your old fashioned machine, humming while you work, and I'll admire the big combination jewelry safes you have on display. You'll finish, just in time to tell me not to climb into the safes because one time a kid got locked inside -- or so the legend goes. I can't tell you how many times I have had to make copies of keys last minute and/or buy new garage clickers. If you have an identical clicker, they will even program it for you so you don't have to go through the hassle. Emerson Locksmith is one of the best Locksmith's in the whole city. They have been in business over 50 years so they have literally seen it all! I am pretty handy when it comes to house stuff and I was fixing a broken deadbolt and they told me if I brought the deadbolt in they could rekey it and save me a little money. Of course I had to put the thing back on which took a little while but I really appreciated that they tell it to you straight, and also they are true experts in locks and home security. Another gentleman Ed (had no attitude and was very cool about it) did start helping me solve the issue of my pickup, and John who was doing something else just came over to rebuke me that I was the one who didn't submit the order correctly and angrily hauled himself over saying "did I not explain to you bla bla bla" I replied no sir, i came in here and you were not trying to understand me while taking my request and just proceeded to confuse me thinking you knew what I wanted, you said "are you confused?" Lesson 1 in business: Listen to the customer first and try to understand what it is they want before coming to conclusions. read more

Would have loved to have worked with these guys but they could not get their stuff together enough to make an appointment with me and strung me along for a week. I was referred to them by my friends contractor to fix some locks on my french doors. On July 9 I called and asked if they could fix the doors by the 30th. The man I spoke to said they were in the middle of moving offices and didn't know if they could take on the job or if it was a job better suited for a handy man he knows. He asked me to email him pictures and he would let me know. So I did and in the email again stated I needed the work done before July 30th. I didn't hear anything back so I called the next afternoon and spoke to a woman who said she printed up the email and posted it on their board but honestly had not read it yet. She was in super high spirits and was giggling the whole time. It was a pleasant conversation. I told her the situation again and went over the pictures. She said she would talk to her guys and get back to me the next day. She also reminded me they were moving and I said I totally understood. On Thursday July 12 at 11:24am Debbi sent me an email saying "Can you please send me the address? We want to get you scheduled" so I immediately responded at 11:59am. And then did not hear one thing back all weekend. On Sunday July 15 I sent the following email "Hey there. I know you guys are moving but I've been trying to schedule something with you since Monday. As I said in my first phone call and email I need to get this work done very soon so I'm going to have to go with another company if I don't hear back by tomorrow afternoon. " I did not hear anything back. I understand the craziness of moving and I think I was pretty patient but in the end felt like my time was not respected at all and it set me back a week. I guess I was too optimistic thinking I could just trust a business I was referred to by a friend and not be talking to and pricing multiple people at the same time. Still, it can't be a good business tactic on the side of Emerson to make people feel this way. Don't you want people to only come to you? If they had immediately referred me out, which they were saying they might do once they saw the pictures, I would have gone to them first the next time. Now I'm looking for handymen who can fit me in rather than being able to hire the best person for the job since most of the best guys are booked up 2 weeks in advance. This is the first review I've been really compelled to write. We just moved in to a new house and wanted to have all the locks rekeyed so I researched and found Emerson had a strong rating on Yelp and was also down the street from where we moved. I called them and they said it'd be about a week before they could come out and do the job. I thought that felt like a long time but figured it was worth the wait because of their rating. As promised they showed up on the date and time to rekey the locks. However, the issues started almost immediately after they left. Two days after they rekeyed our entire house, we started having issues with both the main gate to our house and the front door. I was concerned because we couldn't get the front gate to lock so I called Emerson back and asked that they send someone out to look at it. The woman who answered the phone became very defensive and said that while she believed it wasn't their fault, she'd try and schedule someone to come out within three days! Three days?!? Ok so in the meantime we'll just leave our front gate wide open since it wouldn't lock! We called twice asking if they could please send someone out ASAP since this was our front gate and opened our house up to anyone walking down our busy street. The woman was extremely rude to us and made us almost feel bad for even calling. When the locksmith did come back out two days later, he kept on telling us that this wasn't their fault but they would 'fix it and not charge us.' Two weeks later we had the same issue with our front door. The deadbolt became almost impossible to unlock or lock. Reluctantly, due to the rudeness of the woman who answers their phone, we called back and explained what was happening. They acted like they had no idea who we were and had no recollection of ever coming to our house in the first place! The woman listened to me tell her the entire issue and than just passed me to a guy who made me re-explain everything. The guy then gave me a story about how they're understaffed and that he'd call me back after he had a chance to find our invoice. He said that if someone would be at the house that they'd be able to come by and look at it. Not only did he never call me back but I also missed half a day of work waiting for them because he told me they'd come over that day to fix the lock and never did. I'm really upset because now I have to pay to have another locksmith fix their mistakes. I certainly won't be using these guys ever again. Like ever again. read more

I needed to have a replacement key cut for my motorcycle by the key code because I had lost the only key that I had. I called around town, and many locksmith services could not do this (even though it is fairly common). On top of that many of the places I called sounded very unprofessional. Not only did Emerson's only charge me $10.50 for the copy when I was being quoted $30 - $50 at other shops, but they even went so far as to fashion a custom key for me to try on my motorcycle (which took a lot of grinding and trimming to make it the special shape that it needed to be) before they cut the expensive key blank that I had to special order from my motorcycle dealership. All said and done I spent under $15 for two working keys for my motorcycle. These guys are awesome! You definitely get the feeling that they care about there customers at this place because they knew quite a few of them who walked in by name. read more
