Went to Emerson for the first time while vacationing in Seattle, I did a bit of research prior and was quiet confident with my pick, but still was pleasantly surprised by how great my hair looked after Joe did his magic. After highlighting my hair for ages, I wanted to try the "ombre" look. I came in with a picture and Joe knew exactly what to do! Needless to say, when I went back home and asked a recommended colorist to touch up on my ombre-do months later, she made such a disaster on my head that I wanted to fly across the world and have Joe fix it. I really don't trust a lot of people with my hair, but I've had people close to me recommend Lancer Forney at the Emerson Salon. I finally had a chance to get my hair done by him. Now my hair has been notorious for being rather wild. I get my thick long hair from my dad and it has stifled a lot of hairdressers for years. He wanted to try this new Perfection Smoothing System on me, and I was thinking that this would be like other relaxers or texturizers. I was wrong. That whole procedure was not invasive at all unlike traditional ones. In fact he was also able to do the coloring right after we shampooed the treatment out. He had a bunch of hair swatches to help compare the different shades and how they would compliment with my natural hair color. in the end I ended up with some of the best hair I've ever had in years...not since my old hairdresser back in Long Beach retired some 15 years ago. The vibe here is very easy going, unlike most salons where it could be a bit on the pretentious side. I was there for four hours, but I had so much fun chatting it up with everyone there while getting my hair done it didn't even feel like it at all. To call Lancer a stylist is an understatement. He's an artist. He knows what he's doing and can even turn my mangled mess into something I can actually be proud of. He also recommended this Morrocan Oil shampoo and conditioner that will preserve everything that was performed that day. Yeah this stuff and the salon ain't cheap but when it comes to your hair you get what you pay for, and compared to all the uber-pretentious salons I've been at it's actually a good value since you're getting so much more than just a haircut. I am usually very picky when it comes to my hair and hard to please. I moved to Seattle 6 months ago and was in need for a good hair salon. When I heard about a great experience my friend had with Emerson Salon I decided to give it a try. First of all, I love that they give you the option to book an appointment online. The process was very organized (the website is clear and user-friendly) and they gave me a reminder call one day before my haircut. The salon decor is nice and I felt good there waiting for my turn after a long day at work. My hair dresser Ellen was very nice and professional; she understood my hair type and used the right product accordingly. After the haircut, my hair looked great and healthy. Plus, I didn't have to struggle with explaining what I wanted exactly because she knew what she was doing. Another thing I loved about Emerson Salon - and the reason I will visit them again - was their hair products. They have the Moroccan Oil line, which is awesome and not available everywhere. I asked for a buzz haircut but somehow the barber (Joe) was able to mess it up. I had different hair lengths in different areas of my head. I suspect this happened because the barber was not using a machine, he was cutting my hair with scissors, which took him about 30 minutes to get the work done! I usually get a buzz in 10 minutes (or less) and pay $10, but he asked me for $30! When I asked why was the price so expensive and that I usually paid $10, he replied: "OK, I can do $10 for you". I was shocked! What if I never asked about the price? I would have paid 3 times the price of a buzz haircut. I sent them an email 2 weeks ago and they completely ignored it. My first mistake was getting a Groupon for Emerson, thinking their website looked okay and it's the only chance for me to get my hair done at a real salon because I am super broke. I paid $85 for $200 worth of services... I was ultimately mis-quoted at my initial consult and ended up paying $400 for a shitty experience and shitty hair. I wanted to go from brown to blond but I had some red left in my hair from a box dye. I would have preferred for the stylist (Joe?) to tell me he couldn't bring my hair to blond instead of trying for 4 hours and making my hair bright orange. Maybe he was having an off day because he was coming down with the flu. I don't know. He coughed all over me and when I asked, "Are you ok?" he said it was because of the yogurt he ate earlier... Well, I ended up catching the flu from him and missing a week of unpaid work and school. When I got over the flu, I called the salon to take me in and correct the color. They set me up with their "color specialist" Rusty who in a word DESTROYED my hair. He gave me a "french shampoo" which made my hair feel like straw every time it gets wet. He tried to run a comb through it and got frustrated that it was so tangled.. I told him it has never been like that before. I could hear him tearing my hair and he even turned me around in the chair by the comb that was stuck in my hair. Against my better judgment, I let him keep working. He made the color better but it is still really uneven. I just wanted to cut my losses and never mess with my hair again. I figure I'll use a box dye once it gets a little healthier. Do NOT let that man touch your head. He's so nuts. He even took out his paycheck and waved it in front of my face talking about all the money he makes from teaching color lessons... yikes. read more

Just moved into the area, and used to get my hair cut at the Aveda school back where I lived. It was fun, but I wanted something more consistent. I prefer the feel of barber shops, but like the quality of hair cuts at salons better. Well, here you can get the best of both! The inside of the shop has the classic barber vibe, and the quality of the cut was very good. In fact, I could not have asked for better, but will reserve the 5th star for consistency after I go back a few times more :) Optional straight razor shave on face would put this place over the edge too Of note, they say about half of the clients are women, so applicable girls, don't be shy! read more

Visited Danielle here last week for a quick haircut and left feeling pretty happy. The setup of the salon is unique, with each station using an antique dresser for their supplies. The lighting is also very warm- not the usual fluorescent crap used at most salons. Their products smell great and seem to be of good quality, and they played great music. $40 for a really good haircut plus a good conversation seemed reasonable. Their online booking system is also awesome for those of us who hate talking on the phone. read more

John recently contacted me to see if I would give him a second chance with my hair (individual stylists/part-owners are now charge of their own client relationships). Unfortunately, I no longer live in Seattle and as such can't take him up on his offer -- but I have a ton of respect for someone who wants to improve his relationships with clients, especially those who were originally unsatisfied. I don't want to toot my own horn or anything but I get a lot of compliments on my hair. The thing about this is that I'm really not tooting my own horn because if it were left up to me it'd me a big fro mess. Really, I often compare my hair to that of a "MoFro". That being said, the horn I AM tooting is for Danielle Severson. My hair has been in the care of Danielle for a couple years now. Never once has she led me astray. I have been trying for what seems like forever and am very paranoid about it being cut to short. Danielle always gets the job done exquisitely without compromising the length or style I want which is exactly what I look for in a hair cut. Aside from my favorite stylist, Emerson Salon is a joy to visit in and of itself with lots on natural light and a welcoming open feel. As much as you'd expect this kind of salon experience to be a tad bit bourgeois the staff is refreshingly friendly and the products and cuts quite reasonably priced. Choosing a new stylist after moving away from your old, trusted one is hard. Hard and stressful. I spent as much time searching online reviews for a salon as I did searching for a new gynecologist. After going the El Cheapo route and using the Aveda school in Cap. Hill and having a fairly traumatic experience (5 hrs?), I went to Peter at Emerson to help fix my woeful locks. I took in a few pictures of what I liked and what I absolutely didn't like. As others have said, I felt like we had an honest to goodness consultation, not just about my hair, but about me as a person, what I do for work, for fun, what makes me tick, etc. He gleans insights from who you are and then somehow manages to impart that onto your hair. Crazy? Yeah, I know! I have fine, straight hair and a face that seems to be getting a bit too round (ph, Seattle, why are doughnuts so damn pervasive here?). I worry that the wrong layer around my face will make my face look like a little piggy, but he managed to alleviate my fears and create a chic not chunky me. In all honesty, I will say that the guy threw me for a loop when he took my bangs and lopped them off. During our consult, I'd mentioned that I always dug the blunt bang look, but I thought my hair and it's incessant part wouldn't allow that look...and I thought we'd discuss the bang matter further when we got to that part of the cut. But, I'm happy and I get compliments on a regular basis. He's the Hair Whisperer. FYI, don't innocently refer to your stylist as the Bang Master on Facebook, unless you want some ridiculous feedback you're uncomfortable having your aunt read.... Emerson Salon has a great vibe, but what made my experience 5 stars was my stylist. Tara Bowden is the best! Every time I've seen her I've been super pleased with the results. She has an eye for detail, is super precise, and very thorough. I know that she cares about my hair just as much as I do. Lastly: If you've got straight Asian hair, trust Tara with it. I have been going to see Danielle for over a year now for both cuts and color. She is amazing. When I was keeping my hair long, she knew how to cut it so it looked fresh and healthy without removing the length. When I went to her for a long-bob ("lob") she knew exactly how to cut it so it was chic and angled, but not TOO short. Her main talent, however is ballayage. It is my favorite hair service in the world. I used to do highlights to lighten up my reddish-brownish hair, but those were often a hassle because you get roots almost immediately and then have to repeat the service perpetually. While Danielle did foil highlights for me once (because I asked for them), she suggested ballayage for my next appointment. Instead of foil, she teases sections of your hair and then paints on a bleach-mixture to specific strands, and then tones the whole thing. The end product looks amazing and natural, and the best part, it grows out so well! You only have to get it done every 3-4 months, but could even wait longer than that because the color blends so beautifully. In fact, it grows out to look like an ombre style, which many people want as their endgame anyway. I work in a fairly professional business, and her cuts and colors always make me look put together and professional. I can't say enough nice things about Danielle, how friendly and talented she is, how amazing she is at hair cuts and ballayage. I am definitely a loyal customer!!!! read more

Cute and clean salon; Tara rocks hard! I've been coming here to see Tara for several months now. She has solid training experience and a natural eye for beauty, color, texture, and shape. P.S. she is cute as a button. Over the past year she's taken my hair from natural jet black to caramel highlights to an all-over toffee...long layers, curls, and more recently a modern A-line. She's even done a fantastic beehive updo for my aerial performance, and it stayed put!! She is a perfectionist with my hair and always makes it unique to my personality and lifestyle. The salon is in a convenient location if you are on foot around capitol hill. The interior is clean and open - high ceilings, plenty of space between chairs, and good natural lighting. Her prices are always very reasonable, especially for Capitol Hill (easy for me to get to, but in general in Cap Hill, higher prices for women's haircuts), and I never feel unwelcome or uncool. I went from long locks to a pixie and I LOVE IT. I can't be happier with what D'Arcy did! Let me just start by saying Rusty Jones is a hair genius. I have a bad habit of letting my hair go way too long between cuts and colors. Rusty NEVER makes me feel bad about it. When I finally get back in to see him, he knows just what to do. I've been "seeing" Rusty for about 4 years. The transformation in this salon is incredible. I was blown away when I walked in after a long, long hair neglection period and I immediately fell in love with the new look. I love sitting in the chair watching Seattle hustle and bustle by. I love the rich Big City feel of the place. Now, lets talk performance - Rusty has done me red, blondish, highlights, low lights, and now my favorite rich brown. He always puts a little "Rusty" in it and the color lasts and lasts. My hair feels so good. The style lasts, the color doesn't wash out, my grey stays hidden, I fall in love with my hair all over again after my "Rusty Fix". Just so you readers out there know... I strayed once in the last 4 years and paid a heavy price - Thank God Rusty was able to put my hair back together again. I have always had a problem getting the right haircut. In the past, I would walk in with a specific style that was a bit out of the norm and try my best to describe it. I always left with something that turned out to be the hairstylist's inspired "creation" but which was nothing like the look I wanted. I only started paying for haircuts relatively recently, after an impulsive short-short cut a couple of years ago. I made the leap while visiting Seattle from Oakland, so I was conditioned early to travel for a good stylist. When that stylist packed her shears to Las Vegas (o Desiree!), I had to find a new salon in Seattle. No matter that I moved to Philadelphia in the meantime; style is style, and it's a good excuse to see family and friends and rain. My sister referred me to Ellen at Emerson, and tomorrow I'm taking my mother there. Ellen gave me a great cut in August that lasted till this Christmas visit. Even though I showed up a little late, she spent over an hour on the cut, cheerfully made adjustments that I wanted, and suggested some that turned out beautifully. I got a good, low-maintenance cut that has helped me transition from having thick short hair to thick, only rather short hair. A-plus for Ellen! The salon is relatively cheap for the quality of the cut. Which makes up - in part - for the cost of the plane ticket. read more

First, let me confess what a serial hair stylist jumper I am. If I don't like a cut, I don't go back. I have had bad cut after bad in the past and it never failed for me to come home upset after a cut. Horror stories people! I have thick, full hair and I always feared going to get my hair cut because nobody ever got it right. But, along came Ellen. She knows exactly how to manage my full head of hair. My textured layers blend w/ coherent order and she actually knows how to bring out on the beauty of thick full hair instead of it working against me. No poofiness, just exactly how I hoped it would turn out. Her ability to gauge what needs to be done for your hair type is obviously on par, because I'm also not the best at articulating what I want. While I have been traumatized as a child by bad haircuts and 80's style perms, I am still willing to venture out to different salons once in a while based on word of mouth. Per the recommendation of a couple friends, I went to see Franz @ Emerson Salon for my first real cut/color in this city. After having a stylist back east (and arranging haircuts when I flew home), I finally decided to find a local stylist & couldn't be more satisfied. I had suggested a bit of color, so he did just that. He actually suggested I go a bit lighter than I had originally said I'd like - a great recommendation. He continued to work until he achieved the color we were both looking for. Also, the use of the straight-edge razor on the neck was A+. I, like others, waited to write my review. I wanted to make sure my opinion was the same a couple weeks later as it was when i first walked out the door. The salon is clean and has great music. The receptionist is friendly and inviting. I had a cut and color by Franz. I have difficult hair to cut and coloring can sometimes be challenging. I went in with a basic idea of what I wanted. Franz listened. I asked if he had any ideas. WoW! He carefully gave great detail on enhancements to my original idea. I went with it. He double checked with me and showed me the colors that I had requested. He was able to adjust the colors so there were exactly what I wanted. The cut was perfect. The colors were amazing. I've never had so many compliments on my hair. Franz is an artist with hair. On top of that he's very friendly, gives great hair care tips and recommends the product that would work for me. The hair product I bought is incredible. He wasn't just selling stuff. By recommending Franz I have kept my integrity in tact. No warm fuzzies just because it would make him feel good. "I help people love their hair again" -- a side explanation from the fantastic Peter, who accomplished that very task for my latest haircut. I came in with only a vague idea of what I wanted, but with very firm stances on what I DIDN'T want. Peter was able to explain to me why my previous cut wasn't for me, and what he'd do differently to give me bangs that didn't make me cry every time I looked into the mirror. Historically when I got optimistic and hopeful and requested straight bangs from my stylist, I ended up walking away disappointed. Given that track record, I now say this without any sort of exaggeration: within the last decade, Peter has been the only one to give me straight bangs that actually look GOOD on me. Sainthood nomination right there, imo. ALSO, if that wasn't already enough, he mentioned that he also gives free bang maintenance trims between cuts! I've never had another stylist/salon offer me that before, so that level of dedication means a lot to me. I also ended up with very lovely face-framing layers, and he didn't cut off more than we agreed upon. Sidenote on my mother's behalf, who had her hair cut by D'Arcy: she was extremely happy with the layers D'Arcy gave her. Usually I hear my mother say, "They didn't give me enough layers, sigh..." after past haircuts, but this time she was without complaint! I've never heard her chat so much with a hairstylist as she did with D'Arcy that day; Emerson definitely gets a +1 for the sheer friendliness of their stylists. Other things I loved about the whole experience at Emerson... 1) They were very understanding when I called to let them know I was running late, and rescheduled me without hassle. 2) They weren't pushy with product sales, which is good, because I probably would've just ended up dumping the moroccan oil on the ground and rolling around in it. Deliiicious stuff. 3) They made us feel welcomed, starting with warm greetings and ending with personal farewells. I have been searching for a place to get a decent haircut for the past couple of months. I had walked by Emerson Salon numerous times on the hill, but had never stopped in until yesterday afternoon. However, it wasn't just a decent haircut, it was GREAT. I didn't have an appointment, but I walked in and was happily greeted by D'Arcy, stylist extraordinare. BAM! 5 mintues later I was upstairs getting my hair rinsed in the sink. D'Arcy was super helpful (and really nice) and she took the time to discuss what I was looking for and what I liked. Needless to say, my hair looked great and I felt so much better. And my wallet wasn't severely emptied out. The salon is very chill, not pretentious in any way. Unlike the last salon I visited where I felt so out of place and I didn't know whether or not I should get up and dance with a pair of glow-sticks during my appointment. I am really picky when it comes to salons and customer service. I have long red wavy hair and somehow, most stylists I encounter mess it up with an ugly cut or too many highlights. I went in for my first time last Saturday (12/19) for an appt with Peter. He asked what my natural hair color is and I pointed out the non-highlighted/disastrous portion of my hair. I asked if he could make the year-old over highlighted nastiness disappear and that's exactly what he did! I feel really grateful he accommodated my last minute request. He matched my natural color perfectly and cut my hair exactly how I wanted it. I'm very very pleased with his work and I am recommending him to everyone. I will return to him for sure. I think my stylist's name was Paul Allen...but I could be insane, or misheard... Anyhow, I came one Monday night and I was the only person in the salon, it was a bit awkward, until this gal came out from some closet or something? And said, "oh you must be Celeste! (Your stylist) will be here shortly." Then she offered me tea. Paul (?) was a nice guy, we had great conversation, but everything was slightly awkward, in a hard to define way. I have had salon haircuts many times, and am well behaved and speak up to say what I want out of my haircut. So I think I'm pretty ok as a customer. Soooo happy. Okay, here's the thing. I've got pretty great hair, and I know what to do with it. Yeah, there're those days when I can't be bothered to care that if I've let it be curly it shouldn't be in a ponytail, but for the most part, I've got good hair. My visit to Emerson Salon (with the fantastic to spend 45 minutes with Peter!) was the first time I've seen someone new for my hair in at least four years. Possibly six, I can't quite remember. It's not like I was dissatisfied with my old girl, but my mind has decided that while driving to Bellevue is fine for the mall, the same does not go for my hair. (Plus she's not there on Wednesday or Thursday, the two most convenient days of the week for me...) Coming here and seeing Peter was a great experience. It felt like he got everything I was saying even when I wasn't sure what I was saying, and he didn't try and give me any of the BS "you MUST come in 6 weeks if you're growing it out" or "your hair will fall right out, all over the floor, if you don't buy this product. and this one. oh, and the one here." That's so refreshing! I don't need the hard sell on products that probably won't make much difference (or that I just plain wouldn't use anyway) and I'll come in when my hair feels yucky, thank you very much! But yeah, I didn't get anything fancy done, just a desperately needed trim and lightening up of the layers, but it feels great. Everything about the place was great from the three friendly women there when I walked in (ladies, you know sometimes that can be very different in places like this!), to the $40 (plus tip) that I happily paid as I left. First I must say that this review is from a couple years ago and just specific to the one stylist that I saw. I saw Emily for a cut and color. The color turned out alright (at the time I had a very easy/simplistic color needs) and the haircut was worse than average. Not terrible but I wish I had called and ask for a refund for that portion or had someone fix it. During the services, however, she made completely inappropriate conversation with me and I was very very uncomfortable. She wouldn't stop talking and about herself and personal information that I did not want or need to know. After all of that she had the audacity to ask for my contact info because she would resigning there soon and would like to keep me as a client. No shot in hell, how tacky! I'm only not giving them 1 star because the customer services was good. read more
