We had come here a few times, all with ok results. But the last time was nauseating. The food on my plate tasted and looked like it was very old, from the back of their moldy fridge. I sent it back. My husband had a 'taco salad' that was absolutely NOTHING but shredded iceberg lettuce. We will NEVER go back. To be fair the place is a dive. They recently added some lovely patio seating and repainted the outside but the inside is definitely rough. Chipped dishes, bent forks, booths beat to hell but the best vegetable quesadilla ever, so you just have to accept it. Their chips are first rate too, not greasy or salty and I love the salsa because it's less chunky (and therefore more authentic) than most salsas. It has a nice kick. The rice is usually dried out but the re-fried beans are tasty. There are definitely more than a few items which are probably frozen and you should avoid ordering things that would not be freshly made (like jalapeno poppers). I usually get the tamales, a taco or enchiladas and the chile rellenos is yummy too. I really think the people are nice and they are probably all Mexican since I'm pretty sure they all speak Spanish.Also I've seen a lot of Mexicans eating here which is a good sign for a Mexican restaurant. I've been going to this El Toreo location for eight years btw and it has been consistently good all these years. read more

El toreo is the original Mexican restaurant in Ocala and this is the first location. The staff are friendly and attentive. Service is top notch; better than restaurants costing 3x as much. Your drink won't go dry even during a busy lunch hour. Food is so-so. I really love chili rellenos and the ones here aren't that good. I give the food a 6/10, but it's very close to my office so I eat here frequently. read more

My experience at El Toreo was phenomenal. The family friendly environment was very clean and the service was excellent. The staff were all wearing face coverings, and were constantly seen cleaning and disinfecting surfaces. The entire time I was there, I never ran out of chips and salsa and my drink was never empty. The server did an excellent job, he was helpful with menu options, and extremely friendly! When the food came out, it was hot and probably the best Mexican cuisine I have ever had. To top it off, their birthday experience is unmatched! The entire serving staff came out signing and brought me the most delicious churros and ice cream. They put a sombrero on my head and smeared whip cream on my face! They even took a picture and printed it out for me to take home. Best dining experience yet! read more

Listen, I've been to waaaay better Mexican places than this place. First of all, they're so incredibly rude. The margaritas are not even that good, I ordered chicken tacos and it was like cut up chicken tenders on a tortilla with no lettuce, tomato or cheese. The chips and salsa I will say are good. We are visiting the area and stopped in here for dinner tonight. Looked like your typical Mexican place when we arrived. But they blew us away. My husband had the shredded beef quesadilla; my daughters had the steak fajitas; and I had the carne asada tacos. Everything tasted very good. Our waiter was great and made our experience wonderful. He gladly made me a horchata with rum which tasted so good. We ended with the fried cheesecake burrito and fried ice cream. The cheesecake was amazing. I went to El Toreo for the Ocala.ME Meet and Greet with a group and everyone enjoyed themselves. We all had good food and even a few drinks. Since there were a couple of people we got a free drink from the manager. the food was fresh and tasted fine although probably not the best Mexican food I have eaten. Being from Texas, perhaps my expectations of Mexican food are a little high. But El Toreo is just so disappointing, every time. However, my hubby likes to go there and have a burrito. Definitely stick with the basics at this restaurant, burritos, enchiladas, tacos. I wanted something light tonight so I ordered the grilled shrimp salad. You would think that they would take a little care with an entree salad, I mean, this is my dinner! All of the lettuce was the white core of iceberg lettuce. I like a green salad, not a white salad. The shrimp was just barely acceptable, tiny shrimp, overly salty. Worst of all was the so-called Sangria. It was sour, it tastes like something you might use to mop the floor. I told the waiter that it tasted sour and he said "hold on, let me go check." I waited nearly 10 minutes and he came back and told me that the sangria was fine and that it was "only 8 days old". He should have just asked me if I wanted something else. I told him I did not want it. Oh, Evidently Thursday night is Trivia night.
