We decided to have breakfast in Hutto after finishing the Hippo Run 5K, and Julio's was our pick. I ordered the jamaica (hibiscus) agua fresca and the carne guisada breakfast plate. I was hoping for the traditional brown gravy, but this dish came with a spicy red version instead. (Reason for 4 stars) The meat was tender, the tortillas were fresh, and the sauce was hot and flavorful, just not quite the brown gravy I grew up loving as a San Antonio girl. Our waitress was wonderful: friendly, attentive, and very accommodating. She switched easily between Spanish and English, which made our whole table feel comfortable since one person in our group is bilingual. The seasoned potatoes were spot on: crispy, tender, and well seasoned. The refried beans were classic and delicious. Portion sizes were generous for the price, and the restaurant itself was clean with plenty of space for our group of four. Overall, Julio's was a great stop after the race. It might just become our go-to spot for future Hippo Runs. If you're local or have visitors in town, definitely add Julio's to your list. read more

Julio's restaurant in Hutto West where the old Rio Grande restaurant used to be the looking field is the same. The service was great. Our waiter was a very nice man who is very knowledgeable of the menu the menu you had a good variety of choices. I started off with the taco plate. It was very good. It had fresh vegetables and I did the double ranchero beans. Everything was served hot. We just had the sweet tea , but it was very good. Our waiter came back and checked on us several times he was very nice. Everything was very, very tasty. I will definitely go back to Julio's. It is very conveniently located and the food was once again very good. We were there at 11 AM right before the lunch rush there were many people there. It was not too loud for me and my friend to be able to have a good conversation. They do have larger tables for big parties. Julio's Mexican Restaurant in Hutto offers decent Mexican food, and we often find ourselves coming back for more. They have good lunch specials and a happy hour from 2-6 pm, which makes it a convenient spot for both a quick bite and a relaxed meal. Service has been good during the slower times and you can tell when it's super busy they may be understaffed but interactions with their staff have never been unpleasant. We recently tried their new Southwest Botana appetizer. The Southwest eggrolls and pepper puppies were hits, but the tater kegs were basically just tater tots and didn't really stand out. However, the fajitas, as usual, were the star of the meal--delicious and flavorful, as we've come to expect. Their queso is what you'd typically find at this type of Mexican restaurant, made with processed cheese in a Velveeta style. If you're a fan of that classic, creamy queso, you'll be pleased. Personally, I prefer a queso made with a blend of fresh cheeses and ingredients, but I know there's definitely a market for the style Julio's serves, so no hard feelings there. Overall, it was an enjoyable visit, and we eat here frequently. Julio's continues to be a reliable choice for Mexican food in the area. We've only been to this spot once, and we will likely return. The food is served fresh and they have a very extensive menu. Their guacamole is good, and their house chips are good to munch on while you wait for your order to be cooked. The service was excellent. We arrived around 10 AM on Sunday no wait, we were seated immediately. I believe our servers name was Juan, he paid attention to detail and was on top of his game! The restaurant itself seems a bit outdated - the furniture and lighting could use a update but no big deal. It looked like there was a patio however due to the weather it was closed but might be good for happy hour/ brunch seating when available. The migas plate was excellent! Perfect size, the potatoes were by far some of the best breakfast potatoes I've had in a while! My significant other had migas tacos and a pancake , pancake was nothing to write home about but flavor and texture was as to be expected. We wanted a Paloma however they don't carry grapefruit juice or squirt so we opted for a margarita on the rocks instead. The margarita was good, not too sweet . We decided to take a order of fish tacos home for our lunch. The fish tacos were very good, it was a white fish with mild fish flavor of course the salsas topped it off! The bill for everything was around $45 and that included a 20%tip which is very good pricing if you ask me! We will definitely return to Julio's when in the area! read more

Sunday late lunch. Food was tasty, fresh and hot with a short wait time. Chips were hot and fresh and just the perfect amount of salt. Salsa was a little thin, but good flavor. I ordered a platter and particularly liked the cheese served on the refried beans. We also ordered the Pechuga Cancun and it was very tasty, but a little salty. Stopped in after a long day of moving and needed time to relax and regroup. This place checked those boxes. Feels very much like like a cantina type style restaurant, few tvs around w sports or other related shows. Family friendly menu and style of tables and big booths! Always a plus. We tried the Texas stuffed tater tots as an appetizer and those were delicious, think cheese fries but in a fried ball and equally as delicious and satisfying w a crunch! At the table for main dishes we did a supreme platter, a chicken quesadilla, and a Texas size burrito. Everything was delicious and plentiful! The wife and I revisited Julio's for dinner, ducking in to feed our Mexican cravings after a little shopping. They have a big selection of light dishes to more substantial combination plates. I picked the taco salad with shredded chicken and my wife enjoyed at delicious looking chalupa. Of course we tried their margaritas, brain freeze and all! Totally yummy! This place is easy to get in and out so also a great place for happy hour. Service is very friendly and attentive so we'll definitely keep coming back. A great local place. Great job all! read more

They stated we could order lunch at 10:50 but decided to not tell us she had to wait till 11. Then putting it in, no communication and brining it out with our food following. Do not place a delivery order from Julio's! Third time in a row the shrimp tacos are missing the sauce that comes with it. This order they forgot one of the side guacamoles that comes with the plate. We order $25 worth of queso and get one small bag of chips which in store would be bottomless. When you call in, they couldn't care less, unless you insist on talking to the manager. Will not be ordering or recommending Julio's anymore since they can't seem to fix their issues. read more

This place is such a hidden gem!!!! First off, free chips and salsa! That's so hard to find in a Tex-Mex now. I got the Julio's dinner plate and it fed me for 2 hefty meals (1 to go) of deliciousness. My SO also got a dinner plate that lasted 2 meals. The plates were ~$15 each, hella cheap. The small margaritas were even massive and for a great price. Amber Dos XX was on draft, huge plus. There's a few TVs at the bar area. The two meals and 7 drinks cost us $67! This place is great. We discovered this restaurant a couple of months ago as our neighbors recommended it and they weren't wrong! Ive fried their Tortilla soup, Chile relleno and fajitas and everything has been a hit. My family has ordered margaritas and they look awesome, and big. Everytime we go we feel welcome and hit it off with their chips and salsa, which for my taste are so great! Give it a try. Decided to stop in here for dinner this evening. The food served here is no frills Mexican cuisine. Food and drink prices were decent and customer service was quite good. I had multiple wait staff check on me during my visit. The chips and salsa were good and neither the red or green were spicy, but had good flavors. I started with their jumbo house margarita on the rocks. The waitress brought it out in short order. I did find it to be a bit sweet for my tastes, but I did enjoy it. Wanting to try a couple of food options I ordered the shrimp and crab quesadilla and the shrimp enchiladas. Both came out quick and had good flavor. I did find the rice and beans could have been seasoned a bit more, but were good. Overall, the food hit the spot and I'd come back again. I would love to try some other dishes on the menu. read more

I wanted to like this place sooo bad. I really did. I read through the reviews and was on the fence about eating here, but I decided to anyway because sometimes people just don't know what good food is. From my experience, this is not good Mexican food- I'm sorry to say. First, I called to see if I could sit on the patio with my pup. Julio answered and said I could but kept iterating that the patio was filling up- making it seem as if I shouldn't eat in, which was weird. So I decided to order to-go as I live extremely close. He then handed off the phone to the hostess/to-go worker. She didn't know the menu well but that didn't bother me. I got the supreme platter with: 1 ground beef taco, 1 beef chalupa, 1 tamale. & barbacoa enchilada, 1 chile con queso puff & tomatoes. I also added an a la carte side of grilled shrimp just to try it out. I asked for a barbacoa enchilada because the whole platter came with ground beef and that just seemed like a lot of the same thing made different ways to me. I told her I'd pay extra for the barbacoa no problem and if they can't do it- also no problem. When I arrived to pick up my order I obviously checked the patio. It was relatively "full" but I did see no less than 4 empty tables so my dog and I definitely could've dined in. It took a while for someone to help me. Julio and the hostess were the only ones working up front. Neither of them seemed to really know what was going on. I overheard Julio tell other patrons on the phone that the restaurant was filling up- and again making it seem as though they shouldn't come in... I worked in food service for 3 years and even though we had 1+ hour long waits, we ALWAYS encouraged people to come in anyway. So that was very weird for me to hear. Anyway, when Julio checked me out he (what felt like) chastised me about upgrading to the barbacoa saying "for future reference we don't usually do barbacoa on the platter." Which is fine. But he should be telling the person who took my order that. If you don't do it, then don't! But telling me that was very offputting. Anyway onto the food. The only relatively good thing I ate was the chalupa and I can't even give you a reason why. The barbacoa enchilida was GROSS. You can't eat everyone's barbacoa so I should've known better. It was really fatty, with no flavor, weird texture. Rice and beans lacked flavor. Just felt like I was eating a whole bunch of nothing. The salsa verde and roja were both soupy and flavorless. The shrimp was AWFUL. Had this weird slimy texture and no flavor again. I just don't get how you mess up grilled shrimp. I will not be back, unfortunately. I actually got a pretty gnarly stomachache after eating the food. I was really hoping to like this place just because there are little to no good Mexican food spots in Hutto or round rock even. Rio is a disappointment and sadly, Julio's is too. read more

This is the most disgusting burrito I ever had. The tortilla was cold and stale, the meat was over salted, they didn't spread the ingredients and just had beans at the top, rice in the middle and beef at the bottom. This was my second time trying Julio's and it will be my last. I've had quite the sampling from the menu, and it is all incredibly lackluster at best. The guacamole is a green paste with a bit of onion and tomato, no cilantro or lime. The queso looks like something you'd get at a HS baseball game. The chicken from the tacos is dry and flavorless. The ground beef is very bland. The Miller dip was actually okay and their nachos aren't bad. I will say the staff are all very friendly and nice. Service was fast and accurate. Positive experience there and the place is in decent shape. But, overall, being in central Texas, right out of Austin, they have to deliver better Tex-Mex. House Margs great and smalls at a great price. Table Salsa soo tame. If you aren't looking for heat YOU HAVE FOUND THE PLACE. My Sonora plate (1) ground beef enchilada, (1) Cheese Enchilada, double beans no rice. Good not great just good. My husband ordered the Carnitas plate. Done well, tender pork makes me happy.
