Had the lamb vindaloo & the lamb kadambari. Both were rich and delicious in their own way. The lamb was tender. I however didn't fair well with the level of spice. The spice levels were adequately low for the majority of Americans it really wasn't overly spiced or hot..., however the combination of spices didn't agree with my digestion and I'm still suffering with the fallout of that even the day after. Maybe I will go back to this restaurant .. maybe not ... There are "safer" dishes to order on the menu with less strong spice.... So there are options I just happened to order the wrong ones. Saw great reviews and stopped here on our way back to Orlando. The restaurant is located at a gas station, separated by a wall and has a shared restroom. But, the saying, "don't judge a book by its cover" aptly works here. We walked in with no expectations and were pleasantly surprised. The space is small and cozy with decent decor, and we were seated immediately. The menu is interesting and a bit different from a typical Indian restaurant, with some Indian-Korean fusion options. We tried the mango bhel chaat, paneer bao, veg Hakka noodles, and a sizzling brownie. The Hakka noodles were delicious and reminded us of Indian street food. It was our first time trying bao. The paneer bao had a unique flavor. The mango bhel was okay; we expected fresh mango pieces but it had mango chutney instead. Our server, Siddhesh, was very helpful and recommended the veg Hakka noodles, which ended up being our favorite. Will definitely stop by again if we're in the Ocala area. Real food, right off the highway. They don't have sweet lassis (even though they're on the menu. They do have mango lassis.), so I had a Diet Coke. I tried something I've never had before, chicken pasanda, which had a mild, white, creamy sauce made from four kinds of ground nuts. I wasn't a big fan, I'll try something else next time. Butter naan was good, with both crunchy and puffy parts. My wife was excited that they had dosas (a favorite of hers from her India days.) She was happy even though hers had a lot of onion (which she doesn't like) and was mildly hot (we're both wimps for heat.) We have been here about half a dozen times over a period of 3 months. We have never been disappointed. Food is always flavorful- whether it's lamb, chicken, goat, fish or shrimps or veggies for vegetarians. The last time we were here, there were 7 of us. Ordered all different dishes. Everyone liked what each ordered. No one had a complaint about their food. This is simply an amazing accomplishment. Our server Basu helped tremendously in describing to us what we're interested in. After church service (was subjected to distracting loud talkers all throughout the service...who does that?), my wife and I continued our practice of eating out for lunch we brought over from Texas. We were originally planning on checking out The Great Greek but The Flame was featured on Yelp when I opened the app, so we pivoted and went there instead. I guess being featured on Yelp actually works to drive in more business! Tucked in a BP gas station, albeit a different door to the restaurant but shares the bathrooms with the gas station, this place is easy to miss if you're not looking for it. As we walked in, the place was actually appointed quite nicely. We were seated promptly and given menus. My wife ordered the Tofu Korma ($18.99, mild) and I ordered their Chicken Tikka Masala ($19.99, medium heat). We also ordered Garlic Naan ($4.99). The entrees came with basmati rice. We were also served complimentary papadums with 3 different dipping sauces. My wife liked her tofu korma...although she, having shellfish allergies, had a mild reaction later on which we can only attribute to possible cross contamination with shellfish in the sauce. My chicken tikka masala had good flavors and spice level was just right, perhaps 6 to 6.5 on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being too spicy to be edible. My wife's mild spiciness was probably a 2 to 2.5. All in all, we thought our dining experience was satisfactory. Service was efficient but impersonal/detached. For food alone, we would give this place 4 stars. While the value was better than Amrit's, we thought our experience at Amrit's was better...better service and ambience. Lunch for 2 came out to just over $55 with tip. read more

Wow! What a fantastic restaurant, absolutely delicious food, and wonderful hospitality! Well decorated little restaurant that you could easily miss but never should because you'll be missing out big time. Siddhesh is usually our waiter and does an amazing job taking care of his guests and being attentive to any needs they have. If you have a question about any item on the menu or that you don't see on the menu, he will be able to give you advice and they can even potentially make off menu items or tweak what they currently have just for you. We stopped by the gas station to fill up gas going back to Texas from Oralando and saw this restaurant next to the gas station. The samosa and chicken biryani that we ordered were excellent. They cooked the chicken biryani less spicy just like how I requested. The samosa filling and the dough were not dry. The green sauce, the yogurt sauce and the brown sauce (tastes like a tamarind sauce) are excellent as well. I will definitely order from this restaurant again if we pass by this place the next time we drive from Texas to Orlando; I will definitely try their other dishes. I highly recommend this place. Was looking for Indian cuisine food options and came across other yelp reviews for this place. Decided to give it a try. This place is literally in the gas station! While the restaurant maybe next to the gas station cashier, the entrance to the restaurant is the BP gas station! If you get to Chilis, you've gone too far! I would say that the decor is more like a diner. Service was good although the waiter was a little curt! We were presented with a complimentary papadum with onion chutney, mint and tamarind. Tasted great. Off to a good start. We ordered lamb biryani, chettinard shrimp and aloo ghobi as well as some buttered naan. Prices were similar to big city (NY, San Francisco or Chicago) which was a surprise especially for Ocala. However, the taste profile of the dishes were disappointing. The naan was a little over cooked so it was dry. The biryani had lots of rice but very little meat. We thought the flavor was a little bland. We requested a spicy chettinard but it was very mild and lacked oomph/umami. Got a good taste at first but finished rather flat. The aloo ghobi needed salt or something. It too was flat. Sadly I would not be coming back again nor would I recommend this place. Too pricey and the portions were small relative to price. Did not meet the flavor of big city restaurants. read more

WOW! We were visiting my inlaws in Florida and we didn't know what to expect. The place is completely unassuming next to a bp gas station. Don't miss your turn or there are many u turns in your future! We did get it as take out, but it was a absolutely delicious. I'm a huge fan of Indian cuisines and cook a lot at home so when-ever there is a new Indian restaurant I've got to try it. Flame is located attached to a gas station close to the Interstate but despite honest efforts to make the space seem inviting and even a bit upscale it still feels like being in a small, almost cramped, diner-like space--probably where a Hunt Bros' pizza or such was before. That however was not the real problem, it was instead the service. I've found service at Indian restaurants in general often rather curt or at best indifferent, but these guys seemed almost annoyed they had patrons to wait on for some reason. They also seemed irked we only ordered water and not something from their full bar. As to the food, it was ok but not exceptional. Typical tikka and other curries, spiced as requested, but nothing stood out and the flavors kind of muddled all together. I doubt I'd go back. It's passable Indian food, yes, but there is better just down the street, better atmosphere, and better attitude. read more

So we've visited the Flame about a half-dozen times now in various group formats - group of 8, just a couple (wife/me), and all kinds of taste though everyone, save 1, enjoys and appreciates Indian restaurants/food. It's an unassuming place co-located with a gas station of all things. It's not the easiest to find but it's not super hidden. It's the 2nd time we've had Indian that was really good co-lo'd with a gas station. Odd. (The other was in Tampa if you're wondering...or even if you're not). We usually get the same server. He is friendly-ish but more important takes good care of us. Requests are all handled well. Food is delivered reasonably quickly and has been hot. And it's been good but we'll get back to that. The dining room is comfortable though the first time we were there they had no A/C. It was during hurricane season so it happens. The bathrooms are shared with the gas station so not the most ideal but each time I went to wash my hands, they were clean enough. The prices are slightly on the high side but more or less only a bit higher than other places. The difference is in the food quality and taste. This is good stuff. I've eaten Indian all over the world (India, Sri Lanka, London, Portugal, New Jersey, California, home cooked by my Indian best friend's wife, etc, etc, etc), 3 times/week at least, cook it at home so have a super appreciation for comparison of good Indian (or -ish) food. Again, this is good. Taste - always very good so far. We've had a bunch of different dishes and even got some recommendations from our friend the server. Wife and are only eat vegetarian so can't comment on the non-veg dishes but my wife goes to Saag (or Palak) Paneer virtually always and the last time they hit it out of the park - fantastic. Today we're going out for my birthday and my aunt who lives in Ocala will be picking up some Flame for us. I never - ever - do that but we like it enough to make the request. read more

Okay, so if you love Indian food and you are anywhere near Ocala, Florida, RUN -- don't walk, to The Flame Indian Kitchen!! My two friends and I are serious lovers of Indian food and we have eaten A LOT of it, and this was one of the very best places we have ever dined. First of all, don't let the exterior fool you. This place is connected to a gas station but you walk in and it's like a much nicer dining establishment, with linens and flatware and fancy glasses and all the things... and the service is out of this world. I got to the place 30 minutes before my friends and asked if I could come in early and be seated and since there were plenty of tables they did not mind at all. (I did also notice that this place was also doing a tremendous amount of takeout.) As I waited for my friends they brought me my drink and a complimentary appetizer that you see here with the three dipping sauces. My favorite was the green one which I was told was mint, and it had a delightful taste. My friends and I had the samosas for an appetizer. We have eaten these literally all over the world, and these were the best any of us had ever tasted. I could have had them as a meal they were so good. All three of us ordered butter chicken, rice, and garlic naan. It was out of this world. We will go here again when we are in the area. read more

Siddhesh, our excellent and personable server, and their executive chef elevated the evening. It is next to a gas station store as some said in reviews, but it is lovely, clean, modern and has small but great full bar, and wonderful food. I enjoyed their butter chicken mild- medium hot- spicy perfection. Added Garlic naan and my husband, enjoyed his Manhattan on the rocks. He ordered a recommended lamb dish from Siddhesh. Meal was excellent! We live in Orlando. We may drive to Ocala 1.5 hours just for this treat of a restaurant. read more

I had a dish that I haven't seen on another menu: methi malai, which is green peas and cashews cooked in fresh fenugreek leaves with a rich creamy cashew, onion, and tomato gravy. Had to go to Urgent Care and this place is next door. Since I had to wait, I of course looked them up and did my research. When I was finished I headed next door. The staff seemed friendly and only took about three minutes to take my order. I could see the cooks from the bar area and they seemed pretty legit. I ordered Samosa- Loved it! Had a kick at the end, but the Tamarind sauce provided a good balance. Garlic Naan and Chili Garlic Naan - It was naan! We enjoyed lunch again at The Flame. Our server is consistently helpful with suggestions and periodically refilled our waters. This time, we ordered goat Vindaloo, shrimp biryani and The Flame Special Mass Ke Soole which is lamb rack in their delicious Kadambari sauce. We'll definitely order a Kadambari dish again! Personally, the "as it comes" spice on the Vindaloo and the biryani is too spicy for me but my spice tolerance is pretty low. The flavors were still yummy though.
