First time visit to EM J's and it was Very Good! Had the classic Eggs Benedict and the poached eggs where cooked Perfect! Sausage was good, Ham was nice size and the hollandaise was very tasty, not like some others that use premixed or sauce packets. Tried out this breakfast joint. There's a lot of very sweet stuff on the menu, such as cinnamon roll pancakes and lots of French toast and pancakes with whipped cream and honey or syrup on them. Those do not appeal at all to me. But there were also lots of interesting savory choices. My friend went very basic, just sunny side up eggs and potatoes, while I did a spinach & mushroom omelette with English muffin. They were both good, and the coffee was hot and refilled often. This is out of our normal area, about 20 minutes away. Not sure we'd make the drive over again as while it was good, not necessarily better than other closer places. But if you're in the area, I would recommend this place as the service was also very good. read more

Em J's is our go to for breakfast and lunch. Everything is DELICIOUS and I believe we have had just about everything on the menu! They are very close to my job and home, so my family and colleagues are very happy campers. I have been going here for years and I am very bad about leaving reviews, but now more than ever small businesses, mom and pop businesses, need our support. On seeing the review before mine, I just had to make a comment. I was disappointed to see the one star from an almost first time customer who came to the cafe during what I would assume was a much needed vacation by the owners and staff. I too own my own a small business so I know the hours. It is always best to go to the business website or call to check hours. Most of us don't have the time to change hours on every single platform where the business hours may be listed. Great food, great people and great surroundings make for a wonderful meal. Well I have been here before and found the place to be pleasant with down home food. I was in a rush one day and starving as usual. So I called in an order and by the time I arrived it was ready for pickup. Got the panini, which was nice and crisp and a reuben sandwich which was very good. Em J is located in an unassuming strip mall in Berwyn, The restaurant is casual, clean, and friendly, with a breakfast bar and chalkboard specials. We ate here several months back, and the second time was just as outstanding. Their breakfast menu has something for everyone, and they even include a separate menu page for daily/weekly specials. We ordered two coffees, an orange juice and an apple juice to start. We decided to split the Gruyere omelette - an omelette with gruyere cheese, sausage, and caramelized onions, and the "Chunky Monkey," a Belgian waffle with chocolate chips, bananas, walnuts and vanilla cream, along with a side of bacon. The food came out pretty quickly - and I must say, the food is high quality. The omelette was generously filled with stringy and gooey Gruyere and packed with flavor. The red bliss potatoes that came with the omelette were a nice touch. The waffle was hot and crisp on the outside, and soft on the inside, just the way I love my waffles. I appreciated that the toppings weren't overbearing and they weren't too sweet. This may be our "go to" breakfast place from now on. read more

I give it 5 stars in its category think Mom and Pop dinner with some extra touches like real maple Syrup. Their specials menu changes often and I'm always delighted to see their theme menus. We have eaten at this restaurant four times in the past several months and have enjoyed ourselves. Our server was friendly but because the restaurant was very busy ditched us for a portion of the meal when we wanted refills on milk and drinks, I tried to wave for down but noticed that she was busy dealing with other checks calculating cost etc. On busy days they could use a beverage runner (going to refill coffees and drinks etc.) I recommend their sausage. They cut it in half and grill it so it has extra flavor. In the past I've had grilled corn muffins that have been delicious. My son likes the sunrise which is little bit of everything, eggs, meat, pancake. Our extremely picky eater devoured A stack of chocolate chip pancakes. One serious plus for me is that they have real maple syrup upon request, many people like the fake stuff but I am a purist and off and bring my own for even one bite of someone's pancake. I believe it's the owner who welcomes his guests as they arrive from behind the counter. He made a point of stopping by our table to make sure we were all satisfied with our meal. The owners are always on the property and often greet and seat guests. EmJ's is a family owned business and a neighborhood treasure. They have a lovely outside covered deck. The food is always fresh and delicious. They are especially known for their pancakes and French toast that are served in creative combinations with daily specials. Many dishes are served gluten free which is another reason why we love it. The quality, quantity, and exceptional service is always a reason to go back. We went there for Mother's Day breakfast (2023) and enjoyed the weather and deck seating. It was a delightful experience- AGAIN!! read more

My husband and I shared a short stack of pancakes and the red bliss garden medley. The pancakes were SO dense and chewy - they were actually pretty difficult to cut with the side of my fork. I am not a fan of that type of pancakes at all. I didn't like the syrup at the table either - it was very thick. The red bliss garden medley was really good. I exited my car to a surprise this morning. I expected to walk into Patty Mac's Cafe, and instead was confronted by Em J's Cafe. I don't live in the area anymore, and only get here a few times per year. Apparently, right around the time of my last breakfast here in March 2011, Patty sold the cafe to the current owners. I let my moment of sadness pass, then went inside for breakfast. The basic layout is unchanged from Patty's, and it is remodeled with earth tone colors, has a nice chalk board for specials, and overall the same homey atmosphere. I had my usual breakfast (see photo) of Belgian waffle, home fries, and bacon. I asked for the home fries well done, and didn't bother to ask for the special whipped cream Patty used to make, though I think I should've tried. The food was excellent, and it came out just a few minutes after I placed my order - FAST. The home fries were well done and not overly salty. The waffle was soft and fluffy, and the bacon - well, it's bacon. Perfect by nature :) Come here for breakfast. It's excellent. read more

This is a great little place. Cozy but well lit. Great menu. The food was fast out to the table and delicious. The chipped beef on toast was really good and the pancakes were almost perfect. The coffee was decent, and exactly as it should be for this kind of place. The staff was friendly and accommodating. We visited on Super Bowl Sunday and they broke out into the Eagles fight song, so that was fun. We are definitely going back and I will definitely recommend it to my friends. Two little details that I really liked: they had Cholula as well as tobasco on the table and offered sugar in the raw. We found this place randomly after being at the thrift store right next to it! It's awesome!! They had so many great brunch foods!! I got cinnamon roll pancakes that were so delicious. I don't know where everyone else was eating or who waited on them but my experience here wasn't good. I came in early with my boyfriend right after they opened for the day. Even though there were only two other people inside it took far longer than normal for someone to approach us. I didn't mind that. It's early and I used to work in a restaurant so I understand the slow start. Our waitress must have been there the longest, because she was training another waitress and busy giving directives to another. I ordered the french toast and it was undercooked. The syrup, which they claim is natural maple syrup, wasn't good at all. I told the waitress it wasn't good and she offered to have them make some more. I declined because undercooked food does wonders on the appetite. I was still polite and told her it wasn't her fault (servers don't cook your food so don't take it out on them). However, she quickly copped an attitude and decided to be rude for the rest of time we were there. She still charged me for the one piece of undercooked french toast I ate and threw the check on the table. We still tipped 20% and won't be back. Maybe she had a bad morning? Maybe she hadn't made her usual cup of coffee yet? Either way, the service ended up being dreadful and with so many other brunch places in the area there's no point in trying this place again. I went with the Red Bliss Garden Medley which was made up of grilled veggies, breakfast potatoes, and cheddar cheese. Savory, delicous and felt semi healthy eating veggies for breakfast. I typically do not like pancakes but had a bite of my husband's which came with the All That. I may need to come back and order pancakes they were great, not too dense! It appears they forgot the orange garnish on his plate which made the plate look a little sad. But other than that the service was great. Waitress was attentive, the power actually went out during our meal But the manager came out to make sure we were ok. Stopped here for breakfast and picked this place based on the Yelp reviews that featured lots of fresh, homemade food. I ordered the Waffler - two eggs, one sausage, and a 1/2 waffle and my counterpart ordered the eggs "Benedict" with the creamed chipped beef instead of the hollandaise. Both were quite good and you can see why this place is popular with the local folks. You also get real maple syrup here.
