Before I get to the food, I want to recognize the excellent customer service. Since it was my first visit, I had quite a few questions. The employee helping us was patient, friendly, and knowledgeable. She walked us through all of the flight options, and let us know that everything was made fresh to order, so there would be a short wait. The chicken was crispy, juicy, and well seasoned, and the waffle had a wonderful texture: light and airy inside with a crisp exterior. It was served with syrup and a remoulade-style sauce. The restaurant is clean, welcoming, and thoughtfully decorated with fun murals, word art and nods to Round Rock. For a first visit, Waffle Love made a fantastic impression. They have a nice variety of tacos, with a bunch of classic and modern versions. My go to order is the Al Pastor, Barbacoa, and the chips and salsa. The Al Pastor is one of the best versions I've had, with pineapple chunks enhancing the flavor from the crispy pork. The barbacoa is tender and fatty, an big punch of flavor. The red salsa that is super spicy as well. A bit too spicy for me, but has wonderful flavor. This place is looking to be our newest default taco place.

John passed away in early 2024, while his family took over the shop in Pflugerville. Now just about a decade after opening shop, Brotherton's is closing down at the end of August. Following John's passing, they've hit a few road bumps from the rising cost of beef that's been plaguing Texas BBQ. Earlier in January they posted on social media how they were struggling, and again last spring. At the start of August, the Brotherton's family announced Brotherton's Black Iron BBQ in Pflugerville was shuttering for good at the end of August. Knowing this would be the last time I would be able to try it, my buddy and I took an extended lunch break on a Friday to give it a shot. Upon arrival at just around 11:50, we noticed that the parking lot was packed with multiple food trucks and other businesses filling the shopping center. We got lucky with a parking spot far away as we marched inside to wait in line. On the door lay plenty of stickers from different BBQ joints from Texas and beyond, with even some coming from overseas. The line moved slowly but surely, and as we got to the front we got our three-meat plate with a bonus slice of turkey for good measure. We ended up getting to Brotherton's at the perfect time because we got the final slices of brisket on that glorious Friday. I'll share my thoughts on everything we tried: Brisket: Though it looked like a great cut that was nicely seasoned, it was pretty fine overall. Nothing remarkable about their brisket while still very fatty. Jalapeño Cheddar Sausage: Juicy, cheesy, not really too spicy on the jalapeño side of things, but that might just be from the mildness of jalapeños these days. Pork Ribs: These suckers looked incredible from the pictures I saw online and on social media, but they were kinda disappointing based on how incredible they looked visually. They were good, just not as epic as I was hoping. Turkey: Turkey is underrated in the BBQ scene, and this is no exception. A nice cut of meat! Cornbread Casserole: I could've eaten the whole thing myself, so it was a shame that we were sharing. Green Chili Mac and Cheese: I'll repeat myself. I could've eaten the whole thing myself, so it was a shame that we were sharing. As a whole, I'm very glad I gave them a shot before I would never be able to again. That's the hardest part about Texas barbecue. The best places and the historic spots can drop in a moment's notice when hardships hit or the meat prices skyrocket. Sadly, I can tell that they're already at the end of their rope with certain menu options like the loaded nachos and baked potatoes, which always seem like the sign of the end. And with how the food was simply just decent overall, it's hard to justify the rising prices. I see reviews all over saying their quality has fallen off year after year following JMFB's passing, and it makes sense: he was the heart and the soul of the business. When that vaporizes overnight, it's only a matter of time. I don't wish for the downfall of any spot, but I understand that it's bound to happen to certain ones. I drank a few drinks here, starting with their Texas Barrel Aged Old Fashioned, made from Still Austin Bourbon, a honeysuckle liqueur, vanilla, and orange bitters. A really strong but full-bodied cocktail with a lot of great flavors at play. I drank a local Austin beer on tap that I'm suddenly blanking on off the draft, and ended the night with a Montucky Cold Snack combo with a small pour of bourbon (maybe 1792, don't quote me). We only ate appetizers and sharables while at Whiskey Cake. I'll try to run through everything we had: Local Goat Cheese Fondue: A uniquely sharp experience. The bread was fantastic, but I'm very particular on my cheese and decided goat cheese wasn't for me. Roasted Garlic Hummus: The pita bread rocks, and so did the hummus, which is the actual selling point of the dish. Fries & Friends: Literally a basket of fries and dipping sauces. Not bad at all, but I don't know what you would expect. Deviled Eggs: I can't truly get behind hard-boiled eggs for some reason, but if I don't perceive that it's a hard-boiled egg, I can imagine that these are killer. I really enjoyed this. Charcuterie Board: A little bit of this, a little bit of that. A really excellent collection. The cheddar, the sausage, the cured meats, and the honey were all standouts, and it is probably the best table appetizer to get if you're also getting a full meal. Just little snacks for everyone! We ended the night with some of their Whiskey Cake, which is absolutely delightful and is obviously what they are known for. The waitress that served us was fantastic and timely and super friendly. There is not a part of the dish I don't think was perfect. The chop, sauce, broccoli and slaw combined perfectly. I would say come back for this alone, but the tavern burger and chicken sandwich were great as well. The fries are crunchy on the outside and flaky inside. Grilled vegetables are an excellent side. You shouldn't leave without an order of the whiskey cake. "I only want a bite," doesn't exist. If you aren't very hungry start with dessert and add the main dish to go. Whiskey Cake has an exhaustive whiskey list and Wednesday has $7 pours which makes tasting easy. I hear brunch is excellent; I can't wait to try it.
