Last friday I went in to get a fresh shag from Dinnie and now I can't stop checking myself out in the mirror. They killed it!! 14th ave hair is very COVID-safe. They are definitely taking the necessary precautions. Dinnie is very skilled with razor cutting and has a wonderful eye. Since the cut I have been showered with compliments from friends, coworkers, and strangers. One person even called my hair a work of art! Suffice it to say, I am incredibly pleased. I just moved to Seattle a month ago and was in dire need of a haircut. So I figured why not shop around on Groupon and LivingSocial for a new hair place? After looking at the deals, and reading up on reviews of the salons, I settled on 14th Ave Hair for just a cut (livingsocial deal $30). I gave the store a rang, went to an answering machine, and Dave gave me a call back shortly. He told me a stylist by the name of Heidi might have openings for the weekend. Sweet! I didn't think I was gonna get a cut till mid following week. I texted Heidi, and she was able to squeeze me in Sunday afternoon (I called Friday). Sunday afternoon sitting in Heidi's chair, I told her a little about how I maintain my hair (embarrassing to admit, but I tend to get it cut once a year, and maybe some color added depending how I am feeling that visit). Anyways, she listened to what I was looking for, chopped about 4 inches off my hair, gave me layers, and I am totally happy with my cut! I got a perm and cut from Dinnie and am so so happy! Before the appointment I messaged Dinnie on Instagram and they were super helpful answering my questions and making a plan based on my hair type and reference images I had. I have thick, heavy, and straight hair so I was a bit worried but Dinnie was so great accommodating for that. The perm turned out perfect and they used a razor cutting technique to get a ton of layers in my hair without looking choppy at all. It also compliments my facial structure well. My hair totally exceeds my expectations of how good it could be. 14th Ave Hair is Covid safe. Everyone was masked and the equipment was sanitized between uses. I made an appointment with Dinnie after finding them thru Yelp and I couldn't be more pleased with how my hair turned out. I got longer layers done with long curtain bangs and I literally can't stop looking at myself in the mirror! Dinnie is such a sweetheart and made me feel super comfortable since I'm not one to ever do anything special with my hair; they walked me thru the entire process and explained every technique which I found super fascinating. 14th Ave hair is a great little spot and they were incredibly covid cautious which made me feel even more comfortable. I am thoroughly impressed with 14th Ave Hair. I came across the business at a street fair a few weeks back, where Heather, Lori, and a few others were handing out free samples w/ a coupon and doing free bang trims. Heather cleaned up my bangs for me, and I decided to go back for the full deal. Wow am I glad I did because she did such a great job!! I had a style in mind and she listened to exactly what I wanted and talked everything through with me beforehand. I wanted to keep my length, but I have curly/wavy hair and my layers were overgrown, and she just did a stellar job finding the right balance between the two. She is awesome and has a great personality and I will definitely go back to see her. This was also one of the most affordable cuts I've received in Seattle. Also worth mentioning -- the salon accepts walk-ins (I called to make an appointment that day with no trouble at all), I didn't have any problems finding parking around the corner, and it is very clean and pretty on the inside. read more

I got a bad haircut here once. +1 for taking both walk-ins and pressure off of other, perhaps more facile stylists elsewhere. Note: there is nothing 'suspicious' about not liking the haircut I received or posting about it on a reviews website. The owner took great pains to follow up with me which I appreciate, even offering a free do-over, but make-good doesn't un-make bad. Caveat emptor. read more

Not only did she really take the time to understand what I was going for, but she was extremely communicative about the progress. I'm a superfan. This is one of the best cut & colors I've ever had, and it most definitely didn't break the bank! Called after a friend recommended them to me, and was able to get an appt just a few days later with Heather. She called me to talk a bit about what I was interested in, and asked if I could send her a photo of my current hair situation. Once I got there, it was smooth sailing! She had some great feedback about what would work best given what I wanted, and then we got down to business. Heather is a talented and affordable stylist, and very personable and easy to talk to. A friend recommended Heather to me in Fall 2011 when I put a call out on Facebook that I was looking for an affordable hairstylist who is great with curly hair. I'd tried a couple of expensive "designer" salons and was unhappy because the hair stylists never wanted to give me a funky doo. Fortunately I've finally found my ideal stylist; Heather is exactly who I was looking for! I've been seeing her regularly now for my short curly hair, and I will keep seeing her for years to come. Heather does long and straight hair great too; I recommended her to coworker with straight hair and she's happy with Heather, too. I also can't complain about $35 for a women's cut. Heather is the best!! I had a head full of really ratty, damaged hair and brought in a picture of what I wanted as a haircut (much shorter, my hair was past shoulder-length and had been bleached and dyed multiple times) and she did the exact thing I asked for. She and David, who is always in the shop whenever I've been there, are both friendly and easy to work with. She's also an artist so check out some of her henna paintings on the walls. The rates are super-reasonable and I've never had an issue getting an appointment, even scheduling one or two days beforehand. After going once, I haven't changed shops since and it's a relief to have someone who can give you a great haircut every time. There are a ton of salons on Capitol Hill, but these people really deserve your business and will give you the look you ask for at a great price. read more

Over the years, I've gotten really weird about my hair. I guess. I used to dye it and cut it super short, but eventually I decided to go natural and long. Once my hair was about shoulder length, I went shamphree - also called no poo. Well what happens before every haircut? A shampoo! Heavens, no! Heather listened to me, trusted that I could take care of my scalp myself, and worked with what can only be called my hair insanity. She just wetted my hair - no shampoo or conditioner. Then she gave me an awesome haircut that took out some of the excess bulk, shaped everything real nice, and even cut it so it's more likely to accent my natural curl. (I didn't ask for that last one but I should have if I had known!) I'm a fan! read more

Lori cut my hair for years, then stopped doing hair for a while. In the time she took off, I left Seattle. Are these two things related? no, but that would make a good story. However! I recently purchased an Amazon deal for cut and all-over color. Lori was my stylist. She did a wonderful job. I am very happy with my cut, and she did a great job with the color. It turned out more subtle than I had in mind, but I also told her I trusted her judgment, and my husband said that my hair looks "10 years younger." If you have dry, thick, frizzy, curly hair like me, make an appt with Heidi! She really takes her time and cuts your hair in a way that follows the curl and makes it fall right. She will also take the time to explain to you what she's doing. Plus, if you have super thick hair she can thin it by hand with normal shears (instead of using those horrible thinning scissors that end up causing more frizz in the end). After cutting my hair, she even showed me how to style it using the right combination of products and letting it air dry. This was a total game changer for me - I no longer have to spend 1-2 hours using heat tools every time I wash it- I just put in a few products and go. Seriously, just do yourself a favor and go see Heidi. read more

My boyfriend has been seeing Lori for quite a while now and he has always talked very highly of her and the work she does. I decided to give her a visit because my hair needed a serious re-vamp! I called her, and miraculously, she was able to get me in the next day! I'm sure that doesn't normally happen, considering how far ahead the next opening was, but I jumped on it and I'm SO GLAD I DID! My hair has always been extremely hard to handle. It just lays weird after most cuts and never wants to cooperate for most stylists. I informed her of this and she was very confident that she would be able to give me the results I wanted. She went in and gave a very detailed cut then did a dry cut with her texturizing scissors and my layers are PERFECT! I am seriously so happy, it's incredibly hard to find a good stylist that you can trust but I just found one that I will be returning to time and time again. I joined Yelp just now specifically to inform the world about my wonderful stylist, David. He has been cutting my hair for /cough/teen years now and I will not go to anyone else. My hair has been various lengths and shapes and styles and for a little while when I had filthy dot-com lucre it was even highlighted, but the one constant has been this: abundant compliments from strangers. People regularly stop me on the street to tell me what a great haircut I have and to ask who did it. On buses, in meetings at work, in airports -- last Sunday I was at breakfast out of town and, *after* we'd left a tip, the waitress came by to say that she really liked my haircut, that it suited me. I like having good, low-maintenance haircuts, but I can't lie, I am also a fan of guaranteed random ego boosts. I have followed David from salon to salon, but 14th Avenue Hair is charming and convenient, and I hope he stays put there. It is also a pleasure to support small local businesses and women entrepreneurs. Judging from the reactions I get when people ask me how much I paid for such a terrific haircut and I tell them, David's rates seem extremely reasonable. (I don't know only because I have no basis for comparison.) If you have the very slightest case of stylist malaise, David is my strong recommendation for a lifetime cure. read more

I came in on a Monday night so it was very quiet and relaxing and my stylist, Lori was super friendly and easy to talk to. I usually go to a barber shop because I just get a simple buzz cut. It was a Saturday and all barber shops were booked. I then stumbled upon 14th avenue hair. Unique looking little house shop. The owner greeted me with a smile and kindness. She did not have any free stylist, so she took me to the back and did my hair. She was thoroughly good with executing the styled buzz but that I wanted. She did not finish Until I was satisfied with the cut she gave me. It was great. She was also very outgoing and you can see that the staff really enjoys their jobs. I recommend this place to anyone who like to support local small businesses.
